First Republican President Kenneth Kaunda has described the late Freedom Fighter, Mama Chibesa Kankasa as an example of a practical believer in the “ One Zambia, One Nation,” motto which calls on all Zambians to live in unity and love.
In his tribute to Mama Kankasa made available to media in Lusaka yesterday, Dr Kaunda said the late veteran politician actively contributed to the stable foundation of the country.
Dr. Kaunda says the late Mama Kankasa worked hard for the welfare and development of the people of Zambia and Africa, before and after independence.
“I remember her dedication and courage during the struggle for our independence. She worked with men, women and young persons to press for change in the fight against colonialism and racism.
Dr. Kaunda recalled that after independence, Mama Kankasa served in various portfolios such as a Member of the Central Committee, and Chairperson in the Women League, among others.
The founding father noted that Mama Kankasa also played a major role in uplifting the welfare of the freedom fighters and the underprivileged in society.
He said the late mama Kankasa attended an intensive programme to redress the imbalances that Zambia’s population had in terms of basic needs.
He added that Mama Kankasa also worked tirelessly for the development and unity which she contributed greatly to national, regional and global progress.
“My brothers and sisters, in Mama Kankasa, I have lost a great comrade but I am comforted by various activities that she achieved as her legacy caries on, following her example of practising ‘One Zambia, One Nation,” as there is no other way but for all of us in the nation to work together in unity,” Dr. Kaunda explained.

Kaunda should have used this opportunity to come clean about his alleged covert relationship with the deceased. His colleague Mugabe used the death of the mother of Grace ‘Gucci’ Mugabe to come clean about how he was having a covert relationship with Grace while Sally Mugabe was sick and dying. That took courage. Well that is just a thought.
