Flyweight boxer Cassius Chiyanika became Zambia’s 4th Olympic casualty today in Beijing after existing in the preliminary round of the boxing event to Vincenzo Picardi of Italy.

Chiyanika lost 10-3 to Picardi who won bronze 2007 World Amateur Boxing Championships in Chicago last November.

The 24-year-old boxer from Nakambala who has been boxing for the last 4 years failed to win a single round despite a promising all-round display against the 25-year-old Picardi.

Chiyanika lost 2-1 in the 1st round, 3-1 in the 2nd in which he matched the Italian before losing 2-1 in round 3 and was later totally out-pointed 3-0 in the 4th.
Chiyanika joins fellow boxers Hastings Bwalya and Precious Makina out of the Olympics to end Zambia’s intertest in the boxing tournament.

Badminton player Eli Mambwe, who enjoyed a 1st round bye, was the 3rd Olympic representative from Zambia to exit the games after he lost 2-0 on Monday night to Erwin Kehlhoffner of France in the two player’s 2nd round match on Monday night.

This leaves swimmers Ellen Height and Zane Jordan plus track athletes Tony Wamulwa and Rachel Nachula still in the medals hunt.

Jordan enters the fray on Thursday and Height on Friday-both in their respective men’s and female 50 meters free-style.

Nachula takes to the track on Saturday when the heats for the 400 meters begin while Wamula will grace the stage on August 20 in the 5000 meters heats.

No acting VEEP- Mulongoti

122

Chief government spokesperson, Mike Mulongoti says there is no one acting as vice President in Zambia.

Mr. Mulongoti said the Vice President, Rupiah Banda carries his position and continues acting as head of state.

He said this is because President Levy Mwanawasa did not appoint anyone to act in the position.

Mr. Mulongoti said Mr. Banda was appointed by President Mwanawasa to act as head of state.

The chief government spokesperson told ZNBC news that minister of defence, George Mpombo is acting leader of government business in Parliament.

Indeni Offloads 6 Million Litres Diesel

24

INDENI Petroleum Refinery has offloaded six million litres of diesel onto the market to lessen shortages in different parts of the country.

Indeni director-general, Michael Faulkner, said in Ndola yesterday that the company had since Saturday introduced measures to ensure Zambia had sufficient supplies of diesel.

“We have already offloaded two million litres out of which 1.5 million litres are being distributed to different parts of the country by oil marketing companies (OMCs) and have 500,000 litres. An additional four million litres will be released to the OMCs today,” he said.

In an interview shortly after Copperbelt Minister, Mwansa Mbulakulima called on him at the refinery plant, Mr Faulkner said the diesel shortages would no longer be justified.

Mr Mbulakulima said following the action taken by Indeni, he was hopeful that the shortages would be addressed.

The minister said there was no justification for some OMCs to continue hoarding the commodity for speculative reasons.

Meanwhile, the flow of diesel in Lusaka yesterday improved although some filling stations ran out of the commodity within hours of being supplied.

Meanwhile, the Zambia National Farmers Union (ZNFU) has appealed to the Energy Regulation Board (ERB) and Government to clearly state the fuel supply situation in Zambia and the expected future trends.

Executive director, Songowayo Zyambo said in a statement yesterday that the ZNFU desired a clear statement from the ERB and the Government on the status of fuel supply in the country.

Mr Zyambo said such information would help ZNFU members plan their activities meaningfully.

“The picture portrayed so far is that oil marketing companies are the ones responsible for the erratic supply of diesel.

“We want to know why the OMCs are behaving in this way and whether the ERB and Government are putting in measures to compel OMCs to supply fuel,” the statement reads in part.

Mr Zyambo said ZNFU was concerned about the fuel price increases and the current erratic supply because agricultural activities need a lot of fuel for ploughing, harvesting, spraying and other operations.

He said the wavering supply of fuel was creating much anxiety to the farmers.

However, the ERB explained that the current consignment of fuel that was bought at a higher price necessitated the hike.

ERB board chairperson, Sikota Wina said in a statement yesterday that the other factor that had contributed to the price increase was the exchange rate which represented a depreciation of 4.3 per cent.

Mr Wina said had the Government not reduced tax on fuel in June, the price upward adjustment could have been more severe, at 25 per cent than the current 13.

“Additionally, there was no price increase from October 2007 to March 2008 and a small increment in April 2008 due to the Government subsidy which amounted to K96 billion,” he said.

Chief Puta disappointed by govt

26

Senior Chief Puta of the Bwile people in Chienge district in Luapula province has accused government of belittling his chiefdomship.

The chief said this at his palace during the Builile traditional ceremony following the alleged failure by government to officiate at this year’s ceremony.

Senior Chief Puta told Luapula Province acting Permanent Secretary, Clement Siame, that he was disappointed by government’s alleged failure to send a cabinet minister to grace the ceremony.

Mines and Minerals Development Minister, Kalombo Mwansa, was expected to officiate at the ceremony which took place over the weekend.

Mr. Siame apologized to the chief over government’s failure to send a cabinet minister to officiate at the ceremony but the chief refused to accept the apology and sent the Permanent Secretary away.

Chief Puta also refused to accept government gifts which the Permanent Secretary, Chienge District Commissioner, Goodluck Chisabi and other senior government officiate presented to him.

The traditional leader consequently refused Mr. Siame from officiating on behalf of Dr. Mwansa and immediately appointed Paramount Chief Mpezeni of the Ngoni people in Eastern Province to be guest of honor at the traditional ceremony.

“Your telling us this late that the guest of honour could not make it is a sign that you have belittled my importance. My chiefdom has tried to cooperate with government but not in this manner,” the chief said.

“I don’t want to have anything to do with government. Paramount chief Mpezeni will be our guest of honour for the traditional ceremony this year. You can as well take all your gifts, I don’t want them,” senior chief Puta said.

He ordered Mr. Siame, who was flanked by Chienge District Commissioner Goodluck Chisabi and other senior government officials to keep their gifts which were supposed to be presented to him at the main arena.

And in his speech, Paramount Chief Mpezeni challenged the people in Luapula to harness the abundant water resource and engage in irrigation farming.

The paramount chief noted that the province could assume the position of national food security if it utilized its vast land and water resources.

“We don’t have such water and fertile soils back home so utilize it and produce food for the entire country,” Paramount chief Mpezeni said.

The cost of a better life

34

Dear sissy,

How are you and the family? I am well and love being here at Havard university. Who would have thought a boy from Kalingalinga would land at Havard! I miss my wife and kids though. As you you know I left Mary 7 months pregnant. Please check on her once in a while for me. She isn’t so impressed that I won’t be there when the baby is born and will only get to see the baby when he/she is 3 years old. Its a tough choice I had to make but I think my getting a pHD will eventually pay off.

Okey my little sissy take care and greeting to my brother-in -law and the kids.

Yours Max

Dear Max,

It was nice hearing from you and that you are fine. Indeed,we as a family are proud of your academic achievements. However, you should know that your in laws are very upset that you left Mary heavily pregnant with two other kids to look after. I did go to see her. I think you can tell she is depressed. She feels you value your education more than your family.

Max, I sometimes tend to side with her too. You have hardly spent time with your wife and kids the last 2 years. You just came back from the U.K where you were doing your masters. Your family still stay in a small, dilapidated rented flat in Rhodes Park. Max junior calls you uncle Max instead of Daddy because he’s only spent 1 full year with you, out of his 3 years of existence. Now you are talking of coming back to Zambia after 3 years! Your children will not know you. I hope you will at least be coming for holidays.

Anyway. I hope your pHD brings you much happiness. Sorry for being harsh. You know I love you but sometimes your little sissy has to tell it as it is.Your kids are paying a huge price for your pursuit of a better life. Take care.

ZB forced to import empty bottle

82

Zambia Breweries has been forced to import empty bottles from South Africa due to the poor empty bottle returning culture among some members of the public.

Company Corporate Affairs Manager Wendi Muche says the company has resorted to the importation of empty bottles because some consumers were withholding the empty bottles.

Ms. Muche however said that the beverage manufacturing company is now back in full operation and satisfying the demand on the market after importing empty bottles from South Africa.

She told ZANIS in Lusaka today that the public should embrace a consistent culture of returning and disposing off of beverage bottles.

Ms. Muche said Zambian Breweries has so far lost an undisclosed amount of money due the recent shortage of empty bottles for packaging of beverages which the company experienced.

She added that the shortage also resulted in shortage of beverages in some parts of the country.

Ms. Muche also disclosed that the company is also currently discussing with the Environmental Council of Zambia (ECZ) on devising a mechanism of collecting dumpy bottles for recycling.

Ms. Muche however said the bottles will be transported to the neighboring Zimbabwe for recycling as there is no glass crushing and manufacturing company in Zambia.

She said the move is in line with environmental safety standards adding that Zambia Breweries is concerned with the manner in which the disposable beverage bottles are being disposed by the consumers.

Ms. Muche has since urged the public to return empty beverage bottle and ensure that disposable bottles are properly disposed off in designated places.

Lusaka and some parts of the Copperbelt were last week hit by a shortage of Beverages due to a shortage of empty bottles that Zambia Breweries experienced.

Most shops in Lusaka had by Wednesday run out of the beverages with some traders taking advantage and hiking the price of the drinks by between 100 and 200 kwacha.

MP commissions two bridges in his constituency

21

Ministry of Information and Broadcasting Services Deputy Minister, David Phiri, has commissioned two new bridges constructed at a cost of K64 million under the Constituency Development Fund (CDF) in Katete district.

Speaking when he commissioned Kalowe bridge in Mkaika constituency yesterday, Mr. Phiri said the bridge will ease the transportation of agricultural products and inputs to and from market centres and farming blocks which was almost impossible for farmers in the past.

He said the bridge will also help school going children to manage to go to school and other villagers to cross the river to access medical care from health centres during rain seasons, which was not possible previously.

Mr. Phiri, who is also Mkaika Member of Parliament, said he would ensure that CDF was spent on significant developmental projects that benefited large number of people in the community.

In the past, only a few people belonging to groups such as women’s clubs were benefiting from the CDF.

Mr. Phiri expressed satisfaction at the quality of work done by Libean Contractor, a local contractor based in Katete.

Later, he commissioned Mponda bridge, and reiterated government’s continued implementation of developmental projects in Katete district and the whole Eastern province.

And headman Mutambalika, Island Banda, who represented several other village headmen, commended the ‘new deal’ government for developing the province.

Mr. Banda also commended government for its transparency by making the CDF known to the people.

He said in the past, CDF was not known to villagers as a result, it was just plundered at the expense of ignorant needy people in rural areas.

He observed that the two bridges would enable people to access health facilities even in the rain seasons.

He added that the two facilities would also ease movements of people for their various activities across the two rivers.

And Katete District Council Director of Works, Monday Muwowo, urged people to take good care of the new bridges so that they can last longer.

Mr. Muwowo warned the villagers against the use of ox-sledges on the bridges saying these were destructive to bridges.

And GOVERNMENT has released Twenty four billion Kwacha for the construction of a high school in Nyimba District, Eastern Province.

Nyimba District Commissioner, Alexander Miti, disclosed this during the Provincial Development and Coordinating Committee (PDCC) meeting in Chipata.

Mr. Miti said that the school was being constructed at Kacholola where work had reached an advanced stage.
