FODEP President demands Daily Mail apology for ‘malicious’ story

24

Foundation for Democratic Process (FODEP) President Dr. Alex Ng’oma has refuted a story attributed to him in today’s Zambia Daily Mail Newspapers as having described the opposition Patriotic Front as dictatorial.

Dr. Ng’oma has since written to the Zambia Daily Mail management demanding an apology and the retraction of the article in question in the next edition of the newspaper as the article contains views he did not express.

In a letter dated 7th July, 2011, addressed to the Daily mail News editor and made available to QFM, Dr. Ng’oma states that the article in question is malicious and intended to injure him and to destroy the non partisanship reputation of FODEP.

He has further threatened to commence legal proceedings against the state owned newspaper should they fail to heed to his demands.

Dr. Ng’oma has also explained that earlier today he had a phone conversation with the author of the story Caroline Kalombe who confirmed that he did not express the views contained in the article but that other people at Daily Mail distorted the story.

He has since stated that as a result of this incidence, his future interviews with the Zambia Daily Mail will strictly be in writing.

Sata’s claim to create more jobs than needed in 90 days is a fallacy-Liato

152
Labour Minister Austin Liato

Government has said that it is a fallacy to claim that a country like Zambia can resolve unemployment in 90 days.

Minister of Labour and Social Security Austin Liato said in Lusaka yesterday that the claim is far-fetched.

Mr Sata said on Hot Fm Radio that he would create employment for all Zambians to the extent that the country would have to outsource, as everyone would be employed.

“Only untruthful politicians can take advantage of the unemployed by promising them jobs in three months. Even those who do not understand economics cannot believe that this is possible.

“Mr Sata is misleading only those who have little understanding of economics and taking advantage of the vulnerable,” Mr Liato said.

Mr Liato said Zambians cannot be cheated and they are wise enough to know that Mr Sata is politicking and does not understand what he is talking about.

He said President Banda has been working hard to improve the economy and create employment.

Government has put in place various policies to ensure that the country attracts investors and opens up employment opportunities.

He said Mr Sata should tell the nation why he failed to do what he claims can be done when he was in government.

“He should first explain to the nation what has changed now before making such promises,” Mr Liato said.

He further personally directed his officers to escort the journalists out of central police premise.

Zambia Olympic official backs SA sporting facilities

6
Hazel Kennedy, Secretary-General of the National Olympic Committee of Zambia

South Africa’s sporting facilities have come in for praise from Zambia’s National Olympic Committee Secretary-General, who would like to see South Africa host the Olympic Games.
Speaking of the International Olympic Committee meeting in Durban this week, Hazel Kennedy said: We are hoping that this forum will help show that they can be in the running; perhaps not 2020, but beyond. They are in the best position to put forward a bid, and I think it would be good for us too. I am sure that a lot of African countries would want to support something like that and it indirectly does a lot for other countries.”
“South Africa did a good job on the soccer and you want to ride on the positive side of that. A lot of their facilities have been upgraded to a very high standard,” said Copperbelt-based Kennedy.

Former National Olympic Committee of Zambia (NOCZ) president Patrick Chamunda is a member of the International Olympic Committee and will be voting in Durban this week for the city to host the 2018 Winter Olympics. Miriam Moyo has since taken over from mr Chamunda as NOCZ president.
South Africa hosts the International Olympic Committee’s (IOC) 123rd Session in Durban from July 4-9, 2011.
This is the first time in the 117 years of the IOC – since the very first session in Paris, France, back in 1894 – that the event is being hosted in Africa. This comes one year after South Africa hosted one of FIFA’s most successful ever World Cups.
At least 2,500 top world sport administrators, royalty, government leaders and media are expected to descend on this coastal city for the biggest biannual meeting of leaders in global sport.

The highlight of the 2011 IOC meeting will be the announcement of the winning bid to host the 2018 Winter Olympics. The three bidding cities, Munich (Germany), Annecy (France) and PyeongChang (South Korea) are expected to bring huge bid delegations.
The choice of South Africa for the 2011 IOC session reaffirms the recognition of the country’s expertise in hosting global sporting events and its emerging economic status.
Since 1994, South Africa has hosted several major international sporting events, including the Rugby World Cup in 1995, African Cup of Nations in 1996, the Cricket World Cup in 2003, the Women’s World Cup of Golf annually between 2005 and 2008 and last year’s FIFA World Cup, the first ever hosted on African soil.

The successful hosting of the FIFA World Cup 2010 provided an opportunity for Africa to be repositioned as a destination of choice for tourism and emerging market investment.
For South Africa, the hosting of global events is seen as an opportunity to boost the economy and create jobs. The country actively pursues such opportunities and already, 200 meetings and conferences have been secured over the next five years. This is expected to boost revenue by R1.6 billion.
Miller Matola, CEO of the International Marketing Council of SA (IMC) said: “We welcome the delegates and guests to the 123 general session of the IOC. The hosting of such a great event will make a direct contribution to tourism revenue and we are confident that the experience of delegates in South Africa will turn them into brand ambassadors for the country.

“As a proud host country for the 2010 FIFA World Cup, South Africa delivered a truly memorable and world-class African tournament, as the world experienced Africa’s rich diversity and imbibed in the spirit of ‘ubuntu’; which relates to humanity’s interconnectedness.
The overwhelmingly positive international coverage of the World Cup countered Afro-pessimism and South Africa surpassed even the most optimistic expectations. The reputational boost that was generated will be felt for years to come.”

The international Olympic movement played a major role in isolating the apartheid state before 1992 and readmitted the country to international participation two years before the formal transition to the democratic state in 1994
“Given the divisions of the past, sport remains an important vehicle through which to unite South Africans and develop communities,” Matola said. “Having the IOC in the country is also an affirmation that the government supports all sporting codes, even though football, rugby and cricket attract so much attention”.

The IOC session will put the focus again on the Olympic sporting codes and will provide an opportunity for South Africans to interact with the IOC leadership and prominent athletes.
Sentimentally important will be a reception during the period of the IOC meeting marking the marriage of IOC member Prince Albert of Monaco and the South African Olympic swimmer Charlene Wittstock.
Later this year, the country is scheduled to host COP 17, the largest gathering of world leaders and civil organisations to discuss climate change. There are huge expectations around this meeting and all eyes of the world will once again be on South Africa.

Solwezi hospital dismisses death claims

8

Authorities at Solwezi General Hospital in Northwestern Province have dismissed claims by members of the public that a patient died on the queue whilst waiting to be attended to by
medical personnel two days ago.

Hospital Medical Superintendent Brown Kandongo dismissed the allegations when Provincial Permanent Secretary Fabian Mumba paid a surprise visit to the health institution yesterday.

ZANIS reports that Dr. Kandongo said the claim was false and unfounded.

He explained that the hospital was working hard to provide quality medical services to the people despite being faced with a challenge of inadequate medical personnel.

He said the health institution had enough medicine in stock and assured people in the district of quality health service any time they visited the institution.

And Mr. Mumba said Government was committed to providing quality health care services to the public.

The Permanent Secretary said for this reason, Government was constructing four heath centers in Kizhingezhinge, Zambia, Mushitala and Zangamenu compounds in Solwezi district to help decongest the general hospital.

Mr Mumba said he was hopeful that when these health centers were completed, complaints of poor health care provision would reduce.

He said members of the general public would be properly attended to by health workers and would no longer spend long hours on queues at health institutions.

Lack of knowledge cause of cholera-DC

8
A typical street in Kanyama township in Lusaka of the the cholera prone areas

Acting Lusaka District Commissioner Martha Mwitumwa has observed that lack of adequate knowledge on hygiene has been one of the major causes of cholera outbreaks in the city.

Mrs. Mwitumwa said her office often received reports of disease outbreaks such as cholera and dysentery, which are related to lack of proper hygiene and sanitation in certain communities.

She was speaking at the launch of the “Wash Your Hands” sensitisation programme in Lusaka’s Kanyama compound today.

She explained that the sensitisation programme will take place in four of the seven constituencies of Lusaka namely Kanyama, Chawama, Mandevu
and Matero.

ZANIS reports that Mrs. Mwitumwa added that the Lusaka District Disaster Management Committee in conjunction with the United Nations Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF) has also come up with a community sensitisation programme that will help reduce risks among residents.

She said the launch of district risk reduction, preparedness and response programme will reduce flooding during the rain season and stop cholera outbreaks.

The Acting District Commissioner (DC) said the plan will consequently reduce mortality related to cholera through the implementation of water, sanitation, health, flood, control and information, education and communication programmes.

Mrs. Mwitumwa has since thanked UNICEF for working closely with Government in its efforts to prevent diseases and improve access to water and sanitation as a means of providing improved hygienic standards.

She further urged the people of Kanyama to take the message of hygiene awareness seriously so that the disease outbreaks can be lessened.

Meanwhile, Mrs Mwitumwa said despite numerous challenges and factors in the unplanned settlements, Government will continue working hard to deliver social services to the residents of Lusaka.

She said disasters in these unplanned settlements have had a negative impact on the economy through causing loss of life, damage to property and degradation to environment.

INTERVIEW WITH MUSIC PRODUCER GREEZY DUB

GREEZY DUB

Greezy Dub is a zambian music producer who is currently based in South Africa. He produces a variety of music from Hip hop to electo-house.

KAPA187:  Welcome to the interview ,first off , who is Greezy Dub , where did you get that name?

Greezy Dub : My real name is Duke Langa, im a 22 year old multi-talented, creative indivisual. Very laid back, easy to talk to, smart and open minded. I spent a lot of time outside of Zambia, grew up in the USA in a small town called Nashua in the state of New Hamphire from the age of 4 to 15. I finished my high school at roads park in 2005 and in 2007 went to CPUT (Cape Peninsula University of Technology) in Capetown, South Aftica and completed a National Diploma in Electrical Engineering in 2010. The “Greezy Dub” name came about in a funny way there’s no specific meaning but this is the story. Back in my highschool days around 2005 a year after I started producing I met another beat-maker by the name of Sam Aka grizzle, who grew up in the UK. We heard each other’s stuff and he liked my drums and I liked his strings. I used to go by Dubeous Duke so I put grizzle & dubious together to create GreezyDub , cause we had a disticntive sound so the name just stuck with me.

KAPA187:  Interesting story ,so  tell me , How did you get started in music production?

Greezy Dub : Well I have always had a passion for music since I was really young like 5 years old I would dress up like micheal Jackson and dance like him and my dad had alot of old records and CD collections so I was always around music. I started formally making music In 2004 at the age of 16. A friend of mine by the name of Chobela Aka Chobz told me he has this music making software called fruity loops 3.5. I asked him to bring me the CD cause he knew I had a general interest in music cause we would exchange music all the time. I took it home and had no idea how to use it but after hours and weeks of playing around with it I made my first beat. It was the wackest beat ever but I was going crazy calling all my cousins and friends to listen to it.

KAPA187:   So, when producing your music do you use real instruments or software like fruityloops and the like?  Are there any advantages of using real instruments over software.

Greezy Dub : I use software, right now I’m using fruity loops 9. I’ve never made beats from live instruments, though I play all my notes via the key-board. I barely sample anything so most of the time it’s my creation.

KAPA187:   How long have you been producing and who are your inspirations locally and internationally.

Greezy Dub : This is my 7th year producing. Most of the people that inspire me are international seeing that I spent most of my life outside of Africa. In terms of artist I’m inspired by Michael Jackson, Notorious BIG, in terms of producers Dr.Dre, Timabaland, The Neptunes, Swizz beatz, Kanye West, Danja Handz, Polow Da Don, Scott storch, just blaze & the runners just to name a few.

KAPA187:   Who have u produced for so far .

Greezy Dub : I have produced with a lot of people world-wide. Some just did a verse on my songs  others did a chorus, some I’ve done EP’s for, others mixtapes. A good number of them are currently working on some stuff with me. Some of the people ive worked with are :

Zambia – Inferior (rapper), Nick Pro (rapper), Klappa Haze (rapper), Sepo (rnb singer), Kasper (rapper), Kunda (rapper),Marvel Kasa(rapper), young N9ne (female rapper), Crisis (rapper)

Zimbabwe– Kapital K (rapper), Akilli (Rapper), Ray Chee (rnb singer), Larissa (Rnb singer), PS (Rapper).

South Africa- Dazz (rapper), Shonisani (house singer), Cyer (Rnb Singer), Caddy (Rapper), Basiq (rapper), Xola x (rapper), qualize (rapper)

Malawi- Eminent (rapper).
UK- Kemar Young (rapper), Trozion (rapper), Boney Black (rapper), Micheal waddy (rapper), Monique stylez (rnb singer), fuzzie bars (female rapper),

Italy Luca Barbieri (pop singer)

USA- Chronic (rapper), Sullee J (rapper), melo (rapper), J Focus (rapper), Joe n Joe (rnb
singers),

KAPA187:  Wow ,that’s a lot of people , what genre of music do you specialize in.

Greezy Dub :Well I’m mainly hiphop & R&B based but I also produce pop, electo-pop, electro, dance, dubstep & electro-house.

KAPA187:   What is distinctive about your production

Greezy Dub :Well I got a lot of influence seeing that I’ve lived in many countries an that’s potrayed in my sound. I like using weird sounds that people wouldn’t expect to here on a beat. Like alot of electro sounds  and I’m a drum & percussion guy so the majority of mystuff has hard hitting drums.

KAPA187:   Name one local and one international artist you would like to work with in the future , and give a reason.

Greezy Dub : I recently linked up with crisis in the beginning of the year and left him like 40 beats he’s defiantly one the people I would like to work with locally and internationally I would like to work with Lil Wayne I just think he’s one of the most talented and creative musicians out there would love to here him on my sound.

KAPA187:  Working with Lil wayne would be incredible , What has been your biggest achievement so far?

Greezy Dub :My biggest achievement as of yet is making the NO BORDERS track. It’s an idea that I had were I would get different artist from all over the globe to feature on 1 hot beat. So I posted up on facebook to artist that I have linked up with via the net and others which I didnt know to find out if they were interested in making some history. I told all the peeps that were interested to feature to inbox me there email address so I can send them the beat which I called bouncy means. I expected like 5 replies but luckily over 20 pepo replied. At the end of it all I asked for a minimum of an8 bar verse and I picked the best verse which included 14 rappers and 2 singers from about 7 different contries including USA, UK, SA. Zambia, Zimbabwe, Russia, Canada, botswanna.. The song got over 700 downloads up to date. So it was pretty cool achievement

KAPA187:  Do you adjust your production techniques to suit each individual artist? Can you give us a specific example?

Greezy Dub : Yeah most definatly man. I can easily adjust to most genres of music and I love experimenting. A good example is the un-expected color track I did for Shonisani from South Africa. It’s an electro house track that you can check out on my soundcloud I really went out my realm on that one seeing that I’m hiphop/rnb based.

KAPA187:   Its good to be diverse . What can we expect from Greezy Dub in the future?

Greezy Dub :You can expect a whole lot of new music from Greezy Dub. I’m currently under a management company by the name of AMEG (ask media entertainment Group) based in the UK so they are getting me a lot of placement with upcoming artist from there. I am also doing some in-house producing for a label in the USA by the name of ZMG (Zimmerman Music Group) so I got a lot of stuff coming out  with artists under their label. Locally I will be doing stuff with Zone Fam
diamond Chain and So Good.

KAPA187: Where can your fans listen to your music ?

Greezy Dub: facebook.com/GreezyDubmusic ,  my soundcloud ,reverbnation and Youtube pages.

THE MUSIC

ROCK TO IT

Has a nice Hiphop / dance feel to it. It is a definite club banger . I like how the beat changes up towards the end of the track.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jevUJAWfWGI

NO BORDERS

This track features 14 rappers and 2 singers from 6 different countries .It has an electronic /futuristic feel to it.  It is a bit long , at 10min , but is definitely enjoyable.

Sata pledges to restore the dignity of Zambians within 90 days

Patriotic Front leader Michael Sata
Patriotic Front leader Michael Sata

Patriotic Front president Michael Sata has pledged that his first task would be to restore the dignity of the Zambian people within 90 days of the PF coming to power.

The PF leader has since declared that the country’s largest opposition party is ready for the 2011 elections.

Mr. Sata says no matter how long it takes for Republican President Rupiah Banda to announce the date of elections, his party is ready to give the MMD a good run for their money.

He has accused president Banda of trying to catch the opposition political parties unaware.

Mr. Sata says the PF is aware of the tactics the MMD wants to use before the announcement of the election date.

He says his party will bench the MMD this time around so that the Zambian people can witness development under the PF government.

Meanwhile Mr Sata says the MMD has started implementing initiatives aimed at disturbing the holding of free and fair elections.

He has however urged the Zambian people not to allow the MMD hoodwink them into voting for them back into power.

[pullquote]Mr. Sata has dismissed the purported email allegedly written by Kabwata Member of Parliament Given Lubinda to PF secretary general on the $45 million it has allegedly received from Taiwanese and Afghan businessmen.[/pullquote]

He explains that if PF loses this year’s election, it will not be the party that will lose but the suffering Zambian people themselves.

And Mr. Sata has dismissed the purported email allegedly written by Kabwata Member of Parliament Given Lubinda to PF secretary general on the $45 million it has allegedly received from Taiwanese and Afghan businessmen.

He has since challenged those circulating the reports to report the matter to the Drug Enforcement Commission.

Mr Sata says Mr Lubinda does not deal with issues of finances in the party, adding that the authenticity of the said email is also highly questionable.

Mr. Sata was speaking this morning when he featured on Hot Fm’s Hot seat programme.

Deputy Minister advises chieftainess Nkomeshya to stop intimidating headmen supporting MMD

27
Chieftainess Nkomeshya captured during the Chakwela Makumbi

DEPUTY Minister of Local Government and Housing Moses Muteteka has called upon Chieftainess Nkomeshya of the Soli people of Chongwe to stop intimidating headmen supporting the ruling MMD.

Mr Muteteka said in Lusaka yesterday that the decision by Chieftainess Nkomeshya to intimidate headmen in her chiefdom amounts to infringing on her subjects’ human rights.

“If what we have heard that the Chieftainess is intimidating headmen who support the MMD is true, then it is very unfortunate because we do not expect their royal highnesses to take that route,” he said.

“Citizens should be allowed to enjoy their human rights. This is a democratic country and therefore, everyone is free to express themselves in the manner they deem fit. Members of the public should also be free to associate with anyone without being threatened or intimidated by anybody,” he said.

Mr Muteteka said headmen are free to express themselves in a constructive manner.

He warned the chieftainess against promoting dictatorship in her chiefdom.

“I would like to advise the headmen not to listen to people who have refused to see the development the MMD government has taken to Chongwe. Just like Chieftainess Nkomeshya has decided to contradict government by saying the authorities have done nothing in Chongwe, she should also be contradicted by people who have seen this development,” he said.

Mr Muteteka said government has built hospitals, schools, given farmers inputs and also sunk 500 boreholes.

“Surely, the development is visible for everyone to see, so how can Chieftainess Nkomeshya say there is nothing happening in Chongwe? The headmen are using water from boreholes, so they cannot follow her destructive campaign,” he said.

He said apart from developing the district, the MMD has improved service delivery in the area.

Mr Muteteka called on traditional leaders to follow resolutions passed in the House of Chiefs.

BERKELEY Mineral Resources is set to acquire a majority stake in the Luanshya copper tailings to further expand its presence in the “favoured international mining destination”.

The Altenative Investment Market(AIM) listed tailings processing company said last week that it has entered into a shareholders’ agreement to buy a 76 percent interest in three Luanshya copper tailings from Ng’wena Mining Resources for US$6 million.

The announcement follows the completion of the exclusivity period granted to Berkeley by a memorandum of understanding signed by the two companies in May.

A statement posted on Proactiveinvestors portal says the deal will be finalised after Berkeley receives the remaining information from Ng’wena to complete due diligence.

Proactiveinvestors is a leading multi-media news organisation, investor portal and events management business with offices in New York, Sydney, Toronto, Frankfurt and London.

The three dams, Old Dam, Chonga Dam and Akatiti Dam, contain tailings from the formerly operating Roan Antelope copper mine.

The project is located just 90 miles north of the Kabwe closed lead-zinc-silver mine, where Berkeley has just snapped up the remaining tailings.

“We are excited by the prospect of acquiring another valuable asset. Our interest in securing further substantial tailings resources has been confirmed by the due diligence we have carried out to date. We expect to be able to resolve the remaining points in the near future which will allow us to expand what is already a significant asset base,” said chairman of Berkeley Mineral Resources Masoud Alikhani.

Berkeley will pay Ng’wena US$1.25 million on completion of the sale and the remaining US$4.25 million in 2012.

A report prepared in compliance with the globally recognised JORC(joint ore reserves committee) standard in 2008 estimated the indicated resource at the three dams at Luanshya at 162 million tonnes of tailings material grading 0.24 percent copper, containing 380,700 tonnes of copper.

Meanwhile, Berkeley is planning to prepare the Kabwe tailings for processing to sell them on world markets.

Investors are waiting for a new JORC compliant resource statement for Kabwe, which should be available by the end of this month.

Shares in Berkeley declined 0.17 pence (4 percent) to trade at 4.28 pence yesterday in London. The company has a market capital of £43 million

First Lady gives 10 scholarships

First Lady Thandiwe Banda
First Lady Thandiwe Banda

FIRST Lady Thandiwe Banda has awarded scholarships to 10 Zambian scholars under the Binary First Lady of Zambia Post-Graduate Scholarships initiative.

Mrs Banda said during the awarding ceremony at State House yesterday her passion for an educated and knowledgeable nation inspired her to get interested in the scholarship programme.

This programme will, without doubt, open up a whole new world of opportunities for the recipients.

The Binary scholarships are an initiative of a Malaysian university known as Binary.

Mrs Banda said education is the backbone of nation-building because it enhances individual progression and contributes to national development.

“In this global village, advanced human capital leads to positive growth through education and its various components of research, innovation and technology, leading to enhanced social well-being of citizens.

“As Zambia aspires to become a middle-income country by 2030, it is imperative that education should move a step further by adding to general certificates, diplomas and degrees,” she said.

Mrs Banda said specialised training is important because modern industry uses modern machinery and technology, which require updated skills.

She said specialised training, therefore, plays a pivotal role in post-graduate education.

Mrs Banda thanked Professor Joseph Adaikalam, the founder of the Binary University College and his wife Datin Rohini Revi for coming to Zambia to contribute to the country’s education sector.

Prof Adaikalam advised the 10 students to always remember Zambia when they acquire skills, especially that there will not be bonded.

Scrap metal dealers want Government lift ban on exports of scrap metals

17

CONCERNED scrap metal dealers have appealed to the Ministry of Commerce, Trade and Industry to lift the ban on exports of scrap metal because local buyers are paying too little for it.

Reacting to an announcement that Government has banned exports of scrap metal in order to create reserves of raw materials for local iron and steel manufacturers, the dealers said the ban has come without consultation to their association.

Minister of Commerce, Trade and Industry Felix Mutati announced at the just ended 47th Zambia International Trade Fair in Ndola that Government has with immediate effect introduced incentives aimed at protecting the local steel-iron and pharmaceutical manufacturing industries.

But a scrap metal dealer, Patrick Nyambe, said it would have been fair enough for Government to consult exporters and not only manufacturers.

He said “banning scrap metal exports will disadvantage local dealers. The reason we export is that this brings more income to us and also contribute positively to the economy.”

“Local manufacturers are buying scrap metal from local dealers cheaply, they should attract us with good prices, then we will not export to other countries,” he said.

Another concerned scrap metal dealer, Stanley Mutinta, said local traders have stopped selling cast steel and cast iron due to lower prices, adding that it is not beneficial to sell locally.

[pullquote]”Local manufacturers are buying scrap metal from local dealers cheaply, they should attract us with good prices, then we will not export to other countries,” he said.[/pullquote]

And Fabian Chisulo added that the reason they export was due to non availability of good markets and prices offered.

He said the banning of scrap metals export will bring about unemployment adding that plans are underway to export scrap metals to India.
