Health Minister, Joseph Kasonde, has urged members of staff at Livingstone General Hospital to be mindful of their attitudes towards clients and advised them to be respectful and courteous as they manage the health institution on behalf of the community.

Dr Kasonde stated that the Livingstone General Hospital belonged to the community and as the owners they deserved to receive maximum benefit from the health institution.

He further said health care providers were obliged to share information with the public to avoid unnecessary confrontations.
“My ministry recognises that poor information flow leads to wrong perceptions and misconceptions among the people,” he said.

Dr Kasonde said this in a speech read for him by Tourism Deputy Minister, Lawrence Evans, during the Livingstone General Hospital’s Open Day program at which two advanced life-saving ambulances were handed over to the health institution.

Meanwhile, the health minister acknowledged security concerns raised by the Provincial Medical Officer at the Livingstone General Hospital.

“Indeed, the investment to make Livingstone General Hospital what it is now will come to nothing without proper security measures. Therefore, I am making an earnest appeal to all stakeholders to help in the construction of the security wall by making monetary or material donations,” he said.

Dr Kasonde said since the Patriotic Front government came into power, the Livingstone General Hospital had received equipment such as a Computerised Tomography (CT) Scan, 4D U/S Mammogram, cervical cancer screening equipment, communication, laundry and kitchen equipment among others.

“Further, government provided funds for the rehabilitation of the Mental Annex, construction of staff transit accommodation (16 flats) and a laboratory. Funds are also available for the construction of a library, classrooms and a skills laboratory at the School of Nursing and Midwifery,” he said.

Earlier, Acting Provincial Medical Officer, High Monze, said despite being a beneficiary of unprecedented development, security at the Livingstone General Hospital was compromised due to an incomplete wall.

Dr Monze, however, commended government and the community for their unwavering support as it enabled the institution to enhance service delivery.

Tourism and Arts Deputy Minister, Lawrence Evans, who is also Livingstone Central Member of Parliament, pledged 100 pockets of cement towards the completion of the wall, while Dr Monze and Acting Medical Superintendent at the hospital, Zaza Nthele pledged 10 pockets each.

Indo Zambia Bank Livingstone Branch has pledged K500 towards the K180, 000 needed to complete the wall at the health institution.

  1. Is this the same lazy minister who has banned people from west Africa from entering zambia due to Ebola outbreak. What a lazy approach to the issue. You are the first country to take such a measure in the world. All other countries have invested in screening aides. It shows that the business between zambia & other countries is very neglible. Ebola maybe deadly but is not very contagious but infectious. I hope the minister understands the difference between the two words, if not I would ask Caniciuos Banda to explain to the Ministry of Health

  2. You have been all along saying we are ready to handle the disease, even threatening people with genuine concerns on our preparedness with dismisal. I know prevention is always better and cost effective but I think you were lying that we are ready. From what I have read as a medical practioner, Ebola is a very easy disease to manage just as President Obama echoed the other day. West Africa has got its conditions fueling it like people eating bats, monkeys & so on. But nangu mwenso, you can’t ban people from west Africa from coming in. This is not airborne like SARS. Anyway what do you expect from people who even fail to give a simple stadium a name

    • Iwe SARS is South African Revenue Services not an airborn virus!Ebola is not an easy disease to manage. It has no cure yet and dont think you can treat it like ichifine. Its deadly and 90% of its victims die.It is worse than HIV!! Its is safer to prevent people who are infected to come to Zambia. You should listen and watch the news on BBC,CNN,Aljazeera and other channels before you exhibit your ignarance in public!!

    • @ 2.1 kwena wansekesha. Ati SARS is South African Revenue Services! Oh my God it’s too early in the morning to be laughing like this! Thanks for the laugh all the same. Happy Sunday to you and fellow bloggers.

  3. prevention is better than cure , why expose your people to diseases better you keep your people far from such dangers

  4. In Malawi, Member of Parliament for Lilongwe city council David Bisnowaty has donated sets of screening devices(Digital laser beam thermometers) to Kamuzu International Airport to strengthen the level of preparedness for any suspected Ebola case (www.nyasatimes.com). Here in Zambia the Members of Parliament are looking for a pay rise

  5. It reminds me of those days when HIV people were not allowed to enter some countries. For us whether you have Ebola or not as long as you are from West Africa, don’t come to Zambia. At a wimp, iye aka kachalo, the only country world wide to undertake such a sever measure. Anyway I am sure govt knows we don’t have the capacity to contain despite the earlier lies

  6. Jairo steels what does it mean to you when BA and Kenya airways cancelled their flights to west Africa or western embassies have suspended the issuarance of visas to west Africans?

  7. Well INDO Zambia bank pledged a whopping k500, big deal that’s 5 months of service fees on one business account. The bank should have sponsored the whole amount.
as for SARS that’s a airborne virus started in Asia and spread by pigs. Google it
