The ruling Movement for Multiparty Democracy (MMD) has extended the deadline of submitting application letters from individuals wishing to stand as presidential candidates for the forthcoming by-elections on its ticket.
The extension is from the initial deadline of August 26th to Friday, August 29th 2008.
Party National Secretary, Katele Kalumba, said in a press statement to ZANIS today that the MMD would accept applications from all eligible members of the party for the position of president.
Dr. Kalumba said the party would not intimidate anyone who would like to stand for the position.
“The national secretary would like to warn that no member, no family, occupation, region, religion, tribe, no gender should be intimidated in their aspirations to be considered as candidates for republican presidency under MMD ticket,” he said.
He further explained that applications from candidates would be considered in confidence until they were cleared by the his office
He said the MMD constitution required that convection be held for the election and therefore, the legal committee which was detailed to look at the mode of adoption could make recommendation to the National Executive Committee (NEC).
Dr. Kalumba MMD was a party that existed to promote democracy and fight discrimination and therefore, it must support those who would want to aspire to be considered for president under MMD ticket.

The party should consider Maureen instead of just talking about RB’s advantage through the many state functions he will perform in the next 90 days. Who knew president Mwanawasa more? The problem in Africa is that people do not recognise the role of wives in the performance of men. Few people actually know that it is the first lady who as a lawyer helped the husband to draw up his mission statement at the time RB was in in UNIP shortly before he crossed over to FDD. This talk of Maureen taking over as President should cease. all of us Zambians are at a loss with the death of presdent Mwanawasa but should not elect our next President as a result of being sympathetic. Being a wife to a head of state doesn’t qualify one to the do the job. I personally think tere are mpr suitable candidates for the job.

Those who want Molini to contest are exhibiting a kind of hero worshiping for LPM. One Program that our Late President put in place though he has left it without launching it which I think who ever takes over should assure Zambians that he will see to it that it is implemented is the Citizens Empowerment Fund. From the reaction of people in the Rural Zambia who have no opportunities to access developmental funds, The CEF made sense to them and it was seen as a blessing by government. The question the voters must ask themselves as they cast their vote is; Who is going to create a conducive environment for them to empower themselves and set them on the road towards porverty freedom?

The man is just doing some administrative work on the application affidavits.Of course he has Jeff Kande and Chairman Mabenga’s office fully accountable.They will then take acknowledge receipt of all applications to individual applicants.Then take all the applications to a full and ready NEC for nomination.The benchmark of NEC candidate to win are very clear.Corruption free, card carrying member of the party continuously over 3 years and endorsed by NEC openly.Already many have made up their choice subject to casting their open vote.Votes will be counted right there and winner announced then the activated Defense and security wings will be alert to crash any madness.

These elections are not about choosing the best candidate for zambia; they are about recovering from a shock breakdown of a delivery system due to the loss of the principal. Please, do understand that whoever wins will not re-enginerr the zambian economy in this term but should just stabilise the ship until it gets to the shore in 2011. That is why, if I were HH or Sata, I would not have contested but would have requested MMD to submit names of people who would be ratified by parliament for them to elect a President of the country for the remaining term. That person will not operate as a full fledged president because he will have to work with a parliament. Limited in scope and time.
