Acting Zambia Railways Muyenga Atanga has assured that the USD 120 million given out to the railway firm as part of the Eurobond is still intact.

“No part of that money has moved. The entire amount is sitting in a ZANACO account,” Dr. Atanga told Journalists in Lusaka Monday morning.

He continued, “This information could be supported by the law enforcement agencies who are watching over the activities at Zambia Railways. We have officers from DEC and the ACC investigating the company and they have confirmed that the US$ 120 million is still intact.”

“We have been very transparent about the manner we plan to run Zambia Railways. Everything is done above board.”
Dr. Atanga who is also Transport Permanent Secretary said the planned rehabilitations of the railway infrastructure are set to commence next month.

He also denied reports that he is on a double salary as Zambia Railways CEO and Permanent Secretary.

Dr Atanga said he is only been paid as Permanent Secretary.

“There has not been any use for that money yet. We are using our own generated funds to support the business. We are paying our own salaries without touching that money. We have told ourselves that we will not ask government for our salaries,” Dr. Atanga said.

He said the tendering for rehabilitation works is nearing completion and contractors are expected to be awarded contracts and be on site by next month.

“We are on course. We have increased the number of cargo we are moved, just in May alone, Zambia Railways moved 69,000 metric tons of cargo via Dar es Salaam which generated US$ 3.3 million for the company,” Dr. Atanga said.

He also revealed that the decision to move Zambia Railways Limited Corporate Head office from Kabwe to Lusaka is final.

“It’s government policy that the HQ should be in Lusaka. The issue is now water under the bridge. We are using the blocks here at Railway Station as the new Corporate office for Directors. We did some renovations to the two office blocks and we are happy here.”

    • Jealous board members accused Prof Chirwa of wanting to shift ZR HQ from Kabwe to Lusaka. So Chirwa was implementing govt policy! Shame on you time wasters. RSZ already moved the HQ to Lusaka.

  1. Iwe Atanga! why is the money stil intact? that money is supposed to used for development, not to be kept like eggs with the hope the chicks will hatch…. Atanga! you could even have given the president that money when he went japan,,, he would have a bought a second hand fokushima electric train for ZRL… by now it woul have been running,,, or maybe parked somewhere in zambia

    • Imagine ati it is still intact kwati alewamya, what these fools dont realise s that that money was borrowed and it attracts interest. and given that clive placed it in an account that yields a lower interest rate than that at which it was borrowed at, the money is actually losing value. That cash meant to develop the railway services and therefore boost productivity by reducing production costs. That way, impiya kufyala impiya shibiye! keeping it reminds me of the story in the bible lol of the useless servant

  2. Toothless and time wasting ACC should be done with their investigations by now! These guys are annoying and pathetic. Chirwa has a job to take ZR to another level and all these tonnes Atanga is talking about are a product of Chirwa’s leadership at ZR

  3. In the meantime Prof. Chriwa is still drawing his salary and has not been cleared…what taking ACC so long to investigate..what a sheer waste of time and new has it that the HQ has been moved to Lusaka the very thing Chriwa proposed. What can Muyenga Atanga bring to the table when he was a mere puppet of the selfsame flawed system.

    • *what’s taking ACC so long to conclude investigations…what a sheer waste of time and news also has it that the HQ has been moved to Lusaka the very thing Chriwa proposed.

  4. Form the way things have been going at Zambia railways VIS a via government, it is clear that government says one thing and does the opposite. The issue of suspending Chirwa and backpeddling on the Headquaters thing is fishy. I smell a rat. This government cannot be trusted in what they say. We are back to the Kaunda era or shall I say error of running the economy. May God help us.

  5. The things Dr Atanga has said seem to be is support of the plans PROF Chirwa had already put in place, rather Clive has been vindicated. Let the guy come back and start working. There is no need of wasting time on things that are straight foward. There is no money lost at ZRL instead profits have started coming in meaning Dr Atanga found good plans and a team of motivated work force – motivated by clive.
    Clive you’re a winner, move on………

    • This is what they do in Zambia use you then chuck you out, never put your ideas in your CV,they will copy and paste them and not give you the job!lol
