RB formally concedes defeat

MMD cadres greeting President Rupiah Banda

President Rupiah Banda says he has accepted the outcome of the two parliamentary by-elections held yesterday in Chifubu and Luena constituencies.

The President has also congratulated Patriotic Front (PF) winning candidate in Chifubu Susan Kawandami and Charles Milupi who won in Luena.

The President said in Chienge today that though the MMD lost the two parliamentary by-elections, the ruling was still happy that it has taken all but two of the nine local government by-elections held across the country.

He said the ruling party accepts the results because that is the democracy that the MMD government is promoting to allow people top choose the leaders they want.

He said PF has returned its own seat through its candidate Susan Kawandami in Chifubu while the former independent MP for Luena Charles Milupi had returned his seat under the Alliance for Democracy and Development (ADD) that he recently formed.

He wished the two winning MPs well as they start their work in parliament.

The President also said he was happy that the MMD has reduced the losing margin in both constituencies.

He said in 2006 the MMD lost Chifubu seat by 10,000 margin but it reduced that to only 2,000 in yesterday day’s poll.

He said in Luena the ruling party had lost with a huge margin in the previous election but it only lost by 300 votes this time around.

Mr Banda said the ruling party is happy that it is making progress in gaining support in constituencies that were strongholds of the opposition.

He charged that the reduced margins have made the opposition to know that the MMD is a strong party.

  1. Thats the way to go mr. President!! Our margins are looking good 2011 is not our problem but the opposition

  2. By Rupiah`s standards the MMD has emerged stronger. MMD will record the worst general election in 2011. Because the only province the MMD we will gain meaningful seats is Eastern Pronvice. Here is the scenario for the MMD:
Eastern- likely to win all the seats
    Central-likely to win 2 seats
Northern – likely to win 3 seats
North Western-likely to win 1 seat
Luapula- likey to win 4 seats
Lusaka- likely to get 0 seats
Southern- likely to get 0 seats
Western – likely to get 2 seats
Copperbelt- likely to win 1 seat
My prediction is that MMD will not win more than 30 parliamentary seats in 2011 general elections

  3. Look here guys before the kaponyas jump on me,When it come to the Presidential Vote, We are 100% incharge of Central Prov,100% Eastern Prov, 85% North W, 96% Luapula, Then we have to share Western Province with Milupi, we shall share nothern,CB, Lusaka, Southern with PF/UPND. However, our votes combined in these areas will make MMD cover up on other losses. Our Southern Province votes are good enough to make MMD bounce back. Those who Dreaming about change please keep on. MMD is here to stay but we are certainly in regional politics. Watch Bosilozi.

  4. Wapya Munzi!!! stop dreaming and wake up! MMD is gone, maybe you are giving us some rigging forecast? MMD needs to pack its bag and disappear into Malawi. Even Eastern folks are working up quickly. It oly takes someone like Milupi to do the same and you are gone. Chiluba has bought some seats in Luapula and people are not stupid! They voted PF and will go to anyone on the PF ticket come 2011, so Luapula, Northern, CB, Lusaka, Western, NW and southern are not going to MMD. Only a quarter of Central and Eastern maybe yours! MMD has let everyone down. Even Puta knows this and his most precious MP (Katele kalumba) has been eliminated from MMD – What a mistake!

  5. This Wapya Munzi chap is typically a blind and greedy follower if not plain stu-pid. Who quite honestly wld in their right mind support someone like rupiah banda and his government. It says a lot about the level of intelligence partaining in the present party and its government – lower than the beast in the field, plain f-u-c-k-i-n-g dull and instinctively animal like.

  6. that’s what the opposition always say, but there is a lot of sense in what Rupiah is saying. if opposition go it separate RB is gonna carry the day. sata has not made any progress in other areas other than his strong holds, HH i thought western province is his but to no avail maybe north- western but i know they’re gonna divide with MMD. What am i saying? RB has strong holds and where oppositions are strong him is # 2 maths is simple, he who gets 1&2 is better than the one who gets 1,3 even 0. those who’ve been in class knows what I’m talking about. so go it alone 2011 and forget about forming Government.

  7. its not about blind chi pandapa its about analyzing issues and following people who’re less greedy. for sure even if its change sata is out my friend, what good is he gonna bring when he failed us in the first MMD government. its written in the holy book: before you remove a peck of dust from your friend’s eye, you must first remove a log from your eye.

  8. Look Wapya Munzi!’s friend. You were either born yesterday or you have a very short memory. Or indeed like your so called friend typically blind greedy and or plain s-t-u-p-i-d. You claim Sata failed us what about rupiah banda all the while in the unip government and indeed in the various roles that he played during the unip era? Sata achieved quite a bit and if you look beyond your nose you will be able see what he achieved. We are talking about a man who is pragmatist and aggresssive in his attitude towards work . Whereas your rupiah is one lazy bugger who really achieved zero in the past and has achieved nothing in the present. Dont forget rupiah was actually fired a couple of times during the unip era for being inept and corrupt .

  9. #4, #8 and #9 – All dreamers. No more grafters, these senior kaponyas are loosing their grip on power, hence winning ka Chitambo seat and losing all ward seats. What with all the state cars, helicopters, police, buying off voters – still lost the chifubu seat and ward seats.

  10. But you must learn something from this loss, as president review where you have gone wrong, things cannot go on like this. you must find out what people want and give it to them; failure to that you will loose more

  11. What is all the hullaballo about? RB is correct that PF has simply retained its seat. The fact is that neither PF nor UPND have increased their strength. Why, because those are the rules of the PACT alliance, each party to stick to its perceived stronghold. Very bad strategy indeed because when (not if) the PACT does break up which is inevitable and it has already happened unofficially, the two parties will find themselves where they were in 2006/2008. Worse still the members will be in a state of confusion for 2011. Why can’t you guys listen for a change, strategise like intelligent people, and not get excited with winning bread crumbs?

  12. Wapya Munzu!!
Wake up and face reality. This is how people deceived KK. Things are bad for the MMD. Western and N/Western are no longer strongholds of MMD. I doubt MMD will sweep across Central coz HH is quite strong there. What goes up comes down.

  13. RB BEYOND 2011 POLITICAL ADVISER..# 8 AND 12…Guys you are really dull! blind following is a bad, are you sure MMD is going to win 2011 elections , can’t you see from the season that things are bad for you? you should be logic when analising the big issues like these ,the time came but has come for you to take your katundu and go, If MMD is going to be in power next year then i will mknow that zambians are used to suffer, guys look at the economical status of our country every day going down now calling people from china to help us…and if you look most of the big companies in zambia all owned by people from outside, can you have a say? can’t even defend your own people being slaped pa nchito fearing that when we talk investors will go and the country will remain a desert..please…

  14. “He said the ruling party accepts the results because that is the democracy that the MMD government is promoting to allow people top choose the leaders they want.”

It is true. The MMD is a government that promotes democracy and the right to choose the leader you want. This is democracy and in democracy, you win some and you lose some. This is what makes democracy healthy.

  15. Mr. President, if you keep rationalising your losses like that, you will completely miss the message the masses are trying to give you. Your advisors will just jump ship at the last moment. Come on, you are smarter than that.

  16. Iwe chi RB a loss is a loss; there is nothing like a good loss and a bad loss. It’s like when you die, there is nothing like dying a little and dying a lot; fact is you are dead! Keep cheating yourself, you will have a rude shock pretty soon mother f*cker! Omedetto PF!!

  17. Iwe chi RB, in the actual fact you should be calculating your loss in percentages. Look, the total votes counted were 12,148. Of these, PF got 6976 (58%), MMD got 4539 (37%), ADD got 412 and UNIP got 221. So, MMD lost to PF by a percentage point of 36.5%; this is extremely huge a margin to loose with considering the amount of resources MMD put in plus some VJ tricks (stuffing of ballot boxes). And for ward elections, no one goes to vote except people the MMD go to get from their homes and pay them money; just look at the turnout; 600 people in total vote out of 25,000 registered voters.

  18. Number 17, in a society of humans with brains in their skulls, that goes without saying. Is expected, ka?

  19. Ok..too much noise iwe baka PF kaponyas… its not going to be automatic. If you want to use he chifubu as a litus test, one would have expected that PF would white wash MMD, but if MMD can still get votes on the copperbelt and lusaka,,, and keep the diiference form those regions small,… then iwe baka kaponya.. 2011 is not yours…you have to go back to the drawing at kulima tower, KMB, intercity..etc:o

  20. Mhhhhh…kwena ba MMD are cheating themselves. Things are really bad for you guys. You will be shocked in 2011 when you will win only 30 seats. Just wait and see.

  21. nambala 8 you are great:
am not a sympathiser of RB and MMD all all cost but if we dont take this analysis serious then forget it in 2011. i think its grandmothers logic since anywhere in the country RB will either be 1 or 2. like always before its the opposition thats facilitates the bouncing back of MMD – thus betraying the electorate, sometimes votes may not even have been stolen.

  22. I am strongy in favour of the Pact I was still quite worried by these results despite the Fact that PF won and that ADD though not a member of the PACT did win and is an oppostion party. The narrow margins should be a great cause of concern for the opposition. The fact that the turnout was low is even furthe cause for worrry because when people are fed-up with the encumbent the turnout is not supposed to be low but high. The vote apathy would imply people are disgruntled and do not care any more who leads them or they are satisfied with the status quo. Neitheris good for the oppostion

  23. Bloggers! pls take this kind advise. Dont insult each other or waste your time outspeaking each other but be mindful that no political party will bring money in your pocket, not even RB. My humble advise is be like myself, find something to do, apply your innovation, workhard and you will make alot of money without corruption and in the midst of whatever you call Govt. bad policies. The problem Zambians have is that you talk too much and very lazy (even at work places many Zambians do not earn what they are paid). WAKE UP! you will always be enriching people by voting for them without realising anything for yourselves. So Kawandami & Milupi will swim in allowances whilst you are endlessly urguing with one another. WORK HARD with innovation and feed your family.

  24. Ba President had the resources but still lost! PF despite being labelled has kaponya party is surely a factor in our politics! Whether we like Sata or not the man works very hard!

  25. Spot on! Walasa real man,we need t b inovative en hardworkin, not jest arguin ova polictics, football, drinkin shake shake na kulasa manigi ma live!

  26. # 28 Bravo I LIKE YOUR analysis…..OUR WORK CULTURE IS VERY BAD IN THIS COUNTRY…..
No wonder foreigners have taken advantage of our weaknesses. Zambia will never be developed by foreigners..these guys are wrecking our monies and investing in their own countries…..we do ot have meaningful development…we are JUST JOKERS…….. zAMBIANS need to arise and begin to develop themselves through creative thinking, innovation….leave politics alone…these guys will never develop this country not even buy you a pocket of meal….. our success depends on our attitudes, our response on how to do things in a different way…….This attitude of scandalizing each other instead of Net working, partnership, innovation will lead us no where…be like Indians, Like burudians, swahilis, chocholis.

  27. Exactly nambala 31 not utujilijili b4 goin 4 parliamentary sessions olo company wokshop ne hule waitin mu room! Or kachasu b4 goin t operate a machine mu factory.zedians, politicians a nt our saviours bt our own brains! Lets wok hard en b counted pa Africa..

  28. Other concerns now. Still bitter about opposition coverage by LT. This article covers RB very well (make him a saint) & would love to see it extended to the oppostion. This paper should cover the opposition equally. Even the latest news on Chifubu and Luena leaves a lot to be desired. LT covers ‘PF wins Chifubu…’ with short paragraph such that the only content they cover is the ‘meanwhile part of it where Fodep laments the aparthy. Same on’ Mulupi wins luena..’ coverage in which LT just reports a few lines on the headline related stories, but spends all the efforts reporting about some ward were the MMd has won giving an impression MMD is doing well. Meanwhile LT doesn’t give that time to the wards in Kitwe where state house spent time & money even sending a political cosultant…

  29. #33, dont worry LT will die with MMD next year. They have become MMD cadres. But the Post will stand for the PACT so lets who win LT or The Post. Back to the issue, RB must not only conced defeat for these two byeletions, he must also conced that next year he will be in a Political casualty room after suffering defeat from the PF. This statement is nothing than a man living in a fool’s paradise. Just like in the days of Noah, fools were laughing at him when he was calling them to enter the arch. So is RB, he will be asking us to open our boat next year after elections but it will be too late.

  30. In the past it was un heard of for the ruling party to loose a bye election. The MMD govt abuses so much public resourses that is why you see the margins wait for the gen election the MMD will be wiped out. If the can loose with all their ministers out on the campaing trail what more when it is one man for himself

  31. Mr. President, time has come for you to review where your ruling party has gone wrong. It is not too late anyway for you to come out with a workable formular which can still make your party popular. My only worry about you is that you have got very wrong advisors around and the same people are not always telling you the truth about what is really on the ground. You always listen to advise which cannot take you anywhere thereby reducing your support all the time. You pay particular attention to what is happening on the Copperbelt which is the hub of Zambia’ s economy and the cries of your own people. What is the purpose of having your government if it does not stand to preserve the rights of Zambians ? Do you really know what is happening in KCM Plc and the conditions for local employees ?

  32. Truly, things are not going in the right direction and there is quite a lot that need to be done in order to correct the situation. Unless you as a government comes in to ensure Zambians have got an adequate share to the cake, believe you me you’ ll cry foul next year. It is sad to see how the so called Investors are amassing wealth, leaving Zambia with nothing. The same Investors have invested heavily in their own countries out of the money they are generating from Zambia. You as president and your members of the administration, what are you doing about it ? Zambians l still go out with less than K3m while these so called expatriates earn more than K80m per month. Isn’ t this broad day light robberly to a country like Zambia where the largest population is still wallowing in poverty ?

  33. 37, K80million is US$17,000 plus so you better know what you are talking about Sir. Tell us what you do to earn that K3 million, and what the expatriate does to earn the K80million. Give us more information about yourself and the expatriates. You can’t expect us to debate zero.
If for example you are a general worker and that expatriate is a skilled person, surely you can’t expect to earn the same salary, not even under Sata’s government in 2016.

  34. RB is the cause of all the loses in MMD it is high time he went back to UNIP if they will have him. It is time for RB to call it a day as you are damaging the MMD, this is party that was built on democracy but now things are changing to UNIP type of leadership. MMd is following the footsteps on UNIP in 1991 when nobody wanted them because of KK’s leadership. RB exit before disgrace as MMD is not for you anymore.

  35. Surely….the indicators are pointing to a worse off scenario in 2011…keep up the spirit of conceding defeat so that we do not have problems when you concede to the major activity in 2011………….certainly its going back t the land in 2011

  36. #38 it’s true #37 should have given more info on his issue, but I’m very sorry to tell you that he is very right and it’s happening right here on the CB, be it KCM, Mopani, NFC or Chibulu Mines PLC. Some of these chaps they call expats are not anywhere close to the level of education the locals who earn less than K3m pa mweshi have. And that $17,000 he is talking about goes untouched cause they are also entitled to close to K5m weekend allowance, vehicle plus free fuel, who knows? Maybe even their accommodation is paid for. It’s even worse now, why do you think MUZ is complaining?
