Zambia Congress of Trade Union (ZCTU) President Leonard Hikaumba has said the Congress can only intervene in company matters if the
union where workers belonged to failed to resolve the matter.
Mr Hikaumba said the congress does not negotiate for the workers’ conditions of service and salaries but it helped affiliate, unions to resolve such matters and only intervened when they reached a deadlock.
The ZCTU President was reacting to media reports that employees at a pharmaceutical company in Ndola have not been paying workers for months and workers have threatened to protest if the situation was not resolved.
He said the congress was waiting for the union which represents the workers to make attempts to negotiate for them or report to its mother body, which is ZCTU.
Mr. Hikaumba however wondered as to why the problem had been left unattended to for such a long time adding that the situation was abnormal and should be resolved urgently.
He described it as unusual for workers to remain silent when they were not being paid their dues for a long period of time adding that they should have protested when the problem started rather than doing so now.
He has since pledged to make a follow up with the union to get to the root cause of the problem in an effort to finding a lasting solution.

I think Leonard Hikaumba has outlived his usefulness to the trade union fraternity! He seems to have lost the zeal he earlier had and it looks like he has been compromised!
Every year, at least in SA! Unionis fight for the employees increments. As i wright, public sector unions are up in arms against the government. When last did our public sector get an increment? How can one measure the success of a trade union/unioist? I actually forgot this guy exists! Its shameful!
Leonard Hikaumba ni NKOKO, surely can he even be considered for President, not in 1000years to come. Workers in Zambia are suffering, it is this same union which is facilitating corruption in the public service by not fighting for standard conditions of service.
How do you allow a salary of K800,000 to a graduate civil servant and housing allowance K50,000 to manage a project worth $50million dollars and not surely expect him to steal, even the bible says do not tempt mankind.

This Union thing is a waste of time. we have seen Labour minister full of corruption because he doest not want the campany to increase the salary so he agrees to be bribed by management. we are crying. we have no hope with mmd if it wins the elections next year because there is so much corruption in the MInistry of labour. Doez ZCTU exist, and if so what do the leaderz do? This is probably the most “quiet and relaxt” trade union Zambia and maybe Africa haz ever had. #1 Which prezidency do have in mind, certainly not the republican?
ZCTU have known about this problem for 12 months now. But like the Judges the DPP the Police he is waiting for instructions from RB.
