Kitwe City Council closes down over 100 non-complying shops

The Kitwe city council this morning swung into action and closed over 100 shops in the city’s second class trading area for non-compliance with the trading regulations provided for under the Local Government Act.

The city council management team and the council police led by Town Clerk Bonwell Luanga demanded for display of trading licenses, fire and personal levy payments before closing all the shops that failed to provide these documents.

Mr. Luanga told journalists that the local authority’s move was aimed at reminding the business community on their obligation to comply with the provisions of the trading regulations.

He said there was need for the local authority to be proactive in revenue collection for it to attain its projected budget and to provide the public with quality services.

He added that the move was also aimed at ensuring that the city becomes a healthy and productive.

Mr. Luanga further said the local authority also wants to ensure that Kitwe contributes to the attainment of the goals of the seventh national development plan of turning the country into a middle income economy.

And Mr. Luanga has said the local authority will soon engage managements of shopping malls and other public facilities to ensure that they put up smoking zones in their facilities to abate the current rampant public smoking.

He charged that the council will enforce the law if it does not received cooperation from the managements of shopping malls and other public places in the city.
