Passengers, Pedestrian and Cyclists Association of Zambia ( PPCAZ ) president Lawrence Kaoma has condemned United Party for National Development (UPND) leader Hakainde Hichilema for declaring illegal support to contravening bus drivers.
Mr. Kaoma said that any form of lawlessness should not be encouraged at all cost.
He said it is not fair for any person to protect law breakers who have highly contributed to the loss of life the country has faced in the recent past.
“ It was wrong for UPND leader Hakainde Hichilema to offer legal support to law breakers instead of sensitizing them on how to be law abiding citizens and help the country protect lives of all road users.
ZANIS reports that Mr. Kaoma said this in an interview in Lusaka, yesterday.
He said Bus drivers are important persons in society that should always be mindful of the lives of people they carry and all other users’ lives.
He said all contravening bus drivers who have been arrested should be meant to face the justice.
He said there is nothing wrong with the traffic officers impounding the contravening bus drivers adding that all the officers are doing are to ensure that sanity on the roads is restored.
He said protests are not a solution to the problems the bus drivers have adding that there are better ways of addressing them.
He said if bus drivers have any grievances such as corruption by traffic officers let them report to relevant authorities.
Mr. Kaoma has since thanked the Zambia police traffic division and Road Transport Agency for the move adding that this will serve as a lesson to other would be contraveners.
Last week UPND leader Hakainde Hichilema said he sympathized with the mini bus drivers whose buses have been impounded by police for contravening the road service licence.
He assured the mini bus drivers that he would uses two of his party lawyers to help with their court cases.

hmmm,did you hear what HH said to the drivers when they went to cry to him? He actually told them that they should not break the law,that it is prudent that they follow the regulations of the road. He decided to give them legal aid because they too had complaints against the rtsa officers unfair treatment of the drivers. so whats wrong with them (drivers) taking their complaint to the courts? get your facts straight before attacking HH.
I just cant believe this mediocracy or lets call it lunacy. Even murderers are offered legal support if they cant afford there own. Its a human and consitutional right. Who has saved copies of the constitution please? With the shortage of Toilet tissue, we may have nothing to refer to at the rate we are going. There’s nothing wrong with giving legal Aid! It is a practice in all civilised societies. Even the 9/11 accused on Guantanamo Bay have been given Defence Lawyers paid for by American Taxpayers! Do you know that even in Zambia there’s a Legal Aid Department to offer defence counsel to the accused who cannot afford their own lawyers? It is just a pity that it has never been funded because we still have to many primitive people like you in our country!

For example my mini bus was impounded and I don’t need HH to come and help my driver when I have the capacity. Let HH go and help his relatives who have no food to eat in the village. Why didn’t HH go to the funeral of those UPND cadres who died in RTA in Luangwa with cameras? Some victims right now are still hospitalized and NO UPND official is there to offer finanacial support. Wayamba kulabalika maningi, talking about funerals and hunger when the issue is legal representation to the drivers who were found culpable by the law and whose licences were also withdrawn. If you can afford the steep fees despite not receiving ‘cashing’ from your driver, fine. Others cant.
Not all bus owners have a lot of money, many of them are just drivers who saved enough to buy one or two buses (and maybe are still driving that bus), and to have to pay the legal fees, bribes, etc., is a struggle. Not everyone is as lucky as you are, or has the support networks to sustain them.
You are so blind. HH did not go to the drivers they went to him with a cry for help and like any responsible sane citizen HH responded by giving them advice on following the law and he went further to offer them legal representation.
There is nothing absolutely wrong with the action of HH. These Drivers are fellow zambians who have a right to Legal Aid from GRZ or anyone with capacity

I think its good practice and very ethical to first analyze and get to understand the speech of HH before voicing out. Am very saddened to learn that in this 12st century we still have such educated fools as UNZADON or whatever he calls himself. Anyway, in whatever the case I don’t blame you, its not your fault. HH is not the best, but atleast hez better than Sata.
History tells us that when the government loses the support from bus drivers its grip or should i say strong hold is weakened…the battle between PF carders and drivers is very interesting, one thing I know is that PF carders will never win that war.
Lusaka bus drivers can and will not make HH to go to state house in 2016 either did they make SATA to go to state house alone. So dont think that without Lusaka Bus drivers supporting some can make some one not to rule the country. Lusaka Bus drivers is just a small fraction. Leave HH to think wisely to see what can excel him to power not this pet issues of Bus Drivers.
