Mansa residents prefer traditional methods of child spacing

Share

The health sector in Mansa says modern family planning methods have dropped in the area because people preferred practicing traditional methods of child spacing.

This came to light yesterday during the Behavioral Change Communication (BCC) re-orientation workshop for Community Based Distributors (CBD) and Safe Motherhood Action Groups (SMAGs) which was organized by UNFPA in Mansa yesterday.

Giving a presentation on the importance of Family Planning, Senama Clinic Health Center staffer Marriet Mwale said that people are not in support of modern family planning methods which are a big challenge for the health institution.

Mrs. Mwale said that most women were not allowed to practice modern family planning by their spouses and resorted to traditional methods such as taking of marijuana seeds while others were using concoctions to prevent pregnancies.

She said that there were a lot of myths and beliefs surrounding the use of modern family planning which included the fear of contracting the HIV/AIDS virus because communities believe that injectable contraceptives contain the virus that causes AIDS.[quote]

She further said people also believe that contraceptive pills causes barrenness in women, continuous menstrual periods and that the pills allegedly caused cancer.

She added that on the use of condoms as a mode of contraceptive couples were not keen because they felt that there was no sexual satisfaction and that rural people believed that condoms were for those who are infected with the HIV/AIDS virus.

Mrs. Mwale explained that Senama Clinic with a catchment area of over 25 000 people has had about 754 women accessing antenatal clinic services between January and August 2009 adding that a total of 148 had tested HIV positive.

Mrs. Mwale said that 25% of the women accessed modern family planning adding the rest shunned the practices of family planning.

And Mansa UNFPA program officer Joyce Chabala said there was need to sensitize the communities on the importance and benefits of family planning.

Mrs. Chabala family planning reduced the risk of maternal deaths and that government wanted had put in place the policy of family planning in the health sector because women had the right to good health before, during and after giving birth.

  1. 1984 should help us allay or justify fears that injectable contraceptives such as Depo Provera may contain the virus that causes AIDS. It was in the papers last year.

  2. Nothing is wrong with the traditional means when it comes to family planning coz that how our ancestors have been managing to plan families for centuries, accually i can give an example of ancient egypt where cow dung was once used as a contraceptives in the days of the pharaohs. So lets not look down upon traditional means now coz someone wants us to believe that his laboratory can produce something better and safer than what our fore fathers have had used

  3. if traditional methods still achieve the purpose of child spacing, then why discourage them. Reasons rised above for avoiding the modern ways of family planning are real, modern family planning can cause cancer, can also lead into barrenesss in some women etc.
How about weed seeds, how do they work? any one with info on this, interesting, never knew that weed can have such uses!

  4. The DEC must stop prosecuting people found with Marijuana because of its proven medicinal value in a variety of diseases including its efficacy in the care of HIV/AIDS patients.

  5. Modern methods really do have those side effects of prolonged menstrual periods dont know about the cancer and anyway if the traditional works why not even promote it. Ba DEC landenipo…..we have a marijuana boom

  6. Who even discovered the ganja formula? This is the complete use of the stuff. Men are smoking the weed and women the seed. Please do put the seed to extinction otherwise will not have the seed come rains. Can someone tell me how it is administered by women, do they just push it in or what?

  7. Live and Withdrawal is always da best (that’s if you are man enough to pull out of the sweetest thing on earth at the most pleasurable moment). You actually kill 2 birds with one stone, no 3 actually. The pleasure, the cum and no pregnancy. DAMN!

  8. well if the traditional way is working well and good tell us how it is deon so that we call doctor manda to mordenise the medicin or konkoction,

  9. Instead of sensitizing them on these modern pills & them use that money to find out more about the traditional ways, they might just be a solution. after all they are already accepted by the locals.

  10. #15, Hi Monalisasyndrome and greetings…
Yes ganja weed is ‘creepy’ crap.. I work in the hospital environment… you should see the worst effects of marijuana on human oblangata, forget google and come back to me mate…….

  11. IS IT BECAUSE THERE IS NO MUCH ENTERTAINMENT PACKAGE IN MANSA? HEY MAYBE IT IS ONE WAY OF ADVERTISING A MASS EXPORT OF WEED TO JAMAICA. LET ME NEGOTIATE THE PRICE FOR U. MWERU COMRADES

  12. #17. Thenji Stevens(Mrs). Everything in life is all about moderation. It you take too much Nshima( ubwali) in one sitting, you shall definitely fall sick. The issue here is the quantity of weed one takes(dosage) and the purpose for its use. You cannot take away the fact that weed is an aphrodisiac and it improves appetite in chronically ill patients. Surely, are these but only two examples not enough to convince you of the medicinal value of ganja?

  13. #19, Monalisasyndrome,
No, is my first answer and I will never be convinced just because of the two examples of ‘unproved medicinal value’. None of this junk stories and tests can measure up to the loss of cute young brilliant personalities in the name of ‘medicinal value’. Puffing or whatever use of ganja weed in ‘moderation’ leads to being hooked… ask me … its just one step ..once hooked its hell lotta not easy…It breaks my heart to see such comments of support for ganja use be it small , medicinal or whatever. Visit hard core rehab places and you will turn your mindset around .. maybe …. who knows…( or wait till one of your family members is affected and you will feel it pretty hard, I can promise you)…

  14. Enough said on ganja support…. no more comments..,

People should incline to natural family methods if contraception is not appropriate…

    OR
he has to go for vasectomy…. hehhhhehhh!!!!!!!!!!

  15. #21. Thenji Stevens(Mrs). You work in a hospital environment, correct? And you know that Morphine or Codeine or other opiates are addictive. Is this class of drugs not being used in conventional medical treatment in spite of their habit-forming potential?

  16. If the shoe fits…

If traditional family planning methods work, why should they be discouraged unless these people want to protect th masses from HIV. Because I do not think there are any traditional barrier methods?

  17. #24, Lusaka,
    hi ,
    kale and greetings …
You are right. The best traditional methods should be encouraged, though the ‘safe period’ is the best option,. Am still laughing at the vasectomy option… coz that means he is ‘zapped’ for good….

  18. Speechless!!!, i never knew marijuana can also be used for child spacing, African women! are full of surprises, how did someone discovered that? and who?. Anyway tatyaipushe sana.

  19. There is need for these pipo to realise that time for baby booms 1950,1960and 1970s is over. There are many challenges that we are facing as parents. The econmy cannot sustain big families. You have many children and fail to provide for them. The health care givers in Mansa should not give up they should take that as a challenge.

  20. Traditional medicine is the best. I can’t risk to encourage my wife to go for conventional contraception with the known side effects so far. To have a wife suffering from cancer I guess cervical 5 yrs from now no no no no no is a sad thing……..If ganja works then better. We just have to know how to administer the same and the correct dosage period.

  21. Where is the leadership on this. It is the duty of those in power to make available the best care to these women. The cost of ignoring the needs of these people will be higher in future because we will have to pay for their poor health and for the numerous children they will bear. It is better the right action is taken now. With the help of traditional leaders progress can be made. Personally I feel that health workers need more training on how to approach these people. You do not turn up one day and say “What you are doing is wrong”. Studies need to be conducted and the people engaged in a respectable way. Then explanations have to be made. All this takes time and programs are required.
