United Party for National Development (UPND) President Hakainde Hichilema has charged that the ruling Patriotic Front has now shifted its attention from harassing opposition leaders to harassing businesses as the case is with Zambeef.
Speaking in an interview with Qfm, Mr. Hichilema said that the PF should follow the due process of investigations before using some media organisations to destroy businesses.
Commenting on the Zambeef meat scandal, Mr. Hichilema said that even if the company was found wanting, it is a matter that requires sitting down together and resolving.
He said that the PF government should learn to act maturely and professionally in handling matters.
Mr. Hichilema added that the PF are too focused on demonizing and allegedly killing anyone with a different opinion.
The UPND leader has charged that the PF is an irresponsible government that has introduced a dictatorship kind of leadership.
He said that this can be seen from the recent Kampasa shooting.
And Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA) Secretary General Sindiso Ngwenya has said that the recent revelations on imported Zambeef beef products raises concern.
Speaking in an interview with Qfm, Mr. Ngwenya said that the Zambeef issue is one that affects health and that anything that affects health is of extreme importance to COMESA.
Mr. Ngwenya stated that COMESA as a regional trade organization is the high priest for inter regional trade hence wants to know why such products have to be imported from outside the region.
He added that it leaves one wondering if the region is in short supply of such beef products if Zambian beef industry cannot satisfy the market.
He said that there is need to promote intra-regional trade in all sectors.
Mr. Ngwenya said that this will also help empower people in Zambia’s rural areas who own herds of cattle.

If Zambeef keeps up with the arrogant attitude when it comes to sensitive consumer issues and people’s health, it will NOT even require the govt to put it out of business. Ordinary Zambian consumers will do it for them, with their wallets! Already, it has been reported that Zambeef outlets are visibly deserted. A lesson to companies who have taken Zambian consumers for granted for far too long.

HH is not presidential material his only motive is to go to state house and enrich himself even more, how can he support such behavour from ZAMBEEF even if he is one of the bigger supplier to ZAMBEEF he should have kept quite unlike supporting the wrong. He supported drivers, now he supporting zambeef is he happy that we have been fed poisoned beef or maybe he also supplies the same beef with chemicals.
The problem with most Zambians is that they believe anything. The meat imported in to Zambia came from Ireland. The meat is only offal as most of the people there do not eat offal. The Irish government would not allow dangerous meat to be sent anywhere where it could cause damage to peoples health. If you had a mature government in Zambia who is not working towards an agenda, the agriculture minister in Zambia would make contact with his counter part in Ireland to discuss such an issue as offal exported into Zambia from Ireland.
The government has a cardinal and primary responsibility to protect the health and lives of its people. In the Zambeef saga, the PF Government has acted responsibly both towards the people and to Zambeef. One could even say they have acted with restraint towards Zambeef.
Mr. Hichilema, by his utterances, is simply exposing himself as a leader who really does not care about the well-being of the general population and also as an opportunist who will do all to gain some advantage even from unfortunate circumstances.
If Hakainde Hichilema is to make headway in politics, some one must inculcate in him (if at all possible) the attribute of good judgement, which he seems to lack sorely.

Zambeef procures all the products under question from sources with very high Veterinary and Food safety standards.
For your information, Zambia’s cattle have endemic disease such as Liver fluke (parasitic), FMD (Foot and Mouth Disease), CBBP ( Bovine Pneumonia). Consequently, GRZ health inspectors expressly require Zambeef to destroy all the affected parts (like offals).
The company has to follow the destruction requirements and we do. For example, in our Mongu and Namwala Abattoir, out of 1000 cattle slaughtered, we only yield an average of 100 livers i.e. 90% are thrown away. As a business, we had to find a replacement source especially that our market demand is regional not just national; we sell a lot to Congo, Tanzania , Malawi etc and we are spreading to Nigeria and Ghana.
But, surely, Zambeef can use better and less dangerous preservatives that work just as well, if they wanted to, than using embalming chemicals!
No one disputes or doubts the “Food safety standards” in countries where Zambeef imports its beef products from. What people are concerned about is the use of chemicals which have been proven to be injurious to human health (cancer and other health problems). Especially that people feed this stuff to their children too! I think any sane parent or govt, any where around the world, would have reacted the same way Zambians and the Zambian govt have reacted.

@Chisenga. The product of concern is ‘Offal’. It has been withdrawn from sale in all the Zambeef Outlets. The remaining products for sale in Zambeef Outlets is not being questioned. Zambeef is a large company with many Employees whom rely on its on going success to pay there salaries. The Government, like all Governments in all countries, have not handled this very well. They should make a clear statement advising the public which products are suspect, that they have been withdrawn from sale and that no other products offered by Zambeef are effected. This will then give the consumer clear answers and they can then decide if they want to continue to purchase from Zambeef or not. Thanks…

Did you follow how this all thing started?? At first it was reported that tests were done by LCC(Lusaka City Council). LCC spokes person came out that they never conducted such tests. For no apparent reason this statement of LCC doing tests has been changed. Folks, if the ‘Post’ relentlessly publish a story on a body or an individual, then be rest assured Government is behind the whole process. Notice that the paper has unlimited access to Government information where no other Newspaper have access to.
In this case, the ‘Post’ heavily relied on Government bodies and selected authorities to confirm this or that, and they got the confirmations expressly. One head of Government department even swore that ZAMBEEF would never win this case in court, even before the company talked about litigation.
The whole thing was too vicious, relentless and too organized that it raised suspicions similar to the Andeliki Registrar of societies thing.
Contaminated food is an embarassment to all progressive people. Whether this happens in Euroland or Africa, contaminated food must be removed from shelves.
