Chief Singani of the Tonga people of Choma district has banned traditional witchdoctors from operating in his chiefdom.

The chief says he has taken the decision because the witchdoctors are causing unnecessary instability in the chiefdom.

In an interview with ZANIS in Choma yesterday, chief Singani said witchdoctors have been wreaking havoc in his chiefdom by ‘stealing’ people ‘s money in exchange for fake medicinal solutions.

He said it is sad that this is happening at the time the government is striving hard to improve health delivery in rural areas.

Chief Singani regretted that people have continued believing in the power of traditional healing practices despite efforts by government and its cooperating partners in ensuring that quality health care is accessed by everyone regardless of the place they live.

“As a chief I am banning witchdoctors in my chiefdom because it makes you avoid seeking medical attention from established health facilities such as clinics,” he said.

He also called on spiritual prophets to desist from discouraging people from taking Antiretroviral drugs (ARVs) after praying for them.

Chief Singani observed that if this vice is not addressed, the number of people on treatment will drastically reduced, thereby defeating government’s efforts towards universal access to treatment and care for HIV and AIDS.

He has called upon his subjects to take advantage of health facilities closer to them and seek medical health as opposed to suffering loss of property and money to witchdoctors.

The traditional leader also encouraged people of Simukanka area where the Glasco Foundation has improved health facilities to use family planning services to promote child-spacing and avoid unwanted pregnancies.

He called on Glasco Foundation to build more health centres in his chiefdom to improve health care for his subjects.

Newly elected Movement for Multiparty Democracy (MMD) president,Nevers Mumba has clarified his political slogan of ‘Don’t Kutina’ as not provocative and confrontational towards the Patriotic Front (PF)government.Dr. Mumba explained that he came up with the slogan to strengthen and encourage MMD members to be strong following what he alleged as political retribution by PF members towards MMD members after losing power.

The MMD president was speaking on a live Zambia National Broadcasting Corporation (ZNBC) Radio two phone-In-programme monitored by ZANIS in Lusaka. He said the ‘Don’t Kutina’ slogan that some sections of society feel was confrontational was Biblical and was calculated to inspire Zambians including intellectuals that he claimed were cowed into silence following the ascendance of the PF to power.

And Dr. Mumba has maintained that his stance on the plight of the poor and other downtrodden Zambians has not changed since the time he joined politics.

Dr. Mumba was responding to a caller who wanted to know why he has always been inconsistent in politics and his championing of elitist policies. But Dr. Mumba said he has always been an ardent advocate of the poor people by championing of pro poor policies during the time he served in government.

He further said it was for this reason that at one time he became the first ever serving Republican vice president to be conferred with an award for championing the cause of the disadvantaged people in society.

During his inauguration as the fourth MMD president last week, Dr.Mumba, declared a punch for punch politics with President Michael Sata and his administration. He emerged victorious after defeating his closest rival, former Commerce Minister and leader of opposition in Parliament, Felix Mutati to replace Rupiah Banda who resigned from active politics.Others that contested the party presidency are Kabinga Pande, Dr.Situmbeko Musokotwane, Enock Kavindele, Moses Muteteka and Kapembwa Simbao.

Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) Commissioner Joseph Jalasi says 74 by-elections have arisen out of last year’s September 20th general
elections.

Mr Jalasi said the by-elections are at a huge cost to government and petitioners. He said by-elections were an expensive exercise which had to be
avoided at all costs despite democracy being a costly undertaking. He said this in Livingstone during a pre-election briefing for political party representatives at the Civic Centre.

Mr. Jalasi further said Zambia had made a mark in the region as a haven of peace after a successful handover of power from former President Rupiah Banda to incumbent President Michael Sata.

He said Zambia would soon host an international team to share its experiences on holding peaceful and fair elections.Meanwhile, Mr. Jalasi advised political party representatives to desist from using the media to air their grievances as this had in the past contributed to destroying people’s political careers.

He urged them to consult ECZ and its representatives at district level for minor challenges instead of rushing to the media to seek relief.Mr. Jalasi maintained that ECZ was independent and called on political parties to hold peaceful nominations of candidates and to adopt responsible people that could handle the responsibilities that came with conducting civic duties at both parliamentary and local government levels.
