Opposition People’s Democratic Party (PDP) president George Mpombo has refuted media reports circulating online that he has rejoined the United Party for National Development (UPND).

Mr. Mpombo told ZANIS Ndola in a walk-in interview that the story published by one of the online publications is a complete falsehood adding that he has no intentions of rejoining the UPND.

He explained that the online publication in question has used an old picture of him with UPND officials.

He further revealed that at the moment, he is politically neutral, saying he had even disbanded his People’s Democratic Party three years ago.

Mr. Mpombo has since appealed to all well-meaning Zambians to practice politics of unity and not name calling.

In 2016, during a run up to the general elections Mr Mpombo, then People’s Democratic Party President, dissolved his own party and joined the UPND.
Mr Mpombo said at the time that he was re-joining the UPND in order to contribute to the emancipation of the poor majority Zambians.

And in receiving Mr Mpombo at the time , UPND leader Hakainde Hichilema said the party was humbled by the gesture.

“We are humbled to receive Mr Mpombo, who has decided to disband his party and re-join the UPND family. By way of a reminder Hon. Mpombo was the UPND’s first ever elected official as councillor shortly after the party was formed in 1998,” he said.

“He was later elected as Kafulafuta MP and served as Minister of Defence in the late Levy Mwanawasa’s administration. Equally humbling was receiving the support of senior citizens and freedom fighters such as Mr Bautis Kapulu, who was a member of the UNIP Central Committee and minister in the UNIP Government.”
