Maamba retrenches woes take a new twist

3

By Tovin Ngombe
Wrangles among the Maamba Coal mine retrenched workers have persisted as negotiations to withdrawal the injunction to secure the release of one billion Kwacha that government paid them have failed.

Despite the two groups seeking Sinazongwe District Commissioner Laiven Apuleni’s intervention they failed to reach a consensus.

Speaking at a meeting held at Izuma lodge on Sunday, the defecting committee that filed the injunction in Lusaka High Court to broke the one billion Kwacha meant for all retrenched workers accepted to withdrawal it.

Mr. Apuleni told leaders from the defecting committee and the legally elected one to inform the retrenches wives and widows that had gathered outside Izuma lodge to wait for the outcome of the meeting about the censuses they had reached.

The DC urged both committees to travel to Lusaka to talk to their lawyers to present the papers High Court to have the case be withdrawn according to their agreement.

Mr. Apuleni told both committees to swallow their pride and look at the hungry woman that have been gathering for the past three days to have the matter be resolved because it had taken three months since their money was held up in the bank.

He said whatever differences they had it had nothing to stop the widows and other retrenches wives from buying mealie meal the stepple food of Zambians.
On Friday Last week widows and retrenched workers wives gathered at the house for the defecting group’s chairperson Boniface Chola to force him to withdrawal the injunction because it had no bearing on the money their husbands had worked for.

Maamba Police persuaded the women to disperse because it was unlawful gathering.

However, the defecting group represented by Chola met the legally binding group represented by Charles Simbanza on Sunday night that they would not withdrawal the case despite assuring the widows after the meeting.
Mr. Simbanza said the defecting group has given other conditions that were not agreed upon in the meeting to have the case be withdrawn.
He said Mr. Chola’s camp was demanding for inclusion of the share from the K800, 000,000 that was paid six months ago to the retrenches.
Mr. Chola said they have their own lawyer and the share of the money that government gives them have to be transferred to their group.
But some retrenches talked to said the defecting group was bitter for being voted out of the committee and have decided to form their own group so that they could continue enjoying the privileges of getting allowances when they go Lusaka for meetings.
Malala Muchimba a widow said the woman wanted their money because they have run out of food and most of their children have been chased out of Schools.
There are 341 retrenches among them 202 have died without getting their money.
Among the 341 retrenches 71 belong to the defecting group and it is alleged that most of the names they have were ‘doctored’ because some were for dead people.

ZCTU to sumbit ten names for NCC

0

The Zambia Congress of Trade Unions (ZCTU) has disclosed that it will submit ten names from ZCTU and its affilliates to cabinet for participation in the National Constitution Conference (NCC).

ZCTU President, Leonard Hikaumba, says the proposed ten names of member
representatives will be submitted to Cabinet after a general meeting to be held
soon.

Mr Hikaumba told ZANIS in an interview in Lusaka today that participating in the NCC
is an effective way of contributing to the Constitution making process.

He noted that the fact that the labour movement has a duty to represent and
articulate issues related to workers interests and other vulnerable people in
society, the congress found it prudent to participate in the NCC.

Mr Hikaumba stated that the proposed ten names will be ratified by the ZCTU General
Council at the meeting and be submited to cabinent for the NCC consideration.

Meanwhile, the ZCTU leader has called for the promotion of dialogue among
government, Non-Governmental Organisations, civil society and political parties in
order to bring the NCC to fruition.

Mr Hikaumba says government leaders and other key stakeholders should desist from
making inflamatory and provocative language when debating on matters of national
interest like the Constitution.

He said all stekeholders should continue taking part in order to reach a consensus
before holding the National Constitution Conference.

Mr Hikaumba further appealed to government to cultivate a sense of trust and begin
to create confidence in other key stakeholders to sit on the NCC.

And the Zambia Congress of Trade Unions (ZCTU) has expressed concern at the
continued delay of the salary negotiations.

ZCTU President Leonard Hikaumba says the labour movement is worried of the
non-commencement of salary negotiations.

He pointed out that the non-commencement of salary negotiations will affect the 2008
national budget.

He said as the budget goes into its final stage, there was need to finish the salary
negotiations.

Mr Hikaumba further appealed to government through the Finance and National Planning
Minister, Ng’andu Magande, to consider coming up with a pro-poor 2008 national
budget.

NPS bus reduced to asshes in Mwinilunga

0

A bus belong to NPS Bus Services has been reduced to ashes after it developed a mechanical fault on its way to Mwinilunga district but no lives were lost.

And when Zambia News and Information Services rushed to the scene found the bus
reduced to a skeleton.

The bus was gutted by fire around 24.00 hours on its way to Mwinilunga 25 kilometers
outside the BOMA and only 6 people were reported to be on board before the bus was
reduced to ashes.

According to one of the eye witnesses who sought anonymity, the bus was stationary
when it was suddenly engulfed in hell fires.

Speaking at the scene Mwinilunga District Commissioner, Webster Samakesa, said he
was saddened by the development.

“Truly I am very saddened with the burning of the NPS bus because it was one of our
reliable means of transport,” he said.

He stressed that NPS bus services was among the most reliable transport that local
people frequently used when traveling to and from to the district.

“It is a serious below to the district in terms of transport as the bus used to
services Mwinilunga, Lusaka directly,” he noted.

Mr Samakesa explained that the cause of the fire has not yet been established as
investigations have since been instituted.

Arsenal, Man U supporters fight in Siavonga

17

A serious fight arose yesterday in Siavonga Township between supporters of England based teams, Manchester United and Arsenal football clubs.

The fight between the two rival supporters started immediately after Arsenal
equalized in the dieing minutes of the match that saw the two teams battle to a 2-2
goal aggregate.

The fight that occurred at Kariba North Bank recreation Club was as a result of
insults that some Manchester supporters hailed at Arsenal fans after Arsenal scored
the second goal.

Security at the premises had a tough time separating the two men that exchanged
blows causing commotion in the T.V room, forcing some people to vacate the room
before the match finally came to an end.

Soon after the match ended and order restored at the premises, Arsenal fans that
made contributions in terms of money and bought crates of beer, further went wild
dancing to music that was being played at the club in celebration of their team’s
performance that has so far seen Arsenal playing all their games without losing.

Club representative, Geoffrey Mwale, who described the fight between fans as
unfortunate, told ZANIS in an interview that in future people that engage themselves
in fights at the premises will be arrested and taken to the police.

Sata salutes police for unearthing copper scam in Ndola

87

Patriotic Frond (PF) leader, Michael Sata, has saluted Inspector General of Police Ephraim Mateyo and the police service for unearthing a massive copper theft syndicate in which more than K4 Billion worth of minerals were allegedly stolen by a Ndola based Chinese company.

Mr. Sata also appealed to Zambians to help the police with information that will
help in the recovery of stolen copper and other minerals from various companies.

He was speaking in Chingola yesterday at a campaign rally for PF Nchanga
constituency parliamentary candidate Wylbur Simuusa ahead of the by elections
scheduled for Thursday, November 8, 2007.

The Nchanga Parliamentary seat fell vacant after former Member of Parliament (MP)
Charles Chimumbwa defected from the PF to the ruling MMD.

Mr Sata urged the electorates to vote for the PF candidate if Nchanga constituency
was to experience meaningful economic development.

He alleged that Mr Chimumbwa, who is contesting for the vacant seat on the MMD
ticket, had failed to account for K200 million Constituency Development Fund (CDF)
as he had not initiated any developmental programmes while serving as MP for Nchnaga
constituency.

The PF leader also dispelled allegations that he had been bought by the Taiwanese
government to speak against China and its investments in Zambia.

Mr Sata said there was need for developmental programmes that will create jobs for
youths to save them from social ills such as excessive bear drinking and drug abuse.

And PF Spokesperson Given Lubinda defended his parties resolve to solicit for money
from Taiwan saying even the ruling party was received funds from the Chinese
government.

Mr Lubinda said the Ncahnga by elections was a choice between slavery and freedom
for the electorates in Nchanga constituency as voting for the PF candidate would
entail their freedom.

The rally was attended by several PF members of parliament and party officials.

But it took Zesco and Chambishi time extra-time and post-match penalties in their Barclays Cup semifinal doubleheader played at Nchanga Stadium for both teams to book their final place to be played at Woodlands in a fortnight’s time.

Zesco continued their dominance over Green Buffaloes this season to beat the armymen 2-1 in a game that saw two sent-offs for the formers defender Kunda Mushota and latter’s coach George Lwandamina.

Zesco took the lead in the 74th minute through Enoch Sakala before Morgan Hanjema equalized in the 88th minute.

Midfielder Rainford Kalaba clinched the winner two minutes into time added-on of the 90 minutes to see Zesco reach their third cup final this season.

Eradication of poverty will aid HIV/AIDS fight- KK

0

First Republican President Dr. Kenneth Kaunda says government efforts aimed at eradicating poverty in the country must be supported by all stakeholders if the fight against the spread of HIV/AIDS is to be won. Dr. Kaunda, who is patron of Habitant for Humanity Zambia, says this is because poverty is at the core in the spread of the pandemic.

He was speaking in Lusaka today when Stanbic Bank donated US$12 000 to Habitant for
Humanity Building Project.
`
Dr. Kaunda said Stanbic Bank must be saluted for its gesture because the donation
would go a long way in helping the vulnerable in society.

He, however, pointed out that poverty would only be eradicated if every individual
channels efforts towards poverty eradication.

Speaking earlier, Stanbic Bank Managing Director Larry Kalala said the provision of
shelter is a fundamental Human Right.

He said Stanbic Bank would endeavour to practically demonstrate its social
responsibility by coming to the aid of the disadvantaged.

Ms. Kazunga said over 60 houses have been built and 360 people have benefited.

Govt gives Serenje district 208 school desks

0

Serenje district Commissioner Musonda Chunga has expressed disappointment that some contractors were not taking government projects seriously.

Mr Chunga said this after inspecting some development projects in the area awarded
to various contractors.

The DC noted with sadness hat some contractors did not bother to move to the site
but just asked villagers to do the work on their behalf.

At Mambwe Locha school in Muchinga constituency, where a one by three classroom
block is being constructed by a Kigwe based contractor, Mr. Chunga found the
villagers engaged by the contractor, putting concrete in piecemeal without anyone
from the company to supervise them.

The DC said government wanted serious contractors to carry developmental projects
so that communities are well served.

The school was allocated K83 million by government to put a modern structure to
replace grass thatched classroom blocks.

Works at Miswema Basic school, which was also allocated K83 million was going on
well and headmaster Lawrence Mazuba expressed happiness that government had
considered funding the school.

Meanwhile, government has given Serenje district 208 desks to be shared among the
three constituenmcies

Serenje district education board secretary Patson Sichone confirmed the development
ZANIS in Serenje today.

Sichone said the desks were being distributed to the needy schools in Muchinga,
Serenje Central and Chitambo constituencies.

He said in Chitambo constituency, Mukando Basic school will receive 29 desks while
Katikulula and Kaundu schools in the same constituency will receive 20 desks each.

Fikondo will get 10.

The DEBS said in Serenje Central constituency, Chikubula Basic school will get 28
desks, Miselo Kaika 21, and Mutale Basic school 20 desks.

Inflation reduction recipe to investing – Maureen

1

First Lady Maureen Mwanawasa says the reduction in inflation rate is a recipe for financial institutions to consider investing in communites.

The First Lady attributes to this to the good fiscal micro-economic policies put in
place that have started benefiting the people and expressed gratitude to what
government is doing in the macro-sector.

She however says women face the major challenges of accessing financial services.

The First Lady was speaking in Lusaka today when she addressed scores of mandevu
women who thronged her.

This happened soon after she launched the ‘Make Zambia Clean and Healthy Week’ in
Lusaka’s Mandevu Compound.

She urged women to meaningfully participate in the Make Zambia Clean and Healthy
Week which runs from November 1 to 7, 2007.

The First Lady hailed Barclays Bank Zambia which has sprung its operations in
communities like Chawama, Chilenje, Matero and Mtendere among other compounds
investing in peri urban communities in Lusaka in an effort to empowering vulnerable
women who seemingly carry the face of poverty, hunger and HIV/AIDS.

She appealed to women to be bold, united and to speak with one voice if their
challenges were to be adequately addressed.

”Women continue to bare the most challenge of vulnerability. This New Deal
government is working because of the good economic policies put in place. As a woman
and speaking for women, we need more doors to be opened to women so that they could
stand on their own materially and financially,” Mrs Mwanawasa said.

Recently, Central Statistical Office Acting Director, Elfreda Chulu, announced a 0.3
percent reduction in inflation rate for the month of October, 2007 from 9.3 percent
to to a single digit, nine.

Ms. Chulu attributed the reduction in inflation to the decline in the cost of food
and non-food products.

Maureen launches Make Zambia Clean and Healthy Week

6

First Lady Maureen Mwanawasa says inadequate safe water supply and sanitation, inadequate personal hyiene and poor eating habits, coupled with low levels of knowledge on basic health matters, have continued to affect people in communites.

Mrs. Mwanawasa also lamented that the sitaution worsens during the rainy season and
challenged commuinites to exhibit high levels of cleanliness around their
environment, noting that communities experienced out-breaks of epidemic dieases such
as cholera, dysentery and other water borne dieases .

Mrs. Mwanwasa says it is cognizant that people in communites value the importance of
keeping their surroundings clean, a practice that will help speed the attainement of
achieving the MDGs as a primary goal for a clean and better Zambia.

The First Lady was speaking in Lusaka’s Mandevu compound today when she launched the
‘Make Zambia Clean and Healthy Week runing from November 1 to 7.

The First Lady demonstrated the Keep zambia Clean by cleaning the mandevu clinic
wards and other surounding areas.

She also planted a tree as a preservance measure of conserving the environment.

Mrs Mwanawasa said the success of this programme calls for communities to actively
partticipate in improving access to clean and safe drinking water, provision of good
sanitary facilities, changing the mind set of people against indiscriminate throwing
of litter, encouraging proper garbage collection and disposal points.

She further pointed out other clean measures as promotion of health awareness as
well as enforcement at individual, community, institutional hygiene agaist high
levels of nuisance in trading places and homes.

The First Lady expressed happiness that the Fith National development Plan and the
Vision 2030 programmes have given cleanliness and health the prominence it deserves
and challenged govermnet organs to institutionalise this clean saving national
programme.

Mrs. Mwanwasa reteriated that unity and cleanileness are powerful factors because
their values go beyond social, political and religious differences and paid
gratitute to government for providing leadership shown by overwhelming support
received from stakeholders aimed at ensuring Zambia is made and kept clean and
healthy.

And speaking earlier, Ministry of Health Director of technical and suport services,
Dr. Velepi Mtonga, urged communites to comply with medical experts if the keep
Zambiua Clean is to effectively succeed.

She said the ministry is challenged by the disease burden but reteriated that
government will win the keep Zambia Clean campaign in accordance with the global
mandate of provision of quality health services closer to the people to making
Zambia disease-free and malaria free among other major challenges.

And Mandevu Clinic Nursing Sister In-charge, Annie Silondwa, said Mandevu, with a
catchment of 76,708 people, is burdened by shortage of water, poor sanitation
conditions as well as limited garbage collection points.

Mrs. Silondwa said the situation exposes Mandevu compound to water borne disease
such as cholera and dysentery.

2007 Barclays Cup Semifinal Preview

4

2007 Faz Premier League champions Zesco United are 90 minutes away from reaching their third cup final this year
when they face Green Buffaloes in a Barclays Cup
semifinal doubleheader at Nchanga Stadium in Chingola.

The other semifinal clash at Nchanga will be between promoted Chambishi FC and Konkola Blades who meet in the opening game at 12:30.

Zesco have already won the season opening Samuel “Zoom” Ndholvu Memorial Charity Shield and the Coca Cola Cup on top of the league title they secured last month.

This will be the second time Zesco and Buffaloes will be meeting in a cup tournament this season.
Zesco and Buffaloes faced-off in the semifinals of the “Zoom” Charity Shield that the former won 2-1 last February on the Ndola teams long road this season to picking up their first honor of 2007.

Zesco have gone on to enjoy a competitive edge over Buffaloes this season with a 3-0 away win and 1-1 home draw in Week 1 and 16 league games respectively this season.

Zambia midfielder and this seasons current joint top scorer Rainford Kalaba on 21 goals has scored four goals against Buffaloes-two of them in the 3-0 demolition at Independence Stadium in that delayed Week 1 match played on March 25.

Together with his co-top scorer and Zesco striker Enoch Sakala they are expected to help inspire against Buffaloes as they aim for an unprecedented fourth debut cup honor in one season by a top-flight club.

Buffaloes meanwhile will be hoping their prolific form in the Barclay’s Cup in which they have averaged two goals a game will continue in contrast to their current form in the league.
Zambia Under-23 striker Reuben Tembo, Ezekiel Tembo including influential midfielders Noel Mwandila and Sebastien Mwansa are all available as George Lwandamina’s team searches for its first competitive win over Zesco this season.

And Aggrey Chiyangi will be looking to cap a very eventful season after guiding Chambishi back to the top-flight on the first attempt following their relegation last term when his team takes on Blades in the other semifinal tie.

Blades will be wary of Chambishi who have already claimed the scalp of two big league teams in as many cup competitions they have played in this season including the Barclays Cup where they beat troubled 2006 league champions Zanaco 2-1 in the preliminary round.

Chambishi on Independence Day, October 24 beat a resurgent Power Dynamos 2-0 in the pre-quarterfinals of the Mosi Cup.

That victory over Fodson Kabole’s Power is a clear sign that Chambishi mean business with promotion secured and out of the way as they dream of a fruitful visit to the bank after the final on November 23 at Woodlands Stadium in Lusaka.
