The opposition National Restoration Party (NAREP) leader Elias Chipimo jr . says the removal of subsidies by government is regrettable.
And speaking earlier, NAREP National Secretary Reverend Jevan Kamanga called on senior officers who will occupy offices at the new headquarters to work hard and promote the vision of the party.
Mr. Chipimo says government should have avoided the removing of all subsidies in one go but could have instead staggered the reductions over a period of 6 months so that the impact is minimized.
The NAREP leader also called on government to clean up the oil procurement process in order to avoid unnecessary costs and the over pricing that he said causes high pump prices.
ZANIS reports that the opposition leader said this at the launch of his party’s new secretariat in Lusaka, which will also be the party’s headquarters.
The launch of the NAREP headquarters was characterized by various activities that include singing and dancing, poems by college students and party youths plus drama and chanting of the party slogans.
Mr. Chipimo jr. called on Zambians to be part of the change they need to see in the country and have a desire for change.
Zambia needs a political consensus that is built on values and compelling vision for development that places people, who he said are the nation’s most precious resource, at the very centre, he said.
He stated that his party will continue with its tradition of always being constructive in criticism and speak without insulting other political players.
Mr. Chipimo however regretted the removal of subsidies by government and suggested that government could have avoided removing all subsidies in one go and instead could have staggered the reductions over a period of 6 months so that the impact is minimised.

The problem with Zambians is that they want to live like they a developed nation. They want to have cheap things, free things and bling while seated. This calls for work in order to open up this vast country by improving and expanding the infrastructure. That is the only sure way we are going to move to another level. We can’t heap all our expenditure money on subsidies when we are in need of many other things. If the government borrows, you condemn, it shifts money from this to that you condemn, they increase taxes you condemn but you cry for good roads, more schools etc. SHOULD GOVT PRINT MONEY?

Chipimo is not condeming removal of subsidies but arguing that it should have been done in stages, he is on the same page with PF the difference is the methodology, Mr chipimo I respect your sensible politics, only it is always better to remove the whole cancerous tissue on the first surgery. viva PF.

It is always a challenge to do the right thing in a developing nation.People would rather have a poor running economy while eating than having strong economy while the average person has problems eating.

Those who want to protest can do so but must not destroy property. People have been crying about the lack of development for 50 yrs and cannot see that it is because successive governments chose to subsidise consumption. Subsidising fuel has even benefited the huge mines which can afford to but at real price. PF wants the mines to pay the correct price for fuel but to do this, they have done what we call in Bemba “Kalulu, bumina kumo necimpusa. Six months is nothing Chipimo! Giving people a warning of 6 months will not change the outcome, a weekly increment in price of fuel would have been problematic to the people, it is better to face reality sooner. I remember when VAT was introduced in Zambia and I don’t remember any political party or students protesting about the higher cost of living due to 20% tax on expenditure.
Chipimo wrote articles about the evils of subsidies in his parallel articles and he talked about why maize is bad for the people, what I cannot understand is why all of sudden subsidies have become the best thing to have happen in Zambia and NAREP what to maintain them! Nigeria produces oil, but it has removed fuel subsidy. Which proves the point that you cannot subsidise consumption even if you a producer.
