Government says it is committed to ensuring availability of resources for smooth running of operations at the University of Zambia and Copperbelt University.

The two Universities today ushered in new councilors to guide the two institutions on administrative issues pertinent to smooth administrative running of the two institutions.

Minister of Education Professor Lungwangwa said the Council is a trustee body expected to exhibit exemplary manner of conduct and observe highest standards of objectivity in their operations.

Speaking at an inaugural Council meeting for the Copperbelt and University of Zambia, Professor Lungwangwa pointed out that Government expects the new Council to take more responsibility in the running of the two Universities.

Professor Lungwangwa said the Council should ensure that the universities maintain the national vision by which they were made, to be maintained.

He stated that when things go wrong in the University it was the Council’s responsibility to iron out issues leading to that misunderstanding.

He further said the Council was not supposed to involve itself in the daily administration activities of the University but to make provisions which regulate matters within the administrations based on impartiality, openness and truth when executing duties.

And speaking earlier, Copperbelt University Chancellor Professor Muyunda Mwanalushi commended the Ministry of Education for coming up with a powerful team of Councilors to look into affairs of the two Universities.

He said the team will provide guidance on the vision and direction to the two institutions adding that the responsibilities are enormous saying he was confident that the Council members would certainly take the two universities to higher heights.

Professor Mwanalushi stated that the Council members should take time to read reports and learn about the problems affecting the Universities in order to provide solutions.

The Professor said he was delighted to mention that the out going chairman provided audited accounts saying the good work must be emulated by the new team.

Professor Mwanalushi appealed to Government to increase funding for the university to operate smoothly.

And University of Zambia Chancellor Jacob Mwanza said the University Council plays a pivotal role in the governance of the two institutions.

He said this in a speech read on his behalf by Vice Chancellor Professor Stephen Simukanga.

Professor Mwanza noted that the University Council was also significant in the persistent conflicts in the two institutions.

He said an inquiry in the causes of unrest in the two institutions and the cause of student’s involvement in political activism to staff issues of funding has become prevalent in this period.

Professor Mwanza said he was however grateful to Government for facilitating the reopening of the University after the recent industrial unrest which led to its closure.

  1. GOOD THINKING BUT WHERE HAVE THEY BEEN ALL ALONG? WRONG TIMING ANYWAY PF WILL CONTINUE AM SURE IT IS EVIDENT THAT SATA IS WINNING.WATCH THE SPACE

  2. It really pains me when I think of the problems at Zambia’s highest institutions of learning. I do not have good memories about my stay at Unza apart from the BC. It just reminds me of riots, police beating up students, tear gases all over ruins residence and the like. Hopefully a permanent solution can be found for the good of our universities.

  3. What happened? UZA and CBU suddenly have become priorities… boooooozaaaa…..

VOTE FOR THE MAN WITH THE BOAT!!!
    VOTE FOR SATA!!!!

  4. MMD come up with very good ideas during the elections i think thats why people are suggesting we hold elections like every year. that way things will change for the better.

  5. Hi baby C how are you and hey my friend osama bin zed what happened to the pastor title?! Am totally sold to the Pabwato ideal, where are these councilors from?!

  6. RB is giving me the creeps, why is he doing all these things now?The first thing they thought of was their pockets with their salary increaments, now it’s election time and they want to pretend they care? When there is little food in the house the older folk eat less or nothing and leave the food to the young ones, but these guys didn’t think like that a couple of months back.If they win, watch them and you will see for yourselves just how far this liberty to hand out they are expressing now will go!!!

  7. People like we all know democracy does not mean that it is an ideal system for which makes the functioning of the government flawless. Democracy has also its failure. It does not guarantee social justice. Sometimes those in powers are corrupt-as is the case now in the zed. At the time the governing bodies keep their actions a secret and do not take the people into the confidence. It is slow in functioning and is incapable of coping up with emergency but in spite of all this defects democracy is the most effective form of government…bwafya…

    VIVA CHANGE! PABWAAAAAAAAAATOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO>>>>

  8. Nothing good will come out of these councillors. I do not like being negative, but the fact that they are appointed by the Minister and government means that they will have to tow the political line. My suggestion is that this group of people should apply for this undertaking and most importantly must be scrutinzed thoroughly to ensure that professionalism is brought to bear. The current process will only attract boot-lickers or perhaps a#@-lickers!

  9. now if democracy is to be effective in Zambia the people have to be alert. The y must continuously keep tack of the activities of those to whom they have entrusted the reins of government. They must to raise a voice against injustice and atrocities. Democracy gives them this height and opportunity. But most important they must perform their functions as citizens faithfully and to the best of their abilities. If an individual is corrupt he cannot accept those in power to be free from corruption. I for one think such an opportunity should not be dished in the hands of the likes of RUPIAH…VOTE FOR SATA!!!!

  10. …But the most important attribute of democracy is that everyone is treated equally before the law, irrespective of caste, creed or sex. Everyone is entitled to freedom of speech, worship, occupation and to move through out the country. The dignity of man is recognized and respected, people are given ample opportunities to become strong and self reliant. For this and many other reasons democracy is more advantageous than other forms of government and best reflects the will of the people in the governance of the country.

People we have a choice in this matter (30th October,2008) VOTE FOR SATA!!! PABWAAAAAAAATOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO>>>>>>

  11. I cant see the connection between the fence, all africa games, the unza/cbu councils. Can some one tell me. I thot the issue of All Africa Games should have been accompanied by an Independence stadium photo to show us what they are doing. Are the games going to be played within unza perimeters or its the stoning age they are afraid of?

  12. one of the members for the cbu council is no eligiable.he does not represent anybody so watch we are coming for you.

  13. where have you been all along Jeff?this is very long overdue!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!viva HHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

  14. RB talks about experience (in corruption and bribery) and continuity (unemployment and poverty). Can someone explain to me please

  15. boyi shetani, i realized that i needed to enroll for seminary before am odained as pastor. so am a student now, will be a real pastor in 3 years time

  16. The two Universities in Zambia. Will the Councillors sort out the problems. The answer is no and a big one at that. What we have tov do is redefine the role of our Universities. A University should spend 80% of its time conducting research and adding to the body of knowledge and 20% teaching students at various levels. If UNZA and CBU were to go this way definately the dependency on Government for stundent fees will deminish as they will be able to raise income from research activities that ultimately they could market and sell to industry. From inception of UNZA and CBU what meaningful research has been undertaken. I am yet to be educated.

We got to change the mind set.

  17. As much as we can appreciate such thinking why now? Lets hope these councils last because people like Lungwangwa are not trust worthy very good at frustrating others.

  18. @ The Spectator!! You are one of the few bloggers who are able to analyze issues critically. I wonder what the outcome would be if you did the same for the pf and their top man…

As for the versity wows disappearing like that upon appoitment of some cousillors is nothing but a pile of dung. The universities in Zambia need to be re-engineered. You will be surprised by this but it is one of the places where you wouldnt expect to find a lot of backward people with phds.

The Governement and private sectors have not done much to help the situation. GRZ could do more to remedy the situation as the major unis are public. They dont seem to understand how education fits in the picture…

  19. While it is appreciated that their oles are clearly spelled out, we need to, however ask the following pertinent questions: Whats the composition of the team of councilors? Who are they? Whats the method of adoption or selection? Whats their tenure of office? All these questions must be answered before pipo have faith in this yet another seeming hole in the national coffers. Lungwangwa tell the nation

  20. Just worsting resoures and what a way of stealing with our eyes wide open….we have really allowered these govt to take us for a ride…MMD BYE,BYE and thanks for stealing our little resoures for the past 17 plus years!

    ALA CHI LUNGWANGWA ULI CIPUUUUBAAAA

  22. What is needed at The UNZA and CBU is to send funding to the instutions – insted of giving money to Nawakwi, Sakwiba, VJ Mwaanga and Tiliyenji Kaunda to use in campaigning for RBB and later allocate them jobs that will deprive of the Nation, Zambians, of the scarce resources.

  23. This is the wrong time to talk about formation of a new council. You have failed to run the ministry of education. As long as i can remember, you havent solved any of the problems facing the two higher learning institutions. All we have seen you doing is to close the universities. Its a shame that you dont even care as if you were not a lecturer at UNZA.Shame!!!!!.Just a piece of advise, u will not be a minister forever. If i were u,i could have utilised this opportunity to iron out problems facing both students and lecturers.who knows! u might end up being a lecturer again.Thats why tulipabwatoooooooooooooooooooo so that u can be kick out of that office.

  24. Where did the first councils go? i think these used to be there but never helped. imwe muposeko amano sana. there is no motivation on these campuses, ah! awe! Guyz, when did Mwanza become a prof?

  25. Can someone tell me how much BC is now? elyo naka Book allowance? Elyo naka Equipment allowance? efyo naletemwa sana. Lets see gud debate on this one ba Monk na Ba Moma imwe! No tupondo tonse iye!!!
