Government says the housing deficit in the country stands at about 1.3 million.

Local government and Housing Permanent Secretary Amos Malupenga says this is according to the 2010 census report.

Mr. Malupenga says initiatives to reduce the housing deficit in the country should therefore be supported.

Mr. Malupenga says organisations such as the Habitat for humanity have contributed largely to the effort and has constructed over 3 thousand and 5 hundred houses and will construct 1 thousand 7 hundred 50 houses by 2018.

  1. That’s a very acutely conservative figure.
Some of the shelters our people live in are not houses.

  2. The real figures are 4 million, the minister is not considering people in rural areas. If you want people to continue living in mud thatched houses then 1.3 is all you need. We are talking about making sure no one among the smart people of the Zambian Enterprise has descent shelter, a flashing toilet and piped water.

This is not time to leave anybody behind. All Zambians deserve better … No single Zambian is qualified for poverty

    • I agree with you B R Mumba , Sr. In 2014 the housing deficit was 3 million. So by now, the reasonable national housing deficit is estimated at 4 million.

  3. Using 2010 census record does not give an accurate shortfall for 2016.
Zambia Compounds and most rural housing need upgrading too.
Bring Mayors, local Chiefs and Kings on board and you will surprise yourselves with positive results for the whole country.

  4. It is very shameful at this time and age to allocate plots without developing them, the areas in question are Ndola mitengo and dolla hill with no roads, electricity and water. The government has land development vote but this money is usually abused. The councils should develop the plots then offer them to the public, please move with time.
