MTN Super League Week 23 exciting and unpredictable – Soccer Analysts

0

The MTN Super League has taken an exciting and unpredictable turn as Week 23 delivers surprising results and standout performances, shaking up the title race and intensifying competition across the table.

Speaking in an interview with the media, Soccer Analyst, Moses Mwanza, said the MTN Super League has become increasingly interesting, noting that Power Dynamos have put up impressive performances, while Red Arrows and Nchanga Rangers F.C. continue battling strongly for the league title.

Mwanza adds that Power Dynamos F.C now have a five-point lead at the top of the table after defeating ZESCO United F.C. 3 -2 and still have a game in hand, a situation he says shows some stability in their position.

He further noted that ZESCO United F.C have been struggling with consistency, highlighting that the team has lost five consecutive matches, a run of results that has seen them drop to 12th position on the table in the MTN Super League.

Mwanza indicated that the situation reflects the club’s recent shaky performances despite being one of the traditionally strong sides in the league.

Another Soccer Analyst and Presenter, Agness Nakazwe, said Power Dynamos F.C look well positioned to claim the title in the MTN Super League if they maintain their current form at the top of the table.

She noted that Red Arrows F.C remain a strong side and are likely to continue as serious title contenders in the MTN Super League, adding that Nchanga Rangers F.C have also had an impressive season and possess the fighting spirit needed to compete for the league title.

In a separate interview with the media, Nakazwe added that while some teams have shown great resilience in the MTN Super League, others have struggled to make a significant impact, pointing to Nkana F.C and Green Buffaloes F.C as sides that have not played to expectations this season.
Meanwhile, Ian Mweene, also a Soccer Analyst, said the MTN Super League table continues to take shape with every game and every minute played, as teams push for crucial points that will ultimately determine the outcome of the league standings.

He pointed out that anything can happen in the coming matches, but as it stands Power Dynamos F.C appear to have the upper hand in the race for the title in the League as they continue to show Great Spirit and consistency at the top of the table.

Soccer fan Chilungu Kandulo said MUZA F.C have become the talk of the week after stunning Red Arrows F.C, adding that Power Dynamos F.C remain the favourites to win the MTN Super League.

He noted that Week 23 has brought a wave of excitement and positivity, urging soccer fans to stay patient with the upcoming fixtures, as anything could still happen in the race for the MTN Super League title.

A 36-year-old woman of Musonda Township in Kitwe has been arrested for allegedly stealing a two-year-old child and later taking her to her boyfriend’s house.

The suspect, identified as Ethel Mvula, is alleged to have taken the child while she was playing with friends in the yard.

Copperbelt Province Police Commanding Officer Mwala Yuyi said the incident occurred on Saturday around 17:30 hours in Chipata Township.

According to Yuyi, the child’s mother, Jane Kalobwe, later reported the matter to police after discovering that her daughter had gone missing.

He said that on the day of the incident around 17:00 hours, Kalobwe was washing clothes at home while her child was playing with other children in the yard. When she finished and went to check on her daughter, she discovered that the child was no longer among the group.

Kalobwe began searching for the child in the neighbourhood and spoke to a woman who had recently moved near her home. The woman reportedly told her that she had seen an unidentified lady carrying the child.

Yuyi said another person later informed Kalobwe that when Mvula was asked where she was taking the child, she allegedly said she was taking the child to the police.

Kalobwe reportedly visited several police stations in search of her daughter but did not find her.

The following day around 07:00 hours, during a search with neighbours, Mvula was identified in the Musonda area of Riverside Township by women who had earlier seen her with the child.

“When she was questioned about the whereabouts of the child, Mvula told the search party that she had left the child at her boyfriend’s house within Riverside,” Yuyi said.

He added that Mvula led the group to an unfinished house where the child was found with her boyfriend.

The child has since been taken to Kitwe Teaching Hospital for medical examinations, while Mvula remains in police custody.

The Kabwe Magistrate Court has adjourned the matter involving a 29-year-old teacher of Saint Pauls’ Secondary School in Kapiri Mposhi District charged for defiling a 12-years-old girl.

Resident Magistrate Catherine Mumba adjourned the matter to April 10, 2026, after the prosecutors from the National Prosecution Authority (NPA) represented by Henry Katwishi told the court that his team was not ready to proceed with the defense trial.

This is in the matter in which Squirk Mwale of Saint Pauls’ Secondary School Compound in Kapiri Mposhi is charged with one count of defilement of a child contrary to Section 138 of Penal Code Chapter 87 as amended by Act number 15 of 2005 and Act number 2 of 2011 of the Laws of Zambia.

Particulars of the offence are that, Mwale on March 28, 2025 in Kapiri Mposhi District of Central Province had unlawful carnal knowledge of a girl under the age of sixteen.

When the matter came up for continuation of trial before Resident Magistrate Mumba, Mwale was found with a case to answer and has been put on his defense.

Facts before the court given by the state witnesses were that the minor is 12-years-old and doing grade four at Saint Pauls’ Primary School.

On the fateful day, her guardian, who is also a maid at the same school, left the victim with her two siblings in the house and went for a funeral when the accused took advantage of her absence and lured the girl into his house and had carnal knowledge of her.

The incident occurred on the night of March 29, 2025 while the victim was sleeping in the house with her sister and brother when the accused knocked at the door and called her out around 20:00 hours.

“Mwale is our next-door neighbor. I heard a knock and wanted to wake up but my sister answered the knock when Mr. Mwale identified himself. The following day I found her in bed sleeping,” narrated the young sister to the victim who is also one of the state witnesses in the matter.

Mwale was arrested and charged for the subject offence on August 30, 2025 after recording a warn and caution statement by Assistant Superintendent Oswald Silungwe of Kabwe Central Division Police.

The matter is being prosecuted by Charity Munyonga and Henry Katwishi from the NPA while Mwale is being represented by Makumba Mulele from GM Legal Practitioners.

The prosecution established a prima facie case against Mwale in the last court session before adjourning the matter March 10, 2026.

However, the court has now set April 10, 2026 for the commencement of the defense trial.

John Nundwe’s rape case adjourned to April 14th, 2026

The Lusaka Magistrate Court has adjourned the matter in which Miracle Impact Ministries Overseer, John Nundwe, is accused of rape to April 14th, 2026 for ruling on case to answer.

In February 2026, Nundwe, 52 requested the Lusaka Magistrate Court to acquit him of the rape allegations.

The media reports that Nundwe also known to his followers as John General, argued that the prosecution team had failed to prove the essential elements of rape.

When the matter came up today, Lusaka Magistrate, Amy Masoja, indicated that the ruling was not ready, hence adjourned the case to April 14th, 2026.

Meanwhile, a 38 year old man of Lusaka has been found guilty of incest, contrary to chapter 87 of the Penal Code, of the Laws of Zambia.

Nephas Sikali, was charged with two counts of incest but has however been acquitted of one count.

Sikali is alleged to have had carnal knowledge of his biological daughter on June 18th, 2025, in the first count and June 21st, 2025, in the second count.

Lusaka Magistrate, Kawama Mwanfuli, has since committed Sikali to the Lusaka High Court for sentencing.

Auditor General Clarifies Appointment of Grant Thornton

7
The Office of the Auditor General has clarified that the appointment of Grant Thornton and Chartered Accountants to audit the Road Development Agency (RDA) followed a transparent and competitive procurement process in line with the Public Finance Management Act and the Public Audit Act.

Acting Auditor General Ron Mwambwa said in a statement to the media that the law allows the Office to subcontract registered private audit firms affiliated with the Zambia Institute of Chartered Accountants (ZICA) when it faces resource or time constraints in conducting statutory audits.

Mwambwa explained that Grant Thornton was appointed in September 2024 to audit the RDA’s financial statements for the period ending December 31, 2024, up to 2026.

He said the firm was selected through a competitive bidding process involving several private audit firms and was among those subcontracted to support audits of statutory institutions.

Mwambwa also clarified that obtaining external confirmations during audits is a routine and internationally recognized procedure used to verify financial information.

He said the process involves obtaining written confirmation from third parties to validate account balances and ensure the accuracy of financial statements in line with International Standards on Auditing.

Mwambwa emphasized that such procedures should not be interpreted as attempts to demand payments from creditors but are part of standard audit verification processes.

Man Hospitalised After Being Set Ablaze by Cousin Dies

A man from Paradise Compound in Matero, Lusaka, who was hospitalised after being set on fire in an alleged assault involving his cousin, has died.

The deceased, identified as Gibson Zulu, had been receiving treatment at Levy Mwanawasa University Teaching Hospital after he was initially rushed to Matero Level One Hospital following the incident.

His sister, Fatness Grey, confirmed that Zulu died around 21:00 hours on Monday night.

Police earlier reported that the victim had suffered severe burns and a head injury after he was allegedly attacked by a man identified only as Allan.

According to Police Public Relations Officer Godfrey Chilabi, the incident is believed to have started on March 8, 2026, around 20:00 hours when Allan’s landlord, 32-year-old Tom Malombo, heard disturbances coming from his tenant’s house.

Attempts by neighbours to intervene reportedly failed, as Allan allegedly continued assaulting Zulu while threatening anyone who tried to stop him.

Around 05:00 hours the following day, smoke was seen coming from the house. Malombo and other residents forced their way inside and found Zulu on fire with his hands and legs tied.

Residents managed to put out the flames before rushing him to Matero Level One Hospital.

Zulu was later transferred to Levy Mwanawasa University Teaching Hospital, where he later died from his injuries.

Meanwhile, the funeral is being held at the family home in Bauleni Compound in Lusaka.

Police have launched a manhunt for Allan, who is believed to have fled the area. Authorities have appealed to members of the public with information that could lead to his arrest to report to the nearest police station.

Chifubu Youth Joins ZNS After Assisting Officers During Bridge Reconstruction

2
A young man from Chifubu Constituency on the Copperbelt has joined the Zambia National Service (ZNS) after assisting officers during the reconstruction of the collapsed Chifubu Bridge.

On May 21, 2025, Copperbelt Minister Elisha Matambo and ZNS Commander Lieutenant General Maliti Solochi visited the site during an inspection of the bridge where ZNS officers were carrying out reconstruction works.

During the project, the ZNS team reportedly faced challenges in finding a place to establish a temporary base, as some nearby residents were hesitant to offer their premises.

However, a resident, Mrs. Mulenga, allowed the officers to use her property to set up their operations.

Her son, Alex Mulenga, also volunteered to assist the officers at the construction site and worked alongside them during the reconstruction works.

Following the gesture, Minister Matambo requested Lt Gen Solochi to consider Alex for recruitment into the Zambia National Service. The request was accepted and Alex was later enlisted.

After completing his training, Alex recently visited the minister’s office to express gratitude to President Hakainde Hichilema, Lt Gen Solochi and Minister Matambo for the opportunity

Tembo Urges Voters Not to Support Presidential Candidates Who Held Senior PF Positions

Patriots for Economic Progress (PEP) president Sean Tembo has advised Zambians not to vote for any presidential candidate who previously held a senior position in the Patriotic Front (PF) in the upcoming August elections.

In a statement, Tembo said the country should avoid returning to what he described as impunity, abuse of state institutions and lawlessness that occurred under the former ruling party.

“Anyone who served in a senior role under the PF regime is unqualified to promise good governance today. That is if we are serious about building a better Zambia,” he said.

Tembo added that some of the lawlessness and institutional abuse still experienced in the country was, in his view, inherited from the PF era.

“We all remember 2021. The Zambian people replaced a bad PF government with a worse UPND government. That mistake can happen again if we are not careful,” he said.

He said voters should examine a candidate’s track record and personal values before supporting them.

“Before supporting any candidate, voters must ask: what alternative solutions has this person offered for national problems in the past four and a half years? Are they documented? Are they sound? Or is the candidate only engaged in condemnation without proposing solutions?” Tembo said.

He added that a person’s life history, values and principles should be considered when assessing their suitability for leadership.

“A candidate’s life history matters. Values and principles are not something you can wear like a jacket depending on the occasion. A person who has spent their lifetime putting their pockets first will not suddenly start caring about the people just because they become president,” he said.

Tembo further stated that competence, vision and focus are important qualities for a president.

“A president becomes the alpha and omega of government. Ministers and senior officials often avoid contradicting them for fear of being labeled disloyal. This means that assembling a competent team is not enough if the president lacks basic competence, vision and focus,” Tembo said.

He added that an ideal presidential candidate should demonstrate achievements in their personal life and not rely solely on political or government connections for success.

Saboi Commends Hichilema Over Proportional Representation for Women

National Democratic Congress (NDC) leader Saboi Imboela has commended President Hakainde Hichilema for the introduction of proportional representation aimed at increasing the number of women in Parliament.

Imboela said the move, which guarantees 20 seats for women, is an important step toward improving women’s participation in national leadership.

Under Constitution Amendment Bill No. 7 of 2025, Parliament would expand from the current 156 constituency seats to include 40 additional seats filled through proportional representation. Of these seats, 20 would be reserved for women, 15 for youths and five for persons with disabilities.

The reserved seats would be allocated through party lists, allowing candidates to enter Parliament based on the proportion of votes their political parties receive during general elections.

Speaking through a TV interview, Imboela said the proposed reform has the potential to significantly increase the representation of women in the National Assembly.

She said that although she was disappointed with the scrapping of the Ministry of Gender and the relatively low number of women appointed to Cabinet, she welcomed the President’s commitment to proportional representation.

“One thing that I have always been very happy with President Hichilema is the fact that he made it very clear from the onset that he wanted proportionate representation. On that one, I am very, very happy,” Imboela said.

She added that while she had concerns about the process surrounding Bill 7, the contents of the bill still present progress for women’s political representation.

“The issue was always about the process. The process was not really fair. It was disrespectful to us as stakeholders. So Bill 7 was never really so much about the content, but the process. The content was not so bad,” she said.

Imboela noted that proportional representation has helped increase women’s participation in politics in several countries, including Rwanda, South Africa and Namibia.

“In Africa, when you see all the countries that are doing well when it comes to women’s political representation, you see that all of them have proportional representation. Rwanda, which is the very best in the whole world, has about 64.4 percent of women in parliament,” she said.

She also urged political parties not to rely solely on the guaranteed seats but to ensure that more women are adopted as candidates.

“So political parties should ensure, as much as possible, that they adopt women,” she said.

Imboela said the introduction of proportional representation places Zambia on a positive path toward improving women’s representation in leadership.

“On that one alone, I commend President Hichilema for ensuring that we have proportional representation. Because trust me, we are now on the right path to ensure that we have a good number of women,” she said.

The Zambian Judiciary has reaffirmed its commitment to Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) mechanisms, with a focus on commercial mediation to enhance access to justice and reduce court backlog.

Speaking at the opening of the Advanced Commercial Mediation Training for Judges, Magistrates, Judicial Officers, and Staff, Chief Justice Mumba Malila, who was represented by Advisory Committee on Court- Annexed Mediation and Delay Reduction Justice, Abba Patel, emphasised the importance of ADR in resolving disputes in a timely and cost effective manner.

Dr Malila said the government attaches great importance to ADR and stands firm on the belief that battles are not necessarily resolved in courtrooms, but at the negotiating table.

He added that the training is a collaboration between the Zambian Judiciary and Pepperdine University’s Sudro Global Justice Institute, which is aimed at equipping judicial officers with skills to make meaningful referrals to mediation and resolve commercial disputes effectively.

The Chief Justice added that the Zambian judiciary has made significant progress in promoting ADR, with 1,540 cases referred to mediation in 2025, resulting in 511 mediated and fully settled cases.

He urged judicial officers to take the lead in promoting ADR and to refer matters to mediation more often.

“The training is part of the Judiciary’s efforts to implement the Memorandum of Understanding signed with Pepperdine University in March 2025, aimed at fostering judicial reforms and promoting the use of ADR in civil and criminal justice,” he said.

Pepperdine University Vice President and Chief of Staff, Danny DeWalt, has commended the Zambian Judiciary for its leadership in promoting Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) mechanisms in the country.

Professor DeWalt said Zambia is leading the way in promoting ADR in Africa and the university is honoured to be partners with the Zambian Judiciary in this venture.

Professor DeWalt highlighted the strategic importance of the training, saying, “If ADR is to take hold in Zambia, it will be because of the leadership in this room,”

He also commended the Chief Justice for his vision and passion for promoting ADR.

“The Chief Justice of Zambia has been unanimously selected as the next chair of the Africa Chief Justice’s ADR Forum,” Prof DeWalt said.

He further expressed gratitude to the Zambian Judiciary for the invitation to partner in promoting ADR.

“We are deeply honoured and grateful for the opportunity to work with you,” he added.

Professor DeWalt also highlighted the next steps in the partnership, stating that his team is working on developing materials for advanced training and training of trainers, with the goal of having Zambian trainers commissioned to lead and promote ADR across the country and Africa.

Zanaco Bank has reaffirmed its commitment to promoting financial inclusion at the University of Zambia (UNZA) and the country at large.

The media reports that speaking during the reopening of the refurbished Zanaco UNZA branch in Lusaka, ZANACO Chief Commercial Officer, Chali Mwafyeni, said the development is a testament for the bank’s continued commitment to making financial services accessible, affordable and efficient.

“Today’s occasion is not merely about unveiling a refurbished banking facility, but about reinforcing our commitment to expanding access, creating opportunities and empowering Zambia’s next generation financially,” he said.

He noted that UNZA remains one of the country’s most influential institutions and, as the largest public university in Zambia, represents a vibrant community of students with immense potential.

Mr Mwafyeni explained that the refurbishment of the UNZA branch forms part of ZANACO’s broader brand modernisation programme aimed at enhancing customer experience and service delivery.

He added that the upgraded facility also supports the national financial inclusion agenda, which seeks to ensure that at least 85 percent of adults have access to quality financial services by 2028.

“This branch therefore strengthens our contribution towards achieving that national target, while investing in the ecosystem that produces Zambia’s future workforce,” Mr Mwafyeni said.

UNZA Vice Chancellor, Mundia Muya, commended the bank for modernising the Zanaco UNZA branch, describing the development as a clear demonstration of the institution’s dedication to service excellence, innovation and meeting the evolving financial needs of the university community.

Professor Muya said the reopening of the facility comes at a crucial time when the university has more than 34,000 students and over 1,200 members of staff who require convenient and reliable financial services.

He noted that having a modern, inclusive and customer-focused banking facility within the campus will significantly improve convenience and operational efficiency for both students and staff.

Prof Muya added that the upgraded branch reflects Zanaco’s commitment to delivering accessible and digitally integrated banking solutions that respond to the rapidly changing financial landscape.

He further stated that the long-standing relationship between UNZA and Zanaco goes beyond routine financial transactions, describing it as a partnership anchored on trust, shared values and a collective commitment to national development.

The Vice Chancellor also acknowledged the bank’s support to the institution during some of its most challenging financial periods.

“Universities are centres of knowledge creation and human capital development, while financial institutions are key drivers of economic growth and empowerment.

“When these two sectors work together, the impact on society can be transformative,” he said.

Government welcomes Fraser Institute mining ranking

0

Ministry of Mines and Minerals Development Permanent Secretary, Hapenga Kabeta, says Zambia’s ranking as the third in Africa and 25th globally reflects the government’s efforts to create a more attractive investment climate while promoting sustainable mining practices.

This follows the 2025 Annual Mining Survey of Mining Companies by the Fraser Institute, where Zambia’s mining sector recorded notable progress by moving from being the 28th to 25th globally, while being the third in Africa.

Dr Kabeta has attributed the progress to stable government policies, increased stakeholder engagement, and strategic leadership aimed at strengthening the sector.

“We are proud of the progress that has been made, but our goal is to reach the top,” he says.

Dr Kabeta explains that the Ministry has implemented several positive reforms, including the separation of policy along with the regulatory functions and the establishment of the Minerals Regulation Commission.

“The President’s emphasis on economic diversification and private sector-led growth has been key in driving this development,” he emphasises.

According to a statement issued to the media by the Ministry’s Principal Public Relations Officer, Kalani Muchima, the Permanent Secretary made these remarks when he featured as a studio guest on ZNBC’s main news to shed more light on the mining rankings.

Dr Kabeta further highlighted that the reforms are expected to strengthen monitoring systems, improve handling of complaints, and eliminate overlaps in the licensing process.

He added that the government has also streamlined licensing procedures, reduced bureaucratic hurdles, and enhanced transparency in the mining sector to boost investor confidence.

Dr Kabeta stated that the Ministry has introduced a Critical Minerals Strategy aimed at promoting value addition to Zambia’s mineral resources and attracting more investment.

“We must not miss the opportunity this time. Every commodity leaving Zambia should undergo some level of value addition so that we can create jobs, stimulate economic growth, and improve livelihoods,” he said.

Dr Kabeta also indicated that the Ministry is working to improve infrastructure, strengthen governance, and enhance investor confidence in the sector.

Former late President Rupiah Banda remembered

0

Stakeholders have remembered and praised Zambia’s fourth late President, Rupiah Banda, for his contribution to the country’s political and economic history.

As tomorrow, March 11th, marks his fourth memorial, the late former President, fondly known as RB, has been described as a leader who promoted diplomacy, peace and stability in Zambia’s politics.

Political Analyst, Oment Siachekutu has labelled late President Banda’s leadership as a period defined by diplomacy, stability, and continuity especially during a critical transition in the country’s political history, following the death of his predecessor, Levy Mwanawasa.

Mr Siachekutu told the media in an interview that Mr Banda’s leadership style was largely shaped by his diplomatic background, which influenced his approach to governance and national development.

“If you ask me about Rupiah Banda’s Presidency from 2008 to 2011, it was a significant period in Zambia’s political history, marking the transition from Levy Mwanawasa’s leadership.

“He was a seasoned diplomat and brought a unique approach to governance because he focused on economic development, stability, and national unity,” he added.

Mr Siachekutu explained that the late President Banda largely continued with the economic policies introduced by his predecessor, particularly in maintaining economic stability, while prioritising infrastructure development and agricultural growth.

He, however, noted that Mr Banda’s administration also faced criticism from some sections of society who felt the government had softened the strong anti-corruption drive that characterised Mwanawasa’s leadership.

According to Mr Siachekutu, the late President’s administration instead focused on maintaining national cohesion and institutional calm during a time of political and economic transition.

Meanwhile, Mr Siachekutu also stated that Mr Banda’s diplomatic experience helped him strengthen international cooperation and attracted trade and investment, while his peaceful concession after losing the 2011 election to late former President, Michael Sata, reinforced Zambia’s reputation for democratic governance.

University of Zambia Historian, Bizeck Phiri, said in a separate interview with ZANIS that the late President Banda belonged to a generation of leaders who helped shape Zambia’s diplomatic presence in the early years after independence.

Professor Phiri explained that Mr Banda served in several diplomatic positions and helped strengthen the country’s international standing through engagement with global partners.

“In his humbleness, he accepted that responsibility. He stepped in not out of personal ambition, but because the country needed guidance,” Prof Phiri said.

Prof Phiri further described the late former Head of State as an inclusive leader who governed without discrimination, but prioritised national unity in line with Zambia’s founding principle of “One Zambia, One Nation.”

“During the global financial crisis, Mr Banda’s administration also focused on maintaining economic stability while promoting investment, including increased engagement with international partners,” he recalled.

Zambia’s Fourth President, Rupiah Banda, died at the age of 85 on 11th March 2022.
