Government has described as baseless claims by United Party for National Development (UPND) leader, Hakainde Hichilema, in an interview with the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) that the Patriotic Front has created a dictatorship government.
Information and Broadcasting Services Deputy Minister, Mwansa Kapeya, says government has demonstrated its commitment to good governance and the rule of law which he said the opposition leader should be honest enough to admit instead of accusing it of bad governance and dictatorship.
The Minister noted that in a dictatorship government, Mr Hichilema would not be given media coverage or be in the limelight as he is enjoying on a daily basis.
Mr Kapeya said the UPND leader’s baseless outburst against government is as a result of the shrinking political fortune and the humiliating defeat his party has suffered in the recently held parliamentary by-elections in Livingstone and Mpongwe at the hands of the ruling PF.
“Which dictatorship is Mr Hichilema talking about that allows him to go and hold a press conference on a foreign soil (South Africa) to castigate his country and still get away with it as he did recently with other opposition leaders,” Mr Kapeya wondered.
Mr Kapeya further noted that contrary to the attacks, Mr Hichilema has exhibited high levels of political intolerance and dictatorship by dictating to his Members of Parliament not to work with the PF government at the expense of national development.
The Minister advised the UPND leader to desist from using government as a scapegoat each time he is in trouble with the law.
He said government promised a people-driven constitution which he said is underway while the free and independent media which his government promised is already in place.
He said with the creation of a new province and new districts around the country to bridge the flow of development to the people, the decentralisation of power to the people which the PF government is gaining momentum is being achieved.

I do not agree that even Mr Banda voluntarily left the seat without noticing the wave of betrayal by most loyal citizens that it convinced him to leave the seat even when he clearly lost. You do realise that when the Egyptians finally picked up courage it inspired the Libyans which further push the wind of change moving in all directions. And the crashing of Gaddafi and how quickly the US and British government distanced themselves from these countries could have forced Mr Banda to finally see his time was up
My point is, looking at a lot of what your president has said and failed to implement pre election times suggests that without this wind of pressure from outside now evident, he will not accept defeat just the same as the Kenyan government have been duped in accepting a flawed leader with mounting pressure from outside to be jailed.

BBC has a duty to give PF benefit of doubt. This also implies providing the same conditions to PF in order for PF to defend government achievements. Similarly, government needs the same conditions to correct any negative perceptions. That is the meaning of the rule of law. It is unacceptable for UPND to be treated like a government when it is still in opposition.

But HH should also realize that he has more work to do for his part than pointing fingers at the PF govt in the media. The party has less people and MPs and the number is dwindling down from the time he took office. These are some issues that he needs to be addressing. Kwathu you raise very good points, however if you ask an average Zambian….what they care about the most is their children future education prospects, the state of the our hospitals,their standard of living etc. I personally believe that these issues are more important than the arrest of opposition leaders who are not so clean themselves. They hide behind bad laws or manipulate them to their advantage, “successful” dictators take control of the minds of the masses, telling them what to think. You mention wins in by-elections but not why we’ve having so many of them so soon after a general election? The opposition has successfully managed to get the international community to sit up and take notice. BBC also gave Kabimba a platform, the least said about his performance the better.
Winter Kabimba failed to answer the charges put against Sata’s dictatorship on the same BBC Programme. Suffice it to say that I was embarrassed as a Zambian by Kabimba’s shallowness and dullness. I have listened to Mugabe’s spokespeople on international media at least they don’t embarrass their country with dullness even when what they are defending is disgusting. Honestly a Minister of Justice should not be reduced to simply saying the overused ‘they are bitter’ when asked a question. Not everyone has a double digit IQ of a PF cadre!

What is dictatorship? When opposition political parties cant hold peaceful demostrations and political rallies, that is dictatorship. When the ruling party uses the arrogance of numbers in parliament to approve unconstitutional expenditure, that is dictatorship. When a Head of State orders soldiers to kill citizens who have issues or hold a different view is a clear case of dictatorship. When a President introduces price controls by decree e.g. price of mealie meal at KR50, this is dictatorship. When the public media is so clearly biased against disenting views, without even censorship, that is damn dictatorship. Zambia or Zimbabwe?????????????
Only a small fraction of the bloggers that have contributed on this article have achieved a recognisable level of education. There lies the biggest problem we face as a nation. I, for one, have never supported Sata but loathe those of you who want to demonize my tribe just because of one person.
