Six Commercial Utilities have proposed an upward adjustment of their water tariff. The Six Utilities namely; Lusaka, Kafubu, Nkana, and Luapula, Northwestern, Kafubu Water and Sewerage companies are today presenting their proposals to NWASCO in order to defend and justify their proposed new tariffs.
The presentation of proposals is preceded by consultative meetings with their respective customers as required by the NWASCO Tariff adjustment Guidelines.
The proposals will be subjected to scrutiny and possible adjustment by NWASCO management after which the NWASCO Council (Board) will decide the final outcome.
This year NWASCO will use a newly developed Water and sanitation tariff evaluation model which reflects more realistically the actual utility cost of service and promote cost recovery of the urban water sector. The new model that takes into account all critical cost elements such energy and chemicals, will make the process more predictable for both the Commercial Utilities and NWASCO in determining the level of tariffs required.
The new model will ensure that the reasonable cost of service is the basis for tariff setting as determined by the newly developed cost of service model which feeds into the tariff model.
NWASCO also analyses the service levels and efficiencies of the Commercial Utilities in considering the tariff adjustment application in a bid to protect the consumer from unfair pricing.
The adjustment of Tariffs is ultimately aimed at moving towards sustainable cost recovery of service provision as enshrined in the 1994 National Water Policy while taking into account social consideration.
In another developement waterblues have hit Kabwe district prompting the residents to complain about the water supply company.
Residents in Kabwe’s Lukanga, Ghana Avenue, Railways, Highdrige, Bwacha and Mwalala areas have complained that they have had no water for the past two days. They said since Tuesday they had been experiencing water shortages which has led them to draw water from the wells.
The affected people said they did not receive any form of notification from the water utility company and demanded an explanation.
Meanwhile Lukanga Water and Sewerage Company (LWSco) public relations officer Siwa Mwene said the water problem was caused by an abrupt burst on one of the main water pipes. Ms Mwene explained that the company had moved on site and was working on the pipe to ensure that water is restored as soon as possible. She said the company was rationing the water supply to make it possible for the residents to have access to the water at one point whilst works continued. Ms Mwene said the most affected areas were the town center, Bwacha and Mwalala where there was completely no water supply. She added that the company had placed an advert on the local radio stations and would every now and then give the residents an update on how far the works had reached.
Salary increament yatuletelela nomba.
The tariff hike should be used for more than just covering salary increments. In this day and era, new residential locations are still relying on soak away systems. This is so shameful. Then we wonder why the underground water system is contaminated.
Mop
You are spot on. These soak away systems are contaminating our water table terribly and no one in all successive government cares about this. It seem we have scientists who are stooges at the Ministry of Environment and Ministry of Health.
Very good move…. when last was there any water increase if any? Make sure you even conduct door to door supervision randomly, otherwise, you will disconnect, afer you leave an unemployed Plumber will be at it connecting for 10kwacha!
On second thought……
Dig up the land, make a Bole Hole in your own yard, purify water whith chlorine for those of you who cant afford boil the it, you will see how much money you will be serving at the end of the year, people use your free given Oblongata, some of these issues need not be complicated, people just make there own lives difficult were it’s supposed to be One plus one is equal to Two, the other thing i have noticed with my fellow Africans is showing off as well as people laughing at business oriented projects, let them laugh at you, in the end you will be laughing all the way to the Bank, Zambia is not a poor country, lack of practicle thinking is the root cause of all this 50 year confusion!
oh no please,
not again.
they secretly adjusted tariffs upwards without consultations but look at the services we are getting in return.
it would have made some sense had one proposed major overhauls in all these utilities dotted across the country, as they have failed us big time.
you 1diot it is the govt which you support blindly that has let you down. those companies are quasi govt institutions. so blame you ‘power failure’ govt
Matipa. Remove your head from mud from your rear end and contribute constructively. This has been a problem for a very long time way before PF came into power. Utility tariffs are going up even here in the UK so it’s nothing new all we need are strong regulatory bodies that put the consumers first
@Checkov
Even then water here in the UK is about K96.00 per month and since I have been here nearly 12 years now water has gone up only twice by a negligible % . For K96.00( I mean Kwacha not pound) you get a reliable water supply and sewage system. More over water is no longer transported in poisonous Lead pipes.
@chekov, thanks for that positive contribution.
its bloggers like this uncultured matipa and his kind, that are staining our once stainless LT.
its better we start ignoring them 600%.
WATER IS NOT IMPORTED BUT SOURCED WITHIN WHY THE INCREASE AMIDST POOR SERVICE DERIVERY.
Bakapoli imwe – Donchi touch the water!
NWASCO make sure these firms proposed very reasonable tariffs or else it wont be good at all
Within 90 daya we will end load shedding, within 90 days we will reduce tarrifs which are too high, we will reduce the price of mealie meal which is too high, why should Zambia have the highest fuel price in the region, we will reduce fuel prices.
Oh, and we will chase the Chinese for good measure!
Towards sustainable service delivery!
what do you expert after fuel price and expected energy cost hikes??? chemicals, equipment and materials have all gone up. Energy runs an economy
cholera, cholera, cholera is looming.
How do they hike when rains are about to come…God should also be Zacchaeus(Zakeyo) on behalf of GOD should be charging these water companies for exploiting his free gift.
Those utility companies should also be clear on what they are doing within their management structure to curtail costs. We’re not here to be funding luxuries for none performing directors and their followers.
New housing units are not a sincere reason for increasing tarrifs because the pay for connection where they choose to be on the utility’s supply line or dig boleholes where they don’t. Moreover African Development bank has been providing millions of dollars to these firms for infrastracture development and expansion. How it used is anyone’s guess since all costs seem to be passed on to the consumer.
