The Grand Coalition on the people driven constitution has expressed shock at the proposal by Young African Leaders Initiative YALI to have the 2016 elections under the same constitution.

Speaking in an interview Coalition Vice Chairperson Beatrice Grilo said the group was taken aback by Mr. Ntewewe’s YALI proposal which does not reflect the consortium’s aspirations.

Ms. Grilo noted that the behavior by YALI was surprising to the consortium but that such actions from such a diverse group was to be expected from some members.

Ms. Grilo said the consortium will however sturdy the document before issuing a comprehensive statement on the matter.

“Like you and us we were taken by surprised by the proposal by YALI because we just saw in the media.

We will issue a comprehensive statement once will study the proposal as you know YALI is one of our members so we want to find out what he is up to.”

Asked if there are some members within the consortium in support of the proposal Ms. Grilo said no group had come out so far and that the coalition was hopeful that non will support the proposal.

Meanwhile NAREP Youth Secretary General Bwalya Nondo challenged Mr. Ntewewe to clearly explain the proposal to the youths in the country as his proposal does not reflect the wishes of the majority of youths.

Mr. Ndondo said many youths in the country are wallowing in abject poverty because of the defective constitution that the nation is currently using which does not guarantee certain rights hence postponing the enactment of the new constitution to 2016 is not in the best interest of the youths in the country.

He further challenged YALI to tell the youths in the country what has changed for it to have a change of heart when a few months ago it was part of the people agitating for the new constitution.

  1. Thats Zambian politics! ‘Identify the most vocal Unit and oil it and we will not have problems any more’. I suspect YALI has been given SOMETHING!

  2. They may be Young African Leaders Initiative members, but sure as hell, they way of thinking is the same as Old Geriatric African Corrupt Rulers Club.

  3. One can not president if he/she not popular in Eastern, Luapula, Northern, Muchinga, Copperbelt, Central and Lusaka provinces. Democracy is about numbers. Unfortunately Southern Province has taught people how to vote.

    • @ Musonda: Let us just say Zambian politics are tribal especially Rural Areas. Luapula and Northern will always vote Bemba speaking while Southern will also always voteTonga. The East will vote Easterner – just check out how Easterners voted for RB: How Northern and Luapula voted for MCS and how Southern voted for HH! PURELY on Tribal lines….

    • Mike you talking that is where the problem is. Things have changed for bad. Remember how late Mazoka was voted country wide.

    • THE DIFFERENCE IS THAT SOUTHERNERS VOTE FOR SOMEBODY WHILE THE REST VOTE AGAINST SOMEBODY IN ORDER TO REMOVE THEM FROM POWER AS SEEN IN RBs CASE IN THE NAME OF WANTING CHANGE.

  4. You always vote for people you want to vote for. Therefore, leave people to vote for the people they want to vote for.

  5. Why is Miss Piggy is always against what other people thinks? It is a sign of bad leadership, YALI has every right to think outside the box and come up with an independent decision and not be influenced by outsiders who have hidden agendas. These so called Grand coalition are just individuals who are being paid by foreign groups to influence the constitution so that those clauses banning homosexuality can be removed.
A new constitution will not end poverty, only hard work and education can reduce poverty, this sell pitch just shows how shallow the members of the so called ‘Coalition’ analyse important issues. So many NGO’s in the country, not even one which is purely dedicated to education and provision of educational materials to the poor, everyone is about politics!

  6. the trouble with our youth is that they are spineless; these young people sound like they have been paid bt the ruling party, who waits for two more years for what is ready to be used now; tuff guys we know that you are the youth wing of PF; we want the constitution now;

  7. This guy is just hungry and wants a morsel from the PF government. He must be ashamed of himself if his moral campus is working.
