CHINA will next year offer up to 10 scholarships to Zambian undergraduate students specifically venturing into the field of science and technology.

Chinese Ambassador to Zambia Dr Zhou Yuxiao said yesterday that the field of science and technology was one key factor to national development and that it was time Zambia started growing in this area.

He said Zambia was one country not short of accountants and lawyers but did not have many people engaging in the field of science, technology and research and China wanted to help in this area.

He said science and technology was the base for real economic growth and Zambia needed to invest in this area to get more benefits from the economic potential it has.

“People are talking about China’s phenomenal economic growth over the last 30 years but one thing they are not talking about is the how much the country invested in science and technology before the economic boom.

“China started sending its people to study science and technology. I was one of the first people that were sent out to learn in this field. Today people are now sending their children out to study and my daughter is an example of this,” he said.

He was saying this when his Embassy donated K25, 000 to a committee fundraising money for the rehabilitation of the University of Zambia (Unza) library.

He said while lawyers and accountants were aplenty, he wanted to see more young Zambians go into mining technology, smelter, electricity and how to generate more electricity in hydro-power and such.

Dr Zhou said most of China’s bilateral relationship with Zambia was based on education adding there were hundreds of Zambian today studying in China in various fields.

He said China offers up to 40 scholarships every year to Zambians to study in China with the number now in the range of 400 in Chinese universities for both under and post graduate students.

He said education was one important factor to economic growth and was one of the biggest household expenditure which even surpassed housing but the benefits it brought to the country were immeasurable.

It is because of this factor, Dr Zhou said, that China wants Zambia to grow in the field of science and technology as it was the only sure way to sustained economic growth as is being seen in the world’s most populous country.

Dr Zhou the 10 scholarships to be offered was small as compared to the levels that Zambia needed but hoped it would go some way in ensuring that the interest in technology and research was enhanced.

“In China, we have a saying that goes like ‘don’t stop delivering small things just because the problem is big’ and this is exactly what the people of China are doing here. This is a show of solidarity so Zambia improves its education and the field of science and technology,” he said.

He urged the Zambian government as well as the private sector to continue using education to fight poverty and shortages adding the 1.3 billion Chinese people will be Zambia in this quest.

  1. this is good news indeed but will the scholarships go to people who deserve them or end up with sons, daughters, nephews, uncles, in laws etc of PF?

    • Do you even have to ask the question? Names have already been submitted to Bursaries Committee even before the scholarships are formalized.

    • What has PF got to do with this? You people always have negative to find in any news you hear; why cant you show some positive thinking without any segregation based on politics? : i can assure you that the BC realy does its work based on results: speaking from experince: am studing in morocco on scolarship from BC; and i have no any link not even did i kow any one from BC just like almost all my friends; so if they choose based on that, most hav us whould have never had the chance;

  2. I am a Zambian student studying in China and I couldn’t agree more with what the ambassador has said. The Chinese government is pouring millions of dollars in research and development. Though one disadvantage for the undergraduate level scholarships here in China is that they have to be taken in Chinese and it’s mammoth task . English programmes are for self-funded students. Whatever the case 10 is better than nothing. The other problem is our government. They do not usually hold their end of the bargain. Students go for months without being paid and as somebody else mentioned too the corruption at B.C. There are so many government official’s children studying here sponsored by the bursaries.

  3. society is never fair. Remember Mr. Owel’s farm and the two leg bad four leg better. what happened to four legged pigs? the started oppressing their fellow animals. The same animals they purported to fight for. All those that work hard like boxer just contributed to the well being of they oppressers. You may ask, whats the motivation for politicians to fight their way to plot? its for such things as attaining easy scholarships for their kinsmate and make dynasty like the chibesakundas

  4. IWE PAUL ULEIKALAFYE. IF YOU WERE PRIVILLEGED TO GET THAT SCHOLARSHIP, WHICH I DOUBT BECAUSE YOUR MOTHER IS A CADRE, LET THE CADRES’ CHILDREN CONTINUE GETTING THESE SPONSORSHIPS. WAKO NI WAKO PERIOD. I.D.I.O.T. YAKUNA AND KABAMBA ARE VERY RIGHT THOUGH THEY ARE NOT IN CHINA.

    • @ Musonda::: My mother died when i was so young; wen i was 5 years old; my father leaves in a village who does not even believe in politics not even taking about politicians: so no way my mother would be cader even if she was to be alive today; M.H.S.R.I P. so you see. just work hard and your opportunity will definetly come than wasting your time blaming PF and politicians, of couse there is corruption at BC but not the way we put it, as even thats all the know the best and remember never to insult again as this was my opinion and not yours.

  5. @Kabamba Kalende, thats how it is all over the world. They give you free education and what do they earn in return from you? nothing? nah my friend. The least they get in return is expose their culture via their language you learn. I was in Russia and it was the same, if you want to learn in English you have to pay for your education otherwise it’s in their language. Atleast Russian language can be easily learnt even if it’s a difficult language but Chinese language eish!!!

  6. Corruption yeve iliko,It appears Zambia is a rich peolpe’s country coz those who are poor or don’t have relatives in high places fail to get even into local universities. What’s more, all of my friends studying abroad actually agreed to having some affiliation with th BC staff when I asked them..this is information u will never read in a news paper or see on t.v.some people having 6points apply but are left, while those with ma 15 and up are the fisrt on these lists..what a shame

  7. 8. Thanks for the ten scholarships which might not benefit the needy of the day.

  10. Let us just do what we can to earn what we individually can. Many of us want to apply for these scholarships & the last thing we need is negativity around us. Just give the procedure if u know it & let those who want to apply be. If we are given such praise God if we are not praise for those who will be given.
