Kawambwa girls’ lack of interest in school worries sponsor

Share

Campaign for Female Education (CAMFED) in Kawambwa district has expressed worry at the poor performance of its sponsored pupils in the area.

CAMFED members expressed worry during their annual committee meeting in Kawambwa on Monday. The members said 90 percent of the sponsored girls in all schools in the district were not performing well while some were falling pregnant while still in school.

One of the members, Edith Chikonde attributed the poor performance of the girls to poor selection criteria and lack of seriousness on the part of the pupils.

Ms Chikonde wondered what method CAMFED was using to pick vulnerable girls to be sponsored because most of them were not performing to expectation.

And another member Elinah Mubita suggested that eligible vulnerable girls be subjected to aptitude tests before being put on sponsorship to avoid picking those who are not serious with school.

The members have since suggested that both vulnerability and academic performance be taken into consideration when selecting girls to be put on CAMFED sponsorship.

  1. That’s what happens when society and parents in particular offer no strategy for their children to master existence – instead of progress and prosperity, the results are broken homes and tragedy.

  2. Okay,Iam not being harsh on the female folks.I was at one time in co-education school and girls often times girls will sit idle and choose not to participate saying its too hard for them. Some will even say”Iam a girl,i cant do that”.Meanwhile they used to dedicate a great deal of their time discussing boyfriends and marriages and NEVER about school.Alas,I came in Europe,Russia in particular, its the opposite, first they seek their independence thru education and they are indeed hardworking than guys.In Zambia,we need a cultural revolution so that girls view education as a priority as opposed to being married. They think marriage is everything when it is the opposite especially where one is not educated.Without girls being educated,I see more poverty, street kid and GOD knows more.

  3. Its sad that girls are dropping out of school. Just yesterday, my sister narrated to me how her girls two of them have dropped out of school. One pregnant, the other expelled due to misbehaving. This is sad indeed. The future will judge them harshly.

  4. I did my secondary school at Kawambwa Tech School though i appreciate what a man i am today and the hard ship we endured or rather faced while there it was survival of the fittest as compared to kasama boys.were i did my junior years the standard of teaching in laupula in general need to be looked into.Good infrastructure i should say and very conducive for studying, but i think it all goes down to the ministry of education in Mansa they need to do more for both young boys and girls alike CAMFED don’t give up probably your selection is fraud you cant force a donkey to drink water, look for ambitious one and give them that rare opportunity and not just numbers.

  5. I think there are misplaced objectives on the part of CAMFED here. CAMFED should realise that education is not about passing an exam, the presence of girls in the school environment itself is education enough. The influence of education on individuals should not only be judged through exams, there are a lot of ways that can be used to evaluate why the “sponsored” girls are opting to be out of school. For me stopping school should be the issue to look into and not poor perfomance as they put it. Exams should not determine what poor and good perfomance is. The curricullum should be localised so that it takes the interests of the local people and they should be educated as such, if CAMFED is expecting them to pass Chemistry that has been defined elsewhere, it might not help much in ……

  6. contributing to the local knowledge that should encourage the girls to stay in school and effectively contribute to the development of their society. In the western countries were CAMFED probabbly emerge from, exams are far from the progress of pupils in schools. Pupils are evaluated based on somthing else than just exams. in addition, most of the things they learn are locally practical and tangible……. I rest my case

  7. pompwe munshibila nsala….so you are one of the “KASUSU MWENDA SIX MILES” of those days. I am glad you appreciate that Kawambwa technical school opened the door for you to get to Sweden.
