Zambia is ready to lift the Africa cup

38

Tonight is the night many Zambians have dreamed of, Zambia is in the finals of the Africa cup of nations. It has been a long road but we are finally here . Ivory coast are worthy opponents ,beating them will prove that Zambia is a major power house in African Football.

This will be an epic Africa Cup of Nations showdown, fans should expect a defensive battle. With both teams fighting for the pride of their nations, there is much more on the line in this tournament than just a trophy.

With our determination, we are scared of nobody but we have lots of respect for Ivory Coast. We know the quality of the players and what they are capable of. We are in front of a mountain but we’ve got so much determination that we are not afraid of reaching the summit.” says coach Herve Renard

It is a big surprise to come to Libreville as a finalist. Nobody gave us a chance to make the final, but fate has been good to us. The fallen heroes dreamed about the final. We are now dreaming to bring glory to our country,”  “I hope we can finish it the way we have been playing it in previous matches. It will be important for us. I hope the players will rise to the occasion.”said kalusha Bwalya

The players are also confident in their ability;

“If we want to be at the summit we need to defeat the giants. The Ivory Coast are on top, they are favourites, but I think this is our moment.” “The young players learned something against Ghana, not to fear big names. It’s just 11 players against 11 out on the pitch, they’ve picked that up from the Black Stars victory.” said Christopher Katongo

“Drogba, no, I don’t feel any more pressure. The coach Herve Renard has helped us to keep cool, whether it’s a big or small game. “He’s done a lot with us mentally, I’m not shaking about Drogba, it’s just one of those games. There’s no panic.” said Kennedy Mweene

INSPECTOR-GENERAL of Police Martin Malama has issued a stern warning that police will not tolerate unruly behaviour and general disregard of traffic regulations from overzealous motorists before and after the Africa Cup of Nations final between Zambia and Ivory coast tonight.

Malama said at a media briefing in Lusaka yesterday that police officers have been put on alert to deal with erring motorists or persons whose behaviour on the road will endanger other people’s lives.

“Let’s remain calm during and after the game. Let celebrations be conducted within the confines of the governing laws of the nation. As a police, we will not condone any exhibition of unruly behaviour from anyone,” Malama said.

He said it was regrettable that the last two games which Zambia played and emerged victorious had resulted in the loss of lives, which he noted could have been avoided had motorists adhered to traffic regulations.

Malama said from January 21, about 510 accidents had been recorded countrywide.

“During this period when Zambia played at the Africa Cup, 36 fatal accidents were recorded, 46 lives were lost and 60 serious injuries. Then 89 people were seriously injured while 105 were involved slight accidents. Some 110 people were slightly injured and 284 reported damages to property,” he said.

Malama, who urged soccer fans to celebrate responsibly, said victory of the Zambia national team called for jubilation and not sorrow.

Chipolopolo_victoryAnd Minister of Home Affairs Minister Kennedy Sakeni has advised soccer fans to celebrate peacefully and in an orderly manner as Zambians prepare to watch the final.
The Road Transport and Safety Agency (RTSA) in partnership with Zambia Police have also intensified patrols over the weekend starting yesterday.

According to a statement issued yesterday by Home Affairs spokesperson Moses Siwali, Sakeni said he is saddened by the loss of lives after every game.

“I implore all football-loving Zambians to celebrate peacefully and in an orderly manner on Sunday (today) when the Chipolopolo face Ivory Coast to avoid the loss of more lives as it has been the case,” he said.

Sakeni said there is no need for Zambians to leave their homes and flock into the streets blocking the flow of traffic.

He also said that not only lives are lost but criminals take advantage of the situation to rob innocent celebrating members of the public.

He appealed to Zambians to desist from excessive drinking, especially after Zambia’s victory.

And RTSA principal publicity officer Mercy Mwila said in a statement that while the agency joins the rest of the country in celebrating and wishing the Chipolopolo a victorious outcome today, RTSA remains committed to ensuring that sanity on roads prevails.

“We are concerned that many motorists and pedestrians alike are involving themselves in risky and unsafe road behaviour as expressions of joy. And the agency would like to caution members of the public that this kind of over-excitement can impair one’s judgement and can expose them to risks leading to the loss of life or serious injury,” Mwila said.

And police officers will this evening be deployed in various locations in Central Province to maintain law and order.

Central Province police commissioner Solomon Jere said in an interview in Kabwe yesterday that police will be alert in Kabwe, Mumbwa, Kapiri Mposhi, Mkushi and Serenje to ensure that the celebrations will be peaceful and incident-free.

Jere urged soccer fans who wish to throng the streets in their respective districts to be cautious and safeguard against the loss of life.

“We are deploying police officers who will be alert. This is a special operation which will cover Kabwe, Mumbwa, Kapiri Mposhi Mkushi and Serenje. In Kabwe, we shall have more officers so that we don’t have any death in the soccer frenzy which we are likely to have after Zambia beat Ivory Coast,” Dr Jere said.

And police on the Copperbelt say they will intensify patrols following this evening final.

Copperbelt police commissioner Mary Tembo has also appealed to the public to celebrate within their residential areas as opposed to trooping into town.
“We are going to intensify our patrols to protect lives of the people and property,” she said.

Ms Tembo said business should go on without any obstruction as some people will be working.

“At the hospitals, people will be working and patients being rushed to health institutions should not be obstructed by overzealous soccer fans,” she said.

She said motorists should not ignore the road regulations by honking uncontrollably as that causes noise pollution.

The police commissioner also called on bar-owners to ensure that they also help in maintaining peace.

Superstar Singer Whitney Houston dies at 48

35

Whitney Houston, the pop singer, has died on the eve of the Grammy awards.

Houston, 48, had a history of drug problems. She died at the Beverly Hilton hotel where she was staying as a guest.

Houston was one of the most celebrated female singers of all time, with hits including I Will Always Love You and Saving All My Love For You.

But her later career was overshadowed by substance abuse and her turbulent marriage to singer Bobby Brown.

Police spokesman Mark Rosen told reporters Houston was pronounced dead at 15:55 pm (23:55 GMT) in her room on the fourth floor of the Beverly Hilton Hotel.

Fire department personnel and members of hotel security were attempting to resuscitate her when police arrived at the scene, he said, but their efforts were unsuccessful.

“She has been positively identified by friends and family that were with her at the hotel, and next of kin have already been notified,” he added.

The cause of her death remains unclear but Mr Rosen said there were “no obvious signs of criminal intent”.

Houston’s background was steeped in soul and gospel music.

Her mother was gospel singer Cissy Houston, she was cousin to singer Dionne Warwick and goddaughter to Aretha Franklin.

“I just can’t talk about it now,” Ms Franklin said in a short statement. “It’s so stunning and unbelievable. I couldn’t believe what I was reading coming across the TV screen.”

Having grown up in New Jersey, Houston began singing in church and then in the night clubs of New York, and was a model before being signed by Arista Records.

At the height of her career in the 1980s and 90s she won many awards and enjoyed several number one singles and albums. In her career, Houston sold over 170 million albums and singles worldwide, with many hit singles. Her lead single, “I Will Always Love You,” became the best-selling album by a female artist in music history.

Artists from Mariah Carey to Christina Aguilera have tried to emulate her bravura performances, but none of them were as good as the original, music critic Paul Gambaccini told the BBC.

Houston also enjoyed success acting in blockbuster films such as The Bodyguard and Waiting to Exhale.

In recent years drug use took its toll on the star and her voice – once acknowledged as one of the finest in pop music – was badly damaged.

“She did have it all, but the record is there of the decline into drug use and the damage done from drug use,” said Gambaccini.

Her marriage to Brown, with whom she had a daughter, Bobbi Kristina, ended in divorce in 2007. The marriage had been a tempestuous one, with allegations of domestic abuse.

“The biggest devil is me. I’m either my best friend or my worst enemy,” Houston told ABC’s Diane Sawyer in a 2002 interview.

Correspondents say Houston’s death will undoubtedly overshadow the music industry’s Grammy Awards, due to be held in Los Angeles on Sunday.

She had been expected to attend the ceremony and her close friend and long-time mentor Clive Davis had recently hinted she might perform.

“It’s her favourite night of the year … who knows by the end of the evening,” he had told AP.

Southern Province Chiefs vow to oppose re-alignment of Chirundu, Itezhi-tezhi districts

123
FILE: Chief Mukuni of Southern province going a make a speech at the International Institute for Peace through tourism in Lusaka at the weekend

Chiefs of Southern province meeting in Choma have vowed to oppose Government’s decision to transfer the administration of Chirundu and Itezhi Tezhi districts to Lusaka and central provinces respectively.

The Chiefs have also challenged Home affairs minister Kennedy Sakeni to arrest them for resisting the Presidential decree to re-align the two districts.

This is according to the resolutions of a one day meeting of southern province chiefs held at Kozo lodge in Choma yesterday whose meeting was convened specifically to discuss the Presidential pronouncement to transfer the two Districts.

Reading out the resolutions on behalf of others, chiefs Chikanta and Mukuni said chiefs in the region would not accept any piece of land currently under the southern province jurisdiction to be transferred to any another province whether for administrative, economic or any other reason.

They said chiefs found it illogical that Itezhi Tezhi district should be administered from Kabwe which was over 600 kilometres when Choma which was the new provincial headquarters for southern province was only 200 kilometres away.

They said the chief were perturbed by the President’s unilateral decision which they said was done without consultation with Chiefs and other stakeholders who would be directly affected by such a move.

They said they were ready to be arrested by Home Affairs minister for resisting the re-alignment of the two districts.

And chief Mukuni said what President Sata had done was contradictory to the chiefs’s proposals submitted to the previous MMD government in 2009 regarding the splitting of southern province into two.

He said Chiefs had asked government to split southern province into two with one province to comprise districts of Choma, Itehzi-Tezhi, Mazabuka, Monze, Namwala and Choma would have been the provincial headquarters.

Meanwhile FDD Munali parliamentary candidate Edmond Lifwekelo said people should not oppose the President’s decision as it has been done in good faith.

Speaking in an exclusive interview with Qfm, Mr. Lifwekelo says if decentralization and devolution of power are to be implements creating more districts are inevitable.

He says it therefore important for those opposing the President to understand the grounds of President Sata’s move to re-align the two districts.

Pande welcomes Sata’s clarification on Solwezi

Opposition MMD Kasempa Member of Parliament Kabinga Pande has welcomed President Michael Sata’s clarification that Solwezi district will not be realigned to the Copperbelt Province. Mr. Pande says losing Solwezi from the North Western Province was going to strain the province’s little resources.

He has also added that President Sata must go ahead and establish four or five more districts in the North western province. And speaking as MMD Deputy National Chairman, Mr. Pande has expressed hope that his party will scoop this week’s Msanzala by-election in the eastern Province.

Last week President Sata stated that he would soon create three more districts in North-western province and six other districts in Western province. Mr Sata expressed shock at opposition United Party for National Development (UPND) leader Hakainde Hichilema who he said was peddling lies on governance and administration of Government.

Mr. Sata accused Mr. Hichilema of allegedly using chiefs to peddle lies that Government would remove Solwezi, the provincial capital of North-western province and take it to the Copperbelt Province.

He said that the UPND did not understand the administrative processes and governance system of the country. The President also took a swipe at newly installed Lozi Prime Minister (Ngambela) Clement Sinyinda for equally allegedly claiming that Government would remove Kaoma, Sesheke and Senanga from Western province.

“I spent 10 years in the opposition and l’m shocked by the utterances of president Hichilema,” President Sata said.

President Sata reiterated that the creation of new districts was to effectively manage the country in a cost effective manner.

Dr Phiri said 1,425 internal candidates failed the examinations of which 851 were boys and 574 were girls.

He said out of the 90,031 candidates who entered for examinations, 2,103 candidates were absent from the examinations.

He said individual statements can be obtained from schools and centres where candidates sat for examinations.

Now AG writes to foreign countries over Henry Banda

20
Attoney General Mumba Malila

THE Office of the Attorney General has written to countries where former President Rupiah Banda’s son, Henry, could possibly be hiding to help the Zambia Police bring him back home.

Police have already issued an international arrest warrant for Henry, who has failed to appear before a combined team of State investigators after they summoned him.

Attorney General Mumba Malila said in an interview in Lusaka on Thursday that his office has sent letters to a number of countries within and outside the Southern African region to help the police bring Henry back home.

“My office has written to a number of countries within and outside the Southern African region to help the Zambia Police Service bring back home the former President’s son, Henry, who is wanted by the police.

“The letters were sent last week and we are just waiting for official response from these countries,” Mr Malila said.

He, however, could not state the charges the police are likely to slap on Henry who has failed to avail himself before a combined team of state investigators that summoned him a couple of months ago.

Henry is said to have fled to Kenya following allegations of corrupt activities levelled against him.

The Interpol office in France, Lyon, is said to have published the red notice to all the 190 Interpol member countries and also posted it on their website.

This is the signal for all affiliate police forces to enforce the international arrest warrant issued against Henry recently.

Henry has previously been named in connection with a multi-billion dollar deal for the sale of assets belonging to Zamtel to Libya’s LAP Green Networks.

He is also wanted in connection with what police say are serious cases that could have been committed when his father was in power.

His name and that of former Minister of Communications and Transport Dora Siliya have been linked to a Cayman Islands-registered company that was paid up to US$12.6 million to evaluate the repossessed Zamtel assets.

The value of the assets is alleged to have been reduced to less than US$20 million when the real market value was much higher.

The Sebastian Zulu commission of inquiry recently stated that the assets of Zamtel were not evaluated countrywide and that the sale was only based on the value of assets in Lusaka.

He’ll Get You Back on Track

TODAY’S SCRIPTURE
“Show me Your ways, O LORD; teach me Your paths”
(Psalm 25:4, NKJV)

TODAY’S WORD from Joel and Victoria
Like most cars today, I have a navigation system. I can program it to take me to a certain location. All along the way, the announcer will give me instructions, “Turn left in a quarter of a mile. Take this freeway three miles. Exit in one mile.” But sometimes I don’t follow the directions. I may miss a turn, stop to get gas or go another way. The announcer doesn’t come on and start yelling at me and say, “What in the world are you doing? I told you to turn left! You ruined my plan.” No, the moment I get off course that GPS system immediately starts recalculating another plan. Within a few seconds, it will give me new directions.

It’s the same way with God. When you have a heart to please Him, you may miss an exit, you may make a wrong turn, but God has already recalculated another route. He’s still going to get you to where you’re supposed to be. He loves you with an everlasting love, and when you seek Him with your whole heart, no matter where you are in life, He’ll get you back on track!

A PRAYER FOR TODAY
Father God, show me Your path, teach me Your ways. My heart’s deepest desire is to know You and to be known by You. You are my King, and I humbly submit my ways to You. Thank You for Your goodness and faithfulness in my life in Jesus’ name. Amen.

NAREP tells govt to find good legal advisers

32
National Restoration Party leader Elias Chipimo jr

The National Restoration Party (NAREP) has advised the government to be engaging in broader consultation with the stakeholders before making any policy decisions.

NAREP president Elias Chipimo says that there is need for the PF government to explain the rationale behind the creation of districts and also indicate to the Zambians the cost implications.

Mr. Chipimo notes that creation of the new districts is most likely to create temporary jobs that will come with the construction of infrastructure among others adding that government needs to come up with decisions that will have long term positive effects on the lives of the Zambians.

The opposition leader has also asked government to make public the costs involved in the reversal of the Zamtel sale to lapgreen of Libya.

He says that even if the government has a right to repossess assets that may seem to be of national interest, it is important for it to understand the consequences of such actions.

Mr. Chipimo has further advised president Sata to engage high calibre legal advisors to avoid lapses  in the operations of government.

He observes that government cannot rely on the attorney general alone as he is occupied with so many things in his line of duty.

Mr. Chipimo was speaking to journalists in Lusaka today.

And Mr. Chipimo has noted that there is no harm with the chipolopolo boys doing the “don’t kubeba”style when celebrating the scores on the pitch.

Mr. Chipimo says the copper bullet boys should be allowed to celebrate in the manner in which they feel like adding that soccer is not about politics but a unifying factor that should be used  bring people together.

He has since wished the chipolopolo boys the very best into tomorrow’s final encounter with Ivory Coast.

Choma finds land for provincial capital

LAND has been identified in Choma where infrastructure for the provincial capital of Southern Province will be constructed.

The piece of land, about five kilometres from the central business district on the Livingstone-Lusaka road, is expected to accommodate 200 offices.

Last year, the Patriotic Front (PF) Government relocated the Southern province capital from Livingstone to Choma and allocated K15 billion for infrastructure development.

Southern province Minister Miles Sampa said in Livingstone yesterday in an interview that the provincial administration was currently discussing the matter with the Ministry of Transport, Works, Supply and Communication.

“We don’t want to build offices in the central business district of Choma because the area is already congested.

We want to move slightly away from town so that Choma becomes a large town. We’ll have all Government ministries at the identified site,” Mr Sampa said.

He said the next step would be to advertise the project in the press so that contractors could bid.

The minister has pledged to ensure the construction of infrastructure at the new provincial capital was completed within 12 months to beat the deadline of two and half years which was recently announced by President Michael Sata.

“I wish to warn bogus contractors who will be coming to Choma to try and engage in the construction of the provincial capital of Southern Province that the Government will not tolerate such people.

“We will soon advertise for the construction of the provincial capital and we want professionals to come here to do the work,” he said.

Mr Sampa said he would be the first one to report bogus contractors to law enforcement agencies such as the Zambia Police, Anti -Corruption Commission (ACC) and Drug Enforcement Commission.

Former Zambian President Rupiah Bwezani Banda has joined the high-powered Zambian delegation sent by President Michael Sata to Gabon to give support to the Zambia National Soccer team. Mr Banda will be part of the Zambian delegation to Libreville, Gabon to attend the closing ceremony and watch the final match between Zambia and Ivory Coast.

This was after President Sata requested the former head of state, who is an ardent soccer fan to join First Republican president Dr Kenneth David Kaunda, Republican Vice-President Dr Guy Scott and other Zambian dignitaries who are traveling to Gabon to give solidarity and support to the Chipolopolo Boys as they play their final match tomorrow.

And in a press statement made available to the media by State house, President Michael Sata has sent a goodwill and solidarity message to the gallant Chipolopolo Boys, ahead of tomorrow’s Africa Cup of Nations (AfCON) final match in Libreville, Gabon.

In yet another passionate call to the Zambia National Soccer Team, the President said the entire nation is proud of the excellent successes the team has recorded during this period.

“No doubt, Zambia has become one of the continent’s leading team in football following a convincing and outstanding performance of our heroic Chipolopolo Boys at the 2012 Orange Africa Cup of Nations tournament,” President Sata said.

The President wished the team every success in the final and counseled them to remain resolute and optimistic especially with the unwavering support they are enjoying from both the Government and the Zambian people in general.

“We are confident that the Chipolopolo Boys will emerge victorious and subsequently return with the trophy to Zambia after many years of attempts to clinch gold at this prestigious African tournament,” the Head of State said.

“We wish our brave and gifted ambassadors the very best of luck and urge them to make Zambia proud once more. Let them know that after this final match, they shall forever remain winners and true representatives of our motherland.”

Investrust Bank PLC opens account for chipolopolo boys

21

Investrust Bank PLC has opened a ‘Goodwill’ bank account for the Zambia National Soccer Team dubbed ‘well played Chipolopolo’ in which soccer fans can deposit their contributions to acknowledge the team’s success at the ongoing AFCON.

Investrust Bank Public Relations Manager Ackim Mwale says the bank management was encouraged to provide a conduit to raise money for the team following Chipolopolo boys’ impressive semi final performance against tournament favourites Ghana.

Mwale says the money deposited in the said account will be given to the team when it comes back. He says those wishing to donate to the Chipolopolo boys can deposit in the ‘Well played Chipolopolo’ account number 11-07010145077-013 at any Investrust bank branch.

Mwale says the bank will go a step further by finding a way of encouraging high-level recognition of the players’ individual performance through collaboration with various corporate companies and personal customers.
