Zambia this afternoon headed to South Africa to begin their 2014 Fifa World Cup Group D qualifiers training camp.

Two foreign-based and five home-based players were in the travelling party led by Zambia assistant coach Patrice Beaumelle who flew out on Sunday afternoon from Lusaka.

Herve Renard is already in Johannesburg ahead of the training camp.

Midfielders Chisamba Lungu from FC Ural in Russia and William Njobvu of Hapoel Ironi Kiryat Shmona travelled from Lusaka to Johannesburg with the team.

Others are Zesco United defender Nyambe Mulenga, Power Dynamos midfielders Thomas Nyirenda and Joseph Sitali.

Goalkeepers Kalililo Kakonje and Daniel Munyau of Napsa Stars and Red Arrows respectively completed the team that headed to South Africa today.

The call-ups from TP Mazembe in DR Congo led by playmaker Rainford Kalaba are all expected to join the team on Monday.

In all, 13 players are expected to be part of this week’s first phase of training camp before the Chinese and European based players join the side over the weekend.

Zambia will play Sudan in the two sides opening Group D match on June 2 in Khartoum before heading back home to host Ghana on June 9 in Ndola.

  1. My question to your King his royal highness Kalu is: How long is Zambian National Team (AFCON 2012 Champions) going to continue camping in a foreign country?

  2. #2 this is a worn thin question, just accept that we will ALWAYS depend on foreign resources. If your question was being asked say 5 years post independence, I would have joined in the chorus, but almost 50 years? come on…

  3. Jay jay Brazil once never played a game on home soil for over two years.Brazil has never won a world cup on home soil and similarly Zambia has never hosted a nations cup,the victory was in Gabon, the 1974 final was in Egypt while the 1994 final was in Tunisia. So the foreign aspect is very important to football,we can train anywhere and play anywhere.GOD BLESS ZAMBIA.

  4. Jay jay we don’t have infrastructure my friend.Look at SA they hosted world cup and already hosting AFCON tournament in 2013.They have all we need in football. So we just accept it.

  5. Does anyone know details of the training schedule?? Us here in Joburg want to support the guys even as they train….

My question has nothing to do with where one plays a game or where a tournament is hosted BUT all to do with the national team’s continued use of RSA as a training camp… at what cost and for how long?
FAZ needs to start implementing long term strategies, merely stating lack of infrastructure is a laid back way to approach issues. FYI, FAZ can request for free land from the Gov’t anywhere in the country to build training facilities or upgrade current facilities. Mind you they have funds in their coffers to carry out such a project.
Remember that such facilities and fitness professionals in it would also benefit local clubs in our leagues hence it is a worthwhile investment.
