Post bus accident that claimed 50 lives

At least over 50 people have died in a road traffic accident that occurred this morning on the Great North Road.

The accident happened around 07 hours in Chibombo district after a 70 sitter Post bus heading to Lusaka from Ndola collided with a truck.

Police spokesperson Elizabeth Kanjela confirmed the development to QFM News in a telephone interview.

By broadcast time, Ms. Kanjela could however not give out further details about the exact number of people confirmed dead as some bodies were still trapped in the wreckage of the bus.

accident3
And a source told QFM news that only 10 people have survived the accident while rescue efforts to retrieve the trapped bodies are underway.

The bodies of the deceased have been taken to Liteta hospital mortuary, while the ten survivors of the accident are being treated for injuries at the same hospital.

This could be one of the worst road traffic accidents the country has recorded.

THIS MUST HAVE BEEN AN OVER SPEEDING CASE ON BOTH DRIVERS.

RTSA MUST TAKE FURTHER MEASURES TO BRING ABOUT SAFETY TO THE TRAVELING PUBLIC.

THIS IS ONE OF THE WORST DAYS IN THE HISTORY OF OUR COUNTRY. MAY THEIR SOULS RIEP.

Even drivers are extremely mad over PF government, the all atmosphere in Zambia is just like breaking things.
      - Driver can’t concentrate when babies are crying of hunger. No meal meal.
      - Mothers are crying because their daughters have been slaughtered by PF charm hunters.
      - Men are calling friends, , no one to take pick them from station because taxi drivers have been shot.
      - The rest are tearing off The Post Newspaper because of images of Kabimba.
      What a country man.
Now look, they are even posting pictures of souls!! No respect what so ever.

We need to dual carriage way roads. The developed countries avoided such calamities by making interstate roads and high ways dual carriage ways. Zambia has it stands will continue having such accidents as long as we have single lane roads. May the soul of the dead rest in peace.

If any family or friends affected in that tragedy are offended in anyway, I APOLOGIZE.
But remember that we are different people, and we mourn in different ways. Some are already mu ng’anga some are fighting… yes again that’s was my way of mourning.
But whoever sent one of those pictures must be sued by some concerned families or apologise.

This is an extremely shocking, poignant, gloomy and sad and heartbreaking situation. The sheer number of lives that have needlessly been lost stabs the heart.

The pictures of mangled and twisted heap of metal with bodies on the road is so painful to look at.

How could this happen? Why dont we take preventive and corrective measures to avoid such carnage from happening again?

There is an urgent need to make our roads safe to stop such slaughter!! I propose the immediate construction of a dual carriage way from Chililabombwe to Livingstone and all the towns in between

If there is always money for by-elections govt must find money to save lives even if it means borrowing from IMF or world bank!!

May the souls of the departed rest in eternal peace

Yes, a priest during campaigns did a deadly sacrice and now the spirit wants to be paid their dues. Now they are claiming what should be theirs. Poor Finishers at work. When are we going to learn to put national interests ahead of self? These accidents reflect the negligence in our road safety standards due to corrupt activities. We licence drivers without testing them, drivers have no due care while on the road carrying precious souls – there must be something big that is wrong somewhere. Why, why should people keep losing their beloved ones because of this negligence on the part of drivers and government law enforcement agencies. Please lets change as a country and change NOW!

@Boom & Whatever… Surely you cannot say nobody should be blamed for this kind of accident!? Road accidents have been on a steep increase since last year. There must be something wrong going on & it is the duty of a sitting government to care for its citizenry and stop this dangerous trend. You may have lost relatives in this one but wouldn’t you wish no more of your relatives perished the same way again and again?

I know someone who was on this bus, and just waiting to hear if he will pull through God willing….

But this is the info i got though its sketchy

    - It was raining, and knowing most Zambian drivers, either both didn’t reduce their speed to the situation (Poor visibility, slippery road) or one of them didn’t and found themselves in the other lane, but usually when one of you is slow enough, you can attempt to avoid a head on collision

    - this happened at a sort of a blind spot.

And imagine, i almost put someone on a bus today, and most likely, i would have taken them to the Post.

All in all, we have talked about this before. and we shall continue talking about this over and over again.

    1. This to me looks like a basic rule broken. When its raining, slow down!

MTSRIP.. We need speed traps in our busy roads, RTSA you can do better, while roads are being rehabilitated enforcement of traffic rules especially on public transport is most important. At the moment one can drive at any speed from Mwami boarder in Chipata up to Lusaka minus being subjected to any speed control, from Nakonde to Lusaka, Lusaka to Livingstone.. Besides weigh bridges are rare on most of our major roads, markings are faded if not absent, sign posts are either absent or missing, no safety is guaranteed by RATSA, Driving in the night is a risky business.. But money for Road Tax and Driving Licenses is being collected on a daily basis..

No proper markings, sign post etc. If you see the kitwe chingola road you only drive at nite when its necessary and at a reduced speed there are mini rivers and not potholes and the Govt is not even corcerned. working on potholes is a problem but money is found or always there for by elections and to fly them out when they are sick. Too bad indeed and MTSRIP.

    2. Regardless of who made the blunder here, the situation of drivers in Zambia is a BAD one. just look at how almost everyone drives on a daily basis…its a sad state. i see people cruise past tight spaces, and don’t even bother to reduce speeds,… You can see the 10 basic rules of driving been broken everyday

    3. its not tough to get a license in Zambia. Therefore half baked drivers are filled the roads with alteeza’s and the like.

    4. Others don’t learn driving the ideal way, hence no care for traffic rules.

    5. our roads are bad

    6. Driving is not a neccessity, its also a means of showing other drivers that you are “the man” behind the wheel. We have heard of people bragging that they do Ndola – kitwe in 7 minutes.

Too Sad and most of them were mothers. Ba RTSA pls come up with a lot of preventive measures this time. Where will the travelling public ran to if Post Buses are timeously getting involved in the road cannage? I think Govt should ban bus operators who put time of arrival to the next station on all operators charts for this also force drivers to speed so as to catch up with time if they are late leading to some accidents en route.

Our nation has been sold to the devil and the sooner we wake up from the slumber brethlen the better.
“if my people who are called by my name humble themselves, and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and heal their land.
“.It’s time to seek the faCe of the lord for the nation.ARISE BRETHLEN !

I think its time we started expanding our roads, especially major ones like the Great North Road into dual carriage ways, of course its a expensive venture but not compared the human lives that are being lost every day. Cant believe that almost 50 years after independence roads are still the same the colonial masters left them.

I agree with you. If only our politicians can avoid creating unnecessary by-elections, we can save a lot of money which can then be used to expand our major roads into dual carriage ways. But disappointingly, these these PF thugs are busy creating by-elections at the expense of development. In short, people will continue to die in road accidents because of poor leadership at the higher level.

The Chibombo accident is a sad news to all Zambians! More than 50 people dead in one single accident is 50 people less in the development of the country. Drivers should be conscious of the fact that their speed limits are regulated with or without traffic officers monitoring them, especially public transport vehicles. The Lusaka – Kabwe road is known to be slipperly, especially when it has rained, as was the night before the accident. Let government put strict measures to punish erroring drivers!!

The easy way out is to blame the driver/s and over speeding but that will not prevent the death on our roads. As a nation we need be serious and address these issue. In a country where its easy to hold a parliamentary by-election than to mend a pot hole on the road, easier to be a president of some party that to get a job as a security guard such are the results

Despite this terrible carnage, I still hail our drivers as some of the best around. I mean we drive without any aided markings in most roads. Talk to South African truck drivers that drive through our roads, they can’t believe how we get around without any basic road markings. This is truelly tragic! Put politics aside for once people! Accidents dont just happen; there is always a chain of catastrophic failures in the system that manifest themselves into accidents.
Around the world nations have build good roads; and I mean “minimum” dual carriage ways to as to improve driver safety. They have trained their drivers well; and they punish reckless driving very harshly. Ask yourself the question: Has this been the case in Zambia? If no; then you realise that the incidence could happen to any one of us that use those roads. 13.8m people with such mediocre transport network and you expect to have no accidents? RTSA cannot stop it; Traffic police cannot stop it; it has to take a strategic implementation of road construction; at a deligent pace for the next 20 years. May their souls rest in peace.

May the Lord open the spiritual eyes of every believer in Zambia so that prayers are prayed effectively in Jesus name by understanding the victory that Jesus obtained over Zambia 2000 years ago, all these occurrences and similar occurrences do not take God by surprise because he already defeated and overcame them on the cross of calvary, he is just looking for Christians, intercessors to stand in the gap even before anything happens,to pray in the spirit and cancel and stop the evil in Jesus name as the Holy Spirit reveals all the evil intended for Zambia. Victory is guaranteed in Jesus name. The blood that Jesus shed on the cross was not in vain. Eph 1:17-20.

What we need in Zambia is to make all highways dual carriageways. Accidents will be mininised. Unfortunately there are other problems such drunk driving, issuing drivrers licenses to people who have not undergone driving training and testing, allowing vehicles that are not roadworthy to be moving freely on the roads, and trafffic rule violations are rife and in most cases, go unpunished. The government is careless and irresponsible, and the road agency is toothless. In short, there’s no system in Zambia. As long as we do not deal with these issues, we will continue dying in numbers, which is a shame. I long for a time when Zambia is going to have responsible, caring, and selfless leaders who can turn things round and make Zambia a better and safe place for all. This is bad; it hurts! Zambia

Very very sad indeed! As much as accidents can happen anywhere in the world, there is big compound problem in Zambia when it comes to road safety: Corruption, Careless driving, Bad roads, weak traffic laws and implementation etc. Every time I visit mother Zambia I sigh a sigh of relief every time I arrive safely on Public transport – even on private transport! I reached the spot just a few minutes after it happened . i understand the truck lost control (personally feel could be due to the load on truck sliding to one side due to poor lading) and started swerving to the right , hit a jeep that was crossing ( the jeep’s front wheel broke and skid to the right into the ditch. The driver is an old man and very unlikely he was trying to overtake the bus, as he managed to escape absolutely unhurt) . The truck still kept swerving to the right to the extent it came as a complete blockage to the bus which was travelling at a high speed . Both vehicles must be at atleast 120km/h . the impact was so huge that killed so many . Especially a couple of babies and many crushed beyond recognition . May their soul rest in peace . PLEASE DRIVE SLOW AND SAFE

The use of seatbelts on all big buses should be obligatory. Seatbelts are meant to save lives. RTSA does not enforce the use of seatbelts on big buses. I’ve travelled several times on big buses I’ve never seen any RTSA officer entering into the bus to check if passangers are wearing seats belts or not. Instead, I’ve seen them several times receiving what I guess to be bribes from bus drivers. Please motorists/passengers let us use seatbelts and above all observe traffic rules. I’m really devastated with this accident. May the deceased rest in peace and The God of love comfort the bereaved families.

I don’t know what you mean, but I feel that you are labeling the victims as sinners. Forgive me if I have misconstrued your message, but accidents are caused by people and they demand level-headed, practical solutions – not mumble jumble, self indulgent sentiments. The Bible has its place, but this verse sounds offensive in this context. Zambians are not being punished by God!!

A dark cloud fell over me today. It was a very difficult day for me running between class and the office, all the time wishing for the best for my friend of more than nineteen years was on this bus from Ndola. I got the news of the accident around 09:20 hrs. From then I agonised for more news. At 12.40 hrs, it was confirmed that this firend had died in this accident. Tonight, I would have been sharing jokes with him in my house in Avondale but God’s plans are beyond human understanding.

His name is Mr. Thomas William Mwale, a very energetic family man. One time in his life he played soccer for Ndola United and Zambia. He studied insurance and was a very capable broker in Botswana for 15 years. He leaves behind a wife, Elizabeth and three daughters Bahati, Lise and Mwila.

All I see about them is manning useless roadblocks checking for valid road tax and drivers licences inconveniencing hard working people. They insist that you pay the fine on the spot or they impound your vehicle for forgetting your walet containing the Licence. Let them have mobile data bases where they can tell whether one has a valid document or not. They give fitness to those timber ferrying lorries that do not have brakes, lights and reflectors. (1) Introduce speed limits for public transport to reduce the impact should an accident occur,
    (2) It is about time our country’s roads had more lanes on its major routes.
