The Office of District Education Board Secretary (DEBS) has cautioned teachers against over-borrowing from financial institutions in Mansa district.
Representative from the office of DEBS, Obious Kalungu, issued the warning during the commemoration of World Teacher’s Day whose theme was “Teachers Matter” in Mansa yesterday.
Mr. Kalungu told the teachers that over-borrowing from financial institutions retarded the development of the nation economically because government was paying huge amounts of money to lending institutions.
He said government was paying credits for those who borrowed more than required and that teachers should be disciplined financially in order to sustain their families.
And Basic Education Teachers Union of Zambia (BETUZ) National Trustee, Josephine Muyowambuya, appealed to teachers to be non partisan in the October 30, 2008 presidential by- election as most of them would be administering elections.
Mrs. Muyowambuya also implored government to clear all the outstanding arrears for teachers in order to motivate them as the reaction which the teachers may take would not be in the interest of national development.
She said that teachers were vital, adding that the future of the country was dependent on the classroom as education inspired and unlocked the potential of a child to offer new perspectives to help the pupils realize their dreams for the betterment of nation.

Any sensible financial institution only lends to those who can repay. Why blame teachers for borrowing when you dont pay them enough?
What is “over-borrowing”?
HH sends shivers in MMD GRZ as RB Banda endorses HH:

#2 I hear you!
Pay them well and they’l stop borrowing. And teachers do not take this for granted. Dont act like un civilised people.
Teachers should borrow and not return. This will lead to a subrime lending crisis and then they’ll have Zambianise banks. That way Barclays will be operated by GRZ and Zanaco will return to the state.
Teachers are supposed to be highly paid personal.Only HH has an idea how to improve conditions for civil service personal.
The only way teachers can be able to afford things they want in life is through borrowing from these institutions because they are not being paid accordingly. Do they expect them to suffer, lacking what the wish to have when they can borrow. those in the Debs office have lots of allowances, while those teachers just wait for their salaries. Even in devleoped countries people live on credit. let them borrow or pay them highly. To pay them highly there is only one solution from some who has said will do so and he does not fail his promises. Michael Chilufya Sata the incoming president of the Rebublic of Zambia.come on guys you just have to vote for him.
Do not blame teachers for their over borrowing. This problem is not only with Teaching Service but the entire Govt Servise especially servise deliverers in lower positions. If you see a Govt worker shining its either he is geniuly stealing or making unacounted and fake allowances.
The teachers salaries and very poor and low. The only solution one would do if they want to buy something going in the range of 2 – 3 million is to borrow cause just their salaries cannot do. If they dont want teachers to keep on borrowing is to an increase of salaries and good allowances accordingly.
That is why teachers concentrate on private tuitions rather than at their respective schools.
