Boniface Simutowe put to rest

Zambia legend Boniface Simutowe was put to rest on Friday in Lusaka.

Simutowe, 65 died on Tuesday in Lusaka after a long illness.

The the 1974 silver medal winner and ex-Zambia coach’s death also rekindled some debate over Zambia’s poor enthusiasm to document post-independence written history especially in sport.

Sports minister Chishimba Kambwili said it is not enough to salute our sports legends only when they die.

“We would like to see the history, the biographies of the great men and women in sports.
Government has set aside a room at Heroes Stadium where this history should be. It is not enough to give a betting send-off to soccer legends; FAZ must go a mile further and bring these people together so that we do not go with the history of this country,” Kambwili said in a speech read on his behalf by acting director of sports Raphael Mulenga at Simutowe’s requiem mass at the Cathedral of the Holy Cross in Lusaka.

    • Too bad. may his soul rest in peace.
how I wish it was kachasu chibuku being put to rest mwebantu. it could have been good news for Zambia.

    • Another great Zambian put to rest. Minister Kambwili says we need to keep history. I agree with him. Now what is he going to do about it? Is he going to propose this in parliament? I doubt it. When another hero dies he will come on and say the same thing. Bwana Kambwili if you see a problem make proposal to get the problem solved. Just talking is the same mentality as in 1964. Need for change to put people capable and wanting to solve problems not just talk about it.

Countrymen and women, I gladly receive all of you to my obsequious or rather unostentatious hacienda.

I withal extend or rather give an ineffable gratitude to acting president Dr Guy Scott for exercising his powers of prerogative of mercy in favour of myself and 9 other fellow prisoners.

Guy is indeed an epitome of a great leader and his gesture is not only gotten high on betwixt me and…
