Chieftness Chiawa (r) Senior Chieftness Komesha Mukamambo ii (l) and Vice President Dr. Guy Scott cutting the ribbon during the Official Opening of Michael Chilufya Sata Bridge in Chiawa crossing the Kafue river.

The newly constructed Chiawa Bridge has been named after President Michael Sata as a gift for his 77th birthday.

Chieftainess Chiawa proposed to Vice President Guy Scott, who officiated at the launch today that the new bridge constructed at a cost of K53 million be named after President Sata. The Bridge was constructed by China Henan Corporation.

“Chieftainess Chiawa proposed to me that the new Chiawa Bridge be named after President Michael Sata and so that is the new name for this bridge,” Dr Scott said.

He warned foreign operators in the tourism sector in the Lower Zambezi Valley to ensure that Zambians participated as partners in the businesses and directed them to comply.

“I am warning them to correct the situation within two weeks or they will be thrown out for being insensitive. This cannot be happening after 50 years of being independent,” he said.

Dr Scott said the new bridge would open up development potential in the Zambezi Valley.

“The process of development is to help the poor as opposed to feeding the eyes. Development is for a purpose and that purpose is to improve lives of poor people,” he said.

Transport, Works, Supply and Communications Minister Yamfwa Mukanga said the bridge covered a length of 140 meters and was 10.4 meters wide.

He expressed sorrow over the loss of a life during the construction of the bridge involving an engineer, Gerald Ngulube.

Chinese Ambassador to Zambia, Youming Yang said Zambia had great achievements in maintaining political stability and economic growth.

[pullquote]”President Sata is a man of action and we have witnessed several developmental projects and it is a befitting honour and gift on his 77th birthday to name the bridge after him,” Chieftainess Chiawa said.[/pullquote]

He said the existing relations between Zambia and China had potential to grow in order to benefit both countries.

World Bank country representative Kundhavi Kadiresan said the bridge would have significant bearing on the local community as it would serve as a fast access to reach various facilities.

Dr Kadiresan said the Bank’s current support to the country amounted to US$570 million covering sectors that were critical to development such as health, transport and agriculture.

Kafue Member of Parliament, Obvious Mwaliteta said the bridge would also help reduce maternal mortality as it would allow smooth referral of patients.

Senior Chieftainess Nkhomeshya said the bridge would enhance business activities in the area.

Chieftainess Chiawa said President Sata was an action oriented man and kind to the rural community adding that completion of various projects was a result of his actions, hence he deserved to be honoured by naming the facility after him.

“President Sata is a man of action and we have witnessed several developmental projects and it is a befitting honour and gift on his 77th birthday to name the bridge after him,” Chieftainess Chiawa said.

  1. This is not a good sign,is everything ok at plot one mwebantu.Dont get me twisted but this starting to name things after the presido may send a wrong signal to the public.Just my thought.

    • Something is surely serious somewhere, how can King Cobra fail to commission this big project that he has being longing to see get completed.

    • Last time he looked seriously ill. Must have got worse for someone who craves to be in the limelight to be so elusive is not normal. Come out of hiding we will sympathise.

    • Ok, its 77 years now, but the man said he was 72 years.
Maybe the Romans have changed the numbering system?
Ahh, the man should be a footballer, those people always reduce their years.

    • This is nothing at least name a Province after him I would say

Rename southern province, as Michael sata province

      Thanks

    • @ Mushota, normally I would refrain from commenting on other people’s comments but are you serious with your comment or it’s just banter? Should everything be named after one person and his ‘head’ put on our currency? This not only carries undertones of dictatorship, but a clear sign of people wanting recognition from a being who has hibernated in statehouse. Sad days…

  2. CONGRATULATIONS TO PF AND THE WORLD BANK FOR THIS GREAT ACHIEVEMENT! Job well done. Credit must be given where credit is due. This will reduce the difficulties of peole in the area.

    • Give credit where it is due? Kupusa, this is our money? Not Sata’s money. This this what the government is there for. To provide service to the Zambians. And where is Sata anyway? Did he delegate this again to Scott? How crazy is this? Scott at commonwealth games, Scott at AU, Scott at SADC, Scott in America? Scott in mangago Scott Scott Scott……and Scott. Where is Sata? Ghost ???? President. That to me seems like an Epitaph bridge.

    • YOU THINK UPND CHAPS CAN GIVE CREDIT WHERE IT IS EVEN PLAIN. THEY ARE SO ENVIOUS ABOUT THE ACHIEVEMENT OF SATA AND PT JUST IN TWO YEARS. THINGS WHICH MMD FAILED TO ACHIEVE IN 20 YEARS. SO, TO ME 20 YEARS OF PF LEADERSHIP MEAN COMPLETE ECONOMIC AND INDUSTRIAL DEVELOPMENT HENCE COMPLETE ERADICATION OF POVERTY IN ZAMBIA. AND THAT’S NO JOKE.

    • what failure of MMD?didnt MMD build the chirundu bridge, katima mulilo bridge, mbesuma bridge among others including the 400km mutanda chavuma road?

    • This bridge has nothing to do with Sata . It’s a World Bank project sourced by the MMD. Construction began in July 2011.

  3. Am just worried about the work load the old man Scott has been forced to take .He rarely has time to spend time at home .PF please come clean so that Scott can delegate some tasks to other people.

    • DON’T WORRY, DR GUY SCOTT IS TRAINING TO BE PRESIDENT AFTER SATA COMPLETES HIS TWO TERM OFFICE. OR IF THEY DECIDE THAT DR GUY SCOTT SHOULD STAND IN 2016. GUY SCOTT IS MOST LIKELY TO WIN. BY NOW EVERY ZAMBIAN IN EVERY CORNER OF ZAMBIA HAS MET KNOWS DR GUY SCOTT. HE’S ONE OF FEW MEANINGFUL PF MEMBERS IF NOT THE ONLY ONE WHO WOULD WIN THE PRESIDENCY IN ZAMBIA AS AT NOW. HE IS A VERY HARD WORKER AND HAS A GENUINE LOVE FOR ZAMBIA AS A ZAMBIAN.

  4. Mhsrip! Sata was a hard working and vulga man.next president should ensure that he never follows his dirty legacy.

    • HH will be remembered as the only zambian presidential candidate to have participated in more than 6 elections without being successful.

    • THE ONLY PLACE MATEBELA (OR IS IT UNDER 5) CAN WIN ELECTIONS IS IN HIS GARDEN AND ONLY AT NIGHT WHEN THE HOUSE BOY, GARDEN BOY, COOK, MAID AND SECURITY GUARDS ARE NOT THERE. WHEN THERE’S ONLY HIS WIFE, CHILDREN AND A NEPHEW. EVEN THEN THE ELECTIONS WOULD BE HEAVILY RIGGED.

  5. Who gets the job done! Micheal Sata! Who build the roads, bridges that helped the poor? Micheal Sata! Whose our man? Micheal Sata!

I can just imagine how dreadful HH will feel driving over this bridge! Only thing…..is that a river or a puddle under the bridge!!

Well done Sir and PF. OOOOH this is progress.

    • Exactly who pays for these overpriced single sourced RDA contracts? The taxpayer who are being ripped off by corrupt politicians.

    • @8. PROGRESS INDEED. MORE OF THESE BRIDGES AND ROADS WILL UNFOLD ECONOMIC AND INDUSTRIAL ACTIVITIES IN RURAL AREAS WHERE IT WEREN’T POSSIBLE EVEN TO DREAM OF SUCH ACTIVITIES.

  6. Well done Scott for raising the issue of foreign tour operators. It is clear from some research I’ve done that most of them present a negative image of Africans. Often in brochures, black indigenous Zambians are portrayed in subservient roles as cooks, load carriers, servants (sometimes complete with white gloves, fez hats).

There has to be more involvement in business roles and an equitable share!

  7. This reminds me of the dictator KK. Naming companies after himself (Kenneth Kaunda Foundation), the football team (KK 11), a school after his father (David Kaunda), a township after his mother (Helen Kaunda), etc. Now the current dictator is following in the footsteps of his mentor. Useless foolish stupid Zambians! Always voting for rubbish leaders.

  8. PF government has commissioned this and that, official opening of this and that, PF governement has officially launched this and that, PF has completed this and that. A result oriented leadership that deserves true praise and to honour HEMCS in this manner is very befitting. Long live the mighty Cobra, man of action. ka (HH) is a diaper soiling under 5 who has put his thick bushy ox tail between his cow legs in shame after Mangango. Zambians saw the idyot for the hateful tribal clansman he is. Abash evil regional tribalism

    • @ Peter, Kudos etc, it is surprising to note that in all your posting, you can not miss an opportunity to campaign for HH. Is it out of envy or shear hatred for a fellow human being? What does this story got to do with HH? If you think completing a bridge is an achievement by a govt, then you do not understand what real development is. It is the responsibility of the govt to complete projects and it’s your right to demand of any govt to do so for you as a tax payer. Visit other countries in your sub region such as Botswana and Namibia then you can see what real development is. Zambia lacks proper leadership and indeed citizens who demand quality services from the people they have put in power. No wonder you can have a president in hiding and you think it is ok. Zambia deserves better.

  9. way to go, way to go! Abash evil regional tribesmen

  10. Imwe ba nkusa. so RB didnt do anything in his reign? This ba PF *****s is not right. Sata has only been Zambian President for about 3 years and already you have started building his Presidential house before u build Chiluba, Mwanawasa and RB their houses. now the serpent has had the bridge named after him. what about other former presidents didnt they do anything? its not fair. Zambia belongs to RB aswell. name something after Ba Rupiah mwebantu. you can say he stole so u cant name anything after RB, but Kaunda committed much more wicked crimes and deep crimes, yet he had an airport named after him, some libraries and schools named after him, I here KK has even some toilets named after him. if u dont know the wickedness of KK ask Simon Mwansa Kapwepwe’s kids, they will tell you.

    • I THINK GIVE PRAISE WHERE IT’S DUE ALSO TO RB. HE BOUGHT PETROL FROM NIGERIA WHICH NEVER CAME TO ZAMBIA AND SAFE GUARDED THE MONEY IN THE WEST ENDIES- SAFE-KEEPING IT FOR HIMSELF AND FAMILY. THAT WAS A GOOD BULK BUYING OF PETROL WHICH INVOLVED NO TRANSPORT COST AS IT NEVER CAME TO ZAMBIA. WE MUST GIVE PRAISE WHERE IT’S DUE. FOR COST-EFFECTIVENESS, ALL PROJECTS THAT TOOK PLACE WHERE COMMENCED FEW MONTHS BEFORE ELECTIONS.

    • Kashimba, that is what has prompted Wantanshi to post that comment. Do not try to be clever or sarcastic when it comes to the English language in certain circumstances, it makes you look dull.

  11. This is truelly an honour befitting His Excellency our dear beloved President Michael Chilufya Sata, God bless this great man and God bless Zambia. Great works for all to see, so much has been done infrastructure wise that even those in opposition namely UPND cadres have benifitted though they continue to be negative and unappreciative but such is expected from these wolves in sheeps clothing as they (UPND) are really children of satan.

    • You are the offspring of satan. All you see is UPND in everything around you even when the story has nothing to do with it.

  12. We shouldn’t name anything after A SERVING president as that indirectly campaigns for him.It also creates abuse thru influence peddling and personality cult which isn’t good for democracy or good governance.

    • What “SERVING” President? We don’t have one!

We have an “absentee” President, or an AWOL President, or a GHOST President!

And the only “serving” that is being done is SELF SERVICE for personal “Medical tourism” !!!!

And the Zambian TAXPAYER has to foot the bill. OUR MONEY WASTED!!!

  13. PF continue working hard like this so that all dreamers can run out of words!only an enemy can fail to appreciate what PF is achieving!true not everyone can be PF or UPND or MMD.but the fact is many real voters are enjoying PF’s works!

  14. Will take a while to get used to the “new name”, I hope that it does not catch on, what is wrong with the beautiful name “Chiawa bridge” anyway? Reminds me of Disaster stadium!

    • IT WILL TAKE A WHILE TO DIASPORANS WHO WILL NEVER USE IT AND MAYBE DON’T SEE THE ECONOMIC IMPORTANCE OF IT. BUT TO THE ZAMBIANS AND OTHERS RESIDENT IN ZAMBIA, THE NAMING OF THE BRIDGE AFTER MICHAEL CHILUFYA SATA COMES NATURAL AS THEY KNOW AND APPRECIATE THE ECONOMICAL AND SOCIAL VALUE OF IT.

    • Do not worry. Such !diocy will be reversed once this stup!d party leaves power mu 2016, the way KK’s face was removed from the banknotes when MMD took over.

  15. If comments on these articles represent the views of many ordinary Zambians then one should not be surprised why the state is in so much shit, people like our little bitch Mushota, Kudos and patriotic Zambian abroad need to have their little heads examined

    • No, Mushota, Kudos and patriotic Zambian abroad need their BANK ACCOUNTS examined. They are only writing this nonsense because they are being PAID TO.

They are not “ordinary Zambians”, they are just parasitic worms feeding on a rotten PF carcass.

    • @22, how is it you were able to write such prophanities without getting blocked? And you spelt everything correctly. Do share.

  16. I couldn’t miss the clever symbolism of naming it after that mambala.Sata is the dirty water passing under the bridge.

  17. The president’s glaring absence here seems to tell a story that the bridge is a symbolism of him about to cross to the other side, never to return. Oops! I hear his illness is a top secret.

  18. Congrats for building the bridge but naming it after Sata while he is still president is bad. Anything with Sata’s name is a curse. Already one person was sacrificed. I hope many more lives will not be sacrificed on this bridge or road. Hope there are clear safety signs on this road and bridge

  19. Whatever happens to Sata, who cares. The man has destroyed Zambia with his tribalism. I even hate thinking of going back to settle in Zambia, because of Sata`s tribalistic leadership.

  20. Whatever! Sata has renamed some places so what stops a future President from doing the same. Better that others sing your praises and honour you than you doing it for yourself. Just imagine President Obama or Prime Minister Cameron naming or allowing something to be named after them whilst in office. The PF Government are really petty.

    • I can smell jealous. Tell you what brada? learn to be patriotic. These projects are way beyond party cardism and regionalism. Zambians are very patriotic people. As long as there is something to show for it, it will be difficult for Hingombe Hilede to change the ball game.

  21. Why is it so difficult for some people to appreciate something good such as this new bridge? Where is the patriotism in some people?

    • Bakalamba it’s hard to explain the hate and bitterness these people have in their hearts. Unfortunately such comments will ensure that their party never gets into power. I am a non Bemba but I can see that we are all being labelled the same just because we don’t come from a certain area.

    • i don’t give credit where its not due. How can someone claim to be given credit on the plans started by someone else.

  22. Our brothers and sisters from southern province really hate President Sata and PF with a passion to an extent that some of us revenge and do the same to their kawalala n his illede party.

    • NOT SOUTHERN PROVINCE ALONE BUT THE WHOLE NONE BEMBA TRIBES MWANA ARE THE ONE WHO HATE SATA, EVEN ME I HATE HIM 4 HIS TRIBLISM,NEPOTISM,REGIONALISM BUT AM NOT A TONGA.MOST TONGAS DON’T BLOG ON THESE SITES BUT GUSSE WAT, THE 4 CONERS OF ZED WITH DIFFERENT TRIBES COMMENTS ON THESE SITES.INVESTIGATE PROPERLY U ARE JUST ACCUSSING INNOCENT TONGAS.

  23. This is very good development. By this time next year, Zambia will be highly developed infrastructure wise such that the opposition will have nothing on which to campaign on. By the way the constitution is a non starter as a campaign tool.

  24. You may name bridges and the lot after Sata but the question still remains, WHERE IS SATA and why has Scott taken over all of Sata’s responsibilities?

  25. Chabwera u are right.People in Southern Province don’t appreciate others. In Siavonga, the bottom road is well done but people are still voting Janza ..UP and DOWN.PF has done alot but cos of the cancer of tribalism, they pretend not to see.How do u expect other provinces to also give u support ?

  26. Tongas are Zambias and can lead this country but they are too tribal.Whether PF developed Southern Prov to the status of Johansburg in South Africa, they would still vote JANZA….now what kind of reasoning is that ? Learn to work with others if u also want them to support u.Southern Prov alone can not make HH president…If he remained in the pact,he was going to be the next President after Sata.As of now forget it.
