The opposition Movement for Multiparty Democracy (MMD) has joined in condemning the brutality of the police on the UPND cadres.

MMD Treasurer Mwansa Mbulakulima says the behavior exhibited by Lusaka province commissioner of police Charity Katanga only shows that she has turned herself into a PF cadre.

Mr. Mbulakulima has warned Ms. Katanga to be careful with how she conducts herself during operations stating that she might be currently pleasing her masters and making a name for herself but risks making history by being the first Zambian to stand before the International Criminal Court (ICC).

Speaking at a media briefing this morning, Mr. Mbulakulima says Ms Katanga, as a woman, should have been more systematic in handling the UPND youths who were trying to protest.

He says Ms Katanga, being a professional she is known to be, must have used the professional methods of crowd control instead of declaring war on the youths who are Zambian citizens.

Mr. Mbulakulima has since challenged the Lusaka province police commissioner to clearly state what she meant when she stated that what happened yesterday was just the beginning of things to come.

Meanwhile, MMD National Secretary Richard Kachingwe says people sowing the seed of division in the party are wasting their time.

Major Kachingwe says no top member of the party is intending to leave the party, contrary to some media reports.

He says reports that the party’s national executive committee is intending to expel its NEC member Felix Mutati, are misplaced.

Major Kachingwe adds that Mr. Mutati still remains the leader of the opposition in parliament.

And Major Kachingwe has announced that the party has given a general amnesty to all members who were either expelled or willingly left the party.

He has also appealed to silent members of the party such as former district commissioners and former ambassadors who had their contracts terminate with the coming of the PF into government to re-join the party.

The United Party for National Development (UPND) is considering complaining to the United Nations on what they term as human rights abuses by the Patriotic Front government.

UPND presidential advisor Douglas Siakalima says it is a pity that the Zambia Police failed to respect individual human rights of the UPND youths when they broke-up the demonstration yesterday.

Mr. Siakalima has wondered why the Lusaka province Police commissioner Charity Katanga has declared war on the UPND.

He has accused the Lusaka province police chief of being compromised as portrayed by her behavior.

He has told a media briefing today that the conduct of the Police commissioner herself amounts to police brutality.

Mr. Siakalima says the UPND will soon engage the UN in order to address the purported deteriorating human rights record in Zambia.

And The Media Institute of Southern Africa (MISA-Zambia) has observed that the continued harassment of journalists by police is an attack on the free flow of information.

MISA Zambia Chairperson Daniel Sikazwe further states that an attack on the free flow of information becomes a direct attack on democracy.

Commenting on the beating by Police of QFM’s Alexander Musokotwane during the UPND demonstration yesterday, Mr. Sikazwe says it is a clear indication that the police ignored the journalist’s identity despite being told that he was merely doing his job.

Mr. Sikazwe says it is unfortunate that journalists end up being attacked whilst carrying out their duties.

He notes that MISA will soon engage the police to understand what exactly transpired and also to find ways of ensuring that such occurrences are not repeated in the future.

Government warns pupils against protests

7

Government has warned of stern action against pupils and students engaging in riotous behaviours saying the consequences of rioting have far reaching implications on future learners.

The country has recorded about seven riots in the periods between March and June this year, the latest being at Samfya Secondary School in Luapula province which happened last evening.

Ministry of Education, Science, Vocation Training and Early Education Permanent Secretary Miriam Chinyama said the Ministry will not Condon the acts of lawlessness amongst pupils and warned that stern action will be meted on those that will be found guilty of the offence.

Mr. Chinyama stated that the riotous behaviours by pupils and students is clearly in breach of Section 76 of the penal code, Cap 87 of the Laws of Zambia which states that any person who takes part in a riot is guilty of a misdemeanour and is liable to imprisonment for seven years.

She reiterated that the Ministry will not deal with cases of riotous behaviour administratively as always but will from now on treat them like any other criminal offence as the repair and maintenance of school property are at great cost to government and their families who are made to pay for damages caused.

The Permanent Secretary has since implored parents and other concerned stakeholders to counsel and educate their pupils about their rights and responsibilities and directed school administrators to put in place mechanisms that will facilitate effective communication between the school administration and pupils.

Mr. Chibuluma says Ms. Katanga should not be emotional when doing her job but should sober up and follow the law.

He notes that the police should always be aware of the fact that there is a constitution governing the country and that human rights must always be respected.

Kenneth Konga making remarkable progess

University Teaching Hospital (UTH) Managing Director Lackson Kasonka has said that he is elated at the remarkable progress former Energy and Water Development Minister Kenneth Konga who is admitted to the institution is making.

Dr Kasonka said Mr Konga was making impressive recovery and was responding “exceptionally well” to treatment.

He said Mr Konga’s blood pressure was brought to manageable levels and that he was undergoing physiotherapy treatment to address the numbness on his limbs, explaining that limbs often became numb when the blood pressure overtook one’s body.

He, however, said he was not in a position to state when the former Minister was likely to be discharged.

Mr Konga collapsed last week on Wednesday during interrogations with the joint investigative wings of Government. He was initially admitted to St John’s Medical Hospital before being transferred to UTH where he has been since.

The law enforcement agencies, early this year, seized the MMD Chavuma West parliamentarian’s luxurious Hummer motor vehicle which he said he acquired using money that Members of Parliament (MPs) got from National Assembly as car loans.

Mr Konga was also warned and cautioned over a multi-billion Kwacha Hotel situated near Kamwala, a semi-detached flat in Kabulonga and mining equipment in Makeni, property that has all been given back to him.

Robiana Muteka has incurable cancer

39
FILE: President Sata visits Robiana Muteka at the University Teaching hospital

University Teaching Hospital (UTH) Managing Director Lackson Kasonka has disclosed that the recent operation which resulted in the removal of a 14.5 kg tumour from the back of 24-year-old Robiana Muteka has not cured his problem.

Dr Kasonka said Robiana had been kept at UTH even after removal of the tumour because doctors wanted to monitor him as his case was peculiar and special and that the tumour was unpredictable.

He said Robiana had been undergoing weekly repeated blood tests and X-ray scans, among other tests and that the findings were that the tumour, which he described as neurofibromatosis, had continued to grow.

“It has migrated into the lungs. There is a growth of the same tumour in the lungs. What started as a non-cancerous tumour is rather cancerous,” he said.

He said one of Robiana’s lungs had literally been covered by the tumour thus rendering it “virtually useless” and that if he had to be operated on, the affected lung had to be removed.

Dr Kasonka said there were a number of things that needed to be considered before the 24-year-old Livingstone based Robiana could undergo another operation.

He said given the unpredictable nature of his disease, a similar thing would have occurred at any other health institution after the initial operation.

He said by and large, Robiana had been complaining of body pains.

Robiana was evacuated to the UTH in March this year from Livingstone following President Michael Sata’s directive to enable the youth access specialist treatment.

And Government has evacuated 24 year old Florence Mampa whose breasts have grown out of proportion from Samfya to Lusaka where she will undergo a series of tests at the University Teaching Hospital (UTH).

Community Development, Mother and Child Health Deputy Minister Jean Kapata who this morning flew to Samfya to get the patient and her mother said the patient will straightaway be admitted to UTH where doctors will start assessing her condition.

ZANIS reports that Ms. Kapata told journalists upon arrival from Samfya at Kenneth Kaunda International Airport that UTH Managing Director Dr. Lackson Kasonka has already organized a team of medical experts who will attend to the patient.

The Deputy Minister thanked Meanwood Investments Proprietor Robinson Zulu for chartering a plane to evacuate the patient from Samfya to Lusaka.

She urged the corporate world to partner with the Ministry of Community Development in helping people that are afflicted with different diseases especially in rural areas.

Ms. Kapata expressed optimism that Ms. Mampa’s case will be a success story just like that of Robiana Muteka where doctors at UTH managed to remove a 14.7 Kg tumor from his back.

And mother of the patient, Vivian Mampa thanked Government for the support and assistance it has given to her daughter in a bid to find a solution for her predicament.

Mrs. Mampa said with the care that Government is showing on the health and general wellbeing of its citizens, few people will be dying even from complicated cases.
