Shikapwasha dismayed by media body’s silence over the story of RB’s SA trip

Share

Information Minister, Ronnie Shikapwasha, said he is disappointed with the media bodies for remaining silent on false and unethical reporting.

He said he is dismayed that the media has not condemned a false story carried by the Post newspaper on President Rupiah Banda’s visit to South Africa.

The story in Wednesday’s Edition of the Post newspaper alleges that South African President Jacob Zuma is not aware of President Banda’s visit.

He said the insults and false stories by the Post newspaper are hurting President Banda’s supporters and the country as a whole.

And the Vice President says the government has come up with draft legislation to regulate the media.

George Kunda has However challenged the media to come up with a blue print of a proposed self regulatory frame-work

He says government maybe compelled to introduce the statutory media regulation if the media fails to regulate itself.

The Vice President challenged the Media to produce a blue print on their proposed self regulation frame work.

Mr. Kunda was speaking at a meeting with media organisation representatives in Lusaka on Thursday

At the same meeting, Parliamentary Chief Whip, Vernon Mwaanga, said parliament is under pressure to enact statutory regulation of the media.

Mr. Mwaanga said people who support self media regulation are being let down by unethical reporting by some media houses.

Earlier, Zambia Union of Broadcasters and Other Information Disseminators-ZUBID- president, Simon Mwila, condemned the use of violence against journalists.

  1. Does it mean day and night we shall only be hearing about RB who is doing noting but touring the the world?“Shikapwasha naimwe be serious, dont run away from serious issues at hand in the country.

  2. George kUNDA should behave like a lawyer or at least use his brains.
He is the same person, who with FJT Chiluba made motor vehicle theft a non-bailable offence just to fix Mactribouy (Vera’s boyfriend).
What type of lawyer are you? Ati ba state counsel- just given by a friend for free.
Please do not regulate the media because tomorrow is coming and you will not be the ruling party.
The government should not be making laws to fix anyone who opposes them.
The Presido was on a private visit hence holding private discussions with Zuma and this is what The Post reported. So, whats all the FUSS about?

  3. THE GOLBAL TROTTER IS NOW BEING SUPPORTED BY THE SHIKI POLOMIA. THE MAN WENT FOR MEDICALS IN THE NAME OF PRIVATE VISIT PERIOD. MEDIA REGULATION ONLY IN TERMS OF CHIWAMINA GALU. SOOONER OR LATER LUPIYA BALANDA AND SHIKI POLOMIA WILL BE IN THE OPPOSITION, THEY WILL NEED THE SAME MEDIA TO UTTER THEIR FRUSTRATIONS.

  4. Mule #3, u should be the advisor to the queen, ulechinshi ku Britain? These people are more of a cabbage than the cabbage we thought .Even the Holy Bible in Revelation has indicated that in the last days there will be fools running Govts and monkeys will be pissing on there heads,

  5. George Kunda is useless. Why should he regulate the media?? Days of dictatorship are long gone wechipuba. Leave Post to say the crap they say after all it works for them, they are the fastest selling newspaper.

  6. Minister Shikapwasha please stop embarrassing us Zambians with “Information Minister, Ronnie Shikapwasha, said he is disappointed with the media bodies for remaining silent on false and unethical reporting“. It is better to keep quiet sometimes that make the International community think that the Zambian MMD GRZ is not a serious ruling system. Just check out BBC and CNN over Mrs Chansa Kabwela’s case story.

The POST provided evidence to their claims that President RB Banda’s visit to South Africa SA was just for something else other than a full government bilateral meeting trip as evidenced by Zambia High Commissioner Leslie Mbula in SA.

  7. Following The POST provided evidence to their claims that President RB Banda’s visit to South Africa SA was just for something else other than a full government bilateral meeting trip as evidenced by Zambia High Commissioner Leslie Mbula in SA. The person to take to task over the President RB Banda sad visit to SA is High Commissioner Mbula L.

He is the one who must explain why he expressed surprise at President RB Banda’s trip to South Africa where he is our high authority over all GRZ and South African government activities.

Have a good day as your reflect on these things and limit embarrassing cheap talk.

  8. Following is what the Post reported:

Asked when President Banda was expected to meet President Zuma,

High Commissioner Mbula asked, “Where is the President right now?”

    “He has taken off?”

Asked about President Banda’s programme while in South Africa,

High Commissioner Mbula responded: “I think that I am not very sure yet. Maybe after he has come when I have seen the programme, maybe you can phone. Then we can discuss.”

President Banda on Tuesday left for South Africa where he was expected to hold “bilateral talks” with President Zuma.

Does this warrant regulating the media???

I will be back as Home is Home and I miss it so much having been away for a while.
Thanks to LT, we will always be updated and in touch.

  10. Zambia deserves credible and responsible self regulated media institutions be they private or publicly run. One thing for sure is not the gutter low grade tabloid that has infiltrated the ethical media professional domain. Democracy comes with responsibility while freedom is not absolute where responsibility has evidently been relegated to impunity and anarchy agenda. Case in point is in the US where freedom reign high as a virtue, yet proponents of the Same-Sex Marriage and queer theorists have legislative restraints in many states treasuring Judea Christian values. In Zambia we are a country of legal codes and morality. Responsibility and culture are our enduring norms.

  11. While Dialectic and constructive criticism are democratic, insults are unacceptable reproach. Insulting our mothers as prostitutes is an abomination, a reproach, is filthiness, is perverse, is evil, is deceitful, and is corruptible iniquity without space in our democracy. As such, the Zambian democratic spirit dictates that we can live without any “poison Chalice “as only the Lord God almighty is the indispensable one without whom life is impossible.

  12. No one takes pleasure in a culture of violence started and inculcated in politics by Sata from his failed third term crusade in Chawama. President Banda, the ruling MMD, and indeed all patriotic citizens have the commitment to a free and stable tolerant Zambia. This is why they have censured the Haka/Sata crusade calling to make Zambia ungovernable. But every profession and citizen has a responsibility to checkmate impunity and foster responsible democracy. Such a strong democracy is what our children envision to grow in and take over. Hatred and lies begets hatred. The nation wins if it unshackles itself from a culture of impunity pursued by a manifest of impostors in the noble profession in the name of any liberalism and freedom. 13. No one takes pleasure in a culture of violence started and inculcated in politics by Sata from his failed third term crusade in Chawama. President Banda, the ruling MMD, and indeed all patriotic citizens have the commitment to a free and stable t-o-l-e-r-a-n-t (co-existing) Zambia. This is why they have censured the Haka/Sata crusade calling to make Zambia ungovernable. But every profession and citizen has a responsibility to checkmate impunity and foster responsible democracy. Such a strong democracy is what our children envision to grow in and take over.

  14. Hatred and lies begets hatred. The nation wins if it unshackles itself from a culture of impunity pursued by a manifest of impostors in the noble profession in the name of any liberalism and freedom. Where there is no Moses, a Joshua will be there with responsibility for the common Good.

  15. Democracy wins when the media is ethical and resigned itself to issued based reporting instead of the increasing media myths and falsehoods unethical Zambian tabloid journalism has settled for.

  16. Iwe chishikapwasha ubukopo, where in the world have u ever seen the media condemn each others stories? the media only informs the public whats going on when they gather news from sources…what kind of information minister are u?

  17. No one in the media circle can talk back at the POST….they all fear mmembe. He can insult and print all kind of unprintables as he wishes. But let ANYONE push his scribes around and the whole nation prepares to march to state house in protest….All these so called NGOs like TIZ,Women lobby fimofimo worship mmembe so much that he feels UNTOUCHABLE….He really fools himself and those around him too…!

  18. 11 greetings. On your “High Commissioner Mbula asked, “Where is the President right now?”

    “He has taken off?”
” reported by the POST, I am afraid the High Commissioner Mr Leslie Mbula did not ask a question and confirmed that Mr President RB Banda had actually taken off. If Mr South African High Commissioner meant the above words as a question by the tone of his voice, then his English Language command is weak for the correct question would have been: Has he [President RB Banda] taken off?
Otherwise, it appears the POST journalist and editor(s) failed to report correctly on this one. Sad Engish is this difficulty. _

  19. If you want free speech to disappear in Zambia, please support this nonsense these animals are trying to bring in Zambia. Zambia since independence has enjoyed free speech, freedom of the press (though for some time, the media was in the pockets of the govt) hence the culture you see in the rantings of Mr. Ben Kangwa AKA Senior Citizen. He has never enjoyed freedom of the Press having worked at ZNBC were he was even told not to play Spokes Chola’s controversial songs. The all Kaunda era was run using State of Emergency which in essence limited our rights. RB, the product of the same era and one of the supporters and beneficiaries of the same does not what to see Zambians enjoy what others enjoy in the Western World. Zambians, be careful what you as for. Some laws can’t be reversed.

  20. .
Maestro Hakucincha How are you doing my friend? Which evidence did the Post provide? the headline was ZUMA NOT AWARE OF RUPIAHS TRIP. According to evidence who was not aware? is it Zuma? is it Mbula? or is it ZUMAs officials? if you have evidence that Zuma told the post that he is not aware then i will rest my case. Everywhere in the world the Media is briefed on presidential activities on a “Need to Know Basis” it is impossible for a presidential private Jet to land on foreign soils without the knowledge of that country’s head of state.Assuming the SA govnt was not aware about his trip do you think he was goping to book a Cab from the airport to where ever he was going? The fact that SA gvnt protocal officials waited for him at the airport is evidence enough of appointment.

  21. Chiwamila Galu kuluma mbuzi not mbuzi kuluma galu (Unless its them dioing that then it was going to be alright but because its their friends such will always be the complints)

  22. Senior Citizen, iyo yama waliba panchinto. Who trained you? You are surpassing Bwendo Mulengela your mentor? After Hone, did you also train under the colorful Al-Sahhaf (Baghdad Bob) known for his daily press briefings in Baghdad during the 2003 Iraq War. Or are you guys still communicating? Your language sounds like his.

  23. 24Engines greetings and I am fine thanks. On your “ Which evidence did the Post provide? the headline was ZUMA NOT AWARE OF RUPIAHS TRIP. According to evidence who was not aware? is it Zuma? is it Mbula? or is it ZUMAs officials?“, please access the POST on that story for it is free and you do not need to worry about log in and you will find that the President Zuma officials including Zambian High Commisioner Mbula did not know about President RB Banda’s so-called official bilateral meeting visit.
As for “… SA gvnt protocal officials waited for him at the airport is evidence …, please be serious as a Director for Southern Africa internation Affairs is nothing to receive a President of Zambia for a receiving Minister of something was going to be better.

  24. 24Engines. Following As for “… SA gvnt protocal officials waited for him at the airport is evidence …, please be serious as a Director for Southern Africa internation Affairs is nothing to receive a President of Zambia for a receiving Minister of something was going to be better. Any Further defence on President RB Banda’s actions is thus a waste of time and meant to embarrass Zambians especially President RB Banda more.
So, relax on it as you are going President RB Banda dis-service by making uneducated weak submissions. Such behaviour by you is very sad as it only makes our Head of State look like he is being cheated.
    _
1 John 2:21 I have not written unto you because ye know not the truth, but because ye know it, and that no lie is of the truth.

  25. Hi bakalamba well these guys have taken us for granted. We the people of zambia want the media to be free. You guys want the news to be regulated so that you start hiding things from our ears. NO TWAKANA. And on the sale of the 75% share of Zamtel why not Sale the 75% shares of ZNBC they are doing Nothing watching things over and over again.

  26. Physicist Maestro Hakucincha. with all due respect i doubt your knowledge of govnment operations. you seem to be confusing a state visit and a presidential visit. you remind of someone who argued that the south african govnt was not aware because there was no 21 gun salute. ” please be serious as a Director for Southern Africa internation Affairs is nothing to receive a President of Zambia for a receiving Minister of something was going to be better” So as far as you know who is the chief govnt protocal officer in a ministry?by the way Xiliso Makaya is a very approprate figure to receive a head of state being a celebrated Diplomatic security and intelligence officer.

  27. 30 Engines. Following your “ with all due respect i doubt your knowledge of govnment operations. you seem to be confusing a state visit and a presidential visit” what ever your doubts, I do not care but know that I have never worked for GRZ or any other government and I am only 29 years old. Just to open your eyes, would it be sensible for Zambia to send a Director of something in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to receive South African President Jacob Zuma if he comes to visit the Victoria Falls?
So, continue in embarrassing Mr Zambian President as you appear to be sent by some useless character at analysins issues. Have a blessed day.
    _
1 John 2:21 I have not written unto you because ye know not the truth, but because ye know it, and that no lie is of the truth.

  28. To all you sent men, you should be grateful to the POST who alerted the South African governemnet of President RB Banda’s sad visit to South African by asking them good questions that probably forced the South African government to use our first (former) President K.D. Kaunda’s good work to save the face of President RB Banda so that he does ot appear as a liar by sending a Director Xiliso Makaya in a Ministry to receive our President. By the way, who from the Zambian government received the (North Korean) Vice President and his delegation when they came to visit Zambia’s Victoria Falls some few years ago? A Director?
    Have a blessed day.

1 John 2:21 I have not written unto you because ye know not the truth, but because ye know it, and that no lie is of the truth.

  29. Iwe ci senior citizen
Kanshi how does your brain process data? Every time you post a comment on this blog we know its upside even before reading the first sentence. One advice to you mate, your mission is fruitless spend your time efficiently. If you read the Post article you wouldn’t be as daft to agree with Shikapwetette’s sentiments. The Post contacted the South African Government to verify whether RB was actually be awaited by Zuma because firstly we do not trust him and secondly he’s spending our money flying flying around with Siliya every time he’s bored.

  30. Hear we go again, moving away from the story. Yes the POST were not top on here and the POST has on numerous occasions attacked other media institutions when thrre err. As the trip to SOUTH AFRICA, it was never called a state visit it was just announced that the President will be going there for review and will hold talks with Zuma. And that indeed happened, now the POST like normal sensionalised the situation. As for who received him, I am not conpetent to talk on that because my knowledge of protocol is limited. But i know that on many occasion Mwanawasa travelled around and no notable person received espeacially in Europe ( England to be specific) and the USA. come on people lets not just be blinded by dissaproval

  31. Guess what ! Zuma didn’t know anything about his visit and as matter of urgency they had to fix him an appointment with Zuma. Do you received him when he touched down in S.A? it wasn’t Zuma, not his vice- President, not his cabinet minister, but a District commission equivalent.

  32. South African officials are tired of receiving RB so i don’t blame them for sending a DC equivalent. By the way Senior citizen, EASY, ADVISER and POSITIVIST PA ZED is the same person having a tough time dealing with middle age crisis. Am one of the longest blogging commentators here so i know him quite well.

  33. There is more to it than the eye can see, firstly why didn’t Mr.Shikapwasha inform the nation that besides meeting MR.Zuma the presido was also going for medical review? Secondly, why didn’t MR. S not inform the Zambian high commisioner over the presido’s visit to South Africa(this is normal protocal).Lastly, is it such a difficult thing to inform the nation that the Presido is not well? for as much as I know Zambians they will quickly put on their christian hats and wish him quick recovery. Please stop gossip Mr. S but telling the nation the truth.Quick recovery Mr.Presido

  34. oH AND ON THE ISSUE OF regulation, I am entirely against statutory regulation but i think some self regulation would be welcome. The press are a powerful tool who need to act responsibly. That is not to say they should not criticise, no. they should develop some form of guidelines in which to operate as do most other cardial groupings

  35. 30 Engines I had to take a shower and now I am back just be I leave for the offices. On your “So as far as you know who is the chief govnt protocal officer in a ministry?by the way Xiliso Makaya is a very approprate figure to receive a head of state being a celebrated Diplomatic security and intelligence officer“.
Funny question indeed and just to let you know, I have as a (Zambian) student equally met the Director of Science and Technology in South Africa and dined with him; now does that fact make me equal with Mr Zambia President RB Banda — who claims to have been Acting President of Namibia? Please, stop msleading us.
    _
1 John 2:21 I have not written unto you because ye know not the truth, but because ye know it, and that no lie is of the truth.

  36. Continuing on Please, stop msleading us. Following 39 Touched ‘s contribution and that news that surrounded late (former) President LP Mwanawasa’s death, remember that the Zambian GRZ caused then South African President Thabo Mbeki to apologise for having state that Mr Mwanawasa LP had died when our Zambian government led by then Vice President RB Banda refuted the death allegations.
Such encounters and further lies may worsen Zambia’s relations with South Africa and thus we as Zambians need to be careful and avoid misleading President RB Banda who I suspected had a lot of experience not to make weak mstakes but age seems tricky.
    _
1 John 2:21 I have not written unto you because ye know not the truth, but because ye know it, and that no lie is of the truth.

  37. Whilst I dont agree with sensationalist reporting based on self-interest as evidenced by the Post, I think it is dangerous for the govt to start thinking about regulating the media at this juncture in our history. The govt should be thick skinned and let their achivements or otherwise speak for themselves. Whilst it might be uncomfortable to be insulted on a daily basis, being seen as a country with a free press is itself an extremely valuable asset.

  38. #38 POSITIVIST PA ZED
Respond to what coment you muppet? Not every Zambian is as daft as you think. You and your father RB can still votes from villagers and force them to sing and dance naked but you won’t be able to do it with us. Infact the more you post your comments the more we hate your party that includes RB. You’re becoming more $tup1d by the day, is there a school for $tup1dity in USA

  39. Shikapwasha has nothing to say. The paper has gather news using its own method and dissemnet. If they have to come with cathing headlines. As GRZ official Gen Shika has other important things to tell us rather than responding to whatever the Post writes about RB. MORE is written about GRZ coz there is no transparency in the way certain matters are handled. Bwana Gen Ronnie what has gone wrong with you. We need you as Chief GRZ spokesman to be informing the nation policy matters and how they will be implemented not otherwise.

  40. #44 mala msana, Please don’t waste your precious time with bootlickers like Positivist Pazed and senior citizen, they don’t use their brains.

  41. The man was visibly annoyed and unforunately GK was agreeing with what ba Ronnie with his humble education making him not good at analysing issues was nodding his head in agreement, then came this political archive who was speaking louder than his feable self in the name of VJ. These guys are certianly out of ideas on how to deal with the press and they are certainly so scared of 2011 that they would rather run a dictatorship than develop the country so that the press goes easy on them. This might as well be he worst Government zambia has ever had, whereas Fredo was stealing without openly intimidating people, this General surely is running Information Ministry like ZAF.

  42. Both blogger # 46 Come 2011 and the insulting mala msana, you are too anoyed that you can never see anything but blood. As for you msana tone dowm your language , to write like that while it is your right is to be like the hoolihans who attack journalists. You call me stupid and so say you hate MMD, that does not impact on the discussion at all. If i remember correctly the Govt statement was originally that RB was going to RSA and will hold bilateral talks and have a reveiew. And that is what occured as for the who received I have said that I am ot competent to comment because I do not know who is supposed to receive a head of state goin for what I believe can be coined a private visit.

  43. George kunda, what a mess! This is same guy who has never seen a woman’s pussy?
The guy is a joke. One day you will need these media people, and no one will be there for you. Chimbokaila is waiting for you. Remember how you treat your friends in the opposition, those unbailable offenses will also be upon you someday. A vulture is a patient bird, hence we are patiently waiting for you.

  44. Let me go on. Shikapwasha in his meeting with the press also expressed GOVT displeasure with the POST and asked why they were not criticised. In attendance there were people from MISA and other papers.Lets agree that as spoke person and Minister he was making a govt position and ofcourse it is expected that G. As for statutory regulation as I said I do not surport it but I would like to see some self regulation and this is not just for the POST but also for the Govt media. I still find the POST to be the most informative paper but there is need as with everything in life to constantly self assess and this process in done better in a larger group with similar interests.I strongly want the ZNBC act to be implemented

  45. Now the fact that we dissagree does not call for name calling. As human beings our positions are bound to differ and lets do this in a civilised manner.

  46. Precisely #49, someone I think OBama said I am more likely to listen to you when you disagree with me than if you agreed, and that is basiaclly what it is. Fred Mmembe has money and they think his motivation to write the way he rights comes from the fact that he is rich, this is the shallow kind of leadership we are trying to question, CNN questions everything that Obama does even killing a fly was headline news in CNN international, what more being urinated upon by a monkey. Why are they paying attention to the Post if the Post is bluffing, there should be some truth in what the post is saying. Since when is someone’s face in a poltical rally, how can Rupiah say Sata is ugly, the last time I remember that kind of reference to a human being was in 1860 when some guy was campaigning …

  47. … against Lincoln. And didn’tthe President say something like “Ubufi Bwakunya” it is this kind of loose talk that puts Shikapwasha and his Government in the firing line.

  48. i look into my crystal ball and i see a police state and riots and Rb not givin a hoot and blamin it all on the opposition and GK blabbing sh!t and not givin a sh!t and Teta blabbin sh!t and not givin a sh!t and RB grinnin and not givin a sh!t and blamin it on the opposition and declaring a state of emergency and unleashing the red barrets and reliving 1986 and curfew and arrests and detentions and goin back to south for his knee coz dora tried sumthin new and totally effed his knee and still not givin a sh!t that the streets are littered with burnt out cars and exhausted gas cannisters….’its just a phase, happens in a lot of countries’ he tells himself and continues not to give a sh!t. nobody thats supposed to give a sh!t does! even if they did, they aint cleva enuff 2 do anything

  49. One question for Ronnie: What is more dismaying? The Media’s silence over RBs trip or RB uttering words like ” Ubufi Wakunya”?

  50. Its appears even the bloggers have joined politicians in the art of insults. Where are we hewading to. Lets use good words that will make them understand. The more use bad language the more stuborn these fellows will become. What has happened to Ben Teta and Mike Mulo. Are they some where attending treatment or not coz I have not heard from them. Have they run out of ideas or not. Further can someone explain to me why Kabinga Pande (MOF) was left behind when RB went to South Africa. This tells us that the trip was purely priavte. May be on medical grounds

  51. Does Shikapwasha want every newspaper to follow the ZNBC praise singing style of reporting. ZNBC Radio and TV are among the most backward and usesless in the world. They are just there for propaganda. It would be a tragedy if every media house in Zambia adopted ZNBC’s way of doing things.

  52. # 23 kindly confirm if Senior Citizen is Ben Kangwa ! ALTENATIVELY, Senior Citizen confirm if indeed you are Ben Kangwa!

As for red lipped snake and his fellow bootlickers, let them learn from MPOMPO who quickly realised that it does not pay to be a bootlicker than to be real.

  53. it sonly a fool who can agree with what Shikapwasha is saying. are we still in the one party participatory fimo fimo. why should the media live a life of Simon says jump and they ask how high? The post was dead right RB never had appointment with Zuma. He imposed himself on JZ. If they had a meeting they (papers) would have written about it. it wasnt even a filler in any of the critical papers in RSA . according to the prog zuma was free on that day and has a meeting with H Clinton today or tomorrow and address the women on womens day on sunday that was the only commitment he had for the week. Kudos the POST

  54. Ala chapwa pa zed GRZ wants to fully control the media. What will be next. Be very scared people. This is not good.

  55. Do these people know that they are public figure (or diagrames so to say). They should be concious of their moves (what they do or say) or else people/media will cash in on it. Is it dumbness or bufontini fye? I honestly dont understand

  56. What can one say??? Its clear that this MMD-gonvt is rejected by the people of Zambia. Every human being starting from our grands, our parents, spouses, us children, children children and those in the wombs have rejected this MMD-govnt. If I were RB I would immediately resign. THIS IS A TABOO IT HAS NEVER HAPPENED IN THE HISTORY OF ZAMBIA THAT A GOVNT WAS REJECTED BY ALL PEOPLE.

  57. Shika fimo fimo, the media is not reporting RBs travels cos the pipo as a whole are not intrested in RBs glob troting, so do what ever you like. It is not news any more cos RB is always on the move.

  58. But the government can simply take the post to court. Not even government is infallible we are all under the law after government is the people of Zambia Sir. The post should not lie, who knows who is lying? Even judges are taken to court. A Crown court judge was arrested for drink driving this month in the United Kingdom. The court as an employer has fired him as he resigned on his own. But the police have charged him which is the right thing to do…Its up to the courts. many leaders still dont realise how we all fall under the same law and keep on passing on mixed messages to the nations and generations to come.
