Bye Zambia! Hello Chambia!!

We Normalize and Not Analyze FailureĀ

By Dr. Field RuweĀ
Ā

The aerial beauty of Lusaka, the capital city of Zambia, evokes a sense of pride. This vibrant capital seamlessly melds modern architecture with distinctive British colonial buildings. It has recently been graced by the Chinese with stylish skyscrapers.Ā Lately, Lusaka has become a place where men and women walk with their heads held high, as if they are the ones who transformed it into what it is today with their ingenuity.Ā Ā
Ā
I equate Lusaka with the Trojan Horse myth of the city of Troy. During the ten-year siege of Troy, the GreekĀ soldiersĀ built a massive hollow wooden horse in which they concealedĀ a selected numberĀ ofĀ their soldiers.Ā TheyĀ feignedĀ itsĀ abandonmentĀ andĀ pretended toĀ sailĀ away,Ā leavingĀ the horse as an ā€œoffering to the goddess Athena.ā€ The Trojans pulled the horse into their city. AtĀ nightĀ theĀ concealedĀ soldiersĀ emergedĀ from the horse’s belly, opened the city gatesĀ and theĀ rest of theĀ Greek soldiersĀ ran inĀ and took over the city.Ā Ā
Ā
Envision for a moment the same happening to us; waking up to find the city of Lusaka is gone, fallen in the debt-trap taking Zambia with it. It came close to happening in 2018 whenĀ John Bolton, then National Security Adviser for the United States tasked with Washington’s Africa strategy,Ā disclosedĀ that China intended to seize certain state-owned enterprises if the Zambian governmentĀ failed toĀ fulfill its debtĀ obligations.Ā At thatĀ time, Edgar LunguĀ hadĀ drivenĀ Zambia’sĀ external debt toĀ an alarmingĀ $26.94 million, a move thatĀ almostĀ cost us the country.Ā
Ā
Presently,Ā the external debt under Hichilema stands at approximatelyĀ $16 billion, making the seizure still probable. It is in the wake of Zambia’s 2020 default that the Chinese Trojan Horse stratagem has been applied.Ā The Beijing Boys’ strategy has shifted towards the imposition of the Chinese Yuan as a convertible currency in Zambia.Ā
Ā
In October 2025,Ā Zambia became the first African nation to formally recognizeĀ the Chinese yuan (RMB)Ā as a validĀ currency for mining taxes and royalties, aimingĀ toĀ alleviate aĀ debt estimated betweenĀ $4 billionĀ andĀ $6.6 billion. It was at thisĀ critical momentĀ theĀ Beijing BoysĀ got out of the ā€œTrojan Horseā€Ā opened the Zambian gates,Ā dazzled ourĀ ā€œingeniousā€Ā president,Ā colonized us, and left ourĀ ā€œwell-versedĀ economicĀ gurusā€ in shame.Ā
Ā
The Chinese replicated the actions taken by Britain against them during the Opium Wars (1839-1860). Through the implementation of the ‘unequal treaties,’ Britain compelled the opening of Chinese ports and obtained Hong Kong, which was ceded by the Qing Dynasty and governed as a colony from 1841 to 1997. Once in complete control of Hong Kong, the British enforced their currency to integrate the local population into the imperial cash economy. This manipulation served as a vital instrument inĀ establishingĀ the mercantile system, where Hong Kong existed solely to generate wealth for Britain.Ā

Over the years, China,Ā frequentlyĀ motivated by geopolitical factors that underscore pertinent economic and social inquiries, has been examining African intellectualism with the intention of imitating the British.Ā
Ā
China’s advancement in African studies has evolved from the period of “Sensing Africa” (1900-1949), aimed at comprehending its geography and populace, to the phase termed “Supporting Africa” (1949-1965) during the Cold War, and subsequently to “Studying Africa” (1977-2000), which signified the onset of a more structured academic exploration of Africans, as well as the commencement of the Sino-imperialist era.
Ā Ā
Now we are in the ā€œOwning Africaā€ phase (2000-present)Ā which has resulted in the creation of “debt-traps” through infrastructure development aimed at enhancing political influence and industrial supremacy to fulfill theirĀ objectiveĀ of blatant neo-imperialism.Ā Similar toĀ the British, the Sino-imperialist strategy encompasses the enforcement of their language (Mandarin) upon Africans to increase their “soft power,”Ā that is,Ā the capacity to sway the preferences, behaviors, and outcomes of other nations through attraction and persuasion.Ā
Ā
Why did China choose Zambia as aĀ litmus testĀ for Africa?Ā Because itĀ wasĀ the firstĀ African country where China implemented its most substantial single foreign aid project, the TAZARA Railway, between 1970 and 1975. During their five-year engagement in Zambia,Ā Chinese workers found us lacking an innovative mindset.Ā

Upon their return home, they described us as people who do not cultivate deep curiosity, take calculated risks, perceive challenges as chances for innovation, and employ available resources in a creative and original manner.Ā President Xi Jinping and his “Beijing Boys” at the Ministry of State and Security (MMS) depict us in a similar light—as a society that is more inclined to normalize failure than to analyze it.
Ā
TheĀ acceptanceĀ of the Chinese yuan into our monetaryĀ systemĀ serves as a testament to the normalization of failure. It reveals ourĀ subparĀ standards that have led to serious repercussions,Ā ultimately culminatingĀ in the relinquishment of our sovereignty. Our vulnerability is underscored by a societal acceptance ofĀ failures, economic difficulties, and insufficiently funded educational systems thatĀ fail toĀ generateĀ enoughĀ graduates capable of confronting, challenging, and exposingĀ thoseĀ who enter our country to exploit us.
Ā
According to the latestĀ UNESCO education completion report, by early 2026, around 2.8% of ZambiansĀ possessedĀ a bachelor’s degree, while only 0.4% held a master’s degree. UNESCOĀ was unable toĀ ascertainĀ the exact number of individuals with PhDs.Ā The latest data from 2022 revealed that Zambia had 321 professors, a significant contrast to Kenya, which boasted 10,000 PhD holders.Ā
Ā
The lack of graduates hinders our ability to embrace a ā€œbattlefield mentalityā€ that is, the mental readiness to confront the Beijing Boys, view them as adversaries, analyze their concealed motives, andĀ ultimately outsmartĀ them.Ā
Ā
The duty of examining failures is assigned to the nation’s think tanks and intellectuals. Their role includes the collection and clarification of intricate data, along with providing proof concerning, for instance, the challenges that yuan-denominated revenues would poseĀ in the processes of converting, holding, orĀ utilizingĀ funds within the framework of the national budget.Ā Essentially, thisĀ requires innovative, rational, evidence-based thinking rather than emotional reactions that are ingrained in the acceptance of failure.Ā Ā
Ā
To achieve this goal, it is essential to create a modern education system that shifts from traditional learning practices to one that emphasizes critical thinking, the incorporation of technology, and holistic development. Students in Zambia need toĀ participateĀ actively rather than being mere passive recipients. If we overlook this requirement, we risk confronting a future where Zambia no longer exists.Ā Ā
Ā
In conclusion, I strongly encourage the intellectual community both domestically and internationally to come together and shift from being passive observers to proactive participants in the generation of knowledge.Ā The Chinese have successfully fulfilled their responsibilities,Ā exhibitingĀ their creativity through infrastructure development. In less than twenty years, they have achieved what we have been unable toĀ accomplishĀ in sixty-two years—transforming Zambia’s physical landscape.Ā

As a nation, we face a critical choice: to either normalize or critically examine our failures. We must decide between the deterioration of our country andĀ the proofĀ that weĀ possessĀ an equivalent level of creativity asĀ the Chinese.Ā

  1. China refuted John Bolton’s statement and it has not been repeated. We know it was an alarmist statement by an envious slave trader wanting to get back freed slaves opting for another master.
Right now we can see US’s more aggressive moves for inert Zambian minerals that it knows are available from satellite espionage. Yes Trump is effecting MASA.

  2. The silence from so-called intellectuals to analyze this article is the reason we normalize and not analyze failure. Where are the UNZA and other universities’ graduates to oppose or propose the motion like we do in debate and make us have a thorough understand of what the Chinese are up to? What is better, learning from the article and doing something about it or waking up and our country is no more? Our politicians need to be educated so that they make the right decisions.

  3. It’s time blacks forgot the tole of the Republicans in stopping slavery. It’s not about parties but individual bloodsucking.
Donald Trump is the current racist slavemaster. He must be Impeached

  4. Call for papers, ‘How can Washington and Brussels be accorded an even playing field in Zambia’ irrespective of Great Power competition? The most informative papers will be awarded an opportunity to present their findings to the Senate Foreign Relations Committee in Washington DC and a reasonable honorarium stipend besides an opportunity to work as a research analyst remotely for a DC based think tank. You are welcome.
