The Law Association of Zambia (LAZ) has come out in defence of its president Musa Mwenya following sustained personal media attacks on him over his recent statement he issued on behalf of LAZ on the barring of public media journalists from the PF general conference.
In a statement released to QFM yesterday, LAZ Honorary Secretary Paulman Chungu says Mr Mwenye as LAZ president is the spokesperson of the Association and that as such he expresses the views of LAZ.
He says all statements issued by the LAZ president are not issued in his personal capacity but represent a well reasoned and researched position of the Association.
Mr Chungu says attack therefore on the LAZ president, or any officer speaking in an official capacity are unjustified.
He explains that LAZ has internal consultative processes that are well articulated and time tested and that these processes were engaged in the case of the ZNBC issue as on all matters on which LAZ adds its voice.
Mr Chungu has reiterated that LAZ will continue to speak very clearly on matters of the law and will not shy away from giving clear and unequivocal opinions on the law and the rule of law without fear of any reprisals or favour and regardless of any unwarranted personal attacks on its spokesperson and elected representatives of the Association.

Sir jack, we must move away from innuendos when there is no proof. Why don’t you take jimmy fingers to court as a concerned citizen if you are sure he is a thief? Kamwendo, I dont know the objectives of LAZ but i must say they are not showing any professionalism in the way they respond to issues. They seem to be powerless and their statement seem not have the respect of the govt and independent objective persons.I blame it on LAZ itself for this state. I read their statement on ZNBC and to me they never stated how ZNBC breaches the ZNBC Act. They merely reproduced the Act with an accusation as an introduction. They should have explained what it means for example to have balanced coverage according to the law and how ZNBC is in breach. I expected a professional body of pipo purpotting to be legal experts to be that specific and guide clearly. Otherwise that statement was speculative, even when ZNBC actually breaches the law.
I think we may have ourselves a very entertaining LAZ executive this year.
When we get in power we’ll fire the whole ZNBC management, even if they pledge to be loyal to us, because we want to turn the public institutions into organs that serve the people, not our interests as a party… Donchi Kubeeba!!!

I respect Musa from UNZA days, he is consistent and proffessional and I know LAZ will not be the same again after his tenure ends. so i trust his judgement and stance. he can not be used by anyone not even PF. thats how principled people are.

Talk of a redundant statement from a so called lawyer. So anything a LAZ person says should not be attacked, otherwise the attack is unjustified, really?
@Njala I think you lost because Chungu is simply stating that the officer who speak on behalf of LAZ must not be attacked in their personal capacity because the views they express are that of LAZ and not their own personal views. Talk about understanding statements
Dan Punka, Njala has a point. LAZ can not be always right, if Mwenye’s statement was not backed with facts then people are free to criticise the organisation including Mwenye himself personally. These guys should not use LAZ as a shield against being criticized. So did they think they can make any ridiculous statement and LAZ will take the blame on their behalf……..because the position is ‘well researched’?
Is it possible for someone to independently verify the ‘well reasoned and researched’ positions that LAZ holds?
Musa made a mistake and acted unprofessional and one sided. If he wanted to justify the barring of ZNBC and company, he should also have mentioned that in the same way the MMD was free to bar POST and company if they believed that they were ‘hostile’ media. That is the way a professional should come out. Musa has now exposed himself as anti-government and fighting with the men in power. This is not good for a self proclaimed high profile body like LAZ (Liars Association of Zambia)
