Zesco boot Mighty out of Barclays Cup

1

Three time winners Zesco United reached the2014 Barclays Cup semifinals on Saturday following a 2-0 win over a brave Mighty Mufulira Wanderers side at Nkoloma Stadium in Lusaka.

Mighty had missed real chances before midfielder Maybin Mwaba headed Zesco in front on 22 minutes after he was set up by Jackson Mwanza.

Mwanza graduated from provider to scorer when he doubled Zesco’s lead on the nick of half time with a solo effort after dribbling past Wanderers keeper Daniel Phiri.

The Division One North side missed a chance to equalize as Taonga Bwembya saw his power shot hit the crossbar in the 30th minute.

Wanderers were the first one to create a serious opportunity with striker Brian Ambungeni heading slightly over the bar after four minutes.

In the second half, Mighty fruitlessly tried to fight back but their best was not good enough to crack George Lwandamina’s Zesco in this lunch time kickoff match.

Later at Nkoloma Stadium, Napsa Stars joined Zesco in the last four after edging Lusaka Dynamos 1-0 in the second quarterfinal tie.

Ivorian Jean Paul Simao scored the decisive goal for the 2012 Barclays Cup winners.

PF is making inroads in opposition strongholds – FODEP

10

fodep

The Foundation for Democratic Process (FODEP) says it is an undeniable fact that the electoral results from the five by-elections show that PF is making inroads in opposition strongholds as evidenced in Vubwi, Kasenengwa, Solwezi, Mkushi and Zambezi West constituencies.

And FODEP has observed that the just ended parliamentary by-elections were conducted in a transparent manner.

Speaking during a press briefing in Lusaka today, FODEP Executive Director MacDonald Chipenzi says this is so because some of the constituencies have been associated with the ruling parties for some time except that 2011 elections put them on the other side of the coin.

Mr. Chipenzi says the analysis has shown that Solwezi Central and Kasenengwa constituencies both located in an urban set-up were won by the opposition while Mkushi South, Vubwi and Zambezi West which are rural constituencies were scooped by the ruling party.

Mr. Chipenzi has however, bemoaned the high levels of voter apathy that characterized the by-elections.

He says Zambezi West had 10,206 voters, only 4,924 voters cast their votes representing 48.2% the highest turn out in this round of by-elections while Kasenengwa with 41, 795 had 15,141 voters voting representing 36.2% turnout.

The FODEP Executive Director furthermore explains that Vubwi had 18,084 registered voters and only 6,693 voters managed to cast their votes representing 37.0% while Solwezi Central with 52,900 voters only had about 10,403 casting their votes representing 19.67% turnout.

He furthermore states that Mkushi South in Luano District had 12,793 only about 4,738 voters casting their vote representing 37.04% saying this illustrates that all the constituencies failed to score 50% voter turnout.

Mr. Chipenzi says the victories and losses scored were as a result of various variables ranging from political party and candidates’ strengths and popularities respectively to urban-rural divide and desire to be close the party in power.

He says another interesting aspect is that the election results were in favour of the ruling party in both constituencies where new districts have been declared such as Vubwi and Mkushi South.

PAZA President, Andrew Sakala,

The Press Association of Zambia (PAZA) has called on Media Practitioners to be ethical and avoid creating division in the country in the execution of their duties.

Speaking in an interview with ZANIS yesterday, PAZA President Andrew Sakala said journalists should ensure they report professionally and work for the public interest.

Mr Sakala however dismissed appeals from Open Society Foundation (OSF) for Lawmakers to criminalise tribal talk in Zambia.

“The country already has sufficient laws in place prohibiting such behaviour in the constitution and penalties are correctly stated in the penal code, what Zambia needs is the correct enforcement of the law against tribal talk “, he said.

Mr Sakala has since appealed to law enforcement agencies to correctly enforce laws that will not silence the media but allow for promotion of professional journalism in the country.

He said if journalist are found wanting they should face the law.

Mr Sakala’s sentiments come in the wake of comments by the Open Society Foundation which appealed to investigative wings to reprimand media houses perpetuating tribal sentiments.

Mindolo squatters yesterday stormed Kitwe Central Hospital and attempted to speak to first Lady Dr Christine Kaseba over their plight.

The squatters whose houses were demolished by Kitwe City Council early this year wanted to speak to Dr Kaseba when she went to officiate at the Kitwe School of Nursing and Midwifery golden jubilee celebrations.

However, the residents were not allowed to talk to the first lady.

The squatters who are currently camped in tents at Helen Kaunda School grounds lamented that they have nowhere to go as the deadline approaches for them to vacate the temporal shelter.

DMMU has given the squatters up to September 22 to leave the camp but they have maintained that they have nowhere to go.

The residents told ZANIS in Kitwe yesterday that they were aware of the deadline set for them by the disaster management and mitigation unit (dmmu) to leave the camp at Helen Kaunda School grounds but have nowhere to go.

Speaking on behalf of others, Ireen Mukuka appealed to government to show compassion on them and give them an alternative place where they can build permanent houses.

Ms Mukuka urged government to quickly address their plight before the onset of the rain season because the tents they are living in are not ideal.

And when contacted Kitwe City Council Public Relations Manager Dorothy Sampa said the council has no land to give to the squatters.

Ms Sampa urged the squatters to apply for land from the council by following the normal procedure.

Zambezi West Patriotic Front (PF) campaign manager, Wilbur Simuusa has challenged the opposition to fulfil their pledge to resign if there will be no Presidential by- elections in the country in four months.

Speaking after the election victory of the new PF Zambezi West MP, Christabel Ngimbu in Zambezi , Mr Simuusa said he is looking forward to the opposition to fulfil their pledge to quit their party if there will be no by-elections in four months.

Mr Simuusa said complaints of campaign malpractices during the run-up to the September 11 Zambezi West by-election are unfounded.

He said the ruling PF campaigned well in accordance with the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) directives.

Mr Simuusa further urged the opposition, especially the UPND to accept defeat to the PF.

He was reacting to concerns raised by the opposition who were alleging that the PF campaign team were involved in electoral malpractices.

Mr Simuusa said his committee was ready to face the opposition head on.

He added on that his committee was not involved in any electoral malpractices as alleged by the opposition.

Meanwhile, the newly elected area Member of Parliament, Christabel Ngimbu has assured the people in her constituency that she will lobby for the construction of a bridge across the Zambezi River.

The people of Zambezi have depended on using the pontoon for transport as well as to ferry goods and services.

Will Sate Sate and Kabwe shine in Barclays Cup?

3

Notable prospects overlooked or snubbed by Honour Janza for the 2015 AFCON qualifiers resume club duties this weekend hoping to make a statement.

On the homefront, utility winger Roderick Kabwe will take to the field on Sunday when Zanaco face Konkola Blades in a 2014 Barclays Cup quarterfinals.

Kabwe who is joint third on the FAZ Super Division scorers charts with nine goals was one of two axed shocks by Janza’s ahead of Zambia’s poor showing in their opening two Group F qualifiers.

The winger was dropped despite an impressive performance for Zambia in a 3-1 friendly home win over Sudan on August 31.

On the same date, striker Ronald Kampamba who was dropped twice in a space of five days by Janza prior to the Group F qualifiers kick off will be in action for Nkana when they face Power Dynamos in a Barclays Cup quarterfinals derby at Nkoloma Stadium in Lusaka.

Kampamba is currently second on the top scorers charts with ten league goals, three behind Zesco United’s Jackson Mwanza.

The Nkana striker has another five goals in continental action bringing his tally to 15 goals this season.

Sunday’s Cup derby will also pit Kampamba with Power striker Alex Ngonga who has nine goals so far this season after rediscovering his form over the last 30 days with four goals.

Overseas, midfielder Lubambo Musonda and Evans Kangwa will also be hoping to strengthen their claim to make the trip to Niger on October 11.

Lubambo is expected to be in action today for Armenian league leaders Ulisses who host bottom placed Mika.

The ex-Power midfielder has walked straight into Ulisses starting XI playing four games and scoring one goal since moving there in August on a one year deal.

And in Israel, Hapoel Ra’anana kick-off their 2014/2015 league season today as Kangwa hopes for his third game with his new club after making his competitive debut in cup action last month.

Churches stranded, as Government stops them from using classrooms

21

Most churches in Kasama are stranded with places of worship following the government’s move to stop them from conducting their prayers in schools.

A survey by ZANIS found that most churches did not conduct their church services over the weekend while some of them had mass in private houses.

A concerned Christian who sought anonymity observed that those conducting prayers in classes are sprinter groups due to leadership wrangles in their churches and has advised them to reconcile with their mother body churches.

A teacher Bridget Chabala welcomed the move taken by government to stop prayers from being conducted in schools as it disturbed pupils from studying in classes during their spare time.

And a named Pastor who sought anonymity has regretted the step taken by government saying securing a plot to build a church is a process which takes a long time and wondered how he would keep his worshipers together.

THE Ministry of Health has strengthened the directorate of mobile healthcare services to ensure that it effectively enhances health service delivery.

Health Deputy Minister Chitalu Chilufya said strengthening the directorate was aimed at ensuring healthcare services across the continuum of care from primary to tertiary.

Dr Chilufya said this when he delivered a basic life support ambulance to Kasenegwa zonal rural health centre in Chipata.

“We want the country to have a comprehensive mobile health service from primary to tertiary care, to ensure that obstetric cases are attended to effectively to reduce on mortality rate, especially in maternal and children,” He said.

Dr Chilufya said the mobile health service was an opportunity to reach out to rural areas where there was limited infrastructure.

“You will see more dedicated mobile health services for public health to offer services to people in antenatal, immunisation of children and other services,” Dr Chilufya said. “That’s a true concept, it is not only limited to mobile hospitals but it will be comprehensive.”

He said the referrals from lower health centres to higher health centres must be improved through a powerful transport system.

“The PF Government has decided to strengthen referral systems by procuring ambulances which would be placed in zonal facilities so that the response time to obstruct emergencies is improved. That way we will be preventing maternal mortality,” Dr Chilufya said.

He said the Government would improve infrastructure at Kasenegwa Clinic, which is a zonal facility, by improving solar power in the interim before hydro power is connected.

Chief Mazimabwe of the Nsenga people in Eastern Province commended the Government for the ambulance, which he said would ease the burden of the people of Kasenengwa in addressing referral cases to Chipata General Hospital.

“I want to thank the PF Government. These are the things that we never dreamed of, but we now see them. Our school children only used to see ambulances in books but now they are able to see them,” he said.

Chief Mazimabwe appealed to the Ministry of Health to upgrade Kasenegwa rural health centre into a first-level hospital.

He also appealed to the Government to consider connecting hydropower to the clinic.

Chipata District Commissioner Kalunga Zulu said the province had seen tremendous improvements in health infrastructure with a district hospital construction underway.

Mr Zulu said construction of the district hospital would compliment the services of Chipata General Hospital in service deliver.

Eastern provincial medical officer Kennedy Malama said the province had received four life-support ambulances, and 15 basic ambulances to improve on referral systems within the shortest possible time.

THE Governments of Zambia and Botswana have officially launched the commencement of construction works for Kazungula Bridge across the Zambezi River.

Zambia’s Vice President Guy Scott and Botswana Vice President Ponatshego Kedikilwe officiated at the ground breaking ceremony yesterday on the Botswana side of the Kazungula Border.

The US$ 259.3 project, whose construction works would start in few weeks time from now, would be completed by 2018.

It will be financed by the Governments of Zambia and Botswana with financial assistance from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and the African Development Bank (AfDB).

Speaking during the ground breaking ceremony, Dr Scott said it was good that the project was finally being implemented as it had been on the drawing board for more than 10 years.

Dr Scott appealed to the project team and the contractor, Daewoo Engineering and Construction including the supervising engineers, to ensure that the project was delivered within the planned timeframe and cost.

He said the project should also be implemented according to stipulated standards and quality that the two Governments have prescribed in the contract that was signed a week ago,” Dr Scott said.

Dr Scott said the project would create jobs, facilitate the movement of products within the region including agricultural inputs and mining equipment and increase opportunities for intra and regional trade activities.

He also said the project would reduce the transit time from 36 hours to two hours and reduce transportation costs and the cost of doing business in general and ultimately increase revenue for the two countries.

“The two peoples of Botswana and Zambia have waited for this project for this long and some imagined that this day would come in their life-time.

The two Governments are equally delighted that the long awaited project is finally taking off today,” Dr Scott said.

He said the Kazungula route had become increasingly popular to transporters shipping freight between the major ports of South Africa, to and from Lusaka, the mining towns of Northern Zambia and the Katanga province of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

Dr Scott said the current border facilities on both sides of Botswana and Zambia were inadequate as only 30 trucks could be ferried in each direction in a day.

Speaking at the same gathering, Dr Kedikilwe urged the Ministries of Transport in the two countries to remain diligent in their work and guard against unnecessary cost escalations during construction.

Dr Kedikilwe also urged the two Ministries to exercise professionalism to avoid delays and unnecessary litigation saying people’s expectations on the project were very high.

He said the ground breaking ceremony was a landmark project to the two countries and the rest of the Southern African Development (SADC) region and the entire continent.

Dr Kedikilwe said delays for the project were history currently the two countries were determined to executive the project.

“This project demonstrates our resolve and determination to promote job creation as well as boost trade and regional integration,” he said.

He said it was envisaged that the bridge would be a hub for economic activities for countries in Southern Africa.

Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) resident representative Atsushi Nakagawa congratulated the Governments of Zambia and Botswana for implementing the Kazungula Bridge project.

Mr Nakagawa said the project would improve the movement of goods and
people in Southern Africa and beyond in the North South Corridor
(NSC).

He said JICA had been and would remain a committed partner in working closely with the two African countries to achieve their goals of enhancing human resource development, infrastructure development and institutional strengthening.

“We wish to register our sincere appreciation to the efforts of both countries and JICA hopes to continue working with the two African friends,” he said.

Africa Development Band (AfDB) resident representative for Malawi Andrew Mwaba said the project was a major milestone in addressing trade bottlenecks between the two countries.

Dr Mwaba said his Bank, which was celebrating 50 years this year, was repositioning itself to respond to the needs and the transformation of the continent.

“This project will strengthen the already existing cooperation between the AfDB and the two countries.

As a Bank, we will continue to assist countries in Africa on matters of bridging the infrastructure gap,” he said.

Botswana Transport and Communications Minister Nonofo Molefhi said the Bridge would join Zambia and Botswana in facilitating the movement of goods and people of the SADC region.

Mr Molefhi said the Bridge and the one-stop border post were expected to unlock bilateral trade by speeding up the processing and movement of goods and people as well as create new opportunities and prospects in the region.

“I am very positive that the residents of Kazungula and neighbouring villages will never ever experience problems due to ferry breakdowns as the bridge and border facilities are coming at the time when they are needed the most,” he said.

Zambia’s Transport, Works, Supply and Communication Minister Yamfwa Mukanga said Kazungula Bridge was one of the major projects to be undertaken in Zambia under the Patriotic front (PF) Government.

In his vote of thanks, Mr Mukanga said the project was also expected to enhance the warm and cordial relations existing between the two countries.

“ Our team will work tirelessly to do our level best to deliver the project according to the required standards and expectations of the two nations,” Mr Mukanga said.

First Lady Dr Christine Kaseba

FIRST Lady Christine Kaseba has said community participation is vital in the health sector of the country.

Speaking during the Kitwe Central Hospital (KCH)’s Open Day as well as the Golden Jubilee celebrations for Kitwe School of Nursing on Friday, Dr Kaseba said efforts by the Government to improve the health sector would be in vain without community participation.

The First Lady said the Government was aware that effective communication between a health facility and the people that it served was important as it encouraged dialogue, which resulted in the exchange of information and knowledge that ultimately improved service delivery.

Dr Kaseba said Open Days were also important in affording the community with an opportunity to interact with the hospital staff with a view to learning more about the successes and challenges health workers faced.

She said this was one way members of the public could gain a better understanding and appreciation of services that an institution provided.

The First Lady said doing so would also reduce occasional confrontations, misgivings and conflicts between staff and the public, which normally were a result of wrong perceptions and misconceptions among the people.

“Let me stress here that for these Open Days to be successful, it is vital that all parties share a common understanding of the goals and outcomes of the Open Day initiative. These Open Days are meant to improve the flow of information from hospitals to the public,” Dr Kaseba said.

“Efforts by the Government to improve the health sector will be in vain without community participation.”

Dr Kaseba said it was gratifying that KCH management had recognized the importance of community participation in the delivery of services and, as such, had opened the hospital doors to the public.

She encouraged management to take note of all the observations and comments from the public as that was the only way they could check themselves.

Dr Kaseba further called on health workers in Zambia to have empathy towards patients for their work to be satisfying and appreciated.
She also implored the community to stop vandalising hospital property, to help in repairs and maintenance of hospital infrastructure and to demand for accountability on how resources given to the hospital by both the Government and donors were used.

The First Lady, who toured the KCH and various Open Day stands, further promised to see how best a 16-year-old girl who had a two-month-old baby born with both female and male sex organs could be assisted.

KCH senior medical superintendent John Mwewa said the institution had undergone many development changes in infrastructure development as well as increasing programmes offered.

Dr Mwewa, however, said the institution was faced with challenges such as constant repairs and inadequate transport, among others.

Health Deputy Minister Chitalu Chilufya, Kitwe District Commissioner Elias Kamanga and Copperbelt provincial medical officer Consity Mwale were among the dignitaries that attended the function.

PRESIDENT Michael Sata yesterday paid Copperbelt Patriotic Front (PF) officials and Ndola residents a surprise visit.

Mr Sata landed at the Simon Mwansa Kapwepwe International Airport aboard a Zambia Air Force plane at 10:59 hours and was greeted on arrival by Local Government and Housing Minister Emmanuel Chenda, Copperbelt Minister Mwenya Musenge, Chiefs and Traditional Affairs Deputy Minister Susan Kawandami, Copperbelt Permanent Secretary Howard Sikwela, senior Government officials and PF members.

The President then proceeded to the presidential guest house on Kabelenga Avenue where he held closed door meetings with Government officials and senior Copperbelt PF officials.

Copperbelt PF chairperson Stardy Mwale said in an interview later that President Sata appealed for unity in the party as the tool to win the 2016 general elections.

“The President has sent a message to all PF members on the Copperbelt to be united despite the recent happenings and to work closely with the new General Secretary so as to win the next elections,” Mr Mwale said.

He said President Sata appealed for order, discipline and loyalty.

Mr Mwale said in turn, the PF Copperbelt top leadership assured the President of total loyalty and support.

He said he would not hesitate to discipline anyone who would defy the orders of the President here on.
Meanwhile PF General Secretary Edgar Lungu said at the airport that scooping three out of five by-elections held on Thursday was an indication that the party was on course for an overwhelming victory in 2016.

Mr Lungu said the party grabbed three more seats on Thursday from the opposition which was clear that PF was on a good course.

“People have been saying the party is disintegrating but these election results show that we are strong.
“Come September 19, we will have four new seats out of six that we have taken within one month,” he said.

Mr Lungu said the fact that it was four women out of five that won elections on Thursday showed that women had an important role to play in elections.

He said he was grateful to the electorate for conducting generally peaceful elections, saying that was how things should be.

Mr Lungu left for Lusaka with President Sata and the First Lady Christine Kaseba who had accompanied the President at the presidential guest house in the afternoon.

They left at 17:39 hours after greeting PF members and Government officials.
