Suspended Zambia Railways (ZRL) Managing Director Professor Clive Chirwa has vacated luxurious Fallsway
apartments and moved into his residence in Kabwe.

A check at the ZRL CEO’s residence in Kabwe’s Highridge area yesterday found that the suspended Managing Director Professor Clive Chirwa had moved into the house following President Michael Sata’s directive for him to vacate the luxurious Fallsway apartments and placed him on half monthly pay, pending the conclusion of investigations.

A visit at the CEO’s residence, a woman found said Prof Chirwa had referred all queries to Shitima House which houses ZRL offices and would not see any person.

The house in question looked like works were still going on as some structures looked run down while some workers were busy cleaning the surroundings.

Transport, Works, Supply and Communications Permanent Secretary, Muyenga Atanga, confirmed that Prof Chirwa had occupied the house but requested that he be given a bit of privacy during this period.

Dr Atanga was early this week was appointed to oversee Zambia Railways (ZRL) operations has started his work in Kabwe.

Dr Atanga in an interview in Kabwe yesterday said he had started his work and that there was a lot of work to be done but was confident everything would be in place soon.

President Sata recently suspended prof Chirwa for alleged corruption in the manner he managed the national railway and ordered for investigations.

The commission has since commenced investigations into reports of alleged corrupt practices and abuse of authority of office against Prof Chirwa and the dissolved ZRL Board of Directors.

    • the man must first give himself a break by removing the pride horns on his head… if you can advise him not to promise zambians too much..

    • Its very hard to defend a man like Chriwa, as he needs to improve on his public persona; Its one thing to say you are sacrificing a lot to be in Zambia and another to be paid a competitive salary with all the trappings of FTSE 100 company. If he learned anything from British CEOs at public owned companies like RBS or United Utilities, its that the appear humble on camera and always want to discuss operational and strategic issues not there salary. They leave that to their public relations team. If he had managerial and corporate experience he would have known this but sadly the academic in him gets the better of him.

  1. We start with basics, from the roots and then climb up the tree to the branches until the greatest heights. We definately cannot afford misusing, or misapplying borrowed capital before any profit from it, on high rentals. Eat from profits not from seed capital especially that its borrowed, that Euro Bond which we shall pay with interest. Level headed thinking is a virtual.

    • I never for once thought “thinking” wasn’t reality – You never know on LT we learn so many things Virtual thinking sounds “woolly” to me! Am sure level headed thinking is a virtue, which comes in loads for Chirwa!!!

  2. How about the said ministers and permanent secretaries? Have they been removed from this very expensive hotel???? Be real, gentlemen.

    • Almost certainly not – Fallsway Villas is owned by a big donor to PF so this is all about kickbacks to their supporters.

    • That’s not important to the people they are only interested in Chriwa if it wasn’t for this debacle these ministers and PS would have been residing there till 2016 with their girlfriends. There is a vacuum in Zambia for investigative media tabloid please privatise Times and Daily Mail.

  3. Muppet, you should have moved there when the Board told you to. Instead you threw tantrums and ran to the press saying all sorts of nonsense. Clive you’ve been pushed and its surprising that you’ve not gone back to your manor in Bolton as you had threatened. You’re nothing but a Walter Minty character!

    • Haters? No my dear Zambians are just concerned about the $120m that was borrowed in their name. The money does not belong to Chirwa and hius sycophants to use as he wishes. This is a serious matter. Sata and PF wont be there forever to protect people who misuse public money. Chirwa should not big himself up. He has never managed any company before let alone a railway company. This is the reason why he failed to give 4 referees when requested to do so.

    • “Miss Kama sutra” , maybe YOU SHOULDN’T “BIG YOURSELF UP – How many positions from that book have you mastered?????? CAN YOU ALSO GIVE US REFEREES who will back you on the same?? Who told you the Eurobond is YOUR MONEY??? That money belongs to Investors who are MONEY PUNTERS They believe they will be paid back with a slice of our profits OR THEY COULD LOSE!
Their belief is based on THE RECENT COPPER PRICES rather who ever sold the bond to them!!

    • MO TAIM – thanks for this posting. I suggest Clive equally stops responding to any questions. Let the ZRL public relations office do that for you. You’re too intelligent for some of these Individuals.

  4. Give Chirwa a chance. The only negative about him is that being from the academic world, he has mostly been dealing with students who in most cases are young. He does not have inter person skills. Henry chipewo was there and zambia railways collapsed . He seems to understand the situation though, especially when he say ZRL is not a research center where you need very high qualification.

    • Let him take a break. He is a liar and charlatan. Let him go back to his castle in Bolton. Zambia is too poor to maintain a pretend British land lord on bond money. Our kids shouldn’t have to grow up repaying debts that were used to feed the ego of one washed up Professor from a third rate British university established in 2004 from the remnants of a trades school.

    • sepiso let him without sin be the fisrt to cast a stone.. who are you to judge mistakes can not be justified by mistakes and should our merciful Lord choose to pinpoint you by your first sin no memories of your deformation would linger..everyone deserves a second chance….ah ah

    • This about public resources. It is not about some quotes from your religious books. Let him make mistakes with his own money not public money.

    • Cakubaba! Why are you responding to nothing? The truth hurts. Your Chirwa is a liar. He even wanted to contest for the Presidency when he knew very well that he was a British passport holder. This fake professor is a cheat!

    • I suggest we distinguish the African-based academic from the Western-based (even East European and Asian, I daresay) academic. The orientations are very, very different. Unlike African-based academics, most other academics seamlessly get into industry successfully and function in superior fashion. Haven’t you noted how PhDs in the USA are now targets for Business Administration orientation? They are proving to be much better than MBA graduates in most cases. We must not paint Chirwa with the same brush we have been painting academics who have only talked without anything to show for it.

    • Really? Is it the reason why Chirwa wants to live like a Prince before he has even done anything? Chirwa has no record. His Clavel company he engaged has never done any business with anyone. ZRL was to be Clavel’s first client. And this is the charlatan you want to promote? Please not with the nation’s borrowed money!

    • kalos and sansa- I am in favour of chirwa but I would want him to improve on his communication skills. He should avoid strong words like nonsense when dealing with fellow adults. I also propose chipewo to be on the board so that the country can benefit from his experience at ZRL.

    • What communication skills??? You seem to be the one requiring the skills!
Nonsense is made up of two words: Non – meaning NONE( that is NOTHING!!) & Sense – that is something sensible!!! So if someone fronts up like you spewing what you just did, IT QUALIFIES TO BE CALLED NONSENSE!!!!! wa umfwa??????

    • Chicken you don t seem to have an idea of what you are talking about. The Universities in this part of the world carry out indispensable research on which these countries have thrived and benefitted. Talk about education as an industry, you will be be on the right track. Clive is well suited and would do wonders given the support.

  5. Prof Chirwa should take trams or underground trains to kabwe. there you have a small town waiting for you to prove yourself. put a fast train to lusaka so that you can be in the capital everyday, watch a movie at arcades, have a few beers at breakpoint then back to Kabwe. Im dreaming aint i?lol

  6. chirwa chirwa chirwa.. i hope you have learnt your lession, and all of you out there,, when you go back home(zambia) play your cards close to your chest, donot go back home with horns and try to show off,,, there is alot bitternes there which sets people off easily

    • @defcfa0d532499792cf0d3f1d2fe8b19:disqus,
I like this one and is my quote of the day, ‘do not go back home with horns and try to show off..there is a lot of bitterness there which sets people off easily’.

    • Ndobo, BITTERNESS ABOUT WHAT??? That the others couldn’t even set foot in the west?? That they flunked miserably?? That they can’t feel proud about their ambitions??
Zambia is not a microcosm – we NOW LIVE IN A GLOBAL VILLAGE, SOON MOST OF US WE WILL BE COMING HOME TO ROOST – Like it or Not – THIEVES & SYCOPHANTS SHOULD BE VERY VERY AFRAID!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  7. PEOPLE WHO SOLD ZAMBIA RAILWAYS LAND AND SCRAP WAGONS ,BETRAYED MR CHIRWA.THEY WERE PLAYING”” DOUBLE TOBELA””,BETWEEN THE BOARD AND HIM.BEING NEW HE TRUSTED EVEN PEOPLE HE SHOULD HAVE HANDED OVER TO GRZ FOR THEFT.””THERE IS STILL SOME CATS AMONG THE PIGEONS ON ZRL.MR CHIRWA IS THE RIGHT PERSON FOR ZRL CEO.DON””T LISTEN TO CHIPEWO,HE IS MORE BOOK ENGINEER THAN MR CHIRWA.LET CHIPEWO SHOW THE ZAMBIANS WHICH PROJECT HE MANAGED ON ZAMBIA RAILWAYS WHEN HE WAS WORKING FOR THE SAME.WHAT YOU MIGHT GET IS HIM DOING TRACK MAINTANANCE WORK OF LESS THAN 20KM NEAR LUSAKA.LET MR CHIRWA ALONE.GENUINE ZRL WORKERS WILL TELL WHAT I HAVE STATED HERE.

    • Even ME MCS knew, only a person of Clive Chirwa’s calibre can turn around ZRL. This un-educated fellow, CHIPEWO belongs to the Archives. HE IS AN OLD RUG OUT!!

    • No man you are wrong, this is fast and powerful and I can now easily post a comment to my facebook wall by just sharing if I find it funny , something lacking on most Zambian websites. Looks like I can now even post a picture or load a YouTube video. Thanks LT for leading the way. You are the best.

  8. Talk about a still birth, this is it. This appointment is a failure before it even begins to fully function By now we should have been talking about potential spin-offs the re-branded ZR will bring to Zambia, and (phase 2) future new rail routes. But alas… it already walks a like a duck, quacks like duck, therefore it is a duck.

  9. One crucial skill a lot of our so-called experts lack is a sense of emotional intelligence. They are too slow in taking in the culture and politics of workplaces. Further, they are unable to exercise empathy in timely fashion. If Clive survives this he may need a quick touch up on this important skill. That aside, however, we must also tackle this senseless cartel and syndicate behavior in our country. Boards of Directors and most powerful entities that should be protecting the weak are leading an onslaught in ensuring they take away whatever little has been put out there to help develop the country. This is creating a time bomb; it is not helping anyone at all – it is endangering an entire nation.

  10. The guy can’t go to his family in Uk coz even the half pay is far more than he nets in the UK. His company is insolvent it’s in the negatives as we talk now. We don’t want u here sir.

  11. these quafs who leacked information..are immature within by trynig to justify thee thout sellest thyselves. what you should know is that if chirwa goes down you shalt be but with him in the dungeons..as for chirwa `when words are many sin is not absent.` speak but a few words.. God help you sir

    • DO NOT UNDERATE Chirwa – only at your own peril – he only moved at the behest of the appointing authority – with whom he has had intimate talks – Kabwe move , most likely out of respect than anything – coz if he had been mistreated by MCS, bet you he would been out of Lsk(Ironically, which he is!) & & left his lawyers to do the talking!!!

  12. Zambia will never develop as long as we only respect and highly reward professionals who do not produce anything like the BOZ governor. How come no one raises their voice about the BOZ governor’s salary.BOZ is equally a parastatal. BOZ does not generate any wealth for the country. They just monitor what ever!

    • Zambians are better being off led by a white man like ill qualified PE school teacher Renard on $100K salary + benefits paid via ministry of sports. If Renard resigned and returned to Europe no club would pay him as he is just not worth it.

    • jay jay- Try not to be emotional when talking about national matters. I know you are a soccer fan but I do not know why you hate kalu even after he’s done so much! Peace!

    • Jay-Jay is SO right!!! We love tu choncholi, tu mwenye no tu sungu SHIT.TING on us, then hop along to quaff as much katubi, munkoyo, Chibuku & mosi that will make us vomit & then lie in the same, wake up the next day & laugh away saying we are having the time of our lives!!!!

  13. I have now come to appreciate Zambians. I thought they are dull and sleepy and that is why i was going to step on their heads. Please zambians dont throw me out. I have moved in my house even though it is not finished. I beg you to give me some privacy napapata please i need this Job. I lied about the salary in uk, i cheated about the house in uk. please forgive me.

  14. I would be happier if the gov’t told us who else was being accommodated at that lodge…why hasn’t the independent media and the opposition picked up on this. Let’s them also give us the annual salaries of CEOs heading some of these public companies. Companies like ZESCO are pushing for a 26% hike in domestic tariffs and people are sleeping and distracted by Chriwa wage.

  15. Dude has no business being a CEO. He is a teacher. Sata must have smoked something to appoint an inexperienced man to take ZRL from the bottom of the tracks!

    • “Nubian Pricess” (verbatim!) Inexperienced in what??? STEALING & CHEATING??? You better give him kudos then – The guy gives you his terms UPFRONT – Illiterates then chant abuse of authority & corruption!! Particularly, WHOM HAS HE CORRUPTED?? considering that his Financial officer was sent on gardening leave for being “Tight-fisted!” You also have to be naive to believe Chirwa left the cold climes prior to fronting his terms – SO MCS has all along known ABOUT THE PAY AS WELL AS ABOUT THE 25% Shares First refusal should ZR be a viable & profitable business 5 yrs down the line!!!! (NB: for the illiterates out there – Chirwa hasn’t demanded 25% Shares UPFRONT!!!!!!!!!!!! mwanvela????) That is the measure of his confidence of his ability to turn the company around – Lots of “Top of the Hill -shouting critics” would rather have Railway systems type of outfit screwing us & they wouldn’t bat an eyelid!!!

  16. The man who is acting CEO was part of the dissolved board now under investigation by ACC. Does it mean that he has been cleared and implicitly the former board too? If so, then Chirwa’s cake is cut. Explains why he has been thrown into a ghetto from luxury even before the investigation has begun.

    • So ONLY Chirwa is UNPATRIOTIC??? the rest of the other occupants at Fallsway are PATRIOTIC I take it?????? – Typical “BURYING ONE’S HEAD IN THE SAND (Actually sand is cleaner) rather in the MUD!!!”

  17. Pro Chirwa has only himself to blame for what he is going through. His ego and allowing himself to be duped by politicians to accept a political appointment has now badly dented his integrity both at home and abroad. Being evicted from a posh villa to a dilapidated structure situated along a nameless dusty street is more than too much to bear for a professor.

    • London Eye YOU ARE WRONG – Read “The Audacity of Hope!!!” Some times you have to be audacious & believe in what you are doing! TRYING TO BE SAFE ALL THE TIME, lacks ambition & people DRIVEN BY AMBITION will always find a way out & succeed in the finality!!

Good e.g. Rt Gen Collin Powell would have been the first AfroAmerican presido had he not played it safe with his wife’s worries, then came the author of “Audacity of Hope”, who is now in his second term of office! Beyond anyone’s dreams!! Prof Chirwa, hang in there – this is a small blip – There are millions of Zambians behind you!!!!!!!

  18. I would have loved the LT to go authentic and let people write their minds as true persons. I appreciate the fears with it especially legal considerations, but how do we know credible people by what they write? I would rather bloggers maintained authenticity. Now you have decided to reduce everyone to muppet personalities, how do we seriously take blogs? We know all politicians by name and we know what they do. Why can’t we also be known by these characters? What you have done is a best way to encourage some party cadre insults that ever go on! LT should have made a yardstick in making bloggers own up, be responsible and accountable for what they write.

  19. The professor is too honest for your liking Zambians are used to being cheated. You morons didn’t even know that your ministers were staying in fricken Fallsway apartments.

  20. Prof Chirwa, you tried being President of Party MMD and implicitly that of Zambia. The Republican President does does not earn what you have been afforded to spend in your short stay there. Why not come to terms and scale down your personal demands in short term and focus on long term. In the long term you will earn alot of money from that company, just as an employee. I have done Productivity my self and in that field we talk about the ratio of inputs to outputs. So far you haven’t done any explicity output to show to an ordinary Zambian. What justification do you have to have spent so much on rentals and your pay so far compared to what you are seeing regards the blind, crippled and other incapacited people in the streets of Lusaka let alone the poor people in rural areas. You have been very selfish, trully so. Go there and make a difference. Let your knowledge show in practice, but do not join looters of the Eurobond funds. Its a loan which must be paid with interest. Make ZR profitable and pay yourself from the profits you make, not stealing from borrowed money. That Eurobond is seed money and if you eat up seeds ZR will not harvest a good crop next season. You are being funny with large salary, your personal company getting contracts, and other emoluments. People surrounding you are poor. Help them by not getting too much for your personal and immediate family benefit. Target improving that rail line so that it can be like the ones you have left in UK which are on time, efficient and effective as well as making profits. You can do that. If not the Chinese are better than you. They built TAZARA and they can do better things. If you feel inadequate, quite but do not steal anything because you will end up in jail. Work for your motherland honestly.

  21. Proff Chirwa is a gem in our hands. Lets use him to advnce our nation. The bazungus have benefited from his intelligence but here we are in poverty abusing this gem throwing it in the mud and calling it it fake and all such nonsense. If Proff Chirwa was fake like some of you morons are suggesting he would not have survived and thrived one day in the UK. Poor African country where even idoits are can pock at brilliancy with impunity. God almighty help us.

  22. My big brother ba Clive im from Muf where we have the history of your brilliancy from when you were very young in school. If people dont want to take advantage of your fantastic knowledge and wide experience just clear yourself and go back. What do you have to lose? I know how you are feeling rght now. You want to serve your country, to contribute like you have done in foreign lands for the benefit of strangers. You want us your relatives to live better lives. You have seen it all and you want to transfer some of it back home but question is, is our lot ready for people like you. I know beloved and hard working President meant well and still wants your contribution to improve our lot. But that is just the President alone. We are a people bamudala where prosperity resulting from brilliancy and hard work is taken as a direct benefit of satanism. People like you are comimg back before your time and you will hurt beyond recovery. I beg you my big brother go back before its too late. Leave Africa to us. We are used to destroying all good things and people. We are sadists. Masochists. Thats our nature and we love it this way. Retrogression forms the very basis of our miserable existence. Strangely though thats what we love and wish for. It requires more than one proffessor to redeem us. I see another 100 years of poffessors like you before we can move a few steps towards some real civillisation.

  23. I would say this for the record, Prof. Chirwa has not commited any corrupt act worth investigating. The same can not be said about the board members that wanted to swindle the zambian public by claiming huge amounts of sitting allowances for doing literally nothing. These are the culprits because, instead of doing due diligency on negotiating the contract, they chose to let down the zambian people in the hope of having some kick back from the CEO and thank God, it was not the same Zambian CEO mentality Chirwa has otherwise, the $120 million you crying about could have long disappeared. Give the Prof. Credit for exposing not only this board, but other boards too. Didn’t the ZESCO board chairman resign just yesyerday? These are already benefits of having a principled CEO not compromised by the politics of the belly. It is disheartening when people just go on demonising a person when they do not even have facts. While Chirwa made a wrong move to try and out source his company to do the training, there was no gratification to warrant an investigation into it. Corruption is only corruption when an act has been committed and in this case, there is only an intent and no act. As pertains to his compensation demands, he is entiled to even ask for a moon, but the the onus falls on the ones who require his services. Surely, if his demands were outrages, couldn’t they have dismissed him with the wand of the arm. It is fools cry to start talking about how unpatriotic he is for making such demands. All those attacking him are just nothing but full of sour grapes and gripped with the PHD syndrome righly sang by MC Wabwino. If Zambia, has to develop, we must learn to respect and value our own intellectuals.

    • The so called experienced in corporate world wanted to queietly continue looting our money in form of allownces as they have always done but chirwa spilled the beens. Now they want to shred him to pieces using polical statements to incite people against him. Unfortunately they may win unless MCS can out smart them.

  24. Sir, mr Chirwa, leave if you can, us in Diaspora are some how enermies to people back home, how? i dont know, i never get them, they dont like us they think we go there to shine or flatter ourselves, they will end up killing you, am so afraid for you, i know what am talking about, they sure taught me a lesson, ala they are bad news kuli jealous please leave those people sir, for your sake!

  25. Being a professor does not Guarantee that he can be a good
leader in corporate world. It is a serious risk as he is very theoretical than
practical hence these issues. He might not do a Good Job as he lacks true corporate
world experience. See how he handled the whole case; it was fighting via the
Media. Let him just be an adviser than a CEO.
