FORMER Minister of Defence in the MMD administration George Mpombo has blamed former republican President Rupiah Banda for his conviction and sentencing to 9 months in prison by the magistrate court.

Speaking to journalists, Mr Mpombo said that the former President should be happy that he has been convicted and sentenced because this is what he wanted.

“I just want to remain strong in these circumstances. You know these fights started with Rupiah Banda and I am sure Rupiah Banda must be happy that he has achieved what he wanted. You know vindictiveness,” he said.

Mr Mpombo said he is “full of gusto” and that despite raging storms and gathering dark clouds, he can see sunshine ahead.

He has asked his lawyer Abraham Mwansa to lodge an appeal against the judgement.

He said leaders should take a leaf from the late Nelson Mandela’s leadership style of not being vengeful but settle differences amicably.

Mpombo said leaders should rise above vengeance and hatred.

“The whole shebang had a political motive. Politically, we differed, so they had to fix me but what I am saying is that I respect the judgement but this was an act of political vengeance by Rupiah Banda and company but I was fully and adequately prepared,” he said.

Yesterday, Chief resident magistrate Joshua Banda jailed Mpombo after establishing that the former minister participated in forging receipts and stole the money.

Mr Banda convicted and sentenced Mpombo after finding him guilty in a judgment delivered in Lusaka yesterday.

Mpombo is in the first count accused of having stolen K18,000 and forged and uttered receipts and tax invoices as a means of retiring imprest.

“I know that the convict has served the country as republican President in an acting capacity and he is a first offender who deserves lenience. I order a custodial sentence of nine months, which runs with effect from today [yesterday],” he said.

Mr Banda said Mpombo has a right to appeal against the conviction and sentence if he is not satisfied.

He said high standards of integrity and honesty are expected of senior public officers.

Mr Banda said a deterrent sentence would be appropriate for others to take a leaf from and remember to serve with highest degree of integrity and honesty when called upon to serve.

He said Mpombo deserves lenience because he is a senior citizen who has served the country in senior Government positions, the most recent having been Zambia’s High Commissioner to Nigeria.

Mr Banda said it is clear that Luangwa Lodge, where Mpombo allegedly stayed, does not exist in Chipata but there is Luangwa House.

He said even when Mpombo stayed at Luangwa House, the amount accrued for meals and accommodation was K960, which was paid by Zambia Army regional command and not Mpombo.

Mr Banda said Mpombo’s aide-de-camp testified that he was instructed by the then minister to organise fake receipts to deal with a query on why his imprest had not been retired.

He said Mpombo was aware the receipts were fake and knows that signing the documents signifies certifying such documents.

Mr Banda said it is clear that Mpombo did not lodge at any of the three lodges he alleged to have been in Chipata and Copperbelt.

    • Hot air.

Just prepare yourself for incarceration mudala.

Look upon it as an opportunity to grow your beard and expand your vocabulary to include the word “denial” and “responsibility”.

    • Ba Mpombo, if you remind us of Mandela, then just accept the 9 months. Mandela accepted life mu jele, fortunately only served 27 yrs.
Just go to jail and start preparing for the 2016 elections.

    • Ala aka pombo kali shupa!!

Are you telling us RB lodged the fake receipts on your behalf???
People like you need their sentences doubled on appeal, for thinking the rest of humble, law abiding, taxpaying citizens are s.t.ewpid !!!

  1. Ba Mpombo, thats to say you have not regretted for your wrong doing. How is RB coming in your sin, lets be real ? I think mwamupatafye RB, be honest to yourself and repent otherwise you will perish.Accept your wrongs muli BAKALAMBA NAIMWE!

    • Knowing that the Bwinjimfumu cartel hates RB to the bone and that he can’t blame Sata in any way for this, he decides to bootlick the cartel’s judiciary by blaming their arch enemy RB to try and change things for him. The fact is that you stole baba and save your sentence. RB has nothing to do with this issue and never use the name of Nelson Mandela to try and cover your thievery.

    • Is this Mpombo insinuating that RB helped or allowed him to forge the receipts? Is he also saying RB should have condoned criminality? Give us a break!

  2. Mpombo please leave RB out of your cheap problems and concentrate on your appeal. And how do you go to jail for K18000 when Liato is going home with K2.1 bn?

    • Honestly we are in trouble in Zambia. The whole acting President forging receipts for accommodation and claiming he stayed at a hotel that does not even exist. And this same person has a political party and busy telling people to join him. Secondly, what is wrong with Lawyers? If I were his Lawyer I would not agree to appeal. The lodge does not exist for goodness sake, what is he appealing against? These people have a lot of money to waste indeed. How many Minister have and are still busy forging receipts? We are in deep trouble honestly. And we are busy criticising soccer players for using their own talent leaving real thieves who are, without shame and remorse, plumbing our resources with impunity. God redeem Zambia.

  3. Sounds like this bearded Mbombshell has been paid by PF to smear our dear RB with lies.If PF has failed to fix RB with their unprovable charges how are they gonna help you make this one stick Mpombo?

  4. “The whole shebang had a political motive” Did you forge receipts or not you demagogue? Atleast show some remorse,This is a straight forward case even a mere police corporal can nail you! do your time you brouhaha

  5. Just go to jail. You are iust making noise . Is it RB that sent you to cook up fake reciepts for imprest cover up.

  6. Mr Mpombo how do you scrupulously slog someone into your identifiable ills? Be rational enough to be responsible of your crimes.

  7. There is nothing good about the whole issue. Mr mpombo be strong. If its vengence then god knows. Be still and know that he is god….

    • Brenda @11 have some shame. Even if Mr, Mpombo is your husband or brother or boy friend or whatever, you can’t defend stealing. Which God are you talking about? Is it the one who said thay shall not steal? Shame on you , shame on your beloved mr. G. Mpombo.

  8. Nkani yalula mwisho, mwisho ku jele uko mwaya
Kuli amatufi bad kulibipilepo.mukochepo ne chibili
    Pantu mwaba ba convict mwisho.

  9. it would make sense if george said RB advised him to forge receipts. then the blame on the man can stick. should also say we shared the money with RB, we would agree, not this nonsense ba mpombo, it is hogwash

  10. George Mpombo you’re definitely a dull small time criminal. You should have asked the civil servants in your Ministry how to do it. Don’t waste your money by appealing to the Supreme Court. Just accept your punishment like a Lamba man. Use your time in prison to teach Certificate level courses in Rhetoric to your fellow prisoners and warders!

  11. it seems he is still denying even when there is adequate evidence…is it RB who told him to forge receipts..when you choose to be a politician or a public servant, make sure you deal in honest deals so that you don’t give your enemies an opportunity to strike otherwise you will have yourself to blame

  12. Mpombo is a political football for everyone to kick. HH will also come and kick him. I feel so sorry for the man. Just retire from politics and go back kwi Lamba

  13. Ba mfumo, ba mwisho. don’t start blaming RB at this stage. Luanga lodge does not exist. ba mwisho, just ask for forgiveness or serve your sentence ba mwisho. yours, nephew justo shebangu

  14. mupombo, remember that at one time wynter said that you were ungrateful when you started atacking pf soon coming from nigeria.maybe you should have waited until your case was over.pf has used this oportunity to fix you.next is nevers…you were too noise during rb rule boyi.actualy rb was a good man because he could have fixed earlier than sata.

    • You mean Lambas are the stealing type that later plead for sympathy? Surely where is the victimisation here? Don’t play the tribal card.

    • Kwi Lamba kwesu tatutemwapo ngu ukuchingilila ba sakalanyongo. Bamboswa ba Kapombo balibile indalama. Waumfwa webo @Lamba?!!!

  15. Tax payers’ money stolen just like that. That Mr Mpombo is just one that got caught. How did they catch him? There must be more of that thieving in the public service, otherwise how have very junior officers managed to build mansions with those very humble (better kept secret) salaries of the recent past? Just check the register of plot owners at the council registries throughout the country and you’ll be amazed who owns the mansions in Chalala and many other new ostentatious locations in our cities and municipalities. Anyway, if a prominent person in the likes of Mr Mpombo could be caught and convicted, the small flies could easily be caged if the political will to do so was there. Anne Chifungula knows that.

  16. Leaders should take a leaf from Mandela my foot! Now we have to forgive every jim and jack because of Mandela? It is a pity Mpombo is jailed but those are his own making and for being crooked, he thought he could mislead everybody with his jargons. Luckily the courts are learned enough not to be misled by this mwisho chap! Thumbs up to the courts, Mpombo should be reminded that justice has prevailed!

  17. Poor Mpombo…does not know what has hit him. Now mu jele there is no google, where will you find big bombastic words?

Bwana your forged receipts. Accept you did that and save whatever little dignity you have left.

  18. Mpombo you disappoint. On top of your guilt you add senseless lies. WHY? Where have you thrown your shame Brouhaha? Ati RB is happy that I have been convicted. Where are your brains please? Don’t confuse us.

  19. There is very little difference between RB and George. Only that the later has been convicted and can be said to be a petty thief but the other one is facing MEGA cases of corruption in our courts of law. Lets wait and see what happens at the end of these case and i pray that you RB praise singers will continue singing the same song and wont blame MCS for any outcome since you feel Mpombo should not blame RB.

  20. thats y a monkey almost made u drown in livingstone wen u were defence minister,
muli so dull bwana how does rb fit in this? pay back time batata

  21. This mans assertions are as insipid as a rapist saying a short skirt made him attack a woman.

Some sh.it just doesn’t add up!

  22. Listening to Mpombo makes me think of other people caught in similiar or like circumstances…one who steals and lands gets away with it and then tries it as cabinet in collusion with husband at agric and then cry foul after being caught holding a party with stolen money….George like Mulongoti attacked their own party with Dereck…please oh please who hated who? RB maybe a lot of things but celebrating a downfall has never been in his DNA…

  23. He stole.
    He wants to be President.
He has not disputed the FACTS of the case which have been PROVED.
But he blames it on former President!
    ‘Mulekwata insoni.’ The Post

  24. Mr. Mpombo’s hatred for RB puzzles us all. It is clear that He has been found guilty of forgery in his previous capacity as Minister of Defence. Besides RB never fired him but Mpombo actually voluntarily resigned his Ministerial position. Mpombo later decampaigned RB to support Sata’s system which protects a diversity of crooks and thieves – a price for singing praises of the PF. He gained an Ambassadorial position as a reward for waging insults on RB.

Evidence given in Court has no connection to RB either. Mpombo and his fellow Lambas (Mulongoti etc) merely think that their cake and glory slipped out of their hands with the demise of Mwanawasa. Yet RB’s Cabinet was nationally more inclusive. We suspect Mmembe and Nchito have stuffed nonsense in Mpombo’s head.

  25. Awe nensoni tabakwata batata.Even yo family advised u not to talk alot. The sentence is a joke however. He must have been given a minimum of three years considering his status.More is happening in the public service in terms of fake receipts

  26. @20 Lamab man. Leave mwanawasa out of yr comments,LPM was born and bred as a Lenje. He only resided in lamba land cause his parents relocated and owned some business and farms in that area.Thats why he even married a Lenje wife maureen.

    • @lecture:

I thought one of Mwanawasa’s parents was Lamba (If I am not mistaken, his mother was Lamba). So he was half Lenje and the other half Lamba—I am pretty sure I am right!!!

  27. Humble yourself & accept your wrongs Mpombo. Fact is you STOLE! You deserve a harsher punishment than the 9 months slapped on you. What’s there to be vengeful & hateful about the public funds you “ate”. The hatred you’re talking about is actually in your own heart – harboured against RB. ADVICE – Use your jail term to rebuild your tarnished image. Merry Xmas ku Chimbokaila!

  28. “The whole shebang had a political motive”. Did you forge or you did not? Is it rb who told you to forge if you forged? Are you unfairly imprisoned ? Be fair to yourself and to).

  29. 1. Former Labour Minister Austin Liato says the decision by the Lusaka High Court to overturn his conviction over the K 2 billion case shows that the Zambian judiciary is independent. WHY DID HE APPEAL? AND WHERE WILL HE APPEAL NEXT?

    2. FORMER Minister of Defence in the MMD administration George Mpombo has blamed former republican President Rupiah Banda for his conviction and sentencing to 9 months in prison by the magistrate court. THE LAZY WORKER ALWAYS BLAMES HIS TOOLS.

  30. impombo ni mpombo te muntu he should have been kept in the zoo or national park along side with masumba because both are facing similar charges of forging documents

  31. If the PF government is fair, we are waiting to see the Mmembe issue of the 14 million kwacha and the 28 million iya ZRA funds. We wait to hears the second scrutiny of Winter June which Kambwili and GBM talked about sometime back when they were fights within their own perils. What about the single sourcing by the Minister of Agriculture over fertilizer scum?
