Bank of Zambia Governor Michael Gondwe has urged Zambians to support poor people in communities in order to ease their suffering.

Dr. Gondwe said government and other stakeholders were already working towards eradicating these social challenges which the less privileged people are going through.

He said this today when the Central of Zambia and Habitat for Humanity Zambia laid a foundation stone for building houses for two vulnerable families in Kamanga compound in Lusaka.

He said it was unfortunate that fifty years after Zambia attained its political independence, some families were still living in houses which are not fit for human habitation.

And Habitat for Humanity Zambia National Director Joseph Munsanje said the increase in population and high poverty levels among communities have outstretched government’s capacity to provide basic needs such as good shelter, good water supply and sanitation services.

Mr. Munsanje said the high population growth has led to the proliferation of informal settlement to an extent where over 70 per cent of the urban population are housed in informal settlement.

He said the informal settlements are characterised by lack of essential services and amenities making the habitats susceptible to ill health.

Mr. Munsanje said the two houses which will be built for Marvis Malesu and Enedi Phiri will greatly help in mitigating their suffering.

SOUTHERN Province Police Commissioner Mary Chikwanda says the Zimbabwean national truck driver China Maduma 59 who was recently found dead in his truck in Choma did not die of Ebola.

Ms Chikwanda said the post-term that was conducted at Choma general Hospital this morning revealed that the deceased died of heart attack.

Speaking in an interview with Journalist in Choma today Ms Chikwanda said the family of the deceased authorised the post-mortem whose results cleared the suspicions that he had died from Ebola.

“I wish to confirm that the Ebola suspicion has been cleared, because the post-mortem clearly revealed that Mr China Maduma died out of heart attack”, she said.

She said the relatives to the deceased have since taken the body to Zimbabwe for burial.

A Zimbabwean truck driver was last week found dead in his truck in Choma where he had packed to rest after a long drive from the democratic Republic of Congo.

His death raised fears among Choma residents after learning that rumours that it could be an Ebola case.

Mbesuma haunts Orlando Pirates

6

Collins Mbesuma returned to haunt his recent former employers on Tuesday.

Mbesuma scored one goal to help Mpumalanga Black Aces to a 2-1 home win over Orlando Pirates.

The Zambia striker, who joined Black Aces this season on a free transfer from Pirates, headed in Black Aces opening goal from a corner in the 12th minute.

He had another chance fired wide in open space flying wide of Pirates goalmouth.

However, Mbesuma lasted until the 74th minute after suffering a suspected knee injury and was subsequently substituted.

Zambia-Cote d’Ivoire friendly moved from Heroes Stadium

18

Zambia will not host Cote d’Ivoire at the National Heroes Stadium in Lusaka.

The two sides were scheduled to play their Independence Day friendly at Heroes Stadium on October 25 but Government says the stadium has not yet been commissioned.

“Currently the stadium is only being used for testing purposes and it is within this testing period that the remaining gaps will be addressed. However the government of the republic of Zambia will only be able to address certain gaps such as furniture and equipment in the 2015 budget,” The National Sports Council of Zambia stated in a circular.

“You are therefore being advised that the National Heroes Stadium is currently not available for staging of any sporting event until further notice. Staging of any such sporting activities should therefore be at Levy Mwanawasa Stadium or any other facility appropriate for the event.”

Meanwhile, FAZ have said the friendly will be played in Lusaka as planned but has not announced at which venue.

Chambeshi praises Donashano’s Zambia display

Beston Chambeshi has praised his captain Donashano Malama for his notable performance for Zambia last Wednesday.

The Nkana captain was outstanding for Zambia on October 15 in Chipolopolo’s 3-0 home win over Niger in a 2015 Africa Cup Group F qualifier at Levy Mwanawasa Stadium in Ndola.

Malama brought some stability at right back where Zambia coach Honour Janza started him instead of Kabaso Chongo of TP Mazembe.

“It is not a surprise the boy has been playing very well,” Chambeshi said.

“He has developed a lot. It is good for the nation and it is nice for our team Nkana.

“All I can say we give him maximum support so that he can go to a higher level.”

Meanwhile, Malama is currently away in camp with Zambia in Lusaka who are preparing for a friendly against Cote d’Ivoire’s B team this Saturday in Lusaka.

Vice President Guy Scott has revealed that President Michael Sata will not attend the country’s Golden Jubilee celebrations.

Dr Scott told Parliament Tuesday afternoon that President Sata will not be available for the celebrations on Friday as he will still be out of the country for a medical checkup.

Dr Scott who refused to disclose the country where President Sata is undergoing the medical checkup assured that all the preparations for the commemoration have been progressing well.

He also revealed that Acting President and himself as Vice President will officiate at most of the Jubilee commemorative events.

The Vice President disclosed that he will host a state banquet for visiting dignitaries in Lusaka on Thursday night and that a luncheon will also be held on Friday.

He also explained that provincial centres will also host investiture ceremonies where various deserving individuals and organisations will be honoured.

Dr Scott also disclosed that 26 countries have so far confirmed their attendance for Zambia’s 50th jubilee celebrations this Friday.

He said that representatives of the countries that have confirmed their attendance are expected to arrive in Zambia Thursday afternoon.

Dr Scott further explained that it is too early to confirm that no serving Heads of States will attend the celebrations.

Countries that had confirmed participation were German, Tanzania, Botswana, Democratic Republic of Congo, South Africa, Egypt, Malawi, Nigeria, United States of America, France, Mozambique, Zimbabwe Ethiopia, Uganda, Rwanda, Seychelles and Canada.

The Chinese guest had already arrived.

He said it would not be demeaning if no President attends the celebrations.

He was answering a question from Chembe MMD MP Mwansa Mbulakulima who wanted to find out if it will not be demeaning for Zambia to celebrate the golden jubilee without a single President.

Dr Scott maintained that Zambia was going to have normal celebrations despite the absence of the President saying the Ministry of Foreign affairs was handling the situation very well.

Sikongo MMD MP Mundia Ndalamei wanted to know whether Government would release the incarcerated Barotse royal activists but Dr Scott said the issue was the prerogative of the President and that the gazette notice had already been released.

The Vice President said his message to the people of Western province was “We are 50years old, let us celebrate,”.

On the investiture, Dr Scott said the ceremonies would take place in the various provinces by assigned Cabinet ministers.

Earlier Dr Scott said Uhuru celebrations had been going on for sometime now and would reach the climax on October 23, 2014 when the national flag would be hoisted at midnight.

Among other celebrations expected are State banquet on Thursday, gala night at Heroes Stadium where thousands of children and military display will be there, on Friday the Acting President will lead diplomats and servicemen in the laying of wreaths, Miss Zambia Grand finale and Zambia vs Cote de voire football match, among others.

Lightening has struck dead twenty five cows in Luwe village of Chief Kaywa’s area in Sikongo District of the Western Province.Property worth thousands of Kwacha was also lost after the lighting gutted homes of two families in the same village after striking the animals.

National Assembly of Zambia Administrative Assistant Zakeyo Chikunga confirmed the development in a statement in Kalabo district today. The incident occurred over the weekend after a heavy down pour that hit the area.

Mr Chikunga named the owner of the animals as Namushi Muwana 58, a former Zambia National and Broadcasting Corporation (ZNBC) Mongu transmitter employee.

Chikwanda rules out lifting wage freeze

Finance Minister Alexander Chikwanda
Finance Minister Alexander Chikwanda says 14 months is not too long a time before the wage freeze imposed on the civil service is lifted.

Mr. Chikwanda said by the time government finishes the discussions to come up with a properly structured salary arrangement, it will not even be noticed that 14 months has already elapsed.
He said the wage moratorium was only meant for 2014 and 2015 and that his plea to the trade unions representing the civil service is for them to realize that government’s action is also a function of resource availability.

Mr Chikwanda said that going forward the Patriotic Front government wants to correct structural imbalances where 70 percent of the national budget goes towards emoluments and related factors.
He says running government in such way is irresponsible and an abdication of responsibility to posterity.

And Mr. Chikwanda has disclosed that government has no current intentions of borrowing from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) because the country’s internal and external balance is very good and government intends to maintain it that way.

He said this is why in the 2015 national budget, government has indicated that it will ensure that budget deficits do not exceed 4.5 percent.Mr. Chikwanda was speaking to journalists this morning shortly after he opened a post budget workshop organized by the Zambia Congress of Trade Unions (ZCTU) in collaboration with Fredrick Ebert Stiftung (FES).

Speaking earlier during the official opening of the workshop, ZCTU president Leonard Hikaumba called for genuine sacrifice to be seen to affect all who draw emoluments from the treasury including constitutional office holders.

Mr. Hikaumba said his union is concerned that the 2015 budget shows no efforts towards extending the tax base in order to provide tax relief to workers.
He has since urge government through the Ministry of Finance to take concrete steps towards economic diversification and at the same time develop alternative policy measures that will promote expansion of the tax base.

Oscar Pistorius jailed for five years

oscar pistorius

Oscar Pistorius has been sentenced to five years behind bars for culpable homicide after a seven-month trial in the North Gauteng High Court for the death of Reeva Steenkamp at his luxury Pretoria home in February 2013.Judge Thokozile Masipa handed down her sentence shortly after 10:30 on Tuesday morning.

“Count 1, culpable homicide, sentence imposed is maximum of five years.”

He was also sentenced to three years in jail, suspended for five years, for discharging a firearm in a Johannesburg restaurant. Both sentences will run concurrently.

Pistorius will be eligible for his sentence to be commuted to correctional supervision after 10 months. In terms of Section 276 of the Criminal Procedure Act, the accused may serve one-sixth of the sentence. For a five-year sentence, this would amount to 10 months.

“I have taken into account the seriousness of the offence, which led to the death of the deceased, the personal circumstances of the accused, and the interests of society,” Judge Masipa said during sentencing.

“I am of the view that a non-custodial sentence would send the wrong message. A long sentence would also not be appropriate either as it would lack the element of mercy.”If sentences are too lenient, the administration of justice will fall into disrepute and people will take law into their own hands.”A suspended sentence would not be appropriate in my view,” Masipa said.

“The loss of life can’t be reversed. Hopefully judgment on sentence will provide some sort of closure for all concerned,” Judge Masipa said

Government has been hailed for showing leadership by coming out in the open about President Michael Sata’s health.
In a statement issued yesterday, the President’s special assistant for Press and Public Relations George Chellah disclosed that President Sata left the country for medical checkup on Sunday 19th October in the company of some family members to unknown destination abroad.

Speaking in an interview with Qfm News, Alliance for Better Zambia President Frank Bwalya said it is good that government has finally opened up with regards President Sata’s health.
Father Bwalya has since called upon all Zambians to commit President Sata in prayers. He noted that the fact that the Head of State is only going for a medical checkup, the prayer should be that the Doctors attend to him in good time for him to return and be part of the Golden Jubilee celebrations.

[/pullquote]And United Party for National Development (UPND) president Hakainde Hichilema, who has also wished President Sata a quick recovery and God’s guidance, has observed that it is clear that the Patriotic Front (PF) government has mishandled the illness of President Sata from the start.

Mr. Hichilema told Qfm News by telephone that he believes the PF government has been hiding President’s Sata illness for too long despite it being clear to every Zambian that the Head of State has been unwell.

The UPND leader stated that what government has done by informing the national about President Sata’s medical checkup should have been done way back.

Meanwhile the Grand Coalition on the Demand for the People Driven Constitution has described government’s disclosure of President Sata’s travel abroad for a medical checkup as a positive.
Coalition Chairperson Leonard Chiti said the fact that many people know that President Sata has not been enjoying the best of his health in the recent time, is obviously necessary that he may require the necessary medical attention.

Father Chiti told Qfm News in a separate interview that the Coalition however advises that once the Head of State returns from his medical checkup and after the Jubilee celebrations, he should proceed on medical leave in order for him to recuperate.

MMD Kasenengwa member of Parliament (MP) Victoria Kalima has joined calls for former President Rupiah Banda to come back to active politics, adding that he is a better leader than party president Nevers Mumba.

Ms Kalima said she has nothing against Dr Mumba but that if members want Mr Banda to be their leader, they should be given what they want.

She said in an event that Mr Banda, popularly known as RB, contests the presidency at the MMD convention, the former president would go through.

“There is a leadership crisis at the moment and people want to see a president who can take the country forward and they feel that RB can do that,’’ Ms Kalima said.

She said Mr Banda implemented good policies as president and that he has the experience to lead the country.

Ms Kalima said many Zambians are calling on the former president to come back because they have tasted his leadership qualities.

“Other than President Sata, I think RB is a better leader. When you look around, there is no one with good leadership qualities,’’ she said.

Ms Kalima said many Zambians have confidence in RB and that they feel that he must come back into active politics.

She said Mr Banda is popular countrywide compared to other leaders who are just popular in certain parts of the country.

Presidents are born and not made-Kambwili

MINISTER of Sport, Youth and Child Development Chishimba Kambwili

MINISTER of Youth and Sport Chishimba Kambwili has advised those with presidential ambitions in PF to note that presidents are born and not made.

Mr Kambwili said presidential aspirants will end up with the shock of their lives if they do not succeed.

He said during Zambia National Broadcasting Corporation (ZNBC)’s Sunday Interview programme that if a person was born to be president, they will become one no matter the circumstances.

“Just look at Mwanawasa, he had retired from politics and was doing his own business but because he was born president, he became one. The same applies to the former president,” Mr Kambwili said.

The minister said he will not waste time having presidential ambitions because if he was born president, he will become one and that he is currently concentrating on his ministerial job.

“When people understand this, they will never preoccupy themselves with presidential ambitions,” Mr Kambwili said.

The people have got no area to dump rubbish, hence dumping near the side of Ndola road. this supposed to be the job for the council.feeder roads also are blocked with rubbish in most areas of wusakile

Wusakile Township residents this morning took to the streets to riot over erratic water supply by Nkana Water and Sewerage Company.

And police in Kitwe have arrested eight in connection with the riotous behaviours.

Kitwe District Police Commanding Lizzy Machina said the eight where picked up the process as they rioted over the erratic water supply in the area.

Ms Machina bemoaned the use of young boys in the riotous saying it was very dangerous.

She urged parents to desist from taking with them their children when there are riots.

‘I am urging these parents please these children must be kept away from such things, because if we clash those children will be vulnerable’ Ms Machina said.

‘We have managed to contain the situation now because when we came it was worse than it is now, we found the road blocked’ Ms Machina said.

Meanwhile the residents have complained over the continued erratic water supply.

‘It’s very unfair why we should be the only ones without water, we always have to go with containers in far areas to fetch water, and it’s too much. Why should we have water coming at 02:00hrs when we are sleeping? Sharon Bwalya Questioned’.

‘we always forced to engage in these acts because we don’t get the answers when we approach them formally, we have been engaging Nkana water but they are not doing anything that’s why people are rioting now’ She added.

Efforts to get a comment from Nkana Water and Sewerage Company proved futile as they were still addressing the residents.

Obama sends a message of congratulations to President Michael Sata on Zambia’s 50th

Obama
UNITED States President Barack Obama has sent a message of congratulations to President Michael Sata on Zambia’s 50th independence celebrations which fall on October 24th.

President Obama said the American people joined Zambians in celebrating the historic milestone.

“As you celebrate the 50th anniversary of Zambia’s independence on October 24, please allow me to offer warmest congratulations from the American people to you and the people of Zambia on this historic milestone,” President Obama said.

“The United States joins you in celebrating your Golden Jubilee as our countries have enjoyed a strong partnership throughout your country’s history.”

Mr Obama said he looked forward seeing Zambia’s democracy and prosperity to continue to grow.

“As we reflect on fifty years of independence, we look forward to seeing democracy and prosperity continue to grow in Zambia and cooperating bilaterally on many important issues,” Mr Obama said in a statement released by the US Embassy in Lusaka.

President Obama’s message is founded on 50 years of mutual US-Zambian respect and exchange of ideas, culture, and values.

“One of our favourite photographs that we have in our Embassy is of US civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr together with Zambian first president Dr Kenneth Kaunda, taken in 1960,” the statement reads further.

It was only four years after the momentous meeting that former US president Lyndon B Johnson penned his congratulatory message to Dr Kaunda on the independence of Zambia.

“Former President Johnson wrote in his 1964 message, ‘Zambia’s independence will permit us to strengthen the ties of friendship and cooperation which have been built up between Zambians and Americans over many years.’ Now in 2014, we have the unique privilege to reiterate that very same message of 50 years ago,” Mr Obama said.

In recent years, former US presidents Bill Clinton and George W Bush have visited health programmes in Zambia, and former US secretary of state Hillary Clinton led an African Growth and Opportunities Act conference in Lusaka.

In this Jubilee year, Zambia has been visited by US Second Lady Dr Jill Biden and celebrity US singer Wintley Phipps, who sang freedom songs during Golden Jubilee concerts in September 2014.

President and Ms Michelle Obama welcomed Vice-President Guy Scott and his wife Charlotte to the US for the African Leaders Summit in Washington in August.

New US Ambassador to Zambia Eric Schultz, who arrived in Lusaka on Sunday, is strongly committed to building on the solid foundation of 50 years of US-Zambia partnership and warm relations.

These include leading US efforts to partner with Zambians to combat HIV/AIDS and other health challenges, to expand bilateral trade and investment and to implement the Millennium Challenge Corporation Compact with Lusaka Water and Sanitation Programme to improve water, sanitation and drainage in Lusaka.

Mr Schultz also intends to engage with Zambians on democracy, good governance and youth leadership issues as well as find new paths for collaboration that will lead into the next 50 years of the two countries’ partnership.

Meanwhile, German Chancellor Angela Merkel has nominated her personal envoy for Africa, Guenter Nooke, to represent Germany at Zambia’s 50th Independence anniversary celebrations this Friday.

Mr Nooke, who is expected to arrive in the country today, will during his stay in Zambia also hold bilateral discussions on German-Zambia relations with officials from the ministries of Foreign Affairs, Agriculture and Livestock and Mines, Energy and Water Development.

This is contained in a statement released in Lusaka yesterday by head of development cooperation at the German Embassy, Frank Hofman.
