An electrical engineer has challenged pupils in Lundazi district of Eastern province to take mathematics and science subjects seriously if they were to study engineering as a career.
Aaron Nyirenda, who works at Kariba North Bank in Siavonga district, disclosed that hard work and good concentration in mathematics and science subjects were important in making pupils to excel in their engineering careers at tertiary education level.
He has since advised female pupils to take sciences and mathematics seriously because engineering was not a career for men only.
Mr. Nyirenda was speaking in Lundazi recently when he presented a paper whose theme was “Engineering as a career” at Lumezi and Lundazi Boarding High Schools respectively.
Mr. Nyirenda, who is also ZESCO senior manager for Generation Directorate Power Rehabilitation and Generation projects, said engineers use technology as tools to construct materials and create products to benefit countries.
And Mr. Nyirenda, who is also a member of the Engineering Institute of Zambia (EIZ), revealed that for a person to become specialized in bio-mechanical, biomedical engineering, civil engineering, mechanical engineering and engineering courses, one needs to pass well in mathematics and sciences.
And in a vote of thanks, Lundazi Boarding School Head boy, Sunday Gatawa, commended EIZ for the inspiring and motivating the pupils, saying the gesture would influence pupils to become engineers.
Meanwhile, Lundazi Boarding School Deputy Head teacher, Davie Sakala, disclosed that lack of qualified mathematics and science teachers in some schools was a hindrance for to pupils to take up challenging careers in mathematics and science.
ZANIS/UZ/KSH/ENDS.
True.
Moin Baby C, what on earth is B.Eng? Let me read first…
more should be done by the govt by deliberately encouraging the construction of more labs and making sure that schools with the facilities maitain them.
however what we are seeing nowardays is the increase in basic schools which not only going by their names offer very basic education to our brothers and sisters.
its encouraging to note that our engineers are going round rural zambia encouraging girls to take up the challenge in engineering. Bravo Aaron
True dat,Manje bakazi muleke ulesi,2day its mothers day, tommorow ati the child is sick, the other day ati my husband, then a funeral :((:((:((:((:((
You are right Mr Nyerenda.Ladies you have heard ka go for Engineering as well.I remember Pa Nortec we only had one lady in Auto Mech unfortunately she didnt even finish the course fi guy fyaonaula.Iam thinking of taking taking my Mum to school to do Engineering Manjebaku Eastern ce kaya if she will make it,oh she has a Z in Maths. :-j:-j:-j
Nine Chale you have just revealed your level of education by not knowing what B.Eng is! :)):))
Nine Chale
Bachelor of Engeneering ba chale naimwe! mwamoneni bwalya amiseka
Iwe ka Bwalya not uku nseks sana ka? May I remind you that I did my further eductation in Germany & I therefore didn’t register this at first glance? Would you know what Hrsg. is?
Attitudinal change is all we desire to have accomplished female scientists. I desire to such a Zambia in which their is a balance in terms of gender as regards career.

you are right, even our own first female Brig.Gen fimofimo is a typical scientist!! she is charge of maina soko military hspt….
Nini Chale….you have made my day…..so tell me what is Hrsg?? you are so so funny!!! i like the way you responded.
Morning all!!
That’s the kind of news we need – at least, off politics. Our girls really need encouragement. In most cases, they fear the unknown. Math, science or even accunting, can be tackled by anyone. There is nothing special about these subjects.
We need strong, tough tested women to take up strategic positions in this country. We need to move away from a culture of subjecting our women dancing at airports when welcoming ‘you know who’.
Yes Nyirenda our fratenity must take its rightfull place in our society. We have had a good time for the past three years and i hope it shall continue to be so. pupils must be encouraged to take mathermatics and the mother of of all science “ADMA” OR RATHER ADDITIONAL MATHERMATICS.
It is high time Lusaka Times woke up & did some proof reading before posting articles, too many unacceptable mistakes,it leaves you wondering who & how old the Editor is? You’re saying Nyirenda is a qualified Electrical Engineer yet again you say he’s employed at Kariba North Bank as an Electrician, further on you say he’s Senior Manager for the Power Rehabilitation Project at ZESCO,there is a big difference between an Engineer & an Electrician,am sure if Nyirenda saw the article above he would feel insulted.
Slowly but surely this world is turning into a womans so muzachiona manjemanje….

Good observation LT should have its own sources other than copy and paste from a lundazi ZANIS correspondent. That said, Mr Nyirende is not an electrician he is infact an Engineer and i hope he wont take any offence for that mistake by ZANIS and LT.
Nine Chale Shani mwemakombe yamfumu. Awe mwankalifye mbafu with loughter mwe. Imwaiche Bwalya taishiba the meaning of Hrsg sure. But Bwalya also that can also be Bachelor of English Language. Nine Chale simply wanted a clarity.Noti ukula shooter ba shamfumu ba pa LT.
Mr. Nyirenda good move. I have nothing more to say.
Ewe wanzelu #4 kodi ndiwe ukwatila na bana? Because it is not being lazy but true, as a mother I cant concentrate when my child or any member of my family is not well. And as a man yourself am sure you would do with some tlc (tender loving care) when you re not well! :d/
The problem with Zambia is people like #6 Bwalya and #7 Baby C. B. Just because you may have been to Uni and know what B.eng stands for does not make you more intelligent than the one who has not.
There is a difference between education and schooling. Schooling takes place in the classroom, while education is broader and more relevant.
Dont let your schooling interfer with your education.
Tribalism at work
They should have taken someone from a different tribe to advise pupils in Lundazi whilest Mr Nyirenda should have visited say Choma or Mongu.Otherwise the move is okey.pupils and citizens need to be advised ,encouraged and motivated always.Zambia I love you
Our female folks are scientists by nature, they are all “Astronauts”
Is this man an Engineer or an Electrician? I am confused with the grammer. Good advice otherwise.
During my days in Ndola, we used to have such talks on behalf of the Engineering Institution of Zambia. I remember visiting that convent secondary school fimo fimo..There were nice gals that time by the way.
#8nine Chale Hrsg is a German qualification ofcourse, forgive me I just always see you blogging I didn’t think your general knowledge was as limited as mine! #23Intelligent people go to university but not everyone who has been to university is intelligent.Schooling exposed me to education more than I would have obtained on the streets.I speak for myself I’m sure some of you got your education off Cairo road.
Ba Nine Chale all you do is just comment useless things and wait for number one daily daily. you comment even before you read. :)) ahh bwalya akugwilani lelo ati muliye nzelu . Mu ona ati kuyenda ku germany then you are better than people buti pa germany niku munzi kwa ba hitler
#28.bwalya Dont say that Germany based Nine chale is the only person on earth whose knowledge is limited. To some extent every human being has limited knowledge ,maybe you could have said his knowledge is narrow or he dalays in updating his database
# 22 Mother, dont get me wrong, certainly i wud need TLC,but am talking about attitude towards work.I was once employed in a Dept that had more women than men,it was frustrating i tell,i had to resolve disputes every day & everyday it was somebody’s mother’s day.If u work with targets & deadlines u will appreciate wat am saying. 4 the record i support women empowerment. :)>-:)>-:)>-
Beng. Ichikosi :)] not ba Chiluba$-)
Nyirenda is an *-:) and not an :)] hahaha:)) what about RBb-), $-) have screwed up our economy
#30 Choma 1
You have talked sense! Iagree actually with you. I dont know why everyone is now dwelling on Nine Chale’s mistake! He wasnt serious! Nine Chale has a masters in the same field! he was just setting you up!
#23
Thanx for that free lecture!
Wanzelu, you are right. employ a lot of us women, then everyday is mother’s day. another day a maid didnt come home. the other day she is preganant, then martenity apart from…(shh you know what)
Thank you LT, you have removed the ‘Electrician’ part. I knew it was a typo but I was almost offended. I mean being an Engineer and electrician at the same time…..Good..
#28 Bwalya, you make my point very eloquently. Just because someone gets educated on cairo road does not make them less than you who got your education formally.
Bill Gates did not complete his undergraduate degree, but he has the most intelligent people with the high levels of education working for him. He is arguably the wealthiest self made man on earth.
Richard Branson dropped out of school at 16. With no formal education, he is a very highly educated, wealthy man, as is bill gates.
#34 baby C, i do what i can my sister! (i assume you are female, apologies if you aren’t)
#37 smal Now thats the mistake our generation and the previous generation have been making- intelligence has nothing to do with wealth.I think wealth has more to do with attitude and perception.Bill Gates saw the future and sitting in a lecturehall listening to some monotonous lecture wasn’t going to get him where he wanted to be.So he quit and voila – he is the 2nd wealthiest man in the world.I bet the guy who was getting straight A’s in his undergraduate class is no where near as wealthy.
Nine chale!! :d:d You are very smart, mwee!

anonymous,bwalya,nine chale,smal!!
please stop attacking each other
“Learning is a long process of mental digestion”
what you know, others dont and what others know, you dont…tapali ifyakuyumfwa apa ,we are all superb:)>-
Nine Chale please forgive me for laughing at you.Your ignorance should not have been a source for my humour.A man shows his greatness by the way he treats little people. That was not my moment of greatness but foolishness. If everyone admitted to things they do not know how great this world would be.Teachable people are always willing to learn new things.Today you have learnt what B.Eng means, by laughing at you I haven’t learnt anything today.Sorry!
24 Choma1
I totally disagree with you!! That’s not tribalism! Pupils at that age get motivated when someone from the same background like them has made it, I am assuming Nyirenda passed through that school.
Jenks!
Amen! =d>. Now end of story!
Hi Bwalya, you’re forgiven.
As #23 smal & 30 Choma 1 helped to explain, I may not be quick to perceive certain academic terms in English due to my German academic background.
#29 Anonymous: I will not respond to your mockery because I know my qualifications.
My ego really took a pounding this morning and I just stayed away for a while but now I’m prepared to move on and blog with you if you are nice about it. Thanks Baby C & everyone else who stuck to me.
Wanzelu at least now I get your heart atitude towards work!
Quick obsevation, in the UK (where English obviously comes from) an “Engineer” does not need to have a degree such as BEng, even an electrician can be reffered to as an “Engineer.” The term “Engineer” describes a persons trade not the qualifications or competence. Hence the use of titles such as “Chartered Engineer” for Engineers that have been professionally assessed. Somewhere along the way the term “Engineer” in Zambia took on a new unique meaning.
:d/:d/
#40 you have are right
The problem with us Zambians, we like laughing at others to show that we are better then them.
Not everyone that is bright has gone to unversity due to lack of finances. Most of the students sponsored by the govt come from rich families hence the poor ones end up with only a High School certificate coz they cannot even manage to pay at E.Hone or any other colleges. What we need is fair treatment by the ministry of Education for both poor and Rich pipo. Some of the students that complete their education under govt spo…did not even do better than those that are denied the chance to further their education.
First sentence should read” the problem with us Zambians is that ………
#46 English is actually a germanic polyglot language and has it’s origins outside england:d so english does not come from england
Being niya fake. iLibe ndalama.
awe nine chale..german background..even hood background can know…search google at least..no excuse for luxuries like ignorance these days…lol[-(
@ JIGGA # 17,
Please avoid thinking locally, there’s nothing insulting in LT’s description of Mr Nyirenda’s job/profession,
like someone mentioned, ‘Engineer’ in most if not all western countries(were the term originated)is simply a figurative expression, cable installers, technichians, electricians etal are all called engineers,
the difference only arises with regards to whether one is chartered or not,
guidance and protection
#46, a quick observation. An ‘Engineer’ is NOT the same as a ‘Mechanic’. To be an ‘Engineer’ one must have at least passed Bachelor level studies in Engineering e.g. Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering or even areas like Computer Engineering. In some countries ‘Engineers’ are required to be registered with a national Engineering body. Engineers may also be required to undergo practical training.
In contrast, a ‘Mechanic’ is normally a vocational level course. ‘Mechanics’ are not required to register with any national institution and may not need to undertake practical training.
Govt should Scrap ZRA tax on educational materials eg computers, text books, tapes and lecturing materials to level the playing field, between rich and poor. t **==
The title of the NEWS “B.Eng is not for men only – Nyirenda” and the content “Aaron Nyirenda, who works at Kariba North Bank in Siavonga district, disclosed that hard work and good concentration in mathematics and science subjects were important in making pupils to excel in their engineering careers at tertiary education level” LT!
Engineering does not end at a B.Eng level. Some engineers continue with Masters degree of MEng or MSc type after BEng (Bachelor of Engineering). Others also continue from MEng or MSc engineering to PhD (Doctor of Philosophy) and yet some continue to Post-Doc. So, LT, please be consistent with the Titles and actual news content.
56. Maestro Hhehhehhehhe continued.
On the news, this issue of taking Arithmatics (for the misused Mathematics) and Science is serious. The South African Government has put this as top priority in their education system. Thus, the message of Mr Aaron Nyirenda must be taken up by our GRZ and the Zambian young people with seriousness.
We need our own industries to do production of good and services to the very end instead of importing everything from China and other countries and Science is at the core of this if we ever hope to do it.
What is the job situation for engineers in Zambia now and future. A number of us studied engineering, lost jobs due to privatisation and switched to other fields in order to put bread on the table. So becoming an engineer is not enough. I know of a lot of friends I did engineering with who are now in banks, auditing, accounting etc. Please address the issue of job opportunities. People who do engineering are among the most intelligent so they can easily excell in other fields.
#6 I agree with Chale, even me I did not recognise it at first glance because that is not the correct abreviation for Bachelor of Engineering. It is not writtern as B.Eng, but as BEng. Don’t laugh at Chale but at the one who wrote it because he is the one who is ignorant about it. T
