MMD advises political parties against accusations

The Ruling MMD has urged the opposition parties taking part in the forthcoming presidential by-elections to desist from accusing the party of a ploy to rig the elections.

Speaking at a press briefing in Lusaka today Foreign Affairs Minister Kabinga Pande said all opposition accusing the ruling party of conniving with the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) to rig the election are wrong .

He said such political parties are trying to give excuses of not accepting the party’s victory in the October 30 presidential Election.

Mr. Pande who is also Kasempa MP said MMD is the mother of democracy in Zambia .

He said such allegations being leveled are affecting the functioning of the party.

He said the MMD is happy with the work of the ECZ of which the party was not involved.

Mr. Pande said like any other political party was equally affected by the decisions made by the commission.

Mr. Pande said the Acting President Rupiah Banda is entitled to use government property sating that the use of the helicopter and some government vehicles should not be viewed as abuse of government resources.

He however urged the opposition to concentrate on campaigning and take a part in improving Zambian politics and not politics based on personal matters.

Mr. Pande also urged the rest of the nation to vote wisely in the October 30 presidential elections.

Earlier in the day , the Opposition United Party for National Development (UPND) had accused the MMD’s presidential candidate Ruphia Banda of engineering the attempts to steal the ballots at the Airport.

And MMD Spokesperson and Acting President Rupiah Banda’s Elections agent Benny Tetamashimba yesterday challenged Patriotic Front’s Given Lubinda to go to the Ministry of Finance and National Planning to verify whether the MMD was using public funds in hiring planes for its campaign rallies.

He queried why the MMD shouldn’t hire planes when it is something Mr. Sata has also done.

Mr. Tetamashimba further asked the Patriotic Front to stop causing confusion for political mileage and appealed to the party’s President Michael Sata to accept defeat honourably after losing the presidential by-election set for 30th October, 2008.

Today this afternoon, I got reports from Ndola that the people’s perception of Sata is changing towards favouring HH because of fears on investment and the economy. I was relaibly informed by a Lusaka source that Sata is going nowhere this time in Lusaka.
    This leaves Sata with Northern and Luapula Province (which has 100% Bemba People according to Zambian Central Statistical Office -CSO).
    Also,RBB will do well in Eastern Province though Brig. Gen. is poised to snatch a few notable votes from their.
    Hence,the election outcome has already been decided and HH will take centre stage on 4th November obviously.

I urge the more affluent people like Lubinda to educate these thugs to be cautious because the electoral mathematics does not favour Sata. There is no major shift that has occurred in Sata’s campaign strategy to warrant a different result from last elections. Except that the post now stand on their side against all ethical and legal circumstances. But when did the post ever manage to control peoples choice?     PATRIOTIC Front (PF) leader, Michael Sata, has said there will be no presidential elections in 2011 because whoever will be elected president in this month-end’s election is supposed to rule for five years.

    And Mr Sata has pledged to restore dignity to Kabwe town by reviving all closed and ailing industries in the once mining district, if elected president.

Bouncing MMD back into power will be a situation of a ‘better deveil’ rather than the best candidate because we all know the best candidate is HH without doubt whether you like it or not. But because MMD already has the structures and people to form cabinet, it will be less costly to Usher them into power. My suggestion is let all MMD and UPND vote RB and come 2011, we vote the best president and use these 3 years between now and 2011 to organise UPND and make it a National party.   104. While our constitution may have flows, it is very sad that some people are trying to take advantage for their personal gains. It is in the common sense of everyone that, though the consitution does not explicitly state whether the president resulting from a bye-election with mere completely the remaining years or not, a person is coming in the middle of an existing term of office which has a total period of five years. 2 of the five years have been covered and we are remaining with 3 years. This is the same for parliamentary elections, and the constitution is equaly not specific, but being a bye election it implies finishing the remaining years.
    So why does PF not want elections in 2011?

  136. #128 Don-Chi-Chi, Sata is a tribalist. His party is a tribal party. It is supported by mostly Bembas. Even most of his MPs are Bembas. He addresses his meetings in Bemba. His support base are the Bemba speaking areas of Luapula and Northern provinces. And in Lusaka and on the Copperbelt his support is among the Bemba-speaking kaponyas. The man is a tribalist leading a tribal party.Period.

And for your information he will never be president of Zambia with that mukolo of his that is full of holes. The mukolo is sinking.   144. I am asking the MMD to serious consider endorsing HH before it is too late.
    I am also here to save you all PF supporters from crying, havaving unnecessary heartattacks and being beaten up by the Zambia Army soldiers on the 2nd November 2008. Let those with ears hear for we are in what Dennis liwewe normally used to call “dying minutes”.
