The opposition caused the violence in Chitambo, newly elected MP

Share

WINNING MMD Chitambo Member of Parliament Solomon Musonda has condemned the violence which marred the recent polls and placed the blame on the intolerance of the opposition.

But Patriotic Front (PF) spokesperson, Given Lubinda said the violence was perpetrated by the MMD and it was unfair for Dr Musonda to accuse the opposition of having created problems.

Dr Musonda challenged those in doubt to confirm with the police and courts of law in Serenje as to which party complained about violence and which political party cadres had been punished.

He observed that all the incidences of violence reported to the police in Chitambo were instigated by members of the opposition PF-UPND pact, FDD or UNIP cadres against the ruling party.[quote]

He said that it was regrettable that an impression was being created by some sections of the media to show that it was MMD cadres who perpetuated violence when in actual fact it was the other way round.

Dr Musonda said PF leader Michael Sata was on two occasions allegedly ejected from MMD campaign camps after he deliberately strayed with scores of his cadres while in another incident, Lusaka Mayor Stephen Chikwelete was at the centre of controversy.

He said in the case of what he called the highly misunderstood saga involving Deputy Minister in the office of the Vice- President Gaston Sichilima, it was UNIP cadres who instigated the fracas which was witnessed by observers from the Anti-Voter Apathy Project.

“What I find unfortunate is that these opposition political parties with some reporters are deliberate and calculated in the manner they create these so called scenes of violence making sure that the images and stories they propagate to the nation puts the ruling party in bad light when that was not the case at all,

Those who were perpetuating these acts of violence are the PF-UPND pact, records are at the police stations to prove this, I challenge anyone to prove otherwise, we need to be extremely careful about these lies,” Dr Musonda said.

He added that the courts had actually sentenced a PF-UPND cadre for violence while an FDD cadre was still being held for maliciously shattering a PF campaign vehicle.

  1. the MMD thugs are very much synonymous with the once untouchable castro chiluba who even when he was the aggressor, the police instead reprimanded the victims. days are numbered boy!

  2. Congratulationz Hon. MP, this iz no time to talk about who did or didn’t do what.Your task now should be to bring people together, regardless of their affilliation, for harmonizd and enhanced development. Don’t hurt people any more than they already are.

  3. some people are already showing how useless they are. Has someone forgotten a minister was fight a cadre less than 5 days ago??

  4. Some half brains have buried their heads in sand and forgotten the violent nature of SATA.you *****s, you will all be bruised if this man tested power.you are so silly that in the quest to removing MMD and rupiah from power you are courting even the most dangerous that to have ever graced the zambian political scene.mukanya no kunya

  5. Chitambo – A Political Revelation(Guest Blog)

Previously internet based polls gave the pact a landslide victory whilst bloggers claimed a revolution was underway(imaginary). Yet, the end result from the ground showed that faith in the individual political parties was much higher than the faith the people had in the pact. “The euphoric strategy of the opposition pact created a false impression of magnanimous support and completely ignored the voter who wanted his individual issues to be addressed”.

  6. The opposition got lost in the euphoria and failed to convince the voter majority that it can deliver on its promises. “Internet users and bloggers were misled by the private press who deliberately created a picture of a revolution where there was none”. The pact fell apart as campaign teams from the two leading opposition parties ignored their leaders’ directives and began to campaign for their own presidential candidates for the 2011 general election. In this confusion, their leaders followed suit and started campaigning for themselves instead of directing their attention to unity and solidify the pact.

  7. The conscientious approach to attending to the individual voter gave the ruling MMD the edge it needed to retain its seat and consequently brought doubt to the idea of the pact as an alternative government in waiting. “The damage to the popularity of the MMD caused by the threat of the opposition pact, as depicted by the tabloid, was completely nullified.

  8. The MMD could not match the vigour exhibited by the pact and it chose a very different approach to retaining its seat. The party mobilized its campaign team in Chitambo and went on a quiet door-to-door campaign to convince voters that MMD is the only party capable of delivering on its promises within the current economic constraints. The campaign team attended to each voter religiously addressing their immediate demands and future expectations. The ruling party’s team developed and implemented their campaign programme with an anthropological approach at the lowest possible level putting the registered voter in Chitambo first. They knew that the key to winning the election was the individual voter and that a highly organized and skilled door-to-door campaign was required to assure the…

  9. They knew that the key to winning the election was the individual voter and that a highly organized and skilled door-to-door campaign was required to assure the voters’ pen their vote the MMD way. This was the only successful strategy they had against the euphoric strategy of mob psychology of the opposition pact.

By midday on the 14th of August, UPND/PF’s pact candidate polled 1,803 votes (32.23%) while the ruling MMD’s candidate polled 3,149 votes (56.29%). MMD had retained its seat in Chitambo and increased its popularity by 2.47% after nine and a half months, whilst the UPND/PF pact popularity fell by 11.94% from 44.17% in October 2008.

  10. This time round the pact ruthlessly embarked on a campaign to woo voters by ferrying campaign teams from Lusaka in order to organize huge rallies and assuring the press was there for every triumphant moment of the tour. Chitambo saw more out-of-town vehicles than ever before and the residents probably did not understand why so much attention was being given to this very small constituency. The MMD campaigned in a dozen brand new vehicles still unregistered while the opposition ferried its campaign organizers and cadres in several light trucks and busses chanting slogans and urging the electorate to rally behind their cause. Chitambo was the centre of all press coverage and momentum grew as the polling day drew closer.

  11. If elections were held today.the MMD will still win.and if we want to dislodge the MMD from power we should first of all acknowledge that there is no revolution in the country apart from the same noise coming from the urban ares.secondly we should stop relying on propaganda being perpetrated by some private media painting the MMD as a party in a free fall.thirdly we should get from the picture old villains like sata because they dont offer hope and a big section of the population are not content with their characters.so as long we dont address the points i have raised MMD will still be in goverment come 2011.the voting parten in the country hasn’t changed at all.regions are still polarised in the same way they have been voting.

  12. Ka Musonda just concentrate on fufilling your compaign promises instead of yapping even when deep down your heart you know that you are a product of the vilent and rigged elections ! We kanangwawee!!

  13. 7-14 Guest Blogger- Where are are you based? If you are in Zambia you wouldnt be writing all these. The voting pattern in rural Zambia is basically tribal. Sata cannot win in LALA land and especially that the LALAs have their own George Kunda as VP. I have friends from Serenje who have switched to MMD because of George is VP. These are facts not a thesis to help you pass an exam

  14. Ka Solo isala mukanwa ala. Dont you start opening your mouth any how. you are too new in the game for you to start bubling about things you dont know. It seems you have been brain washed already. Basopo!

  15. Tell him, bloggers, tell him! He thinks he is now part of the elite. That’s the problem with Zambian politics, people think they’re big potatoes whenever they get into parliament. Mwanya!! Time is a mother!

  16. Guest Blogger, You have your facts or is it opinon mixed up, You sound like another Teta who talks without thinking. Everyone knows that Chitambo is home of the VP and can not be used as a proper bases of Judging the pact. What about all the wards the MMD never won. Those are the results which tells the true story as to what is happening at the grassroots. Wake up, MMD is about to go into a self made oblivion.
It’s people like you who makes RB belive he is popular.

  17. As for Musonda, please you have been elected as MP (Dubiously of cause) It’s time you make good of your campaign promises, dont get involved in cheap politics of blaming and misinformation. be an objective Doctor. I hope you have’n’t started yapping early so that you get appointed as a Minister fast.

  18. #19 THUNDERBOLT

You have a point there. Chitambo was our strong hold and anybody who thought we would lose that seat was indeed out of their mind. Needless to say the PACT tried to see if they could win in Chitambo, but they have tested the water and now now that MMD will hold onto our strong holds.

Now it is our turn to test the waters in the opposition stronghold in Kasama. We shall give it our best. We are already in Kasama doing ground work and we are treating this as a true 2011 elections and we believe we can pull this one off. We shall deploy and camp all our big guns there to secure this seat. The we shall took. Winning Chitambo was no big deal. Kasama will be big deal and we are pulling all stops to secure this seat. You watch the space. In MMD we mean business.

  19. If MMD wins Kasama, then I know for sure that come 2011 MMD will be in power, If The pact wins, it won’t be the best litmus test for it’s popularity as it is a well known fact that it’s PF strong hold, Eastern, Western and Northwestern seats are and will provide the best test as for what 2011 will hold for the pact and MMD. Too bad Teta is doing fine, we would have used his seat as a test seat.

  20. We all know that Chitambo is an MMD stronghold. However, if the opposition have any chance of forming the next govt, then they have to start winning seats like Chitambo. If you read some blogs on LT, you would think that Zambia is in a worse state than Somalia. Surely if it is that bad then the opposition should be winning MMD strongholds hands down?

  21. # 26 – You mention north-west province and to me this is an example of how PF has been short-sighted in the past. Chishimba Kambwili insulting and alienating Luvales does not help the PF or pact or whatever cause especially in the light of the new economic invest the province has seen under the MMD govt.

  22. # 27 Winning seats like Chitambo for the Pact would signal the end of the MMD era, for now as I said above the present by elections are not the best indicators of what is to come, for sure the Pact will win Kasama. If the Pact lost that seat, then MMD is here to stay. but as we all know, thats not possible, the laws of Zambian politics does not allow such a thing to happen. So what do we look at? Simple from the previous elections, if we go by those indicators, then it’s bye bye MMD come 2011

  23. Shikapwasha ali mu cibe with the catholic church. Maybe Kanitundila should relieve him of his portfolio so that he can go to the Vatican to defend himself berfore the Pope for spreading malicious lies about the Holy See. He should be given an opportunity toproof the Post was selective, to show course why he should not be thrown into hell to burn. You know, I was in the ZAF with that chap and we used to call him “two chicken” because I swear he could swallow two who “munkombwes” in one session. Let’s see how he will swallow the Catholic Church.

  24. I like the “But Patriotic Front (PF) spokesperson, Given Lubinda said the violence was perpetrated by the MMD and it was unfair for Dr Musonda to accuse the opposition of having created problems“. To this end, I will wait for the PACT to live upto the challenge.

    All the best all.

  25. Musonda does not trust media reports.

How can we trust you ba Doc.
His story is a media report
Therefore Musonda can not trust his own story.

  26. # 31 Thunderbolt Kambwili insulted people from Nort-western province. He said bakalubale balasongola ameno ……..

  27. Please bloggers try to remmember that almost each one contributing on this blog is a Zambian. This kind of hatred I see will eventually destroy our country. We can not even debate objectively. All you see on the blog is insults as if we are insurgents aginst an illegal gevernment. Let us learn some civility. We are not at war.

  28. “Chiluba ali mukakubila”

THE fate of former Republican president Federick Chiluba over corruption charges he is facing is still yet to be known as the judgment is currently being read out in court.

The judgment being delivered by Ndola High Court Registrar Johns Chinyama, sitting as a magistrate, was deferred from Friday to today after the court indicated that it was not ready to deliver judgment last week.

Chiluba’s corruption case closed in March this year and judgment was set for July 20.

In this matter, Chiluba is separately charged with Kabwe and Aaron Chungu for theft by public servant, involving about US $500,000 public funds.

The Post Online will keep you informed immediately the verdict is passed.

  29. Self-inflicted defeat by the oppostion. These guys are jokers.I wonder if they have strategists.Even if they had one,Sata will never listen to them.

  30. #36 .I support you, Kusongola meno has never been an insult in the history and culture of The Luvales. It makes the Luvales unique. In an era of Tribal politics going on in zambia, any statement or coment made on a tribal becomes a big issue. The policy is DIVIDE,SPLIT AND RULE…
