Just pay us, then do whatever you want with NCZ – workers

Nitrogen Chemicals of Zambia, NCZ, workers in Kafue have rejected government’s intended move to recapitalize the firm.

The workers, who have continued their sit-in-protest and are now assembling at the office of the district commissioner in Kafue, say the time for recapitalization is long gone and all they want is their terminal benefits so that they do other things in life.

Addressing workers this morning union chairman Robert Munsanje said a ministerial committee appointed by President Rupiah Banda to look into the problems of NCZ yesterday informed the union leaders who traveled to Lusaka that government had resolved to release K4.8 billion for rehabilitation of the plant and K8.6 billon for paying retirees.

Mr. Munsanje said this was not welcomed by the union as the union is of the view that the funds allocated were inadequate.
He said workers would have been comfortable if government had allocated K150 billion for recapitalization as such an amount would have gone a long way in rejuvenating the company.

Mr. Munsanje said the workers feel paying them their terminal benefits is the best option so that government can do whatever it wants with the plant.

He said since government is comfortable with the private sector supplying fertilizer in the country, it would be a great relief for workers to pay them their benefits so that they can begin looking for work elsewhere.

The workers have vowed not report for work and said they would continue assembling at the District Commissioner’s office until government pays them their terminal benefits.

  1. Lets be careful here guys. We`ve seen this before. All these people want is money so they all go and start business. And, we know the sort of businesses people do, TAXI!

  2. The workers are somehow right! let the goverment pay them their benefits and then RB can invite China , Korea or Nigeria to invest in NCZ! makes much sense! Zoe, can i get nod??? :d

  3. [-o< LT Please us something from the LOCAL COURTS, something on pipo nicking other pipo's missus or men o-+:xplease.

  4. Ha, they have vowed not to go for work. well they have never been going for work since the Chiluba regime time. So it means there not goign for work has never worked. They need to pressurize NyamaSoya to give them their terminal benefits then vote wisely in 2011 not what they did last year. Problems seems to pile up and their closing Lusaka – Mazabuka thru kafue road during their protests has not worked as they are tear gassed time and again.

  5. Whats wrong with this Government, they bring back VJ into Government just to pay for his medical bills when ordinary Zambians who have suffered enough trying to get their terminal benefits keep having a hard life. Give them their money and let VJ die. Even Kafupi should be left to die with that mutima problem. We have suffered enough under these selfish politicians. Viva Kafue workers..we feel for you.

  6. Productivity and efficiency shud be forced down the throat of NCZ workers. Paul Krugman, last year’s Economics Nobel Laureate observed that the Asian Tigers grew through perspiration not inspiration. In Zambia, it seems too many of us are waiting for inspiration.

  7. Give them their monies & if Government wants to recapitalize NCZ it up to the workers to sign or enter into agreement with Government.
As for now pay them they have suffered enough mind you this is rain season have mercy.8->8->8->8->8->8->8-> please!!!!!!

  8. I’m just thinking. Why not go to South Africa say 10 workers from NCZ to go and evict the politicians being feted in Hospital there at tax payers expense. NCZ workers tax, even if they have not been paid their salaries, is being used by the same government to foot & fete these non performing politicians admitted in South Africa.

  9. [-o< LT Please give us something from the LOCAL COURTS,something on pipo nicking pipo's missus or meno-+:x and then :-c tthem in the middle of nite

  10. # 32, Do you like the cases or is it stories or topics from the local courts? am bored don’t know what to do,maybe go to the jobcentre plus and claim benefits cos am fed up with the same stories .BORED.

  11. How much money are we talking about? If it’s ZMK15-20 million being given to LCM miners, then they are better off under a recapitalized firm. At least they will make that amount in a year or less. It’s just not enough to retire on. I just don’t believe the govt. lets companies pay workers patry redundancy packages.

  12. It would be good if these guys have made viable plans for their money. In Luanshya, few mine workers can be found home now.You fight for your money and after getting it, marriage is left in disarray.Word of advice, plan properly with your money so you invest in good businesses not just Nakonde.

  13. #26 – You don’t know how NCZ is managed and why politicians don’t want it to be revived. NCZ workers have seen it before. Do you think Nyama Soya can allow NCZ to be well functioning when he and his friends benefit from supplying fertilizer to ministry of Agric?

  14. It is RB tactics to divert the attention of people from reality. I dont know who inculcated this philosophy in his head. I am sure its those hopeless image builders who thot zed brains are sub thinking. what am pointing out is RB does not address what people want. Last week people in kafue demanded for the cash and Banda instead of responding to the problem he started telling us about Korean investers and others interested in NCZ. what he does not know is that zambia now has a lot of graduates who analyze things. this is my greatest worry people like Cutmashimba and chimuney mulongoti are still in a Grade 7 and Form 3 zambia who can be blackmailed with fake developments.

  15. Sony Ericsson Phiri, i now believe that you are a wise man from eastern province. wenze kulindila kuti unkhale number one. How are you today my good friend? ku heven kuzakawama, we will all be equal. No more ati the rich and the poor, the married and the unmarried. awe mwandi nizee.lets wait and see 8->8->8->8->8->8->8->

  16. If we are serious as a nation we should have by now learnt our lessons from selling the mines. We need to start critically looking at ways of making NCZ answer our Fertilizer needs. Agricultural production suffers every year because of uncertainty regarding where to source and logistical mobilisation. NCZ is an asset.Africans are not ready to rule!

  17. Can RB be focused and address issues not ultering dreams or wishes. he needs to come out of loud thinking and avoid promises that are still in the process. anyway this is wat happens when some one begins to make strategies while in the battle.

  18. when you look at people working for NCZ misery is what you read on their faces.since they haven’t got their benefits one can not know tif Ka FTJ the architect of their misery sold them the houses or not. Again these guys in govt ought to remember that towards the by-election the president himself promised them of better things if he wins and they gave him the vote.now payback time has come instead of action he is giving them melodies. There’s no doubt that maureen mwanawasa will get all the benefits of the husband and these hundreds of families will still be left in the cold like they are asking for a favour.pay them now.

  19. koma yavuta RB velako needed to plan or prepare before hand and test, examine and evaluate his philosophy of rule but RB had no such time. worse more he overlooked the fact that he was just a successor who just needed to carry over. Manje in kaya he has messed up every thing and to recollect is impossible its a point of no return. as i c things are out of control and any honest zedian can confirm.

  20. We need a leadership that can take advantage of our comparative advantage to gun our country forward.we have plenty of rain and rivers running all year long and good weather. As of today all maize silos in the country have been privatised and are run down.So when we have a bumper harvest:no storage and maize goes to waste. The silos actaully require Billions of ZMKs to repair or risk collapsing. Yet storage is part of the whole mechanism. What is it that we can say we are doing right? When we fail we are quick to point to the West.Yet we have the same resources the West had to build their exclusive regimes. We need to hate poverty.

  21. Rashidi I am fine today just a bit busy. Heaven is only at the appointed time… In the meantime we are of this world and we need to do what we can – we must not be cheated that we will enjoy only when reaching heaven, we deserve to enjoy life before death. Simwamene?

  22. This is the problem with parastal companies. The company is supposed to operate as an independent entity and the Board and management are supposed to be responsible for running it profitably.

Managers have failed to run the company and they and their workers want the Government to pay them K150bn from taxpayers. What is the obligation of taxpayers to of a company. I would say let them sell the plant and pay workers their areears of salary and nothing more. Their managers should be paid nothing.

The government should really get out of the business of running companies unless we sign management contracts with professional management firms.

  23. Good decision made by NCZ workers. Get your terminal benfits and let Bwezani and his cronies do what they deem fit for the white elephant which in responsible private hands and without govt interference may (emphasize may) contribute to the Agriculture and GDP of Zambia.

  24. I was in Kafue some two weeks ago. I cud not believe how delapidated that factory is!! To make matters worse, it is just right opposite the Steel Plant whose primary source of material is scrap metal, talk of irony and perfect positioning all rolled in one! Anyway, when the govt said K5bn to re-capitalise it just confirmed to me that we have enough jokers and pranksters as leaders. Let me put it this way, it will be much cheaper to build a new factory from scratch than re-capitalising that Hell-hole!! Give the people what they want!!

  25. The recaptalisation of NCZ is a non starter. The workers are right this time. They have heard that recapitalisation song for too long.Man has to move on not being told rhetoric from overfeed politicians [-([-([-([-(

  26. wel said ladies and gentlemen. Govt should just give those workers their dues! They have suffred enough. Rotten Boog is not fit to be president. We need to get rid of these gangsters, they are no leaders at all.

  27. These people crying for their benefits have no strategy on how to utilise that money..
    tu ntemba tuntemba everywhere….
who is going to buy from who??
    pantu bonse balikwatwa kantemba?? :-@:-t:-j
