ZAMBIA’s High Commissioner to Canada Nevers Mumba says he will state his position next week on whether he will contest the position of the MMD party presidency.
Dr Mumba said he will issue a comprehensive statement in which he will make his position known on whether he will contest the position of the MMD party presidency.
He said this in a telephone interview from Canada on Sunday that he has received a lot of requests from MMD members that he should take over the leadership of the opposition party and help it regain the popularity it used to enjoy from Zambians.
“I don’t want to comment on this matter now, but I will next week issue a comprehensive statement which will indicate whether I will or not contest the position of the MMD party presidency,” Dr Mumba said.
Die Hard MMD youth wing has backed the candidature of Dr Mumba to take over the party presidency from current holder, former republican president Banda.
National coordinator Bowman Lusambo said in an interview in Lusaka yesterday, though other party officials named in the former ruling party’s presidential race equally have leadership skills, Dr Mumba is the best candidate.
Others that are vying for the MMD presidency include former minister of Commerce, Trade and Industry and Lunte member of Parliament Felix Mutati, former deputy minister of Local Government and Housing and Chisamba member of Parliament Moses Muteteka and former minister of Foreign Affairs and Kasempa member of Parliament Kabinga Pande.
Others are former minister of Local Government and Housing and Mumbwa MMD MP Dr Brian Chituwo, former Minister of Finance and National Planning Situmbeko Musokotwane, Charles Ngesa and Nason Msoni both party members.
“We think Dr Mumba can push us from where we are now to the next stage, probably taking us back into power. We know that Dr Mumba will work with us the youths, all structures of the party, the Church and ordinary Zambians.
“Dr Mumba has a lot of experience which will help the party regain its popularity it used to enjoy from Zambians. We want someone who will help the party to win the forthcoming 2016 tripartite elections and not someone who will destroy the party,” Mr Lusambo said.
He said Dr Mumba has leadership qualities that the opposition MMD needs in its current state.
Mr Lusambo also said Dr Mumba is the right person to take over the leadership of the party because he once served as republican vice-president in former president Mwanawasa’s administration.
Mr Lusambo said Dr Mumba is charismatic, clean and has the ability to interact with all citizens regardless of their political affiliation and has vast experience in relating with the international community.
He warned that the MMD youths will not support any candidate who will engage in corrupt practices to win the presidency.
Mr Lusambo said all the presidential hopefuls must exercise their democratic right in a decent manner.

In zambia democracy is still far from maturing. How can some one in the name of a carde tell the entire party who should rule. This is how bais future appointments start. The hope is that this person carries the day and may be he because the president he will give such a person a post. This is why we have problems because people just support for personal gains. Like PF we supported then only to discover a certain sector is position for posts via church or otherwise.

Trouble is Africans forget easily! This man used to go round the country with Zambia shall be saved. He then formed his party. He got himself into politics after claiming God had called him to politics after years of despising politics. He got chosen leader of opposition.
Suddenly he left his party to become VP. He got kicked out after being used by LPM. The man became so desperate he went to State House to plead for a diplomatic position. We know all about that.

Nevers has never won an election before in his entire political career. Can someone tell me who was the first MP or Counsellor in any of his previous political parties?
