Changing our Political Mindset

43
What does the future hold for these children?

By Gray Soko

Reading many of the comments on political issues lately one gets the impression there is a lot of negativity leaving one to wonder whether there is any politician around, Zambia can really be proud of. Iam not suggesting that saying positive things will necessarily change the negative aspects in our politics to positive but it can surely change our response to those negative situations.

I like the definition in the American Heritage Dictionary of the English Language of mindset as “a fixed mental attitude or disposition that predetermines a person’s responses to and interpretation of situations”.

I have an issue with the type of party leadership which presumes that the party leader is “supreme” and basically owns the party as if it was his personal business. The success of the leader is having a successor, in having his vision carried forward. There should be no such thing as the leader has to “finish” his programmes. You cannot have an end date to development, no country has ever “arrived” at its optimum development. The leader should have a vision but its execution is a team effort. In the Bible Aaron and Hur held high Moses’ hands for victory over the Amelikites for they observed that as long as Moses held his hands up Israel prevailed but when he let his hands down the Amelikites prevailed. A true example of team or collective effort.

One of our problems is that the leader thinks he is solely responsible for the success of the vision. That is why when a person has a bright idea he wants to be the party leader and therefore forms his own party. Of course there also leaders who look upon other ideas as a challenge to their authority and therefore maneuver to have persons having challenging or more progressive ideas removed. We basically share a common vision for Zambia but it is in the process of achieving this that there is a problem.[pullquote]The success of the leader is having a successor[/pullquote]

Assume for a moment we had one party with the self-discipline, projection of confidence and trustworthiness of General Miyanda, the entrepreneurship of HH, the intellectual and analytical mind of Dr Fred Mutesa, the youthful zeal of Chipimo Jnr and the passion for transparency and integrity of Milupi, wouldn’t we be having positive things to say about Zambian politics? The proliferation of political parties is more than an expression of freedom of association, it is a failure of collective political leadership.

Another problem is the stereotyping of politicians. Negative or presumed negative past events are replayed and once in a while leaders who may have had privileged intel threaten to “expose” the dossiers that came to their knowledge in order to gain political mileage. Instead of magnifying weaknesses we should be building on the individual’s strengths. The prominent persons in the Bible were not perfect. Moses was a murderer and fugitive, David was an adulterer, Abraham lied about his wife that she was his sister, Jacob was a trickster, Rahab was a prostitute etc but this did not prevent them from becoming great. We should not be too quick to write off potential leaders because we shall not have a perfect person.

What a choice we have to make on 20 September!

UPND president Hakainde Hichilema (L)

Mr. Hichilema said on the radio that the current CDF funds are insufficient to bring about meaningful development in the country.

Police in running battles with PF cadres over ECZ ballot boxes in Nakonde

156

Police in Nakonde yesterday morning fought running battles with suspected Patriotic Front ( PF ) cadres outside Nakonde Police station over a truck registration number TZ 762 AMR and Trailer Number P592 AXR that they suspected to be carrying marked ballot papers to Lusaka.

The irate Pf cadres who escorted the truck to the police station fought running battles with the Police for over 30 minutes until the container was unloaded and the goods inside inspected.

However, contrary to the cadres suspicions, the vehicle only contained marked red and white tapes and cell ( or adhesive ) tapes to be used at poling stations in September, tripartite elections.

District Commissioner for Nakonde Billy Silwimba, who was physically present at the police station, together with Zambia Revenue Authority (ZRA ) Senior collections of customs Stephen Mwansa, condemned the behavior of the PF cadres.

Mr. Silwimba said it is wrong for the PF cadres to alarm the nation on mere speculations that can plunge the nation into chaos if not well handled.

He said nothing was destroyed during the confusion and has since appealed to concerned parties to ensnure that such matters are handled with care next time.

The District Commissioner warned that people issuing alarming remarks and giving false information to the public risked being arrested and prosecuted once found wanting.

He further called on the District Conflict Resolution Committee to table the matter with all the participating political parties in this year’s elections in order to avoid un necessary suspicions.

Afterwards, the protesting cadres immediateltly dispersed after noticing that the container did not carry marked ballot papers as earlier rumored.

The truck has since been released and Zambia Revenue Authority Officers were being awaited to place new seals on the container before it can be allowed to leave.

Zambia goes to the polls on September 20 th and the ballot papers for Presidential Parliamentary and Local Government elections are being printed in Durban South Africa and are expected in the country on September 13, 2011.

And The Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) says it will not entertain the disruption of the delivery of its election materials.

The commission has since disclosed that the boundary tapes were the consignment of all imported election materials which were being transported into the country by road as all the materials have since been delivered.

The announcement follows the blocking of the truck in Nakonde yesterday that was carrying the consignment of polling station boundary tapes by the Patriotic Front (PF) cadres.

ZANIS reports ECZ Senior Public Relations officer Sylvia Bwalya making the announcement in a statement in Lusaka yesterday.

Ms. Bwalya further stated that the printing of Local Government ballot papers is still ongoing while the printing of ballot papers for the presidential and National assembly elections has been completed.

She stressed that the Presidential, National Assembly and Local Government ballot papers will be airlifted directly from Durban to Lusaka on Tuesday 13th September 2011.

The Seed of the Word

9

TODAY’S SCRIPTURE

“But the seed on good soil stands for those with a noble and good heart, who hear the word, retain it, and by persevering produce a crop”
(Luke 8:15, NIV)

TODAY’S WORD from Joel and Victoria

Sometimes in the natural, we don’t see how God’s promises are going to come to pass in our lives. It seems like there are so many obstacles to overcome. But we have to see God’s Word like a seed. When it’s planted in our hearts, and we water it by thinking the right thoughts and expecting good things, that little seed begins to grow into something much, much greater.

Jesus told a parable in Mark, chapter four. He said, “God’s Word is like a tiny mustard seed. When it is sown, it is less than all the other seeds, one of the smallest. But when it grows up, it becomes greater than all.” Notice it goes from being less than all to being greater than all.

Are you in an overwhelming situation today, maybe in your health, finances or relationships? Does God’s promise seem small compared to what you’re facing?

Don’t sit back and think, “Man, it’s never going to get any better. It’s never going to change.” Instead, sow the Word by speaking it every single day. Water that seed by staying in faith because the seed of the Word has supernatural power in it. It will grow and flourish, and you will see God’s promises come to pass all the days of your life!

A PRAYER FOR TODAY

Father God, today I choose to sow the Word of God! Thank You that it will not return void, but it will accomplish what it was sent forth to do! Thank You for giving every good and perfect gift to Your children. I bless Your holy name today and always. In Jesus’ Name. Amen.

South Africa U17 Play Age Card After Defeat

5

Zambia Under-17’s victory over South Africa Under-17 this afternoon was overshadowed at the end by accusations by the visitors of age cheating by their host.

Zambia beat South Africa 1-0 in the two sides friendly international played at Nkoloma Stadium in Lusaka.

South Africa coach Solly Luvhango claimed that Faz failed to provide adequate legal documentation that their players were all born after 1996.

“Am disappointed with Zambia. We agreed with Zambia that we shall use boys born in 1995-1996 now they are using boys born in 1994-1995 which is unfair and they know that. That’s why they didn’t bring passport but travel passes,” Luvhango said.

Faz however denied that they featured ineligible players but admitted that they had problems acquiring documentation for their players ahead of the friendly game.

Meanwhile on the field of play, Zambia dominated their hosts for over an hour led by the impressive winger and man of the match Ackim Mumba.

Zambia could have won the match by at least three goals had striker Kondwani Chungu not been clueless with what to do with the ball with every opportunity handed to him in front of an inviting goalmouth.

The hosts took the lead in the 31st minute through Dave Daka on the rebound after tapping-in the ball in a goalmouth scuffle after Chungu had hesitated with his earlier effort.

South Africa took the game to Zambia with the introduction of their promising midfielder Thando Maqhina of Diambas Academy in the 63rd minute who lit-up hitherto then a lethargic display from South Africa.

However, Maqhina was let down by his blunt attackers Kyle Harley and Ngcobo Siyanda.

Meanwhile, the victory was revenge for zambia five years after they lost 2-1 to South Africa in another friendly this time played at Arthur Davies in Kitwe.

Power lead on 40 points from 21 games while Red Arrows stay second on 37 points ahead of their Sunday clash against Green Buffaloes at Nkoloma Stadium in Lusaka.

However, Power’s healthy goal difference is certain to keep them on top for another week whatever the result at Nkoloma tomorrow.

A rare goal from Billy Mwanza with an 18th minute header set Zesco on their way to victory.

Kabimba challenges the UPND to state connection with MMD

Patriotic Front Secretary General Wynter Kabimba
Patriotic Front Secretary General Wynter Kabimba

The opposition Patriotic Front (PF) has challenged the United Party for National Development (UPND) to explain its connection to government for using government resources during its campaigns.

PF Secretary General Winter Kabimba says his party is in possession of irrefutable evidence that the ruling MMD and the opposition UPND are closely collaborating and campaigning in some areas against the PF.

Mr. Kabimba alleges that the UPND is now involved in the abuse of government resources through the use of government motor vehicles in its campaigns and distribution of campaign materials.

Speaking at a media briefing this morning, Mr. Kabimba charged that one of the vehicles used is registered GRZ 852 BX which he said was found collecting UPND campaign materials from a house used as the UPND campaign centre in Lusaka’s Libala stage 4A.

Mr. Kabimba says there is no way UPND President Hakainde Hichilema should be trusted with presidency when he has betrayed the people of Zambia with his corruption and greed.

And the PF secretary general has demanded the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) to clean up the voters register for 2011 by removing all registered dead voters as well as to advertise the voters register in the press so as to enable voters know their polling centers to avoid fiasco during elections.

Claims of collusion between MMD and UPND are laughable-UPND

20

THE United Party for National Development (UPND) has advised Patriotic Front (PF) leaders to accept that they have lost popularity in areas they previously claimed were their strongholds.

North-Western Province UPND youth chairperson, Victor Lumayi said yesterday that claims by PF Luapula Province chairperson Kennedy Sakeni that he was aware of the collusion between MMD and UPND were laughable.

Mr Lumayi said there was no need for MMD and UPND to team up against the Michael Sata-led party because it was not a factor in the political arena.
He said Mr Sakeni should not drag the UPND in PF’s failures which were there for all Zambians to see.

“They are now feeling the pressure because the PF has lost popularity. When you look at Lusaka and Copperbelt the party is no longer as strong as it used to be and now they are hallucinating.

“We would like to urge Mr Sakeni not to drag UPND in his politics, let them concentrate on building their lost popularity. We know the difficulties our brother Mr Sakeni is facing,” Mr Lumayi said.

He said PF had lost popularity in most parts of the country because Zambians had realised that it had nothing to offer to them. He said most of the people that supported PF in the past had now ditched the party because it had let them down.

“Now you find only frustrated politicians and people who really do not know what they want supporting the PF. All well-meaning Zambians know that the PF has nothing to offer to the Zambian people.

“They do not have a yardstick of how they want to move the country forward,” Mr Lumayi said. He advised Mr Sakeni and other PF leaders to desist from making false claims on popularity.

Mr Sakeni was quoted in yesterday’s Post newspaper as saying the MMD and UPND were working together secretly in order to defeat the PF.

Chama District records 120 anthrax cases

2

CHAMA District in Eastern Province has recorded cases of suspected anthrax in more that 120 people.

Ministry of Health spokesperson Kamoto Mbewe said in a statement yesterday that the outbreak was suspected to have been caused by an infected hippo in Luangwa River.

Dr Mbewe said all the patients recorded since Friday last week, had a history of having consumed or touched hippo meat.

He said the hippo was said to have died of anthrax around the upstream of the Luangwa River, where 62 hippos had so far died after showing signs of infection.

“Areas bordering Chama or anyone who has consumed hippo meat in the recent past may be affected,” he said.

Dr Mbewe said however that the public should not panic because the disease was treatable and that the Ministry had sufficient stocks of drugs.

He said samples had been sent to a laboratory in Lundazi and that a rapid response from the provincial office was already in Chama.

“A stakeholders meeting involving the Ministry of health, Ministry of Live stock and fisheries, a veterinary team from the University of Zambia and University Teaching Hospital laboratory team was held today,” he said.

He said an expert team had been constituted and dispatched to support the province and the affected districts.

Dr Mbewe said people who had come in contact or had eaten hippo meat in recent weeks and developed skin swellings like insect bites which later become blister or which eventually ulcerated, should quickly seek medical attention.

He said the affected areas had been cordoned off and sensitisation provided to people against eating game meat, while surveillance had been enhanced.

Father Bwalya’s sabbatical leave extended indefinitely

64
Father Frank Bwalya

THE Catholic Church has granted Father Frank Bwalya indefinite leave of absence from Priesthood to allow him to concentrate on his personal life. The diocese of Ndola has also ordered Fr Bwalya not to act or represent the Catholic Church in any way during his indefinite leave.

This is according to a memoradum dated August 29, 2011 issued by Ndola diocese Archbishop Alick Banda, addressed to Fr Bwalya and the church. Bishop Banda has also asked Fr Bwalya not to perform any priestly duties, wear priestly attire and to be away from the presbytery during his leave.

“I also ask you not to act in any way for the Catholic diocese of Ndola or the Catholic Church in general during your leave,” Bishop Banda said in a memo.
Fr Bwalya is believed to have requested the Ndola diocese for leave so that he could concentrate on his political activities. Bishop Banda said the church has consented to Fr Bwalya’s request and granted him indefinite leave of absence.

Bishop Banda advised Fr Bwalya to remain obliged and maintain his celibacy until a new way of life is determined by the competent ecclesiastical authority.
And the MMD on the Copperbelt have welcomed the indefinite leave of Fr Bwalya.

Provincial information and publicity secretary Yotam Mtayachalo said the leave is long overdue. “We welcome the indefinite leave of Fr Bwalya, who has so much hatred against President Banda and the MMD. We also urge him to reflect on his political activities during the leave so that he can repent,” Mr Mtayachalo said.

He said the activities Fr Bwalya has involved himself in are not in line with his status as a Priest. “How can a priest strangle a chicken at a public meeting? Such behaviour is unacceptable,” Mr Mtayahalo said.

A non-governmental organisation based in Ndola has also welcomed the indefinite leave of Fr Bwalya. Right Choice Support chairman Andrew Tembo said Fr Bwalya should now join politics because he will no longer pretend to be speaking for the Catholic Church.

“We want to commend the Catholic Church for the bold decision they have taken against Fr Bwalya who has clearly demonstrated that he has joined politics,” Mr Tembo said.
Meanwhile, a Ndola-based clergyman said it is wrong for any church leader to publicly declare their political alignment to any political party.

Pastor Lawrence Temfwe said Fr Bwalya’s suspension will serve as an example to other church leaders who are actively involved in partisan politics.

He advised other church leaders to speak about developmental issues without favouring any party. “Let other church leaders know that it is not good for a man of God to be involved in active politics,” Pastor Temfwe said.
