Police confront FDD president Edith Nawakwi for allegedly holding an illegal meeting

Open Society Foundation (OSF) Executive Director Sunday Chanda has accused the Zambia Police of being selective in the application of the Public Order Act.

Mr. Chanda said the move by Police to block MMD President Nevers Mumba from meet his members in Eastern Province while allowing PF Secretary General Wynter Kabimba to go around the country to conduct similar meetings amounts to double standards in applying the law.

Mr. Chanda says such double standards continue to prove that the police is partial in the manner it applies the public order Act.

He says the Police should apply the same rules to all political parties including the ruling party.

Mr. Chanda has since appealed to Home Affairs Minister Ngosa Simbyakula to rise to the occasion and guide them men and women in uniform on the application of the Public order Act.

Meanwhile the opposition Forum for Democracy and Development (FDD) has called on Members of Parliament to consider amending the Public Order Act as Parliament resumes sitting next month.

FDD Spokesperson, Antonio Mwanza, told QFM News that there is urgent need to review the public order Act and its implementation in order to promote freedom of assembly in the country.

Mr. Mwanza said it is clear that in its current form, the public order Act is not advancing liberties, but is curtailing inalienable rights, which include freedom of speech, expression and freedom of assembly.

Mr. Mwanza said that despite some amendments having been made to the public order Act to try and bring it in tune with a multiparty political dispensation, its enforcement has not changed much from what it was under the one-party state.

He has since implored parliamentarians more especially those from the opposition, to continue pressing government for the release of the final draft constitution.

  1. In 2016, the first thing we shall do, as the new government is fire Stella Libongani, cage Wynter Kabimba, arrest Mmembe, fire and arrest mutembo Nchito – for causing unnecessary pain to HE MC Sata – sack Justice Chibesakunda and install the new constitution to create a modern environment for all political players and a media that operates freely (this does not include the mischievous Watchdog)! Let’s go HH…let’s go UPND.

    • ZAMBIAN POLICE OFFICERS ARE DOGS, AND NOT JUST DOGS AS SOME DOGS ARE VERY GOOD BUT LUNATIC DOGS WHO CANNNOT DIFFERENTIAL BETWEEN WHAT IS GOOD AND BAD, WHAT IS WRONG AND RIGHT, WHAT IS HONOURABLE AND UNDECENT. THEY FOLLOW THE COMMAND EVEN WHEN IT TAKES THEM TO DESTRUCTION.
SIMPLY PUT; THEY ARE I.D.I.O.T.S. IMMORAL DOGS IMMIGRATING ON TRUTHLESS SERVICE.
SOME ONE MUST CLEAN UP THE SERVICE OF SUCH WORTHLESS MEN AND WOMEN OR CRIMINALS HIDDING AS POLICE (CADRES) IN POLICE UNIFORMS.

    • We should be talking about how a stable currency like the kwacha has devalued so much in as little as little as 2years 8months and still counting.

For those that are still confused with the rebased currency I will break it down like this:

Today: £1.00 = K11,750,000.00 ( in millions of kwacha old currency)
Today: £1.00 = Kr11,750.00 (in thousands of kwacha new currency) not even sure about the symbol used.

      Two (2yrs 8mnths) eight months ago: £1.00 = K8200.00 Sometimes even in K7000s
In real terms it means: 11750-8200=3550
The kwacha has dropped by 3500 odd kwacha almost half the strength it used to be in just 2yrs8months. Mathematicians, work out the percentage point fall from grace since the last government. Any competent government would fire the minister of finance and…

  2. Spot on Sunday. Nowadays you are level headed, impartial and speak a lot of sense. Unfortunately I don’t see Simbyakula and Libongani doing anything sensible on your appeal because these are some of the educated Zambians that have made education worthless. Much as they are that educated, even to the level of Dr in the case of Simbyakula, the education hasn’t made them any wiser or better than a Zambian with little education but can apply natural wisdom. They are a reliability to our democracy and the peace of our country. This is the reason some of us have no regard for such people and when they leave these offices we see them as stinking garbage in our midst.

  3. saying that the ZP is selctive in applying Public Order Act is a wrong statement. for ZP Public Order Act = Opposition political party gathering, even if there are in their offices.

  4. I wonder what this bickering is about. The Po-Lice, are just that… Lice.
Do you ever remember a friend, when asked what they wanted to be when they grow up, and they said Police? Nope. It is one of those professions were you just find yourself because there is nothing else you could do. like prostitution. Indeed in prostitution you side with the biggest buyer. I do not have to spell it out…

  5. We dont know where to go these days if you have a crime at your doorstep and you are not PF because the Police will say ni ba MMD abo bawna. There is lunatiC FOR A COUNCILLOR WHO IS BUILDING ON THE ROAD IN NORTHMEAD .The Mayor and Mr Chenda seem to endose this lawless shanty compound mode of development.
When people complainn to the civic leaders then he says those complaining are MMD surely does PF mean lawless and disorder.Anyway PF is not in the offiice for ever and we shall demolish those illegal structures and arrest the culprits with the Police for all Zambians and not for one party .

  6. Guys, here the thing to do is ask for the new constitution as the police swear an allegiance to the President, so for as long as the old constition is in place, the cops have to support the President;
