Mabenga was not forced to hand over presidency, Katele

Time Posted: February 4, 2009 10:18 am

MMD national secretary, Katele Kalumba has reiterated that MMD national chairman Michael Mabenga was not forced to hand over the acting party presidency to President Banda.

He has advised members to desist from issuing statements on the matter until the National Executive Committee meets.

“As national secretary, I would like to advise members to desist from making statements on the issue of acting party president until the NEC meets on February 7, 2009 as earlier announced,” Dr Kalumba said.

In an interview in Lusaka yesterday, Dr Kalumba said his statement that Mr Mabenga had voluntarily handed over the position of acting party presidency was made after discussions between Mr Mabenga and President Banda and that it was not based on duress.

“My statement was clear that Mr Mabenga voluntarily offered President Banda the position of acting party president and Mr Banda was humbled by the offer and willingly accepted, subject to ratification by the NEC,” Dr Kalumba said.

He said anyone suggesting that Mr Mabenga was forced to hand over the position or that Mr Banda was already acting party president was misrepresenting the statement he issued.

Dr Kalumba said procedure was that NEC would meet and the proposal for President Banda to be ratified as acting MMD presidency would be presented at the meeting for endorsement or rejection.

He said that this did not mean that Mr Banda would be MMD president but that he would be acting party president.

Dr Kalumba said this was because there was no provisions in the MMD constitution for the NEC to elect a party president.

He said an administrative precedent had been set when President Mwanawasa sought the support of former President Dr Chiluba, former MMD Vice-President Enoch Kavindele and former party national chairman, Chitalu Sampa for him to be allowed to act as party president.
He said Dr Mwanawasa was never elected as acting MMD president but was elected president at the MMD national convention.

Dr Kalumba was reacting to party spokesperson, Benny Tetamashimba’s sentiments that there had been perceptions, mostly bordering on lies and misinformation, that Mr Banda had forced Mr Mabenga out.

Meanwhile, Deputy Minister of Science, Technology and Vocational Training Jonas Shakafuswa has advised people calling for disciplinary action against him to use other means of sorting out differences instead of alleged intimidation and threats.

Mr Shakafuswa, who is Katuba member of Parliament, said this in an interview in Lusaka yesterday.
“Things are better sorted out through other means other than intimidation,” Mr Shakafuswa said.

He said Dr Kalumba deserved respect and that it was unfortunate that some MMD officials allegedly did not respect him.

Mr Shakafuswa maintained that Mr Banda was leader for all and not just a few individuals.

I am sick of such kind of politics,Mabenga could have acted till the next convention,it’s plain to see that he’s been bulldozed off the post,it’s not about precedents or anything but it should be about sanity,i guess the plan by a few individuals is to have Banda become acting President so that he is imposed on party members by the time the convention comes,it’s all about the same few individuals serving their jobs,i guess it’s the same bootlickers that Shakafuswa is talking about, they are a bunch of morons who are used to begging & bootlicking, next they will be buttlicking.

Bali balishamo ba Mabenga naimwe. Thats how we play the game pa Zed. He can not just do that wothout getting any favour from akulu mpuno. Soon he will be appointed chairman of some organization or sent abroad for state duties. That how it goes. By the way my young sister is feeling much better although we have not found the culprits yet, police as usual are making empty promises to investigate but in vein

When will this noise going to end in MMD NEC. You won elections you are still tearing each other apart like monkeys fighting over maize. Its time for you guys to seat and plan for the country to forge ahead. RB as acting Party President will be a better position to organise reources for the party unlike any other person NEC.There is nothing wrong for Mabenga to handover position to RB.As for Teta Mulomo, that Chap has always been like that even during his school days at Mwinilunga Sec Sch. Sometimes he talks sense and sometimes he talks ma rubbish. As for the rest of MMD NEC members we need solutions not finger pointing. U store votes and yet not satisfied shame. Shut up Pasopo Nid solutions

    CONTND FROM #8
Moreover, how can they even have a NEC to decide on the matter at State House if that is not imposing someone on the party, the rest of the NEC members should have sat a meeting at the MMD secretariat or elsewhere to hear views of all the members then if they all agree on Banda proceed to imform him of the outcome, not having a meeting at Banda’s office to suggest to NEC members that they should conside him for the top most job, where is democracy.I think it’s high time we had fresh blood in african politics, the UPND has also gone down the drain because one person was imposed on the people, that’s the route that PF will go too.

I pity MMD which spends most of its time quarrelling and defending itself, PF spends most time in court just like Heritage party used to do, RP losing membership etc.

The less time they spend attacking each other, and coming up with all the rubbish, the more time they can spend on solvin the real problems that our country is facing.

We want to here them come up with suggestion on how to solve issues such as
Education, the economy, Heath, employment etc.

If you ask me, Zambia is still a one Party State. Democracy is not working. How can you have a President that wins election by 48%, that should have called for a second round of voting like what happened in Ghana. This story is a clear indication of the corruption at the Heart of MMD and there hold on Power.
