University of Zambia Vice Chancellor Stephen Simukanga has appealed for support towards the institution in order for it to stand as a centre of excellence in higher education.

Professor Simukanga said UNZA needs support in a number of areas, such as rehabilitation of laboratories and lecture rooms.

He said the university also needs support in staff development through scholarships.

Professor Simukanga said the university library is also an area of concern, apart from staff exchange programmes.

Professor Simukanga was speaking when United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization -UNESCO-Director General Irina Bokova toured UNZA Monday afternoon.

And Ms Bokova says she is impressed with facilities at the institution, and stands ready to assist in any way possible.

The facilities on her familiarization tour included the Centre for Information and Communication Technology, as well as the University library.

  1. Begging begging begging…all the time when UNZA produces mining engineers. These same engineers go to work for private mines which government is relactant to tax appropriately… Mu Zambia mukaleka lila ukulomba? Very embarasing!!!

  2. Those were the days when we used to run to the Dinning Hall for Top Soup, not now every room is a kitchen how can students study nokwipika at the same time.

  3. #4 Sam Mbewe
I was in Africa 6-19 mune, right next to the Ayatolah’s ‘level’.Those were the days.

  4. my brother was there in africa, cant remember which block. why dnt you ask the government to build a new university instead to lift some of the weight. oh sorry the gov wont shame!! does unza even attract foreign students?

  5. UNZA needs to establish alumni associations that can contribute to the growth of the University. So many UNZA graduates are well to do. Ask them for donations and return name a building after them or some other incentives like that. That’s how Universities the world over make money.

  6. Gone are the days, UNZA is a sorry site. I wish the government could have built a new university instead of buying those Chinese mobile hospitals. We need qualified personnel, not mobile hospitals. Some hospitals are run by one Doctor, what would happen if that Doctor went with the mobile hospital? Patients left behind would die.

  7. This is the best time to ask for support. I am sure UNZA will be given money, knowing UNZA is sensitive when it comes to elections. Bwana chancellor ask for billions, Dora will provide.

  8. There was once an association called Patnership Forum and it was being run by Mr Sebastian Kopulande as the chairman. There duties were to mobilise funds from the former UNZA students and channel those funds to help infrastructure development at both UNZA and CBU. At that time it was doing some great works. If anyone among the bloggers knows whats happening to this association now please shed some light.

  9. Guys, most of us are on graduate.com… Why can’t we ‘migrate’ a site for UNZA alumni and start from there? Would be great to see what can be done that way. We can start with silly things like repairing a wardrobe in each of our former rooms…

  10. On “And Ms Bokova says she is impressed with facilities at the institution, and stands ready to assist in any way possible… facilities on her familiarization tour included the Centre for Information and Communication Technology, as well as the University library” thanks Ms Bokova but I hope you were also taken to obsolete equipment that is not serving the students.

Let all those Corporate Institutions that employ UNZA graduates come on board to assist UNZA churn out better prepared graduates that will do the required tasks at their institutions and/or places of work.

Be blest all and vote for UPND to form GRZ Administration this 2011.

  11. # 10 last year I went to UNZA to find out about Alumni association. I was told that they did not have resources to sustain the initiative. I was very disappointed because I wanted to give something through this venture. Nevertheless, there is hope.

  12. what type of graduates do we produce? they kind who expect things on a silver platter. most of them want to do desk jobs, textbook theory type graduates.
same old story we need aid, aid, aid and more aid, so that we can ………..

there are thousands of unza students who get paid more in allowances than is spent educating them. they can’t even volunteer to help clean up the institution, paint or do any works, they expect someone to come from the north pole or timbuktu to solve their problems

  13. #1,Brian. It is very embarrassing indeed, but I think RB and MMD have failed our beloved UNZA. There are other simple measures that the current government could have taken, other than taxing, to benefit UNZA and improve Zambian lives in general. They could have, for example, simply asked the many companies enjoying handsome profits to adopt/fund and renovate one School (i.e School of Humanities, Engineering and so on) each at UNZA or rehabilitate the labs, lecture rooms and halls of residence.

I feel sorry for the professor because the government has left him out to dry, given the inadequate funding he receives. Our politicians serve themselves and forget Zambian tax payers. They have lost the mandate to govern because they do not have the integrity and stamina for public service.

  14. Government just to look for money and bulid a modern University somewhere in Chongwe area. The current University is in a deplorable state.

  15. Sweet UNZA, days of Beirut, Mtezima, Bosnian and Hezgovna. Wanted to visit my former room TP5-18 but but was scared maybe pali ichi vivu, abaiche kuti bakochela motoka like I used to do in the 90’s

  16. No. 20 Catch a Fire:

So you remember the days of abena Kelo and Jack Pin and the Barbie. Big ma fresha High Voltage.
Good mate. Have a lovely day.

  17. colleagues, we should not simply be lamenting about this from a safe distance. those of us who passed through this institution are where we are because of the excellent tuition we got from there,,,,,, which by the way was paid for by someone else- the tax payer. we all know how the university came to being. its only i am not good at this organising thing but i am sure there is someone out there from among us who is talented at creating and running projects; in which case i pledge to be the first contributor to a fund to revamp the ruins with a sum of US $ 2000.00. come on guys lets get this going!

  18. Viva UNZASU! Viva. Those were the days! Abena Sole sole, Leonard Hikaumba and abena Brian! Mamama… Saturday njikata… oliya band, uweka band, amayenge band. All playing in student’s canteen or sports hall. From Chimunzi with muddy shoes… just getting in to dance to- two by two caterpillar by two. Soweto 4-12 was a den by then. New londe motel in matero pa saturday…. ma ma ma …Do you guys remember the popular Segu! when we went for dinner at 16:58hrs and know on the doors with insapato that had metal in front. Good old days!! yaba… we ned to start something sure!

  19. the problem in the institution management..they are educated but they are dull making money is common sense you dont need a degree to do that..this university has no common sense to raise money..there a lot of services they can offer to the public and raise money..the problem they just want money to come on silver platter..

  20. Chiluba’s 10 years contributed to the current state of the university. This man did nothing until LPM (MHSRIP) tried to help with building infrastructure. If those 10 years were used productively, this state of affairs would not be same today.

  21. Yes # 26: UNZA lost 10 years during Kafupi’s rule! The only thing we can remember him by is the 8 month’s closure over book allowance in 1997. Levy’s efforts can now be seen, a hostel block has been built between the Dingo and Oct.
    # 1 is very correct. VIVA RUPO!
UNZA is full of ‘under 5s’ now. Ask them what a ‘UNIT’ is, no idea!

  22. I was in Africa 5-32! I can’t believe it’s almost 30 years ago now … I think the long-term solution to Unza woes is to charge commercial fees and for the main sponsor, GRZ, to pay Unza actual Kwacha for every sponsored student and not to pay Unza in kind. And also for corporate sponsors to come on board and adopt whole schools, hostels, etc, in return for tax incentives, as no. 18 has explained very well.

  23. indeed unza is now a shodow of its former self. But sure something can surely be done. All former Monks,Mojos and Momas please get organized and help UNZA.

  24. #16 & #22, im a student at the university and having had a chat with the new UNZASU exec, i know that the are more than willing to create a platform were former students can help rebuild the image of the university. if there is a way we can get in contact with you because at present, we are embarking on a project to improve the sanitary conditions from their present state and providing more toilets and building shower blocks for the Big flats.
