Bishop Mambo Backs Cyber Law, Calls for Responsible Use of Social Media

Share

Chikondi Foundation Founder, Bishop John Mambo, has welcomed the implementation of the Cyber Crimes and Cyber Security Act, describing it as a necessary step toward restoring order and accountability in the digital space.

Speaking in a telephone interview with ZNBC News, Bishop Mambo said the law is timely and essential for promoting positive engagement on social media platforms. He emphasized the need for digital spaces to be used to share uplifting messages rather than hate speech and offensive content.

“Now is the time to ensure that social media is used to spread positive messages rather than unpalatable language and hate speech,” Bishop Mambo stated. He added that those opposing the cyber law are often individuals who engage in online attacks and misinformation, and who are now realizing the legal implications of such actions.

Meanwhile, governance expert Ng’ande Mwanajiti urged concerned citizens to address their objections to the cyber law through proper legal and administrative channels.

Mr. Mwanajiti emphasized that laws are shaped by evolving societal needs, and it is the responsibility of every citizen to respect and adhere to them. “It is important to underline that the law responds to societal dynamics, as every good citizen must obey all laws equally,” he said.

The Cyber Crimes and Cyber Security Act aims to enhance digital safety, combat cyberbullying, and reduce the spread of harmful content online.

  1. As usual, polarised society, nobody debates with objectivity any more in Zambia. Every body debates according to which side they belong. So when you see a name, you even know before hand which side their weight will be on any debate.

  2. Did any body expect him to say any different. Debate in Zambia is meaningless now as there is absolutely no objectivity in all discourse. It’s all along party lines.

  3. Dear John,
I respect your view. Please help reconcile the Presidents’ different view in opposition and now regarding the same cyber laws.
He had advised that it is an affront to democracy. I take it even your view has changed to match his. Don’t you think leaders must be consistent in what they believe in and should not change sides depending on which side they are in.
    Much love,
    Regards

    • Hi John,
As a follow up to the point above from mulephere, allow me to digress a bit. How do you as a party reconcile your national youth chairman’s position that the ground is not okay economically and that the youths need to protect the President and the Presidents own self praise that all is well, because there is free education and CDF.

  4. Men whose sole interest is their stomach, will sell their freedom and the freedom of their children and grandchildren for a bit of money. They don’t care about the future.

    • Freedom and democracy does not mean freedom to insult and humiliate others. If you cannot make a point without insulting another person, then the law is needed to cure this mischief.

  5. Why should someone not be bold to say you assured Zambians to say a 25kg bag of breakfast meal mealie, you sell at K50 when you form government? Now you are in govt, price of mealie meal is still going up. To much surprise, fritters(dondo) in previous govt cost 50 ngwee each, today it costs K3 each. Now we see a rush to push constitution reforms. What are people thinking now?

  6. @Truth, why don’t you grow up and be relevant. The subject here is the Cyber bill, where does the price of mealie meal come it.
You need to get with the programme.

  7. That last sentence in the story is such a big lie! Before publication, the editor should remove such propaganda from news stories. It should actually read:
The Cyber Crimes and Cyber Security Act aims to enhance government’s power over the citizen’s freedom of speech. It pretends to ensure digital safety, but avails government s cyberbullying, and under the pretext of reducing the spread of harmful content online, will seek to invade every citizen’s privacy.

  8. Anybody who has or is benefitting from this government either through a job, position, any type of allowance etc is backing the law regardless. The rest of us sober minded, neutral people are against.

  9. Not to worry … soon things will hit the fan. We are just waiting for it to start and gather speed. People are holding the things that they want to fling against the fan. That’s how it was under PF as well…
