Updated: Busange Put To Rest

Owen Busange was put to rest today in his home town of Chililabombwe.

Busange, 38, was put to rest this afternoon at Kameza Cemetary just hours after his remains arrived in Chililabombwe from Ndola.

The Powerhouses Lusaka and Zambia 7’s coach died on Saturday evening in a road traffic accident on the Ndola-Kitwe Dual Carriageway.

Busange began his playing career at Konkola before moving to Kitwe where he played for KPF and wrapped up his playing days at Powerhouse who he later coached to two league titles on top of the four he won with the Lusaka giants as a player.

Chililabombwe deputy Mayor Godfrey Nkhoma discribed Busange as true son of Chililabombwe while ZRFU president Raj Karamchand hailed the former Zambia rugby captain as an icon.

Busange is survived by a wife and five children.

Meanwhile, the other Powerhouse Lusaka two players who also died in the same accident will be buried over the next two days.

Kapasa Bwalya is due to be put to rest on Wednesday while  Mwango Katema will be buried on Thursday, both in Lusaka.

The trio died at the end of Powerhouse’s participation in the MTN American Cup tournament held at Diggers ground in Kitwe where the side reached the quarterfinals.

  1. Prayers to all the families affected. Losing people so unexpectedly is hard to get over.

  2. LT How old were the deceased? Whom are they survived by? I think this is vital information when deaths are reported.

  3. I attended the burial,it was a dark moment for chililabombwe,God bless the beareved family.

  4. Owen made rugby exciting. I remember watching several tournaments at the showgrounds and just how fast he could run. Never knew him personally but he struck me as a great person. May his soul rest in peace.

  5. Owen May You Rest in Peace, this is sad and may the lord bless all the families of other victims in these difficult times.

  6. There is need to examine what exactly transpired or led to the deaths, as in the manner in which the team was travelling.

Hopefully, in future the sports teams will travel using safe means.

Condolences to the families and friends of the departed.

  7. Rest in peace Owen, Bwalya and Mwango. Sad time for Zambian rugby. Owen ‘OJ’ waletupela insansa with those great runs and tries.

  8. Guy’s we know know were ever u’re are in God’s good hand’s untill we meet.MTSRIP – Former FPFRFC Chairman

  9. Maybe I havent been reading most of the Zambian papers, but this is really a tragic and a great loss to the nation and the rugby fratenity. Rugby is not a national number 1 sport but the association and the players including the coaches and players like the late Owen ,Bwalya and Mwango have strived to keep this sport alive without the help and support of the GRZ. Why is the govt, ministry of sport, NSCZ quite about the loss of these galant young men. Are they only supposed to comment if it was soccer? When is the govt and other govt sponsored branches like ministry of sport, NSCZ going to be concern and impartial about other minor sports other than soccer? This is really sad people, really sad!

  10. Too sad too bad. May the Lord grant the grace to our Brothers and receive them in His eternal Kingdom

  11. May God console the families in this dark hour. Owen was a good friend of mine as we were together in Chilis. I was staying the flatlets just next to the Chililabombwe Rugby club. How sad indeed. Can someone start a trust for the five children so that we can collectively help look after the children of a man who gave himself to make us proud.

  12. A bridge is repaired only when someone falls into the water. ~Somali Proverb…..MTSRIP and please can someone do something about the roads that are claiming our young lives.

  13. Owen, Too bad my friend you have gone so young. The good times we shared all the laughter and fun we had playing pool at Rugby club will always be remembered. Rest in peace my friend.
