The Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (CCPC) says total consumer protection can neither be achieved single-handedly by CCPC nor government but requires concerted efforts from various stakeholders and the general public.

CCPC Public Relations Officer, Hanford Chaaba, said in a statement released to ZANIS in Ndola today that the issue of consumer protection needs to be given the importance it deserves as it borders mostly on the health of people.

Mr Chaaba said for this reason the commission and local authorities in Kalomo, Choma, Namwala and Sinazongwe districts in Southern province has seized various products worth over K5 000.

He explained that K1,041 worth of items were seized from Kalomo market, K1,265 from Choma while K1,990 as well as K720 worth of products were seized from Sinazeze in Sinazongwe and Namwala district markets respectively.

He stated that the seized items mainly included expired cases of assorted fizzy drinks, juices and sanitary pads as well as cosmetics and various cases of toilet tissue that were labelled in foreign language.

“As such we would like to urge people of Southern province to be careful when buying and consuming food products. Therefore, consumers not only in Southern province but countrywide need to be proactive and report perpetrators of both anti-competitive business and unfair trading practices to CCPC,” Mr Chaaba said.

And Southern province permanent secretary, Sibanze Simuchoba, has urged the business community to desist from engaging in anti-competitive and unfair trading practices.

Mr Simuchoba said both anti-competitive and unfair conducts on the market had the potential to erode consumer welfare in the country.

Mr Simuchoba said it is imperative that traders adhered to the competition protection Act and other pieces of legislation that are aimed at perfecting the market, adding that businesses needed to strive to achieve optimal consumer satisfaction and protection.

FAZ Super Division débutantes Lumwana Radiants on Wednesday picked up a historic result after holding Zesco United to end the defending champions 100 percent start to the 2016 campaign.

A tenacious Lumwana came from behind to hold Zesco 1-1 away at Levy Mwanawasa Stadium in the two sides first-ever top flight encounter.

The result halted Zesco five-match winning run in the league this season but they remain second shifting one point up to 16 points, three behind leaders Nkana who are also unbeaten while Lumwana rise from 13th to 11th place on 9 points.

And the match also pitted Zesco coach George Lwandamina against his former player at Mufulira Wanderers Allan Kamwanga who is Lumwana coach.

Meanwhile, Zesco took the lead in the 6th minute through Kenyan striker Jesse Were to score his 8th goal of the season.

Things were looking very bright for Zesco in the opening 25 minutes before Lumwana switched to defensive mode when they placed nine men behind the ball.

The visitors then equalised in the 32nd minute through Hillary Bwalya before Zesco won a controversial penalty on the stroke of halftime.

This is after Cletus Chama went down easily with the faintest challenge from Lumwana goalkeeper Joel Kanyeba and referee Wisdom Chew pointed to the spot.

Were converted the penalty but Chewe ordered it to be retaken after an encroachment but to Lumwana’s relief Kanyeba saved the ball on the second attempt.

Lumwana then suffocated Zesco’s short-passing game camping inside their own area en route to a famous draw against the champions.

Meanwhile at Nkoloma Stadium in Lusaka, Nakambala’s unbeaten start to the campaign came to a halt when they lost 1-0 away to Red Arrows.

Joseph Phiri’s 42nd minute goal ended Nakambala’s seven unbeaten start to the 2016 season who stay 5th despite the defeat while Arrows rise from 11th to 6th on 11 points.

Kampyongo bans PF military regalia

14

KampyongoThe Patriotic Front (PF) has with immediate effect banned its members from putting on Military attires/uniforms.

PF National Youth Co-ordinator Stephen Kampyongo said PF is a disciplined party and expects its members to abide to the party manifesto and principles.

Mr. Kampyongo who is also Local Government and Housing Minister observed that other non-PF members were using military regalia which has put the name of the ruling party into disrepute.

Speaking to ZANIS in an interview in Chinsali , Mr Kampyongo said party members who would not adhere to the directive risked being disciplined for denting the good image of the ruling party.

He said party cadres in military attires are always connected to fuelling violence hence banning the attire is deemed as appropriate in addressing the problem .

He said PF and republican President Edgar Lungu hates violence as it can breed far reaching negative consequences to the country.

And Mr. Kampyongo has defended the wearing of the safety suit popularly known as “overall” by ruling party youths during political rallies.

He said the overalls are ‘youth-friendly’ and harmless.

Meanwhile, Mr. Kampyongo has advised former republican vice president Dr. Guy Scott to retire from active politics because he has utilized his usefulness.

The Minister said he is disappointed that some utterances by Dr. Scott were in bad taste and fall short of inspiring young people to admire and learn from elderly people like the former vice president.

He wondered how the former vice president has allegedly opted to frustrate PF leadership instead of exhibiting quality leadership and wisdom to the youths.

Dr. Scott, who is now rallying behind opposition UPND leader Hakainde Hichilema, is quoted in one of the tabloids attacking the ruling PF leadership and government.

Government says it will continue to invest in the tourism sector in order to create wealth and employment.

Speaking during Labour Day celebrations in Livingstone, Minister of Tourism and Arts Jean Kapata said government will continue to focus on policies, strategies that will significantly contribute to realization of employment creation, human development and broad-based pro-poor growth.

“Consequently over 7,000 formal jobs were created in various sectors of the economy in 2015,” she said.

Ms Kapata said that as a member of the United Nations (UN) family, Zambia is committed to ensuring that the Sustainable Development Goals set by the United Nations are fully realized.
“In particular, the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal No. 8 places emphasis on decent work and economic growth. Decent work means equal access to employment for every youth, women and men,” said the Minister.

Meanwhile Ms Kapata has urged artistes to continue lifting the Zambian flag high.

Speaking when she addressed the Fourth Edition of the just-ended Zambia Music Awards ceremony at Lusaka’s Radissons’ Blu Hotel, Ms Kapata said the contribution of arts to the health and livelihood of communities cannot be over-emphasized.

She noted the financial contribution that arts institutions make in the communities.
“It is quite evident that the relations between business and the arts offer real change to achieve success not only for each other, but also to generate income for the hotels, restaurants and countless other businesses,” said Kapata.

The Minister noted that currently the arts and culture sector employs about 95,000 people between the ages of 19 and 35.

“Zambia presents an opportunity for future development of arts and culture, and provides a huge and attractive potential for investment,” she said.

Ms Kapata said support from partners like Zambia Breweries helps government to promote arts and culture to levels capable of contributing to the country’s GDP.

“To this end we are not answering the: ‘What can the economy do for our arts?’ but rather, ‘What can the arts do for our economy’,” she said.

This is according to a statement issued to ZANIS in Lusaka today by Ministry of Tourism and Arts Public Relations Officer Sakabilo Kalembwe.

Legal aid has not failed poor people-Ngulube

3

The Legal Aid Board has dismissed assertions that the organization has failed to provide legal services to the underprivileged in the country.

Legal Aid Board Director Anderson Ngulube stated that his organization has done enough to provide legal services to the poor in the country.

Mr Ngulube was reacting to Copperbelt Province Minister Mwenya Musenge’s recent comments that the organization has failed to provide the necessary legal representation to the majority of poor Zambians.

Speaking to ZANIS in a telephone interview in Lusaka today, Mr. Ngulube said that despite having inadequate staffing levels, his organization has performed well in ensuring that the poor get a fair share in legal representation in the country.

Mr. Ngulube disclosed that the Legal Aid has a total of 41 lawyers and 16 assistants who have been tasked to carry out various legal assignments in the country.

He added that the demand for legal services is overwhelming and has outnumbered the supply of personnel because many Zambians are now seeking legal aid services.

Mr Ngulube revealed that in a bid to bridge the gap, his organization is in the process of recruiting more lawyers from the current 41 to 86 lawyers as soon as the institution receives funding from the treasury.

The Legal Aid Board Director said that citizens unable to afford legal services are free to seek legal aid from his organisation and are required to pay K20 consultation fee, K150 for a criminal case and K160 for civil cases respectively.

But when asked on why criminal cases are cheaper than civil cases, Mr. Ngulube said civil cases demand an investment of time to prepare hence the variation in the charges.

Last week Copperbelt Province Minister Mwenya Musenge said that legal aid had failed to meet the core responsibility for which it was created.

Former Republican President Rupiah Banda says the former ruling party was formed to exist and has called on members to ensure that the party continues to exist.

Speaking after meeting MMD President Nevers Mumba to iron out their differences, Mr Banda said there are some cowards who are running away from the former ruling party due to the challenges that have continued to rock the party since losing elections but that it was in the nation’s best interest to ensure the continuous existence of the party.

He said no one should allow the democracy that the forefathers fought for to be eroded by the differences in opinion because MMD was a democratic party and divergent views should be allowed.

Mr Banda also denied allegations that he was causing the confusion in the party saying he was too old to be fighting with his son.

Asked if their thorny issue of the party convention was discussed, Mr Banda said the two camps were still talking and that they will resolve the matters of the two camps in due course.

And the former Republican President has called on the press in the country to help heal the nation from the wounds of political violence that continue to rock the country.

He said that it is in every groups interest to speak against political violence because when war erupts it will affects every one regardless of their political inclination and that people will start meeting each other in different countries as refugees.

Meanwhile Dr Mumba said the MMD stands ready to make a positive contribution to the governance of the country.

He said the party will ensure that a deliberate path is created to ensure that all aggrieved members who wish to return and make a contribution through the MMD and its leadership are amicably brought on board.

The reconciliation talks had collapsed a few weeks ago after Dr Mumba refused to meet the other group when he was invited to try and chant the way forward for the party.

Evangelical Fellowship of Zambia (EFZ) chairman Bishop Pukuta Mwanza , Northmead Assemblies of God overseer Bishop Joshua Banda and a new addition in the person of Reverend Father Chilinda of the Roman Catholic Church chaired the meeting.

Zambia’s latest Human Development Report has indicated the need for the country to diversify its economy through prioritization of its manufacturing and agricultural sectors.

The report has revealed that these sectors have created productive employment at a much faster pace than mining and indicates that productivity in these sectors is likely to lead a path of inclusive development and poverty reduction.

And in a speech read on behalf of Republican Vice President Inonge Wina by Commerce, Trade and Industry Margaret Mwanakatwe during the launch of the report, Ms. Wina says government is already implementing a number of initiatives aimed at addressing the challenges being faced by micro small and medium enterprises (MSMEs).

Ms. Wina also says government is aware that the growth of the manufacturing sector remains critical in diversifying the economy.

And UN resident coordinator Janet Rogan says industrialization can help diversify the economy and increase productivity of capital and labor while helping the private sector to increase and sustain economic output through value creation.

And Zambia Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ZACCI) President Geoffrey Sakulanda says it is true that in spite Zambia recording a continuous GDP growth over the past decade, poverty has continued to increase citing that this is so because developmental efforts are concentrated along the line of rail.

The theme of the report is “Industrialization and Human Development, Poverty reduction through wealth and employment.

Known for the movies, Mistaken Identity and Taste of Life, Nafler Media Creations is set to show their latest movie titled Beads from the Dust which will premier in August at Sterkinekor cinemas in Lusaka.
‘Beads from the Dust’ was written by actor Emmanuel Musonda and directed and produced by film directors, Havley Mwewa and Eunice Mapala of Nafler Media Creations.

The movie is about the untold story of where African people came from; how they lived in the past, what they never knew about their ancestors, who they (ancestors) worshiped and how all age groups of people should relate to African culture and traditions.

In an interview with the Weekend Mail, Mwewa said the production was challenging, especially that they were working with some of the upcoming actors and actress, but he is happy that the movie was successfully done.
“It was challenging working with the upcoming artistes. But as producer, I made sure the actors and actresses performed better than expected,” he said.
Mwewa who is also the chief executive officer (CEO) of Nafler Media Creations said people should watch out for this Zambian made movie, cast in two languages, English and Chewa.
“Beads for the Dust is locally produced, it was produced in Nyangwena after Chongwe town, and people should turn up and support something Zambian,” he said.
And Emmanuel Musonda, the story writer, says the title of the movie alone is eye-catching and sums up the story line.
Musonda, who is also part of the starring crew, said the narrative of ‘Beads from the Dust’ takes back the viewer to the native African culture and traditions with the help of visual illustrations.
The movie stars Emmanuel Musonda, Victor Phiri, Sunday Gatawa and Janet Bwalya.

Republican and PF President Edgar Lungu has said that he will not be crucified for embracing people joining the party from other political parties.

Mr Lungu said said that politics is about numbers and those people leaving the ruling party should not disparage him for welcoming new members from other parties.

Mr Lungu said that those who do so are not politicians and that the late President Michael Sata built PF on the back of membership from the MMD.

“We are welcoming people from UPND, from MMD, from any other political party for that matter because that is a culture that Mr Sata left. Mr did not build PF from without. Where did he get the membership from? He got it from MMD. So anyone who thinks that by disparaging us because we are welcoming other is not a politician, politics is about numbers.

“If people in MMD,UPND are willing to work with us why can’t we embrace them? I’m I going to be criminalised because I have embraced others? I know that Mr Sata did appoint people from UPND, from MMD as Ministers. What has changed? So, people who are trying to crucify me for betraying Mr Sata didn’t know him,” he said.

He explained that he was politically more closer to the founder of the PF than some people cared to know, adding that he was President of the Republic because President Sata trusted him.

“Mr Sata was a politician and I think I was closer to him than some people might want to know and that’s why I am President. If it were not so, he wouldn’t have entrusted me with those huge responsibilities the way he did. He knew that there were others but he trusted me, he allowed me to act as President, he allowed me to act as Minister of Defence, he allowed me to act as Minister of Justice,” he said.

He also called on the PF members to work hard and ensure victory on 11th August.
